TL;DR "The Sinner" has not yet won any awards, but it is a strong contender for upcoming award nominations based on its critical acclaim and box office success.
Awards Prospects
While "The Sinner" has not yet won any awards, discussions indicate that it is considered a strong contender for future nominations. Predictions suggest it could receive multiple nominations across major award ceremonies such as the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards [2]. Potential categories include Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and various technical awards like Best Original Score and Best Cinematography
[2:2].
Critical Acclaim and Box Office Success
"The Sinner" has received significant critical acclaim, with an impressive Metacritic score and strong box office performance [1:3]. This success is comparable to other critically acclaimed films like "Moonlight" and "12 Years a Slave"
[1:3]. The film's narrative, which addresses themes of racism and assimilation in the Jim Crow South, alongside its financial success, positions it well for award consideration
[1:7].
Industry Buzz and Audience Reception
There is considerable buzz and passion surrounding "The Sinner," which could influence its awards trajectory. The film has generated word-of-mouth excitement, leading to special screenings and widespread audience engagement [1:2]. Its unique storytelling and cinematic experience have resonated with audiences, further boosting its profile as an awards contender
[4].
Challenges and Considerations
Despite its prospects, there are challenges and considerations regarding its potential nominations. Some users express skepticism about its screenplay nomination chances, particularly with BAFTA [2:4]
[2:6]. Additionally, while the film has received high praise, there are varying opinions on its overall impact compared to other films
[5].
In summary, while "The Sinner" hasn't won any awards yet, its critical acclaim, box office success, and industry buzz make it a promising candidate for upcoming award nominations.
can you believe it’s been 8 years since a black ensemble cast film was in the the best picture running. Sinner has a 84 on MC 363m at box office becoming the highest grossing orginal film since inception at domestic box office. Also Ryan has a high chance of winning and becoming the first black director. It’s June and people are still talking about sinners, I don’t see it slowing it and seeing it reach higher peaks in October.
I just don’t see anything preventing this from at least a best pic nomination. These days I think people are fast and loose with the word lock, but this film seems to be one of the
I think people doubting it are underestimating the level of word of mouth buzz and genuine fan passion this movie has.
There was a petition circulated to get a screening in the town where it's set, which doesn't even have a movie theater, which was signed by thousands of people. It happened, they set it up in an auditorium: https://www.mpbonline.org/blogs/news/ryan-coogler-is-bringing-sinners-home-to-clarksdale-for-a-series-of-screenings-qa/
If the Academy wants to reward movies that put butts in seats without being based on existing IP, they should not snub this film, and I don't think they will.
Yeah, right now I have it as a very solid, like, 7th in BP. I think the overall narrative and box office success are undeniable. It’s an original movie, “about” racism, assimilation, and the Jim Crowe south, and it’s a big financial success in an industry that hasn’t fully recovered from COVID. On top do that, it isn’t just strong BTL, but Coogler speaks reverently of his craftspeople and acknowledges how much they affected the final product. Those branches will likely respond really well to that and it might be enough to get it into BP on its own. Even if the rest of it falls off a cliff I would be shocked if it weren’t nominated for score and song.
But there are way too many unknowns for me to say it’s a front runner.
I like Sinner as much as the next guy but it’s no guarantee that it will get a best picture or any Oscar nominations.
84 MC and smashed at the box office. Nothing is going against the film. It has the passion industry support that moonlight and 12 years a slave, EEAAO and parasite all had.
Last year people thought Dune Part Two was going to be a serious contender at the Oscars. Its metascore was slightly lower but it was a bigger success at the box office. By the time awards season came around nobody expected it to win anything but some technical awards
or any Oscar nominations.
I feel like its a shoe in for Best Song nomination
That makes it 4. So “Sinners” will be the first film of this kind to be nominated in 7 years.
And Ryan Coogler directed that one too!
Looking at the release slate for the rest of the year, along with festivals, what can top it? I only really see:
-After the Hunt
-Sentimental Value
-Marty Supreme
One Battle is going to be awesome, but I guarantee the Academy is going to treat it like Inherent Vice.
Yeah and it’s only beeb out what, two months?
Wait til it tops the Nielsen charts on July 4 weekend when it arrives on HBO Max.
At this rate, I think we all basically know that Sinners will be an awards contender. But to what extent? Here's my prediction of where it will end up in terms of nominations at awards ceremonies next year.
Golden Globes (6 nominations):
Critics' Choice Awards (14 nominations):
Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards (2 nominations):
British Academy Film & Television Awards (6 nominations):
Academy Awards (11 nominations):
I think most to least likely are
Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Original Song (I Lied to You), Best Casting, Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Sound (here is where I am drawing the line), Best Director, Best Makeup/Hairstyling, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Supporting Actor, Best Lead Actor, Best Supporting Actress
Yeah that feels about right. I think people are overestimating it in screenplay right now. Like I don’t see why, if Bafta doesn’t like the movie, they’d nominate it there
I’d have Song above Costumes and Sound over everything but song and score.
I think with 6 slots Michael B Jordan will get in at golden globes. I also think it will get 1 individual nom at SAG, don't know who but it just kinda feels like a thing they would fo
I have a hard time imagining Michael B. Jordan missing for Golden Globe — Drama Actor. But I more or less agree with your predictions
I highly doubt BAFTA would give it 7 nominations just to snub it from best film, even if they are allergic to films with largely PoC casts
This might be a stupid question but I’m genuinely curious - do people think the BAFTA voting body is racist? I’ve seen it a few times on here and I’d like to know why… I remember the oscarsowhite scandal but I’ve never heard anybody talk about specific years that BAFTA shut out POC/films with mostly non-white casts. Have they ever announced that they were taking action to diversify their voting body?
>do people think the BAFTA voting body is racist? I’ve heard it a few times on here and I’d like to know why
I don't know if they're racist or not, but they've notably never nominated Denzel Washington. They even snubbed Lily Gladstone for Killers of the flower moon.
BAFTA has a pretty storied history of nominating specifically Black American projects way less than their peer organizations. Black British talent do a bit better
> do people think the BAFTA voting body is racist?
Yes.
> Have they ever announced that they were taking action to diversify their voting body?
That’s what the juries were for
I haven’t seen it yet but the way people are talking about it on here has me so excited. The Substance/Nosferatu this year, Sinners/Franknestin possibly next year, I’m here for the possible horror revival at the Oscar’s

The first critic that will break this 100%, people are going to want that person’s blood 🤣
It's at 98% as of now, so someone already broke it.
Do they use the trump tariff formula to calculate the rating for this movie?
Interesting to see what the audience score will be
Your post was removed for being off-topic for this sub.
I predict 1 billion dollar opening weekend
It was released in my country pretty late. So I just watched it on IMAX yesterday, and man, it was truly something else!
It's been a while since I've seen such a magnificent original film. The plot, cinematography, visuals, performances, subtexts, and many other things, were a top-notch level of experience.
And while genre films mostly don't, this one still lingers in my mind. As if I've read an unforgettably well-written novel, or had an exceptionally supernatural dream... Coogler is one heck of a filmmaker for creating something as amazing as this.
So yeah, what I am trying to say is, while I usually don't join in the hype-chain as much as others do (not particularly because I want to, it just happens), this time, all these kudos for this film were true. And I can't wait to go see it again tomorrow.
I saw this masterpiece in IMAX with my partner a couple of weeks ago. Was one of the best theatrical experiences i've had in awhile!
I don’t get it, but it’s nice to have those experiences at the movies
It bums me out so much that this movie made me feel nothing. Still waiting for a movie this year that actually blows me away.
Never buy into hype. I know several people who got disappointed by the movie.
I wonder if they would had enjoyed it for what it was rather than expecting it to be a masterpiece like everyone said.
I'm avoiding watching it for now because I know I'm about to have an intense hyperfixation lmao
I’m autistic and ended up listening to a few of the songs on the sountrack on repeat for about a week after seeing it
I'm still insanely jealous of people who actually have access to IMAX 😭
But yes definitely one of the best movies I've seen in a long time
I saw this on opening day (very rare for me) knowing only that: it was Ryan Coogler whose previous work I enjoyed, Michael B Jordan was in it whose work I previously enjoyed, and that it was a vampire movie (which, as a horror fan I’m not typically wowed by vampire movies, they’re my least favorite classic monster). So there was no hype for me to buy into luckily. One of, if not the best theater experience I’ve had this century. I was grinning ear to ear through most of the movie, and when I wasn’t grinning I was getting weepy because the craft of this movie was so incredible. People can call the script messy all they want, I don’t even care, to me other than one detail (which by no means ruins the movie for me at all) all the “holes” and “sloppiness” either aren’t a bother or are majorly overblown.
Sounds like an amazing experience
Maybe for:
Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Original Score, Film Editing, Cinematography, Costume Design, Production Design, Sound
The academy has a bias against horror, so that will likely work against its chances of any oscar nominations
I think you’re talking about wins but lately there’s been some good horror Oscar nominations. I do agree the contemporary horror will still not be nominated, sinners isn’t the usual jumpscare horror so it’ll definitely be nominated
Sinners is kind of a genre mishmash. It's definitely horror but it's also a period drama and very nearly a musical.
The Substance was more of a horror film and did well last year
Substance got multiple top nominations, as did Get Out, and some would argue Parasite hovers in the horror genre (it’s at least in the Venn diagram of that masterpiece). Historically you’re right, but the past 10 years have shown a shift on the genre for Oscars. I don’t think it’s on the level of those films, but confident it will get multiple nominations.
Meh. The Academy bias against genre films in general seems to be disappearing. Horror, sci-fi, action, and comic book movies have all gotten best picture noms in the last few years.
No, the real question is, will MBJ get nominated once or twice?
You’re missing the one that is almost a guarantee: Original Song
Heck it’s probably going to win Original Song.
That or Wicked For Good. I think Wicked For Good might win if one of the songs from that film will be a hit, because it'll be more recent and thus more on the mind of the voters. If neither of the Wicked songs are hits (or worse, if both are bad) then Sinners can still pull off a win
I Lied to You by Miles Caton
Yes. But this has been asked at least 7-8 times on multiple award communities in the past 3 days lol.
What an Irish Vampire might look like.
“Mom can I watch Sinners?”
“We have Sinner at home.”
I think you were supposed to watch Sinner5, the fifth movie in the Sinner franchise
Sinn5r: Too Sin, Too Furious
Personally I though Sinn3r: Tokyo Drift was the peak of the franchise.
Where all other franchises were shitting with each sequels, the audience ‘plead the fifth’, only for this one.
I thought it was a tennis bio-pic.
I think I watched the wrong movie too, what is this?
No this is the right one
I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is racism but let’s face it there was a lot of racism in 1930s Mississippi so I wouldn’t call that aspect woke.
Also, that aspect of the story, while important, does not overshadow a solid vampire flick with a cool setting and good acting.
I would give it a look if you like the genre.
I didn't like it very much. The director seemed more enamored with his talent vs telling an interesting story.
Plenty of things to praise but I ended up bored and dying for it to end, which it never does.
I'm still watching it.
I’m pretty anti woke- this movie wasn’t woke. It isn’t woke to discuss things that actually happened. And while the main vampire is white, his back story is also of oppression which is highlighted. And the klan literally were terrible white men killing black men for existing. That isn’t woke.
People who think this movies message is too anti white are like the retarded people who think the Green Book isn't anti white enough.
CD just proved himself not a grifter and some of y'all are hating it.
He's spot on in pointing out the shit of most films. However it seems nearly all of his recos are shit as well.
I'd argue there hasn't been a good big budget film or tv to come out in the past 5 years or so. Except of course Emelia Perez, there's nothing better than seeing a drug kingpin turned tranny who sneakily moves back in with family then becomes jealous of the ex's boyfriend. Then becomes a celebrated saint by the public.
You speak the truth. Creed sucks
What did you think of Creed?
The drinker doesn't appear to be active here. How can one tell him all of his recommendations over the past year are all trash?
He even said daredeveil reborn was good early on lmao.
After reading the comments on there, the movie delivers a simple message: WHITE MAN BAD. Has CD just given up and accepts the message now?
Why don't you just go see it and make your own decision? They literally show other races as the vampires as well in the trailer so your white man bad assumption is totally fucking wrong.
But that’s… not the message of this film at all. Sinners is a very good flick.
You book your tickets to rewatch it while the credits are still playing from the first watch. Go watch Sinners, y’all.
Same! It’s so much more than a vampire movie. I’ve been checking out interviews from Ryan and the cast just to get more insight behind the film.
Sinners is likely to be the first movie I get tickets to twice since getting A-List in January. Especially since we're going to be going to 4/week pretty soon.
It was Heart Eyes for me this year. But I'm going for round 2 on Sinners as well.
Left sinners and before I got back to concessions I booked a ticket for a 70mm showing in NYC because regular IMAX just wasn’t enough. Movie is incredible
Agreed. I need to go see it again.
Lincoln Square
Would have been my favorite in 24 too.
Same. Not much competition though sadly lol. But this raised the bar high. I doubt it’ll be my favorite at the end of the year since it’s still only a 8/10 for me.
Great great film to kick start blockbusters this summer.
It’s also an 8/10 for me. I was expecting something extraordinary based on all the hype reviews. It’s nothing close to an Interstellar or Inception film, but it is done well and has great acting and vibe to it
I lived warfare, warefare and sinners are the onky ones I've seen twice this yr
Honestly the vampires in the third act ruined it for me. I liked the first two thirds then it torpedoed. I agree that it would’ve been much more interesting if they would’ve explored the dimensions aspect. That dancing across the ages scene was the best of the movie. And then it got weird. I felt hoodwinked.
That’s what I’m saying. Very good movie, but I don’t get what’s so amazing about the movie.
Always stunning her as cat woman in the Batman with Christian bale omg so hot
So gorgeous
Those eyes are just stunning!
