Reviews of "The Sinner" Series

Overall Reception

"The Sinner" has received varied reviews across its seasons, with many viewers praising the first season for its compelling storyline and strong performances. Bill Pullman's portrayal of Detective Harry Ambrose is frequently highlighted as a standout element throughout the series [1:1][2:4]. While some viewers found subsequent seasons to be less engaging than the first, others appreciated the evolution of the show and continued to enjoy the series [1:6][4:2].

Season 1

Season 1 is widely regarded as the strongest season, with many viewers considering it one of the best crime dramas they've seen [3:5][4:3]. The plot twists and character development were praised, and the season's conclusion was deemed satisfying [3]. Jessica Biel's performance also received positive mentions, contributing to the season's success [5:11].

Season 2

Opinions on Season 2 are mixed. Some viewers felt that it did not live up to the expectations set by the first season [5:7], while others enjoyed it more than other seasons [1:6]. Criticisms often focused on the pacing and the acting, particularly regarding the child actor in this season [5:7][5:12].

Season 3

Season 3 received criticism for its storyline, which some viewers found lacking in coherence and depth [1:9][5:8]. However, the performances of Matt Bomer and Bill Pullman were praised, with many fans forgiving the narrative shortcomings due to their strong acting [1:10]. Despite the criticisms, some viewers still considered it worth watching [5:1].

Season 4

Season 4 was seen as an improvement over Season 3 by some viewers, bringing back elements that made the earlier seasons successful [1:11]. It was appreciated for its return to a more engaging narrative, although opinions varied on whether it matched the quality of Season 1 [4:2].

Recommendations

For those who enjoyed "The Sinner," similar shows like "Sharp Objects" and "Mindhunter" have been recommended by viewers [2:2][3:1]. These series offer a dark and psychological exploration of crime, akin to the tone of "The Sinner." Additionally, "True Detective" Season 1 is often mentioned as a comparable series with high acclaim [3:5].

ORIGINAL POST

Just finished season 4 and, sadly, the last. I was not expecting to be so captivated by this series. I typically am not super drown into "who dun it's", but man, what a compelling ahow and a grand performance of the lead character, detective Harry Ambrose. What did y'all think?

Honestly . . . the story for Season 3 was kind of terrible.

But Bomer and Pullman did the most amazing job with the script they were given. And they are so good, that I can just forgive it.

I loved their scenes together!

Most people don't care for season 3 and I can see why, but Bomer and Pullman were just so amazing in that season and their performances are why I love it so much.

I liked S1 very much but later ones had that "we had a an idea, made a limited series with it but after it was a success we tried to make more but failed to capture what made it good" feel to it. S2 was decent, S3 was so, so bad and S4 was a surprising improvement.

Yeah, a couple episodes into season 2 I wanted to bail but the sunk cost fallacy wouldn’t let me. I watched the whole series and really wanted it to get good again but it never did. The first season was worth watching, but after that don’t waste your time.

Excellent. First season was absolutely killer, but the entire series is worth it. The first time I watched Bill Pullman was as a child for Independence Day. He never disappoints.

"The Sinner" is a great, dark and serious detective series, with the first season available on Netflix. Why hadn't I heard anything about it?

Posted by okami31 · in r/television · 6 years ago

My fiancee and I stumbled upon it, randomly looking for well-rated series available on Netflix. We finished it in two days, and it was overall great. Very well acted, good pace, keeps you guessing, and ends in a satisfying way.

I had never heard anything about it. No mention of it in social media or other people talking about it. Is it because it came out in the USA cable channel fairly recently (2017 for first season) and cord-cutters or heavy streamers wouldn't have heard of it until it popped on Netflix?

Anyway, I heartily recommend it if you enjoy dark and tense dramatic criminal series such as "True Detective", "The Killing", "Mindhunter" or "Sharp Objects".

The night of, the fall, river, tin star s1, save me (incredible! And lenny james!), the sinner s1 (particularly impressed by the tremendous acting), 1983 (love celebral thinking series), happey valley, tabula, seven seconds, safe, the missing s1 & s2, and then there were none, the honourable woman, the shadow line (last two superb) ,broadchurch, true detective s1 and s3

Oh, True Detective season 3 is worth it? I heard it was better than 2 but still not great.

1 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 6 years ago

Depends if you're listening to the right people. It's very good. It makes season 2 even worse and the showrunner went back to his roots as in season 1. I would say where s1 was more mythology, season 3 is more unreliable narrator elements, which is very engrossing. I will also say this, if you liked Shap objects, I cant imagine anyone not liking this EXCEPT that it's more of a thinking show. Theres 3 different timelines. It's very impressive how its written and its tight, though theres only 2 episodes to go, so I'm reluctant to say it belongs in the same sentence because right now, these 2 episodes can break the series as it's been building up to what could be an exceptional finale. It's a series where two characters take ten steps before saying anything. Not everyone like a hot burn. Personally, such shows don't bore me. They captivate me.

Omg it was by far the best Crime/drama I've seen in a while! 10 out 10 I recommend to a Friend. I loved all of the plot twists and the ending was so satisfying to see. I've been wanting to watch this show ever since I've seen previews on cable, when it came out on netflix I was super excited to see it. The show was better than I expected. Also did anyone else cringe so hard when Frankies dad pushed the needle in her arm hard and she was saying ow? Gotta admit I was touching my arms bc the cringe was real ugh!

I started watching sharp objects before this show and to me it was so bad I quit watching it. As I was looking for another show I stumbled upon the Sinner and boy am I glad i found it. Sharp Objects just tries really hard to be edgy and so far it's all drama and very little crime, like the past few episodes don't really add anything new to the story except for the fact that they're all alcoholics, whether they're 15 or 50.

Omg. I binge-watched this show today with my friends on a whim and wow I loved it so much! Yes, that scene and the bone-crushing scene were SO hard to watch. Also the sis-sest... ugh honestly one of the most disturbing any of us has watched. We were so intrigued the whole way through, and were excited to hear that there will be a season 2 soon.

I haven't been able to get into Netflix show in a while because I just found it too overwhelming, so I've been sticking to youtube. But this show makes me want to look for shows in the same vein/ caliber. Open to suggestions!

Oh I totally forgot about the bone crushing lol but when I saw Phoebe get her rib cage crushed I was shocked af ! It all made sense after that but damn I was like wtf throughout that whole episode. Also forgot about that sis-sest too lol but tbh I wasn't too shocked I mean she did kiss her lol I liked how despite how much Phoebe was bed ridden she was much more daring than her older sister. Netflix has a LOT of good tv shows like damn I watched so many tv shows on there lol maybe you might like Bates Motel haven't finished watching it sorry I'm rambling lol

There were also two actresses in the second season that looked so much alike I had trouble telling them apart and it drives me insane when they do that. There is no other person in the world that could have been cast other than this look alike? And I can tell you, they definitely could have gotten a different actress for the role played by Hannah Gross cause she is kind of a boring actress. She was in Mindhunter too and I could have not cared less about her character. Carrie Coon is great though, so I would have kept her, she was also good in Gone Girl.

It reminded me a lot of Black Panther in the sense that it was hyped as the BEST marvel movie ever and it was...just ok.

Good acting. Great cinematography. It had some real cringey lines, IMO. There seemed to be a running theme about eating pussy in it for some reason. Unfortunately it did end up pulling the trope of "white men are the REAL evil ones." I know it's Jim Crow era, but that last scene just seemed so self indulgent.

All in all I think it's a perfectly fine film with a well seasoned director and lead actor. Was really hoping it would be better but it was just ok.

Did you stay after the first credits for the scene Stack and Mary visit old Sammy? Not saying this will change your opinion, but it gives it more context. Stack and Mary were both hiding in the barn when the sun comes up. The klan was going to search it and the sunlight from opening it up would have killed them. Smoke defended the barn to save his brother and Mary.

Otherwise my thoughts as well. A little over hyped, but I'd say 8 or 8.5/10. Visually great, I loved the pacing and character development you rarely get in horror, but the acting definitely saved the writing.

with that said, I also felt that they were trying too hard to be too many things. shouldbe stuck with more horror elements. We should have gotten to know the "team" better and build tension in the Juke. I loved the villain and the songs. What happened to the indians???

Highly Recommend Watching "The Sinner"

I highly recommend the series The Sinner to anyone going through withdrawal for Cruel Summer. The show has a similar format, it's heavy on the mystery, and plays with time a bit with flashbacks and flashforwards. I've seen every season of it, it's an anthology series, like I hope Cruel Summer will be and has a pretty consistently great cast. It's also like Cruel Summer it's from Jessica Biel's production company too.

What’s it about?

Without giving too much away about the plot and all the twist and turns that come I'll just give you an idea of what happens in the first few moments of each season.

The first season is about a woman who murders someone on a day out at the beach with her family and doesn't remember why she did it. (Very much the best season of the series)

Second season, is about a little boy whose parents get poisoned while going on a trip. (I actually liked this season a lot kind of it reminds me of some of the plot points in Cruel Summer.)

Third season, is about a family man that gets into a car accident with an old friend from college... (Vague I know but a lot goes on there.)

Edit: They actually have pretty decent trailers for each season I should have linked them in my original post.

Agreed, it's great, season 3 was kinda infuriating to me but in a good way lol. Cruel Summer is a very different series to me, a great series but very different too even with some similarities between them.

The Sinner season reviews

Key Considerations for "The Sinner" Season Reviews:

  1. Overall Reception: Each season of "The Sinner" has generally received positive reviews from both critics and audiences, praised for its writing, character development, and psychological depth.

  2. Season Structure: The show is an anthology series, with each season focusing on a different crime and its psychological implications. This structure allows for fresh narratives and character arcs each season.

  4. Themes: The series delves into themes of trauma, morality, and the human psyche, which resonate well with viewers looking for more than just a typical crime drama.

  5. Pacing and Tone: Some reviews mention that the pacing can vary, with certain seasons being slower but building tension effectively, while others may feel more fast-paced and thrilling.

Takeaways:

  • Season 1 is often regarded as the strongest, with a gripping narrative and strong performances.
