TL;DR If you enjoyed "The Sinner," consider watching "True Detective," "Broadchurch," and "Mindhunter" for similar dark, atmospheric, and investigative themes.
Dark and Atmospheric Crime Dramas
Several shows capture the dark and atmospheric essence of "The Sinner." "True Detective," particularly Season 1, is frequently recommended for its compelling storytelling and deep dive into criminal investigations [1:1],
[2:3],
[3:5]. "Broadchurch" is another popular choice, praised for its intricate murder mystery set in a small town with intertwined stories
[1:1],
[2:2],
[5:2].
Psychological Thrillers
For those who enjoy psychological thrillers, "Mindhunter" is a must-watch. It explores the minds of serial killers through FBI investigators, offering insights into both the criminals and the investigators themselves [2:4],
[5:4]. Other recommendations include "Tell Me Your Secrets," which has been noted for its similarity to "The Sinner" in terms of suspense and intrigue
[5:1].
International and Period Pieces
Some international and period pieces also offer the mysterious and thrilling vibe similar to "The Sinner." "Quicksand," a Swedish show available on Netflix, deals with violent crime and memory loss [4:2]. "The Alienist" provides a historical twist on crime investigation with its dark narrative
[3:2].
Additional Recommendations
Other notable mentions include "Marcella," "Luther," and "The Missing," all of which are praised for their gripping narratives and complex characters [5:3],
[2:1]. For those open to supernatural elements, "Midnight Mass" offers a similar setting with dark secrets, though it includes horror elements
[3:1],
[3:6].
These shows provide a mixture of crime, psychology, and mystery that fans of "The Sinner" are likely to enjoy.
And I don't mind paying! Thanks.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I ended up watching the two seasons of The Missing back to back - another great show. I will definitely take into account your suggestions. I have seen True Detective already which I love. thanks again
I second Broadchurch. Or Safe or The Five. All on Netflix
The Dark
7 seconds
Dark has that gloomy vibe going.
True Detective is a must and has the police investigation focus as The Sinner. It is really really great.
Broadchuch might be your cup of tea, it's really good too.
I really love these psychological thrillers, tends to be the only shows to keep me interested. I need a new show to watch so recommendations of well made, shows that’ll make my brain spin are appreciated!
I’m a huge Mindhunter fan and I also loved the Shield. I’d say the first season or two is much lighter than the rest. I will always say it’s a damn good show that I would watch a third time from beginning to end.
True Detective, Season 1
Not sure if they're exactly similar but they're really good shows.
Home Before Dark

Tell Me A Story
Severance

The woman in the house
True Story
You Don't Know Me
Rules Of The Game
The Booth at the End
Innocent
Panic
Candy
The Thing About Pam
Bates Motel
Are subtitles ok? I just came across a show from Iceland called TRAPPED. Seasons 1&2 are on Prime and season 3 (ENTRAPPED) is on Netflix. It was good and twisty.
Similar to Mindhunter and The Sinner, but not convinced i would consider them all “psychological thrillers”. Everyone has different definitions. Regardless, they all make for good viewing.
-The Missing/Baptise
-Capitani
-Delhi Crime
-Valhalla Murders
———————————————————.
-The Tunnel
-Safe
-Stay Close
-The Stranger
-Tell Me Your Secrets
-Hit & Run
I’m sad it’s over. I like dark atmospheric cop shows like this. Any suggestions?
True Detective, Broadchurch, Mare of Eastown, The Alienist (it’s a time period piece but it is dark). Baptieste, Bosch, Deadwater Fell, Hinterland, Line of Duty, Luther, Mindhunter, Prime Suspect, Shetland, Ripper Street, The Fall, The Killing, The Missing, Top of the Lake, Wire in the Blood.
Plus 1 to all those. Wire in the Blood is fucking amazing. I wish I could see it again for the first time.
Broadchurch 💯
True Detective S1
Okay so it's not a cop show, but Midnight Mass reminded me of s4 of The Sinner a lot. Set on a small island community, a dark secret, an outsider coming to the island, all very similar. But it has supernatural horror elements so if you're not into that you probably won't like it.
Midnight Mass was amazing
Sharp objects
I've watched the Five, the fall and broadchurch and enjoyed all.
Quicksand has similar concepts with “violent crime, main character has memory loss, fucked up shit” and I actually preferred it over The Sinner, but it is in Swedish. It’s on Netflix with subtitles though.
I don't usually like watching foreign shows with English dubbed over but this show was PHENOMENAL. Definitely a lot like the Sinner.
Top of the Lake is one kind of similar and not mentioned yet.
Second this! Also True Detective.
Just finished True Detective, highly recommend it. Also been into The Outsider on HBO, check it out.
I remember watching Top of the Lake but it being kinda unmemorable for me. I remember it being good, but I just moved on to something else when I finished it rather than diving into more about the story
Unbelievable.
Mindhunter.
Safe.
The Act.
Dirty John.
Sharp Objects.
A Very English Scandal.
London Spy.
The killing. Nice and Dark. Or True Detective season 1.
Yess. Dark! Also, the Returned (French version is best)
American Crime is on Netflix and, like The Sinner, is an anthology style show.
So below I put down some series I’ve already seen that gave me that psychological/mysterious feel like The Sinner did:
Behind Her Eyes: The series with the girl who has night terrors and the psychology guy who has an affair with her.
I’ve also seen Somewhere Between: The series where the woman gets a second chance to save her daughter from getting kidnapped and killed.
And Of course The Sinner: Detective Harry unravels the truth behind 3 suspects traumatic and bizarre pasts. All while fighting his own haunting past.
These series are hands down the 3 I’ve seen on Netflix and I’m looking for more that are similar to them. They’re all psychological for sure and mysterious.
Broadchurch is a great murder mystery/ police investigation show from a few years back with Olivia Coleman and David Tennant. Set in a small town so everyone’s stories are super intertwined. Great acting. The first season is the best but all three are good.
One of my fave shows ever. It's so good!
Marcella - netflix Luther - netflix Tell me your secrets - prime Orphan black - prime (this one is less crime and more scifi as the seasons go on)
Tell me your secrets felt a lot like Sinner season 1. Definitely recommend
Mind Hunter. The FBI investigators try to learn more about serial killers and at the same time the audience learn more about the investigators.
The undoing on HBO. Fantastic!
Edit: sorry, just saw you specifically said Netflix.
Oh no it’s fine ! I have HBO too I’ll check it out it looks interesting
“You” on Netflix
Seen it that’s a GREAT one
I’ve never really seen anything quite like this, it’s unusual plot just really intrigued me. Can anyone recommend me series that are a bit out of the box?
All these great. End of the f ing world. Loved it
If you liked "End of the F**king World", then watch the movie "I Don't Feel At Home in the World Anymore" on Netflix. It has the same vibe to it.
Thanks so much !
The Night Of - an HBO miniseries.
Amazing!!
The killing! Is so much like the sinner. Great suggestion from the person above
The Killing is 1000x better
Seven Seconds - Netflix
The Missing on Amazon Prime, but only season 2 (it's an anthology so you can start anywhere). Incredible story, very complex with multiple timelines. The main detective has a lot of similarities to Bill Pullman's character. Super satisfying.
Season 1 has some good aspects but a terrible ending.
I love these kind of shows. The vibe of both is irreplaceable. I love the detectives, they are broken but not the depressive fallen kind like in “river” and the whole trauma mystery vibe. “The fall” is also a show I really loved!
true detective
Season One only…
Line of Duty
Season 3 of True detective was still good, nothing on the first though.
Unforgotten, if you haven't seen it yet. Seasons 1-3 are amazing.
I think you would love The Killing, and I also agree with Department Q. Also, have you watched Happy Valley? I watched that right after Broadchurch and loved it. If you don't mind subtitles, there is a great Icelandic show called Trapped (Netflix). It definitely fits the broken detective genre. I loved the male lead so much in that show and was so excited when I also saw him in Severance!
Yes! 'Happy Valley' and 'The Killing' 💯
Both are so good !
I loved the killing!! Thank you for the other recommendations!
The Fall w/ Jamie Dornan and Gillian Anderson
Chestnut man and Deadwind
I started watching Chestnut Man at night and had to turn it off. It's good.
Are there any other similar Tv Series lime Sinner plot. The plot is really interesting
True detective?
Will check it thanks
A lot of good stuff in Europe. La Treve (The Break), Trapped, Bordertown, The Valhalla Murders, Deadwind. All of these on Netflix.
Interesting list. Will check them out. Thanks 👍🏽
I would recommend sharp objects if you haven't seen it yet!
I just read that it's really good! I'll see it if I can!
Tabula Rasa (Belgium)
Interesting, will check it out
If you want something a bit more supernatural The Outsider is fantastic.
I really really loved the plot of Jamie surrounding the identity crisis he went though and the whole theme of questioning the purpose in life. Anybody got recommendations for shows that depict this feeling? Not necessarily detective-esque.
No shows come to mind but a few film suggestions if you don’t mind… The film American Beauty (1999). It’s a little dated but brilliantly written. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri (2017) The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Great recommendations.
And American Beauty will never be outdated. It will always be one of the best movies ever made.
Thank you!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Twin Peaks, Seasons 1 and 2.
The OA
Angel Heart (movie)
Pi (movie)
Dead Man (movie)
Lots of literature and philosophy. Ancient Greek Dramas; Dostoevsky; Camus, the existentialists... something more accessible? Herman Hesse (Damien and Steppenwolf in particular)
I really enjoyed season 3, I loved how they worked in real philosophy. It’s strange how most people hate this season, it’s always regarded as the worst.
The only show I can think of that’s actually similar is True Detective season 1, which is one of the best seasons of television ever made.
It’s strange how most people hate this season
Most def. It's levels above S1&2 in my opinion. Really moved me emotionally.
Thank you for your recommendation, I'll make sure to check it out.
Based on season 1 and 2, I think people had high expectations of the next story. The difference with the third one is that the whole season is based on the development of the main character. The story is almost, if not secondary.
The progression of Jamie is outstanding as much as it's played by an excellent actor. That with the philosophy aspect, once again supported by the main character, made the season 3 a very good and interesting show to watch. At least for me.
I loved this season too. I feel season 2 was my least favorite.
Kinda different, but I really enjoyed behind her eyes
I found The Sinner a few days ago so I'm just barely seeing this. I'm very surprised no one recommend the Hannibal tv series to you. S3 of The Sinner feels like a shitty knock off of it almost.
I’m in serious need of a new mystery/thriller/whodunnit show to binge. I’ve already watched (and loved) The Sinner, The Killing, True Detective, Mare of Easttown, Sharp Objects, The Fall, Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Marcella, Luther, and Shetland.
Looking for something with great writing, dark vibes, and a plot that actually keeps you guessing. Bonus points if it’s character-driven or has a slow burn. Preferably in English, but I’m open to international suggestions if they’re really worth it.
Thanks in advance for any recs!
Here are some offbeat recs that might interest you -- some tonal overlaps with my recs above:
We just watched Old Man, so upset it got canceled after two seasons and it really leaves you with no closure.
This is also one where the show is so much better than the book
Sugar is so old school, it feels like I'm watching kojak, but with smarter writing and better acting. Colin Farrell is incredible, as always. Great recommendation!
Glad to see Bodkin mentioned; came here to make sure it made the list!
I took a screen shot thanks for the recommendations!
Comedy mystery - Only Murders In The Building!
The Harlan Coben collection
Should I start newer and work my way back? I've only seen Safe and there are 11 looks like. What's your favorite or top 3?
Stay close, missing you, fool me once. Imo
I loved The Residence. Great murder mystery with good humour.
Agree! I thought it slowed down a bit in the middle but the ending banged things together very satisfyingly!
