What Redditors are Saying

Is "The Sinner" Worth Watching?

TL;DR Yes, "The Sinner" is worth watching, especially the first season. Subsequent seasons have mixed reviews, with many viewers favoring the first over the others.

Season 1: A Strong Start

"The Sinner" has been widely praised for its first season. Viewers appreciate the engaging plot, strong performances, particularly by Bill Pullman, and the satisfying resolution [2][4:3]. The first season is noted for keeping audiences guessing and providing a compelling psychological mystery [5:1]. If you enjoy crime dramas or psychological thrillers, season 1 is highly recommended [3:5].

Subsequent Seasons: Mixed Reviews

Opinions on seasons 2 and 3 are more varied. Some viewers found season 2 to be less compelling than the first [2:4][3:8], while others thought it was decent but not as strong [5:1]. Season 3 received criticism for its lack of progression and character depth [5:1][5:2]. However, there are still viewers who enjoyed these seasons despite their differences from the first [5:4][5:5].

Similar Shows

If you enjoy "The Sinner," you might want to explore other series with similar themes. Recommendations include "Homecoming," "Sharp Objects," "Mindhunter," "The Missing," and "True Detective" [1:1][2:2][2:3]. These shows offer dark, psychological narratives that may appeal to fans of "The Sinner."

Overall Recommendation

While the first season of "The Sinner" is highly recommended, subsequent seasons may not meet the same expectations for all viewers. If you find yourself captivated by season 1, it could be worthwhile to continue watching, but be prepared for potential shifts in tone and storytelling.

ORIGINAL POST

I am on the 8th episode I think, and I absolutely love it. A friend just told me that if I keep watching after the first season, I would deeply regret the wasted time. Would you agree ? and PLEASE no spoilers.

And one more request : Could you please recommend a show or a movie that is somewhat similar to season 1. Preferably on Netflix.

Thanks in advance.

I liked the first and second season much more than the third. I really wanted to like the third season too because I like Matt Bomer, but it was just ok.

"The Sinner" is a great, dark and serious detective series, with the first season available on Netflix. Why hadn't I heard anything about it?

Posted by okami31 · in r/television · 6 years ago

My fiancee and I stumbled upon it, randomly looking for well-rated series available on Netflix. We finished it in two days, and it was overall great. Very well acted, good pace, keeps you guessing, and ends in a satisfying way.

I had never heard anything about it. No mention of it in social media or other people talking about it. Is it because it came out in the USA cable channel fairly recently (2017 for first season) and cord-cutters or heavy streamers wouldn't have heard of it until it popped on Netflix?

Anyway, I heartily recommend it if you enjoy dark and tense dramatic criminal series such as "True Detective", "The Killing", "Mindhunter" or "Sharp Objects".

The night of, the fall, river, tin star s1, save me (incredible! And lenny james!), the sinner s1 (particularly impressed by the tremendous acting), 1983 (love celebral thinking series), happey valley, tabula, seven seconds, safe, the missing s1 & s2, and then there were none, the honourable woman, the shadow line (last two superb) ,broadchurch, true detective s1 and s3

Oh, True Detective season 3 is worth it? I heard it was better than 2 but still not great.

1 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 6 years ago

Depends if you're listening to the right people. It's very good. It makes season 2 even worse and the showrunner went back to his roots as in season 1. I would say where s1 was more mythology, season 3 is more unreliable narrator elements, which is very engrossing. I will also say this, if you liked Shap objects, I cant imagine anyone not liking this EXCEPT that it's more of a thinking show. Theres 3 different timelines. It's very impressive how its written and its tight, though theres only 2 episodes to go, so I'm reluctant to say it belongs in the same sentence because right now, these 2 episodes can break the series as it's been building up to what could be an exceptional finale. It's a series where two characters take ten steps before saying anything. Not everyone like a hot burn. Personally, such shows don't bore me. They captivate me.

In regards to the performances, Jessica Biel gives her all, she cries in almost every episode and yet still feels restrained, really shows her maturity as an actor. Bill Pullman does well with what he's given, although it couldve been played by anyone, and there's an arc with him that goes nowhere and stops mid-season. Christopher Abbott isnt really given anything to do after the first few episodes. The child actors do really well surprisingly. Don't delve too deep into the plot towards the end of the series, a few gaping plot holes show up. Otherwise you'll have a good time.

My sister and I are looking for our next binge, and we narrowed the list down to these two shows. Both has fairly average scores though. I was told that "you" is a poor man's Dexter, yet I really liked Dexter, so I guess I am fine with it. Any other recommendations, preferably for thrillers (movies as well), are more than welcomed. AI Answer

Is The Sinner worth watching

Key Considerations for Watching "The Sinner":

  1. Genre: If you enjoy psychological thrillers and crime dramas, "The Sinner" is a strong contender. It delves into the motivations behind crimes rather than just the crime itself.

  2. Storytelling: Each season features a different case, focusing on the protagonist, Detective Harry Ambrose, as he unravels complex psychological issues. This narrative style keeps the show fresh and engaging.

  3. Character Development: The series is known for its deep character exploration, particularly the lead characters. If you appreciate character-driven stories, this aspect will likely resonate with you.

  4. Critical Acclaim: The show has received positive reviews for its writing, performances (especially Bill Pullman as Detective Ambrose), and its ability to tackle dark themes effectively.

  5. Pacing: Some viewers find the pacing slow at times, particularly in the first season. If you prefer fast-paced narratives, this might be a consideration.

Takeaway: If you appreciate intricate plots, character depth, and psychological exploration, "The Sinner" is definitely worth watching. The first season is particularly praised, and if you enjoy it, the subsequent seasons continue to offer compelling stories.
