I had a feeling Sinners was going to do well, but it’s really captured the zeitgeist in a way I haven’t seen in a while.
I’m not sure why you’re getting downvoted, I think Sinners probably will be the financially bigger film by the end of its run, even including inflation in the final tally of “Get Out”.
I was just trying to time travel myself back to 2017 to try to make this very comparison. Sinners feels bigger right now, but Get Out had real cultural legs (the sunken place, "i would have voted for Obama a third time," etc.) that I haven't gotten a sense yet that Simners will have.
Nevertheless, Sinners is really big.
They’re pretty comparable box-office-wise, although Sinners is doing slightly better iirc. Idk, cultural zeitgeist is harder to remember the farther out you are, so obviously Sinners feels bigger in this moment but Get Out really was a cultural phenomenon. I lived in a small little conservative rural town in Texas at the time and even there people were loving Get Out.
Coogler pushed the IMAX. The cinema experience is a bigger factor for sinners
The thing about comparing Get Out to Sinners is that I feel that with sinners, the discourse and hype is more about the actual movie. With Get Out, people were talking a lot about how amazing the movie was, but also a decent chunk of the conversation was also about Jordan Peele, everyone knew him for Key & Peele, and so it shocked so many people to see him make a film like Get Out. Also, Get Out was part of the rise of Blumhouse as well.
Silence of the lambs was a fantastic film. One in which many didn’t consider it a horror at the time due to its elevated level of storytelling and production, in a time when horror was nothing more then bloody slashers of teenagers getting slayed with getting laid. Which don’t get me wrong I love the slasher era. But silence of the lambs was something completely different. In modern cinema there is so much elevated horror and more story driven films in the genre. Sinners can’t stand out as much, for the genre has changed so much in the past 2 decades
By that logic, wouldn’t Sinners be too similar to From Dusk Till Dawn to be considered a ”100% original” movie. And it’s not like it’s not inspired by other movies as well.
Most of the Lincoln Square shows in this first run didn’t actually “sell out” because of wheelchair spots that remained open. No way every single screening over two weeks away got every seat including those wheelchair spots filled.
Personally, EEAAO is nowhere close to the hype for Sinners or Get Out
Yeah I agree, Everything Everywhere started as this small thing then exploded on wide release to the point the Oscars couldn't ignore it. It made good money but not on this level. But certainly not until Sinners had an original film had such a big moment in the pop culture landscape.
EEAAO made $143m WW, really not in the same ballpark
Get Out is a better comp, though Us is more recent. Knives Out is another good example, $313m WW
Fake news
They didn’t sell out. But they were selling quickly and it crashed the AMC website — so AMC marked the shows as “sold out” to temporarily disable the bookings. There are still plenty of seats available
Not trying to downplay the Sinners hype though; it’s still selling incredibly well and I have no doubt it will sell out by the next week or sooner
Ryan Coogler has an incredible filmography.
Fruitvale Station: RT 94% (8.1 average) / Metacritic 85/100
Creed: RT 95% (8.0 average) / Metacritic 82/100
Black Panther: RT 96% (8.3 average) / Metacritic 88/100
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: RT 84% (7.2 average) / Metacritic 67/100
Sinners: RT 99% (8.7 average) / Metacritic 83/100
Great to see he's now got enough trust to get an original project like this greenlit.
Black Panther are the only Coogler movies I couldn't get into but that's more of a Marvel / Super hero issue on my own end. Fruitvale Station and Creed are awesome and good enough to see in theaters. Sinners will be the first movie I see in the theater this year and I'm pretty sure it's gonna be at minimum very solid.
It's awesome to see a director gain this kind of clout. I'd love to see a few more directors develop this kind of oeuvre. Coogler might not be Nolan (or even close), but with this kind of track record, if Sinners breaks out, he could become a name that draws audiences.
The Metacritic score for Wakanda Forever is kind of a blemish though, and that's frankly a more accurate barometer than the RT one. Nobody really hated BP2 but few seem to love it either, with most of the measured praise being along the lines of "well with Chadwick dying it could have been a lot worse".
I don't mean to harp on that but given that was his most recent effort until Sinners this feels more like a return to prominence than just another entry in a list of unassailable victories.
> Nobody really hated BP2
Quietly raises hand
What did this movie did to crank up to this level of a rating?? HOLY SHIT!!!
His only movie that didn't knock it out of the park was one where the star died during development and it still has 84% on RottenTomatoes.
I was hoping this was going to be great! Looks like Supernatural!
What is absolutely nuts is that it's doing that with an average 8.7 rating, which is really high and indicates that the consensus is that it's overwhelmingly great, not just better than average.
Outstanding reviews, and once it opens wide, the WOM will spread like wild fire, giving it strong legs.
>Ryan Coogler wasnt messing around when he said he wanted his film to feel like Metallica's "One". A slow build/burn that goes bonkers.
DARKNESS!
IMPRISONING ME
ALL THAT I SEE
ABSOLUTE HORROR
The one negative review is a C+ from Jason Escamilla of EskimoTV:
“Sinners ends with a powerful, surreal bang—but its slow buildup left me restless. A unique vision from Coogler, but whether the destination is worth the wait depends on your patience.”

Does no one else think this movie fell apart in the third act?! As soon as she said “they’re vampires” I rolled my eyes so hard. And from that point on, the whole movie crumbled.
What mom would welcome in the vampires knowing she’s her kids only surviving parent?
The vampire battle was felt so implausible. Some bullets take out the vampires more than others. The wooden stakes work half the time. And 8 people held off 40 vampires for that long?!
The main vampire seems immune to every wooden stake except the last one?!
Why do all the vampires feel the guitar smashed over their heads, but you still need to kill each vampire one by one.
The Stack and Smoke fight result made no sense. So stack who’s trying to kill his brother suddenly stops after smoke makes him promise not to kill Sammy? Why is stack all of the sudden keeping his promise as a vampire after trying to kill his brother and everyone else the rest of the night?
The KKK plot had no build up and felt shoehorned in. You could’ve left that out of the movie and still had a solid ending.
Such a solid movie until it became the walking dead of twilight. Sorry folks, but it doesn’t deserve 98% of RT.
Alright I’ll bite
They were purposely manipulating her - most people cannot think rationally in that sort of situation. You could even argue her pride got the best of her, hence the name of the movie
They said prior to the fight that the bullets slow down vampires, not kill them. They’ll bounce back regardless. None of them were taken out by bullets
It has to be a stake through the heart. Remick wasn’t impaled through the heart until Smoke landed the kill
They felt it because it’s a hivemind and he’s the head vampire, so damage he feels they’ll all feel, hence why they also start screaming after he’s impaled. They feel his pain but not the other way around. Removing the head vampire just removes his influence, which is why Mary and Stack were able to survive
Remmick’s influence over other vampires was negated by emotions throughout the film. It’s why Mary cried when Annie was killed - her true emotions shined through. And since Remmick was laser focused on Sammie, he wasn’t paying attention to Stack to reel him back under his control.
Aside from the clan mention at the start, Remmick straight up tells Smoke that the clansmen he turned were related to the guy who sold them the place and that he was planning to slaughter the brothers. It wasn’t out of nowhere, it was a loose end.
>What mom would welcome in the vampires knowing she’s her kids only surviving parent?
The kind that's been told they're going out to get their daughter and wants to take them out here and there.
> What mom would welcome in the vampires knowing she’s her kids only surviving parent?
They explicitly told her they were going to go kill her daughter, it's not a hard choice.
My initial interpretation of the true ending/epilogue that I haven’t seen mentioned elsewhere: Stack and Mary have adapted to the times, but are also heavily representing the negative aspects of pop culture, particularly black American pop culture, by embracing the sins of money, violence, and immortality, which leaves them feeling empty for eternity. Everyone is a Sinner in some way, but some embrace the real while others embrace the vices. This is why Stack misses “the real”, and why he (and everyone else who chooses or is thrust into that life) will never be free.
Wondering if the movie resonated with anyone else as much as it did with me.
For background, I am a 44 and from the rural south, specifically Brooks County, GA (where a mob chased Mary Turner before she and her unborn baby were murdered in neighboring Lowndes county in 1918). Half of my family migrated up north to escape Jim Crow. I left to join the Army so I am also a combat veteran. I’m a huge music lover and finally I am a horror movie fan and I particularly enjoy “layered” horror movies (like Get Out) and also fusion history/horror concepts (like Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter).
Sinners is the only movie I’ve ever seen that depicts my lived experiences as well as those of my family and also my observations and reflections. Parts of the movie that really stuck with me:
I could go on and on but ultimately read an article where Coogler mentions one of his inspirations was “double consciousness” a concept introduced by W.E.B. Du Bois that describes the psychological experience of individuals, particularly Black Americans, having to simultaneously navigate their own identity and the external perceptions of others, often based on racial prejudice. This creates a sense of internal conflict and fragmentation
Such a good overview! My family is from Nigeria on one side, Texas on the other. While I knew that this film would be culturally significant, I underestimated how connected I’d feel to the characters, especially the Black men. It felt like I was dropped into a day in the life of my ancestors. Stacks mannerisms reminded me of my great uncle. Delta Slim felt like my grandpa. Leave it up to Coogler to make me feel emotional and grounded after seeing a movie that also included vampires. 😂
I liked how they casted Michael A. Jordan and Michael B. Jordan to play twin brothers.
With baby Michelle C. Jordan on the way
My wife came out of the theater and asked me “so what were their real names? Michael B Jordan and..”
“Oh you mean smoke and stack?”
“No like who was playing Michael B Jordan’s brother?”
My wife went the entire movie not realizing he was playing both parts and about dropped our left over popcorn
It was Jonathan Majors.
Micheal C. Jordan
I meeeeean…I rocks with it
No Puerto Rican in him tho so I’m still a bit iffy, cause that’s important I think
I mean, shouldn't we get a mixed race actor to portray Miles? No hate to the guy, he's a good actor from what I saw, but Miles is supposed to be afro-latino, no? So why not find a black & Hispanic young male actor to do the job?
I don’t see many Mixed young actors positioning themselves for the role and on the contrary, we’ve had multiple black male actors say they’re interested.
If there are any afro-Latino actors making a bid for the role then dope but it’s a “raise your hand” kind of game
Fine but why always eye for a black guy?? Why not go for a Puerto Rican Actor??
Yes but every single young black man in the industry is gonna campaign to play Miles.
I don't see it but damn Miles is really THE dream role for a lot young black men, #Motion
Playing him is a guaranteed generational bag if his solo film is successful, any nigga young enough with common sense is gonna chase it lol can’t fault em for trying.
That and DC's Static Shock
What young male actor doesn’t want to be Spider-Man?
>Because not every afro-latino person is gonna look like Miles for one, be young enough for two, be both for three, or be interested at all while being one, two, and three for four
There's millions of actors and if they found someone for Kamala Khan they can find someone for Miles. We just won't know him until he gets cast is the thing
As a Puerto Rican, I would also have loved to play Miles when I was younger. I mean who wouldn't?
Show has been awesome. Episode 8 was the best one so far, just like the rating. Let's see how episode 9 does. 🔥🔥🔥
Ep 9 was fantastic.
We get one more episode tonight? I assumed last one was the season finale lol
Season 1 of Born Again is 9 episodes.
Season 2 will be 8 episodes.
Fascinating that what I consider by a country mile to be the two weakest episodes - 6 & 7 - have gotten such high scores.
I'm willing to bet my adoration for ep 5 (EASILY my favourite of the season) isn't all that widely shared, but I'm surprised the lacklustre Muse stuff isn't putting off more people.
I love episode 5 as well, but I they sabotaged it by making it part of a 9 episode season when it is completely unrelated (yes I know they’re stealing the diamond because Luca needs to pay Fisk, but that is not important at all)
I think if they would have promoted it as a St. Patrick’s Day special, separate from the rest of the season, it would have been a lot more appreciated.
I agree the Muse side plot was crap and a bit of a waste of time, I really liked the Bank heist episode and it's my favourite so far
It pains me to see ep 4 that low. It’s still my favorite of the season.
Well deserved, this is now easily my favorite MCU Disney+ original show. Really excited for the finale and season 2.
It's still a whole point higher than I expected 😉
Here’s my 2 cents. The show is great and feels amazing especially as a childhood DD fan. They took their gold they had an expanded on it.
My only criticism, which actually might be a super huge pay off depending on where they’re going - you can tell which episodes are before the reshoots and which aren’t.
The first episode and ep 8 had such a nice visual and cinematic look, but everything in between seemed like it had a worse budget. The final scene of ep 1 was gorgeous and slow and felt really amazing.
I’m hoping that what just happened is a turning point where the show switches to this stylized look and can be explained by the character finally getting to that point - even if it wasn’t intended. I’m hoping going forward this show feels like ep 1 and 8
I feeling the show pretty focused on our lead characters and didn't gave the other characters much room to grow or show their side of story. These could be from the original shoots
This series doesn’t really play around and does its best to hook you pretty early in its first episode. I don’t want to give any specific details because I feel like the less you know, the better.
I’m not normally a binge watch person, but I just had to know the answers to the questions in each episode, and ended up watching the whole thing this morning. Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman both give amazing performances in every episode, and the rest of the cast are equally as good. I honestly can’t believe I haven’t seen it suggested more.
Its the perfect one season show. I’m a little disappointed they renewed it for a second season.
The new season is about another case. I thought it was going to be more anthology vibe but then I saw the same detective so that is sort of annoying.
Same detective, completely different case taking place in Ambrose's hometown.
I’m cool with it as long as Biel’s not the main character. I think she did well but I want to see Pullman’s character solve more crimes.
Maybe Biel’s character can get worked in a bit but I don’t want to see how there was more to her time with JD. It always feels forced when a story gets wrapped up like it did in the show then reopened like the first part was nothing.
Who would’ve thought the “this isn’t where I parked my car” guy could be so good in a serious role. Love him.
Even though he was underutilized, I enjoyed seeing him along Timothy Olyphant in Justified.
I love that guy. He did a great job in Sneaky Pete too.
Sneaky Pete.. here it is con man tries to leave life behind, ooh here's a fun fact you made out with your sister man!
The recurring song from this is still stuck in my head after months.
It is my favorite song right now!
I had finally gotten it out of my head.
Jessica Biel is such an under rated actress. She's so much better than a lot of others famous for their looks.
This and Westmoreland's death. The more preventable the death, the sadder, for the most part imo.
His character honestly made season 1 the best. When he revealed himself to be DB Cooper, that was peak television
Preventable and not needed. Ayoung gun like David who was hungry for acceptance…gone.
Crazy when I discovered the actor ended up in prison for drunk driving and killing a teenager.
He was a great character by all means. But let's be honest, he was old, I don't think he would've lasted long with all the running they were doing during the escape
It is sad, but I think the saddest death on Prison Break goes to Haywire.
i think about his death so much 😭
Totally forgot about Marilyn, but yes. Still, Haywire wins for me.
His death comes so out of nowhere. I didn’t really like his character but it still hits hard because it’s so unfair.
That is because he was being written off because his actor had some legal trouble
This man was indirectly responsible for Tweeners demise.
Tweener hits extra hard for me cuz he fell in love literally an episode or two before his death, and the death scene was so sudden. Literally “sorry I need to kill you pew pew” 😩
You book your tickets to rewatch it while the credits are still playing from the first watch. Go watch Sinners, y’all.
Sinners is likely to be the first movie I get tickets to twice since getting A-List in January. Especially since we're going to be going to 4/week pretty soon.
It was Heart Eyes for me this year. But I'm going for round 2 on Sinners as well.
So far, it’s my favorite and best movie of 2025.
I lived warfare, warefare and sinners are the onky ones I've seen twice this yr
Same. Not much competition though sadly lol. But this raised the bar high. I doubt it’ll be my favorite at the end of the year since it’s still only a 8/10 for me.
Great great film to kick start blockbusters this summer.
It’s also an 8/10 for me. I was expecting something extraordinary based on all the hype reviews. It’s nothing close to an Interstellar or Inception film, but it is done well and has great acting and vibe to it
Same! It’s so much more than a vampire movie. I’ve been checking out interviews from Ryan and the cast just to get more insight behind the film.
Would have been my favorite in 24 too.
Agreed. I need to go see it again.
Left sinners and before I got back to concessions I booked a ticket for a 70mm showing in NYC because regular IMAX just wasn’t enough. Movie is incredible
I liked it, but I don't think it's as good as some people are saying. Maybe I'm just not seeing it but I felt like it was 40 minutes of a good movie stuck in a 130 minute okay movie.
Yeah, same for me. I didn't really care about the vampires. I was more interested in how Sammy's music could open up dimensions. Also, the fight in the barn was messy. They had 2-3 extras (people) that they didn't even show before the fight, but they magically appeared and got slaughtered.
It was excellent week for me. I really enjoyed everything i watched. Especially Sinners. It was awesome.
At the drop of a hat, I am ready to rock n' roll and watch HEAT for the 37th time.
I also really liked The Killer. I understand it isn't a perfect and timeless movie, but I love hitman/assassin movies. It was fun to see a guy that is soulless, not because he kills people, but because he is a corporate shill. When Hertz, Ace Hardware, and air miles are your most invaluable tools as an assassin you've officially gone made being an assassin an everyday grind.
vanisher was SO GOOD might be my aoty up there with deafheaven and mckinley dixon
SAME IDK WHAT TO RATE IT ON LETTERBOXD Its up there with eusexua and revengeseekers for me
I've watched this movie about three times now, each time getting more invested in the characters and the setting, but the batshit third act just doesn't land. It's a good movie that doesn't quite make it to great. Still respect Danny Boyle for trying anything.
4 for the nice guys? Jail for you.
Just watched last night and this is super underrated. Love the sc-fi vibe and an surprising all star cast
I only see bangers. 👅
Omg twin I watched Sunshine last night...
Twinnnn. We might be interlinked
I’ve had Blue Velvet on my watchlist forever, must get around to it!
I didn’t even notice the 4 new watches, I was stuck on that poster
also rewatched Heat this week. timeless film !!!
Please go see this so hollywood will invest in ORIGINAL films. I love established ip but its time to move beyond nostalgia bait. I need to see a sequel to this, a remmick prequel, and native american sequel. Plus the music was amazing.
In additiom ive literally never even heard of a 10% drop. Thats in sane. A true hit.
I’m not opposed to a Sinners Universe as long as it expands on the lore…
Yeah that’s true. I saw that opinion before I saw the movie. Some people want a Sinners Universe and I’m not opposed to that idea but after seeing the movie, the twins prequel would be in the period piece genre, not the horror genre, though there could be some horror incorporated.
Just saw this last night and want to see it again in IMAX. Phenomenal movie and I do not like horror films. Jordan Peele ones are the only ones I’ve gone to a theater to see til this one. I was successfully influenced to see this one.
I saw someone say they wanted to see a prequel of the twins. For me that would be great but I’ll leave it at that due to potential spoilers.
Black horror doing numbers is cool. Hope it make young black creatives try to do horror. Hopefully we get black werewolf horror one day
I’m so glad a Black horror film finally made it big. I was telling my gf a few weeks ago how we need more of these. We were super disappointed with “Woman in the Yard”. Sinners is a major W!
Woman in the Yard was disappointing and Peele puts out films every 2-3 years so Coogler did great putting out sinners
I've been dying for a show about black witches.
Have you heard of the show Wicked City? It's about young modern-day witches in Atlanta. It streams on ALLBLK. It has three seasons so far. I never looked at it so I don't know if it's good or not. I saw the trailer and didn't really grab me.
didn’t the director say he didn’t want this to be a franchise
They all say that. If this hit 500 million they 100% gona do it.
Aye some of them tubi movies hit different tho 😂😂😂😂
That's part of his deal. He controls any spinoffs.
