Musical Theatre and Stage Acting
Many K-pop idols have successfully transitioned into musical theatre, leveraging their vocal talents and stage presence. Notable examples include Ock Ju Hyun from Fin.K.L and Junsu from ex-DBSK, who have become prominent figures in the Korean musical scene [1:3]
[1:4]. Musicals allow idols to showcase their singing, acting, and performing skills simultaneously, making it a natural progression for those with strong vocal abilities
[1:6]. However, stage acting requires different skills compared to screen acting, as it demands more emotional expression and stage command
[1:4].
Idols Balancing Music and Acting Careers
Some idols manage to maintain active careers in both music and acting. IU and Cha Eun Woo are prime examples of individuals who juggle both fields successfully [2:1]
[2:10]. Other idols like SHINee's Minho and 2PM's Junho and Taecyeon have also been able to alternate between music releases and acting roles
[2:4]. This dual career path allows idols to diversify their talents and reach broader audiences.
Challenges and Criticisms
Despite the success stories, there is criticism regarding idols transitioning to acting. Some argue that idols are cast in dramas primarily due to their popularity rather than their acting skills, leading to performances that lack depth [3:3]
[3:7]. However, when an idol proves to be a talented actor, it can significantly enhance their career and reputation
[3:2]. Examples of well-received idol actors include Park Hyung-sik, Im Si-wan, and Lee Jun-ho, who are praised for their ability to handle complex roles
[3:2]
[3:12].
Notable Idol Actors
Several idols have made a successful transition to acting, earning recognition for their performances. Im Si-wan, D.O (Do Kyung Soo), and Lee Jun-ho are often mentioned as top-tier idol actors [3:2]
[3:12]. These individuals have demonstrated versatility and skill, contributing to their success in both music and acting. Additionally, female idols like IU, BIBI, and Kim Sejeong have also been acknowledged for their impressive acting abilities
[3:8].
Overall, while the transition from idol to actor can be challenging, many have succeeded by leveraging their existing skills and expanding their repertoire. The key lies in honing acting abilities and choosing roles that align with their strengths.
There's been an uptrend in recent years of K-Pop idols participating in musicals. In 2022 alone there are sooo many idols performing in musicals. There is a list here.
Of course, there are some veteran idols in the musical industry already renowned for playing certain roles (e.g. INFINITE's SungKyu, former Lovelyz Kei, etc.) but there are more and more idols entering the scene these days.
For example, WonHo and some of the E'LAST members are new on the musical scene. Some of the ASTRO and SF9 members are also starting to make a name for themselves in musicals.
Super Junior's EunHyuk was even the first idol to direct his own musical (last year with Altar Boyz).
Do you enjoy finding out your idol is participating in a musical? What do you think about this industry becoming more and more open to idols?
Do you reckon that musicals allow idols to show a new side of themselves as artists? Are there any idols you'd like to see make a musical debut?
If the production thinks they are right for the role, why not! It's very music and performance adjacent anyway. Obviously, theatre acting/singing is different, but at least idols already have some skills in singing and handling the stage.
Good for them if they get opportunities.
plus they probably also learn better techniques. some idols have good vocals to get into the theater door, then become even better and more stable after being in musicals
I bet! One cannot rely on lip sync or backing tracks in theater. 😅
Some idols like Ock Ju Hyun (Fin KL) and Junsu (ex-DBSK) became huge names in musicals and many idols have been involved in musicals since long time ago.
And musicals will showcase their singing, acting and performing talents in one, so ofc it's a good thing
Haven't watched any Korean musicals, hopefully one day
Ock Ju Hyun is one of the most sought after musical theatre actresses in South Korea, which I think is super cool! If you haven't heard it, you should check out her performance of this song from the musical The Count of Monte Cristo. The emotions are so easy to hear in her voice, it gives me chills almost every time I hear it.
Wow that clip was so good, she was clearly longing for something.
What a beautiful voice.
I was surprised by how good the onscreen acting of some musical actors is, particularly when compared to full time TV actors.
E.g. Kang Hong-seok, Jo Jung-suk, Shin Sung Rok, Jeon Mi Do, Lee Kyu Hyung (best crier ever omg. Him in Hi Bye Mama, and Lee Joon Gi in Flower of Evil).
Makes me wonder why Junsu hasn't branched into TV or film a little, as it would definitely give him more exposure. It can't just be because of SM, since Yoochun got to appear in a few dramas that did alright.
I'm curious whether Junsu would make a better actor than him - I used to enjoy his acting the most out of the TVXQ members, but then he went and ruined his own career by himself.
Stage acting is a lot different than screen acting. It's been a long time since I followed Junsu's activities but he was my bias for many years, and he was not a good screen actor at all back then. I watched him in the original run of Elisabeth ten years ago and personally I think his strengths were how much emotion he imbued into his singing and how he commanded the stage when he was on it. These aren't really things that would lend well to television acting career. He did really well in sticking to musicals, imo, and it's crazy to see how much of a respected name he is now because he used to get a ton of hate just for being an idol.
The Idol life doesn't last forever so I think it's like anything else in entertainment- it's great that they get the experience and have an opportunity to try something new or gain more experience.
Makes total sense in my head, plus it promotes musicals so win-win.
My main thought is how angry I am because I am not able to go watch it live, but it do be like that sometimes. Most times. 😔
But there is some BTS content on Youtube - Solar for example. And seeing straight from her just how much work goes into it, the prep, the nerves before going on stage despite having years of experience, the emotion afterwards when everyone feels super proud about her and Byul gives her a massive bouquet of flowers... just heartwarming. This is a trend I hope stays and gets stronger!
Byul’s 100 red roses 🥹 and the crying after the show, so wholesome!
If they have the voice & the acting chops for it, why not? I love a good musical & would love to see some of these idols in action, especially Daehyun, Inseong & Leo.
are there any idols who regularly act and release music bc most of the idol-actors i’ve seen only release music or act every once in a while, while mainly focusing on the other career. the only ones that have active careers in both that come to my mind right now are iu and eunwoo
(sorry if this doesn’t make sense english isn’t my first language)
btob's sungjae was in like every drama at one point I swear and also was in btob releasing music /doing performances at the same time
lowkey maybe jinyoung pre got7 leaving jyp (drop that album now my dude please)
I was on the fence about mentioning Sungjae.
Coz he did balance regular acting & music releases until Goblin (end 2016). But he took a long-ish break from acting to focus on BtoB activities & his next drama was in 2020 (Mystic Pop up bar).
Then he enlisted, so we'll need to see how active he will be in both fields in 2022. He does have a drama (Golden Spoon) planned & there's a BtoB album currently in the works though.
In fact, the BtoB member with more acting roles in the past 5 years is probably Minhyuk. He does more web dramas & supporting roles, which is why many might not be aware of them
SHINee Minho.
He's been constantly acting and, at the same time, releasing music. This year he actually has been alternating between music and acting jobs.
I also forgot to mention 2PM's Junho and Taecyon. They had a comeback earlier this year after Taecyon's role in Vincenzo. Rn both are acting in dramas with high ratings
I’d also add 2PM’s maknae Chansung! He doesn’t get lead roles like the other two, but he gets steady work.
Also Key had quite a few acting roles before his enlistment mainly in musicals a few dramas and a movie, he’s also brought out 2 solos and multiple singles and it looks like that’s possibly gonna become somewhat of a regular yearly/ bi yearly thing
Onew too, now that I think about it. He's been acting in musicals and dramas (Descendants of the sun, for example)
SF9 in general. Not just Rowoon, but multiple members are in web dramas or supporting roles in tv dramas afaik.
Don't forget they also do musical theatre.
I thought OP was only asking about acting in dramas/movies... Otherwise, there's a whole bunch of idols I could suggest who juggle musicals & idol work
i think sf9 is the only group with all members that are active in both fields? can't recall currently if there are any other groups with all members that are active in both acting and music
Not currently, but there was a period where at least half of SNSD was going between promoting their latest hit and filming dramas.
D.O . Movies, solo music, EXO.
Spicy One: Let’s be honest—some idol-turned-actors get roles just because of their fandoms, not their talent. It's frustrating when dramas cast idols with zero acting range just to boost viewership. Not everyone needs to act, and it shows when their performance feels like an MV with extra lines. K-dramas deserve better than blank stares and robotic delivery in lead roles just because someone's pretty and famous.
Sweet One: But when an idol turns out to be a legit actor? That glow-up hits different. Watching someone go from cute variety show guest to genuinely moving you with their acting is such a rewarding experience as a fan. Like, seeing D.O. in My Annoying Brother or Rowoon in Extraordinary You ( His acting can be subjective) it’s like watching your little brother grow up and win an Oscar in your living room. You feel proud even if you’ve never met them.
Park Hyung-sik, Lee Jun-ho, and Im Si-wan are S-tier when it comes to idol-actors. They can handle wide range of emotions and nail complex roles. Lee Jun-young (U-KISS) is almost there too.
The rest kind of stick to their comfort zones or are getting typecast by the creators.
They are the only 3 I recognize from the list (I'm more of a k-drama girlie, zero k-pop knowledge) and I agree! I'd also add Rowon in certain dramas. He not always hits the mark, but sometimes he does!
Love Im Si Wan in Strangers from Hell.
Kinda true like park hyung sik and im si wan are damn good actors i am still like what whenever i hear they are idols turned actors and for the guy wolf in weak hero(dont remember his name) He is damn good actor he made me creeped out and he is a good actor tbh Played all villain roles well Bur tangerine show really gave him the boost his image of "villain" was kinda removed after that drama
lee jun young is crazy versatile. acting is definitely his true calling.
Add Do Kyung Soo (D.O) to the S-tier list. Like someone said before in one Reddit comment, come & see the award season. Yim Shiwan, D.O & Lee Junho are regulars.
I would like to add Kim Sejeong
I think most of idols are average or even below average when it comes to acting . Of course some of them are really talented ( Im Siwan for example)
As an avid kdrama watcher I can say that Korea has a lot of very talented actors, some of them sadly stuck in small roles . So for me it’s kinda frustrating when idols who are less talented get important roles in kdramas only because of their company’s connections. Also I really hate when fans push their idols into acting only because they “look like actors “ I feel like this kind of mentality reduces the effort that professional actors have to put into their craft .
But as long as the performance is good I don’t care if it’s an idol . My fave performances by an idol is Im Siwan in Strangers from Hell , Park Jihoon in Weak hero ,Lee Jun young also in Weak hero ,N in Children of nobody . D.O in Hello monster
Honaray mention of park hyung sik and female idols like bibi iu and kim sejong( i dont know other maybe there are other) It is kinda frustrating cuz the thing is they look good but if they jave bad acting skills it ruins the experience shows will work wont they? 😂 idols have fanbase they will be their to see their oppa even they can act well i dont hate them just that either they improve their acting skills or give them not so prominent roles
I watched him in "Island Part 1" and then tried a couple more of his shows: "Gangnam Beauty" and "Good Day to be a Dog." - I didn't make it far in either one.
I also watched a bunch of videos on YouTube (interviews, clips with his Kpop group, etc.), that's where I drew the conclusion that he was a sweetheart, but the acting wasn't for me.
Bibi iu and kim sejong all three amazing actress and idols heard most of their popular songs all three have crazy vocals and are focused both on albums and dramas totally my role models🫶🏻
Junho was such a surprise. I did know a bit about him from 2pm. I was so surprised to see him act so well.
Spicy: Cha Eun Woo cannot act very well. But he's so sweet that I don't begrudge him his success.
Sweet: I am very much a fan of Park Hyun-Sik's acting in Buried Hearts, Jun-ho's in King the Land (even if the show itself wasn't my fave, trying to work up the courage to watch Red Sleeve). Im Si-Wan, BIBI, IU, T.O.P., Lee Jun-young are all 🔥🔥🔥
Edited to Add: 'very well', and sweet category because without it, alot of people got triggered, and I wasn't trying to upset people. Yet, the premise of the original post was to share such opinions.🥴
Check out these Korean actors and how they’ve changed from their early drama/movie days to now! Who has the biggest glow-up?
he dated kim sae ron when she was 15, then blackmailed her, then she committed suicide
Can we please normalize not downvoting people who are just asking questions? I don't see how this person is doing something wrong by inquiring about the situation. Not everyone is up to date with everything related to the industry. You should downvote people who are actually defending Kim Soo Hyun or being weird about it, smh
fuck kim soo hyun
Would’ve been best to leave Kim soo hyun out of this somewhat wholesome post 🫠
Song Joong Ki too. Replace them with Hyun Bin and Park Taecyeon.
Oh please what kind of objection is this they both did amazing job as actors you are no one to judge them on their personal life appreciate their work as you only know them as hell actors getting it how could you make theories even don't know what the actual fact is their personal life is hell private you don't no a single thing about it so leave them alone and watch them as actors if you want and if you don't want leave but who are you to judge them like you are perfect 😒 these critics are just crazy they lead them to death and then starts sympathy ahh I am sick of these netizen 😓let these guys live 🙏🏻
Getting divorced is not a crime, treating him the same as someone who groomed a child is wild.
What did 송중기 do?
This posts convinces me that Gong Yoo is immortal. In 17 years he looks the same!
He is living his Goblin character 😂😍
Girl don't ruin my day with kdiddy's pic😭

To make the title easier to understand, there are K-POP idols who are members of a group and also have a career in acting and there would be one or more who has such amazing vocals and you would be afraid if that group disbands and/or that members leaves the group and goes into acting because you won't be able to listen to his/her vocals again.
I have a r/kpopthoughts post on this topic as this was a thought I had in mind. I actually have one K-POP idol group actress member like that.
DIA Jung Chaeyeon is the one K-POP idol group actress member. Her vocals are so good and I would be afraid that I would not hear them again once she goes into acting. This is actually one of the reasons why I don't want DIA to disband, fun fact. Now, I'm asking you. Is there any K-POP idol group actor/actress member whose vocals you love so much and are afraid to not hear again after said group disbands or the member leaves the group and focuses on acting careers?
Got7 Jinyoung! I love his voice. Probably my favorite voice in kpop. But now he is an full time actor so the only time we could listen to him sing is in Got7 tracks
He’s not only a full time actor! He still wants to sing so you can expect to hear more songs from him in the future ☺️
RV Joy has been pushed more as an actress and model and I'm scared if they don't renew that she'll never do music again
EXO's Chen. I honestly hope the fans and the public will be more accepting towards him when he is discharged from military. His vocals is amazing. I can't even describe.
Pretty sure they will be, as much as they “hate” him his osts always chart high in Korea
+1!! Chen was also the first person that came to mind. Every time I watch their encore, its his voice that stands out the most. His voice live sounds exactly like the recorded one, vvv stable!! I really hope people see more how talented he is:(
I know! His voice is so distinctive and stable. Really love his ad libs as well. It really breaks my heart to see the amount of hate he has been getting. :(
His voice is how heaven sounds like
EXO's D.O. He's already well on his way to full time acting so let's just hope he does musicals.
Cmiiw but isn't DO releasing an album?
His idol contract is still going, if he doesn't renew with SM next year it could be his last.
Immediately thought of jinyoung. Gosh that mans voice is beautiful
edit: GOT7
Even though there are idols like Yoona, IU, Krystal or Taecyeon who are great at acting, not every idol can be an actor or actress? Who had you cringing in their acting role?
This not meant to hate on idols, in the end of the day it's just our opinions.
Those you named weren't great from the beginning LOL. Yoona used to be ripped for every project she did because she was literally bad (The K2 for example). IU and Tacyeon were never bad, but they were below average starting out (in the iconic Dream High ofc) who had improve to where they are now (and honestly, Tacyeon is still lacking as a lead).
As for people who had some memorable bad acting performances
Joy: I'm sorry, but yikes. When I tried to watch The Great Seducer, it was just a mess seeing Moon Ga Young, Woo Do-Hwan, and Kim Min-Jae act circles around her. I haven't watched (and prob won't) The One and Only, but I haven't heard of any improvements from her (outside of the typical RV fans hyping her up), so idk.
Cha Eun Woo: honestly, he was pretty good in the one smaller role he had at the beginning of his career in The Best Hit, but his level of acting right now is simply not leading level, but he keep getting those roles because he's very handsome. He's not like terribly bad in any role I'd say, but even at his best he's barely average. Him being typecast doesn't help either.
Son Na Eun: I was one of the few unfortunate people who tried to watch Cinderella and the Four Knights, because Park So Dam so rarely does drama, and besides the god-awful plot, Naeun was just terrible in that drama. She was literally the definition of a moving flower vase, showing 0 emotions in any sort of scenes. On the bright side, I've heard she's better in the new Ghost Doctor, though idk how much better (if I ever find time from studying in med school, I'll watch it to judge for myself lmao).
Suzy: look, I love Suzy. She's one of my favorite actress/idol solely for her role in Dream High, but even to this day, girl is barely average. And if we go back to the dramas from her beginning days? Let's just say there was a reason she was one of the foremost face of people hate against idols getting lead roles in dramas right off the bat.
Seolhyun: specifcally in Orange Marmalade omg. Was the plot shit? Yes. Was she also terrible at acting? Yes. She has improved a lot though, at least from what I saw in her more recent role in My Country with Jang Hyuk. She didn't look bad next to Jang Hyuk (who is a fucking god in acting), and that's a far cry from Orange Marmalade.
Disclaimer before anyone launch into a tirade: I don't have anything against anyone I listed. All my comments are solely based on their acting performances, in some cases acting performances in specific dramas that I named.
Great picks. But yeah Naeun was just unbearable.
Honestly, I love idol Suzy, but actress Suzy is just meh. Sorry. The last drama of hers I checked out was While You Were Sleeping and only because I had faith in Lee Jongsuk.
I thought she was terrible in Big, and bad in Incredibly fond. But she's much better in Start-up.
I literally don't understand why so many idols go straight into leading or second lead roles for their first acting gig, rather than building their way up.
Honestly depends on the popularity of the group and size of the company. These are a few examples off the top of my head - no hate to anyone, just analysing their career.
Hyeri started from a side character in a daily drama and played supporting roles after before her popularity shot up and she landed Reply 1988 because she is literally the same person as Deok Sun. It was definitely not her company who got the role for her. That pretty much cemented her as a lead. From her group though, you have Yura who was as popular back then as Hyeri (pre-88) but has never played the lead role. A big part of that is their former company not being great at marketing their idols and the fact that to get a lead role you need a breakthrough which she never got. So for smaller companies, a lot of it is opportunities.
Suzy on the other hand was from JYP who produced Dream High - which was kind of silly but a decent start - with her in the lead and was maybe involved in her film debut Architecture 101 that was a huge success? So she started on lead roles fairly early. Her beauty and the fact that she is a palatable actress (weird comparison but Suzy feels like silken tofu to me) pretty much pushed her to the top. I think she has very good script sense and a fairly neutral character that can transfer to a lot of situations.
Jisoo stared in Snowdrop which was actually a huge drama on paper - stellar cast and revered writer in a setting that grabs eyeballs. It went off kilter but you cannot deny that her being Jisoo of BlackPink probably got her the role a lot more easily. I haven’t seen it but her landing the role itself says a lot.
Two factors: 1. Idols can draw huge numbers; and 2. Their company negotiated for it. There's a really good argument that idols who wanted to get into acting should audition for roles or "work their way up", but the industry is hardly ever fair.
Ghost doctor is a good drama. Na eun is alright but she doesn't have that much screen time so I don't think it matters that much if she is bad. So arguably hasn't improved that much.
Taecyeon had a rough start in acting. Yunho, too. The cringe in Heading to the Ground is something I never want to experience ever again. Changmin didn’t do well in Paradish Ranch either. The cringe on that one, too. Thankfully both of them have stopped pursuing acting roles.
Joy in tempted. I’m sorry but I heard she’s improved in her new drama but I really can’t with her acting in that show
Kai (though he is my bias since 2012) but he is not a good actor sorry
I only like taecyeon's acting in vincenzo he was fine in bring it in ghost,, i don't like his acting in dream high or secret inspector joy😬😬
Son naeun :- I love naeun and Apink sm but girl can't act😭😭
This might seem a bit weird but I really just wanna see if I can find kpop groups where almost all the members have acting experience. They don't have to be main roles, they can be supporting roles BUT no cameos as they have to atleast have something to add to the acting medium.
It might be a bit hard to find kpop groups where all the members act so maybe groups with almost all the members who act? Maybe 2 members at maximum who don't act.
They can be in dramas, movies, webdramas, musical theater, theater, or just any acting mediums.
I already know about 5urprise but they're not really a kpop group, they're actors who also sings.
Thanks in advance lol.
Exo
D.o. Has done movies and dramas. Chanyeol did movies. Xiumin, suho, baekhyun all did musicals. Baekhyun also did drama. Lay did multiple dramas. Tao and luhan as well. Sehun also did movies. I think kai and Chen haven't done any serious acting.
Oh wow, I didn't know D.O and Chanyeol is in Exo. Good to know that other members has been acting. Also, I think I've seen Kai in a web drama that involves chocolate.
Adding to this:
D.O. and Xiumin played in a military musical during their services. Other than that, D.O. is well known as actor. Xiumin is starring on Hadestown musical.
Baekhyun did Singing in the Rain musical as well.
Chen did a musical: In the Height.
Suho did several drama series (How are You Bread, Star of My Universe, Richman) and webmovie the Present.
Sehun has upcoming drama Now We are Breaking Up (airs on Nov 2021) and movie the Pirates 2 (airs on Lunar New Year 2022).
Chanyeol is the main star of a military musical, Song for Meissa.
Kai’s done drama acting and Chen’s acted in musicals. 9/9 members are ace actors 😊😊
Apink- Eunji and Naeun have had the most roles, but Chorong, Bomi, Namjoo, and Hayoung have all had roles in web & tv series, tv shows, and dramas.
I’m surprised CNBLUE was not mentioned yet. 3/3 had lead roles.
Yesss, and in pretty popular dramas too. Among all of the members' acting credits, I think these are the most popular:
Two members have also performed in musicals (if that interests you):
Astro - all members featured in two webdramas that set the group in a fantasy setting: To Be Continued and Soul Plate. Aside from that, 5/6 members (Jinjin is the only exception) have also been casted as lead roles in (non-Astro) dramas or musical theater at least once.
Edit: The members' lead roles:
Moonbin was a child actor I think ? And he's better at acting than Eunwoo for sure.
I really liked him in Moment At Eighteen (very solid cast, sub-par writing).
Generally speaking Fantagio has a lot of idols who also act because they're first and foremost an acting agency.
Only Eunwoo had a recurring role, the rest only appeared for a couple cameos.
Didn't know that! I only saw him in 7 first kisses ...but I didn't really count that since his part was only like 10 min lol and it doesn't really amount to a full drama
I only know two of the members act. It's nice to know that others do act too
This post is prompted by lays new chinese drama that's airing right now and all I can say is this man cannot act if his life depends on it. I also have to say I'm an exo fan and have really loved and supported lays music works and personality but now I'm actually losing my admiration/ respect for him.
It's really common for idols to cross fields and want to give acting a try, it's additional money, it's guaranteed audience for the drama etc. And I do think some idols actually do have pretty good talent. At least when you watch their dramas it's not painful. IU, kyungsoo, jinyoung, ok taecyon (and others) have all demonstrated that they can act and with every drama you can tell their skills are improving, some are even on par with actors who graduated from acting school.
But there are idols who have proven they just don't have the talent or ability to improve. And with their addition, it really just ruins the entire drama even if other actors are amazing and the script is good. I think these idols should really have some self awareness and go back to making music and stop acting. A great important role just wasted on someone who can't act when therr are hundreds of other trained young actors who deserve this role and opportunity. It takes months to film a drama and its just not fair to the audience and other actors to let these idols take these roles even when they can't act. Do they not see that they're not made for acting?
And then there's some idols like Jaehyun who are cursed when it comes to acting/dramas 😭
This is less on the idol themselves and more on the casting directors for casting idols for their looks rather than their acting skill. Very few idols voluntarily attend an acting audition and most of the time are just casted because they “look the part”
And what are the companies going to do if someone wants their idol in a movie/drama; say no?
Also, idk whether you wrote this post in good faith or not but this is just going to end up with certain idols getting dragged for their acting among other things
> And what are the companies going to do if someone wants their idol in a movie/drama; say no?
interestingly JYPE said no to Junho he told them he wanted to audition for a movie
I think that’s more common - companies are definitely more likely say no to the idol wanting to audition for a part than to a casting director specifically wanting their idol in their project
SM is another one that kinda stops (newer) idols from auditioning but is happy for them to be casted
his first drama dear.m got cancelled because of the bullying scandal with park hyesoo (the female lead) and his next drama got cancelled because of creative differences w the original writer (it was based on a novel or a movie and the original plot was quite problematic)
Casting directors should be the ones identifying bad actors and not casting idols in the role if they’re really that terrible at acting. I don’t see how this all comes down to the idol having “self awareness” and letting inexperienced but trained actors have a chance when the casting director should be doing that
How would they even have awareness of their acting skill anyway if they’re constantly being casted to act by well known directors? Any comments online would be negated by the fact they’re constantly being casted for acting roles
Pretty much this - if it gets butts in seats (or eyes on the screen), then that's good casting.
Honestly, this is why some idols get casted in musicals and tv shows to begin with.
eunwoo's role as MJ in "the best hit" (2017) was also a less serious character !
I might get heat for this but this should be applied to eunwoo(astro) as well, he really can't act that well. Its not as bad as lays is acting but its still not that great. So I totally agree with u. The only person who has improved with time in acting is probably jinyoung(got 7) and iu, but even jinyoung needs to improve more. I saw people give some heat for jisoo is acting but damn for person who acted for the first time she was good as hell compared to all the above.
nct’s jaehyun
>idols themselves can say no too.
If you’re offered a good work opportunity, it would be silly to turn it down. Most people at one point or other in their adult life will accept a job offer that they feel (and may actually be) underqualified for and just learn on the job and/or do the best they currently can. If a company wants you and thinks you can do the job, you’re not noble or brave for turning a good offer down to “protect” the company and their clients from yourself, you’re just screwing yourself out of a well-paying job and probably have a not-insignificant case of impostor syndrome.
This is true for everyone and that goes for idols and actors as well. Criticizing their skills is absolutely fair, but actually expecting them to turn down good career opportunities is just not how real life works. It’s more realistic to direct frustration with casting decisions at casting directors.
It's only in the recent years that Lee Minki's been playing similar characters though! His roles have been pretty diverse before.
K-pop idols who transitioned to acting
