TL;DR There are no specific mentions of upcoming K-dramas featuring idols in the discussions provided. However, Netflix's "Mantis" features notable actors and could be of interest.
Netflix’s “Mantis” Spin-off
"Mantis," a spin-off from the film "Kill Boksoon," is an action-packed movie that includes Yim Si Wan, Park Gyu Young, and Jo Woo Jin in its cast [5]. While not explicitly mentioned as featuring idols, Yim Si Wan is a well-known actor and singer who was part of the boy band ZE:A, making this project potentially interesting for those looking for idol involvement in dramas. The film centers around top-tier assassins competing for supremacy in a chaotic hitman industry
[5:5].
General Recommendations
While the query specifically asks about upcoming dramas featuring idols, the discussions primarily focus on iconic K-dramas and recommendations for someone new to the genre. Titles like "Goblin," "Coffee Prince," and "Hotel Del Luna" are considered classics and feature strong performances, although they may not necessarily star idols [1:1]
[1:3]. For more recent dramas, "Alchemy of Souls" and "Mr. Sunshine" were suggested as must-watch series
[1:7].
Exploring Idol Involvement
For those interested in idol participation in dramas, it's often beneficial to check platforms like MyDramaList or follow entertainment news outlets that announce casting updates. Idols frequently transition into acting roles, and announcements are made regularly regarding their participation in upcoming projects. Additionally, keeping an eye on social media channels of popular idols can provide insights into their latest endeavors in the drama industry.
I am looking to get into more kdramas and I would be interested in watching kdramas that are considered a must watch and iconic. Even if they have aged poorly I would wanna give them a try. Any genre works but especially ones that have some romance.
So far I’ve seen squid game, crash landing on you and moving.
ETA: Of course, I forgot a couple. I KNEW I was going to, but then when I thought of these I was like, "How could I have possibly . . ." So I had to come back so I wouldn't just be kicking myself about it for hours. Also I wanted to note to me for something being canonical means it stands the test of time, so I have given more weight to dramas that are more than 5 years old. I considered Lovely Runner, Twinkling Watermelon, and Happiness, but left them out because I'm not fully sure how much is still recency bias.
Since you are more interested in their place in the canon than their quality, here are ones I think fit your ask arranged chronologically and why I've included them, even if I didn't personally enjoy/watch all of them.
Winter Sonata -- the oldest drama is see regularly referenced in other dramas.
My Lovely Samsoon -- The feels like the original "chaebol jerk fake dating" template. It's also aged better than most of the early 2000s I've seen.
Boys over Flowers -- No matter what you think of the actual drama (it's terrible!), no other dramas comes CLOSE to being this referenced among other dramas.
Secret Garden -- This is another I really, really can't stand, but I have to admit 15 years later people are still talking about it (for some reason).
The Slave Hunters -- This was a HUGE cultural phenomenon. So much so that Crash Landing on You uses it as a reference point. It's more forgotten now than the others on this list, but personally I think it holds up better than the ones that are still more discussed. I can see why over 1/3rd of the Korean population tuned in for the finale.
Empress Ki -- Absolutely beloved long-form sageuk that people still rave about.
It's Okay, That's Love -- The drama most recommended to prove that "older" dramas can still be excellent. It's also a great look at what romance dramas looked like before the rom-com formula got codified.
Healer -- The most talked about pre-2015 romance. Has a sterling reputation that's very impressive considering how old it is.
Reply 1988 -- A quite slice-of-life coming-of-age drama that is more about the feel than the plot.
Kill Me, Heal Me -- This is another drama that you see talked about a lot in other dramas, especially in the 5 years after it aired. Very unique premise.
Signal -- Like one of those American series that gets a sequel 10 years later because people can't let go. One of the most iconic thrillers.
Goblin -- This is still a widely beloved drama. The absolute most canonical take on "human female falls in love with male supernatural creature."
Moon Lovers: Scarlet Hearts -- The people who love this one love it to the point they created a campaign to bring in back to US streaming. Perhaps a more vocal passionate fan base any other this old.
Descendants of the Sun -- Another ratings juggernaut that people were swooning over. It has been described as "Crash Landing on You before CLOY" as an entry drama.
What's Wrong with Secretary Kim -- Iconic workplace drama with Park Min Young proving herself the queen of the rom-com.
My Father Is Strange -- While you'll hear people talk less about weekend dramas, they are a key part of the drama format. No weekend drama is more discussed or beloved.
My Mister -- If K-dramas have an equivalent of The Wire, this is it. Even if people don't love it, they respect and almost always own up to its quality.
Welcome to Waikiki (s1) -- The most talked about straight comedy. Even if you haven't seen it, drama lovers know what you mean when you say, "Gwencha, gwencha."
Her Private Life -- PMY's follow-up that now has a bigger reputation than WWWSK.
Mr. Queen -- The sageuk that non-sageuk lovers adore. Most people agree the comedy is peak.
Flower of Evil -- THE romantic thriller everyone gushes over like no other.
The Netflix effect is real. More Netflix dramas will just generally be discussed than any others since it's the only English-language streaming service that suggests K-dramas to people who've never watched them, so I feel like dramas you can only access via Netflix are their own category. Instead of giving a breakdown of these, here are just the Netflix ones that seem to be standing the test of time and probably should be considered canonical IMO: 25 21, Alchemy of Souls, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, The Glory, Vincenzo, Hospital Playlist, Mr. Sunshine, Business Proposal I'm tempted to add When Life Gives You Tangerines, but since it only came out earlier this year, I think it's a bit too early to tell how central it will be 5+ years from now.
Oh boy this is a long list haha I’m going to see what I can find on netflix first and then see where I can find the others. Thanks so much! Great list
I thought of this as an exercise in, "If I were writing the K-drama canon, what do I think belongs in it," rather than a list of recommendations. I had a lot of fun putting it together!
Personally, as someone who spent their 20s reading my way through the Western canon of literature, I think history is important to understand but also canonical doesn't mean something is good or that it will be to your tastes. So I do not really recommend starting with the most popular dramas. It's better to figure out what appeals to you and then seek dramas with those qualities. But I also can understand the desire to be part of "the conversation" as quickly as possible.
You’ve received lots of great suggestions and I would add Coffee Prince to your list. A quirky mistaken-identity romance between a café owner and one of his employees, it’s a classic from 2007 but it was way ahead of its time and continues to gain new fans even today.
OMG! I forgot Coffee Prince! Definitely, definitely Coffee Prince belongs in the K-drama canon!

More on the roster announcement, including a link to the team's original draft: https://extrainningsbaseball.wordpress.com/2025/09/05/mid-east-falcons-2025-roster/ .
Monkey never cramp
Looks like a lot of changes from last year's "draft". No Pablo Sandoval, Alex Liddi, Rusney Castillo, Dillon Thomas, among others
“Mantis” is an action film that centers on Mantis (Yim Si Wan), a top-tier assassin who returns to the hitman industry after a long vacation—only to find it in complete chaos. As he reenters this anarchic environment, Mantis encounters Jae Yi (Park Gyu Young), his fellow trainee and rival, and Dok Go (Jo Woo Jin), a retired legendary killer, and discovers that they are all competing for the No. 1 spot among the killers.
Director Lee Tae Sung commented on the cast, “I thought the combination of Yim Si Wan, Park Gyu Young, and Jo Woo Jin was the perfect mix. It was a casting as lucky as fate.”
That cast is fab.
That was a great fun and stylish movie. Looking forward to this.
Nice, Kill Boksoon is an amazing movie, can't wait for this one
Hi guys! Can you recommend a drama that circulates within the idol world? You know like Shooting Stars, Contract in Love, or True Beauty. I've always wanted to see like the behind the scenes world of these actors/idols.
Was hoping they would be more on the romantic comedy side and not more on drama. I need something light, I'm still getting over Lovely Runner lol
How about variety shows or documentaries? Those might be closer to real life behind the scenes.
Other possibly related dramas that are not yet mentioned above: The Producers (IU is there and she stars as a star), Her Private Life (ML's long lost brother has an idol group), and Run On (second FL's brother is an idol).
Former member of UKISS, Lee Jun-young, has starred as the lead actor in two idol themed TV shows.
Imitation (2021)
The story follows a secret romance between a member of a rookie girl group and a member of a top boy group. An idol also goes missing during a concert.
This show stars many real idols, including: Jiyeon (T-ara), Yunho (ATEEZ), Jongho (ATEEZ), San (ATEEZ), Danny Ahn (g.o.d), Chani (SF9), Hwiyoung (SF9), Nayoung (Pristin), Suwoong (Boys Republic).
Let Me Be Your Knight (2021/2022)
This series follows the lead singer of a popular idol band, who suffers from sleepwalking. To cure his condition secretly, he seeks help from a doctor to cure his condition.
Also stars idols: JR (NU'EST), Donghyun (AB6IX).
^ yes to both of these
Lee Jun Young is fantastic in both and they offer a more realistic look into the idol world (the benefits and challenges of fame)
In Her Private Life, the FL is a curator who also runs a fan page for her favorite K-pop idol played by real-life singer-rapper One. It’s a very entertaining rom-com about her relationship with her new boss. They don’t get along at first but their chemistry is through the roof and once they start falling for each other, they have one of the healthiest relationships I’ve ever seen in a K-drama.
The drama’s primarily focused on the main couple’s romance but we also get a glimpse into fan culture and some of the challenges of being an idol.
So I Married an Antifan was pretty fun.
I liked that one too. 😊 And even though she's not the idol in it, Choi Soo-Young is an actual idol.
These are all entertainment based dramas that I have watched or are on my watch-list, some may fit what you're looking for. Please excuse the bad descriptions:

The only one I can think of is Doona but it’s a college romance. Still very good though and has a more darker tone about what an idol goes through.

Hi, I'm more of a seasoned K-pop fan (listening to the genre since 2014), but I slowly started to get more into Kdramas after the release of The Glory. However, I think the thing that makes a lot of people enjoy (or hate) Kdramas and Kpop is the community surrounding them, and I was just wondering if K-actors are held to the same impossible standards that K-pop idols are when it comes to their personal lives.
Like, do Kdrama fans really care if their favorite actor gets into a relationship or not? For some K-pop idols it sometimes feels like a career killing incident. I feel like dating announcements are a little more normalized in the acting industry, but again, I'm not really in this sphere so I was wondering what your opinion on it is.
imo the "rules" have been pretty lax for actors. for example, the whole discourse regarding the squid game cast when it was revealed. the comparison between the news regarding top's weed scandal when there are multiple actors in that cast with previous sexual misconduct cases / charges.
the pipeline for actors are commonly: scandal -> drop out of current projects -> cancelled cfs (if any) -> lay low for 1 to 2 years -> optional comeback project (overseas) -> comeback project (korea)
but for idols, once they are kicked out of their group, they really have no where to get back into the industry, like what you mentioned. unless they have already established themselves in variety or acting, which is more uncommon
for dating scandals specifically, theres a couple of factors. firstly, actors rarely market themselves as parasocial targets compared to idols. for a long time, they rarely appeared on variety shows so were much more private / mysterious to the public. second, the other party. if the other party is also an idol, thats 2 fanbases to address 😅 third, career lifespan and hiatus. its more common for idols to be constantly in the public eye, compared to actors who may have hiatuses in between projects.
I think only if there is some issues surrounding them. I remember Lee Jinwook, Ryu Junyeol, Han Sohee, Seo Yeaji, Lee Byunghun and others having some scandals. But what I noticed is people are more lenient and forgiving on male actors than the female ones. Maybe because Korea is a patriarchal country and always have a double standards for females.
Actors only get backlash for dating if it's problematic, (Park Min Young and that weird CEO guy), or they may get backlash if they're dating an idol (Lee Jae Wook and Karina).
For the most part people are happy for the actors then move on quite quickly.
Not really because i'm pretty sure actors are allowed to date and their fans are used to seeing them with the opposite gender on screen
i feel like its a liiiiiitle more lenient for a couple of reasons. first of all, i don’t think there are dating rules in contracts like there are in the kpop industry. also, there’s less press following them around constantly and i do believe there are less saesang fans. nonetheless, there are still dating rumors, paparazzi, and saesang. like is it less? yes. but is it there? also yes. especially for popular actors (+ ones who may have been idols!), it is pretty much the same. if cha eunwoo had a dating scandal - all hell would break loose. ofc he and others have saesang fans too. to give an example of someone who is not also an idol, i know that gong yoo (squid game, train to busan, the trunk, etc) has had lots of issues with fans infringing upon his privacy + dating rumors. so yeah, it’s similar.
