What Redditors are Saying

Successful Idol Actors in K-Dramas

TL;DR Some of the most successful idol actors include IU, Lee Junho, Cha Eunwoo, Park Hyungsik, and D.O. from EXO.

Notable Successful Idol Actors

Several idol actors have made significant strides in the K-drama industry. IU, originally a solo singer, has been praised for her acting skills alongside her music career [1:2][5:5]. Lee Junho from 2PM is another example of an idol who has successfully transitioned into acting [5]. Other notable mentions include Cha Eunwoo from Astro, who has become a household name due to his acting roles [2:2], and D.O. from EXO, who has received acclaim for his performances [1:2].

Idols with Dual Careers

Many idols continue their music careers while acting in dramas. For instance, Minho from SHINee, Joy from Red Velvet, and Jinyoung from GOT7 are actively involved in both industries [2:1][2:3]. This dual career path allows them to leverage their popularity from music to gain roles in dramas, often leading to successful acting careers.

Talent Versus Popularity

While some idol actors are cast primarily due to their popularity, others have proven their talent through compelling performances. Im Siwan from ZE:A is often cited as one of the best idol actors due to his exceptional talent [5:5]. Similarly, Park Jihoon, initially a child actor before becoming an idol, has impressed audiences with his acting skills [5:3].

Challenges and Community Standards

The standards and scrutiny faced by idol actors can be intense, similar to those in the K-pop industry. While actors may face backlash for personal scandals or dating rumors, they generally experience more leniency compared to idols [4:1][4:2]. Nonetheless, popular idol actors like Cha Eunwoo would likely face significant public attention if involved in any controversies [4:1].

In conclusion, the transition from idol to actor can be successful, with many idols achieving recognition and acclaim in K-dramas. Their ability to balance both careers often depends on their talent, popularity, and how well they navigate the industry's challenges.

TOP's not "being" cancelled. He "was" cancelled. For smoking weed like what... 2 times? In an incident that happened close to 10 years ago. Squid Games is his return to form. He's doing amazing right now. He's practically one of the most famous cast members out of all the SG cast right now.

I feel like Cha Eunwoo has to be one of the most prime examples of this. Very successful household name as an actor and whatever else he's doing at any given time, more well-known than Astro at this point, and still active in Astro and very dedicated to the group (as far as this non-Aroha knows, I'm not too familiar with them).

Kdrama actor turned idol?

Posted by cobiestulips · in r/kpop_uncensored · 4 months ago

Is there any kdrama actor or actress that later turned into an idol? I know there's a lot of the vice versa where kpop idol becomes famous actor like cha eunwoo (astro), Kyungsoo (Exo), park jinyoung(got7), Kim sejeong(IoI and gugudan), Kim Jisoo (BP), my queen IU and more. I was wondering if any kdrama actor made it big as an idol

K-idols vs K-actors?

Posted by Lost-Opinion3554 · in r/kpop_uncensored · 2 months ago

Hi, I'm more of a seasoned K-pop fan (listening to the genre since 2014), but I slowly started to get more into Kdramas after the release of The Glory. However, I think the thing that makes a lot of people enjoy (or hate) Kdramas and Kpop is the community surrounding them, and I was just wondering if K-actors are held to the same impossible standards that K-pop idols are when it comes to their personal lives.

Like, do Kdrama fans really care if their favorite actor gets into a relationship or not? For some K-pop idols it sometimes feels like a career killing incident. I feel like dating announcements are a little more normalized in the acting industry, but again, I'm not really in this sphere so I was wondering what your opinion on it is.

imo the "rules" have been pretty lax for actors. for example, the whole discourse regarding the squid game cast when it was revealed. the comparison between the news regarding top's weed scandal when there are multiple actors in that cast with previous sexual misconduct cases / charges.

the pipeline for actors are commonly: scandal -> drop out of current projects -> cancelled cfs (if any) -> lay low for 1 to 2 years -> optional comeback project (overseas) -> comeback project (korea)

but for idols, once they are kicked out of their group, they really have no where to get back into the industry, like what you mentioned. unless they have already established themselves in variety or acting, which is more uncommon

for dating scandals specifically, theres a couple of factors. firstly, actors rarely market themselves as parasocial targets compared to idols. for a long time, they rarely appeared on variety shows so were much more private / mysterious to the public. second, the other party. if the other party is also an idol, thats 2 fanbases to address 😅 third, career lifespan and hiatus. its more common for idols to be constantly in the public eye, compared to actors who may have hiatuses in between projects.

shewasnotthefootnote · 2 months ago

I think only if there is some issues surrounding them. I remember Lee Jinwook, Ryu Junyeol, Han Sohee, Seo Yeaji, Lee Byunghun and others having some scandals. But what I noticed is people are more lenient and forgiving on male actors than the female ones. Maybe because Korea is a patriarchal country and always have a double standards for females.

5 upvotes on reddit
sunflowersandpears · 2 months ago

Actors only get backlash for dating if it's problematic, (Park Min Young and that weird CEO guy), or they may get backlash if they're dating an idol (Lee Jae Wook and Karina).

For the most part people are happy for the actors then move on quite quickly.

5 upvotes on reddit
AvocadoFun3905 · 2 months ago

Not really because i'm pretty sure actors are allowed to date and their fans are used to seeing them with the opposite gender on screen

2 upvotes on reddit
gl_zzygod · 2 months ago

i feel like its a liiiiiitle more lenient for a couple of reasons. first of all, i don’t think there are dating rules in contracts like there are in the kpop industry. also, there’s less press following them around constantly and i do believe there are less saesang fans. nonetheless, there are still dating rumors, paparazzi, and saesang. like is it less? yes. but is it there? also yes. especially for popular actors (+ ones who may have been idols!), it is pretty much the same. if cha eunwoo had a dating scandal - all hell would break loose. ofc he and others have saesang fans too. to give an example of someone who is not also an idol, i know that gong yoo (squid game, train to busan, the trunk, etc) has had lots of issues with fans infringing upon his privacy + dating rumors. so yeah, it’s similar.

Lee Jun Young started out as an idol (U-KISS). I’m remember finding out when I first saw him in Love and Leashes and googling him - I was surprised an idol took on such a role. He’s played a couple of lead roles where his character is an idol (Imitation and Let Me Be Your Knight) and has a good voice.

Park Jihoon also started out as an idol (Wanna One). This one absolutely shocked me. He looks drastically different as an idol from his portrayal of Si Eun in Weak Hero Class.

Park Hyung Sik was in ZE:A so he also is/was an idol. I’ve never seen any clips from his idol days though.

I think all three are better known for their acting than their idol groups now.

Idol-Actors aren't always bad, you're probably just watching the wrong dramas

Posted by am_lostintranslation · in r/KDRAMA · 4 years ago

So the idol-actor thing is an age old debate.

But I've realised when people criticise their acting skills they usually criticise the acting skills of 'visual' idol-actors. These are idols known for their looks, who just get cast because they are good looking and bring in viewers. They usually lack experience and are thrown in the industry hence the limited acting skills.

Also, they tend to get cast in those typical high school cliche dramas or fluff roles so obviously we are going to see very limited acting range. Usually in these dramas they are aware the audience is probably younger too so they limit any sort of initmacy and chemistry to prevent any scandals. This makes the acting and plot very one dimensional because the actors aren't haven't be freedom to act well. Also, how many different ways can you play a high school student?

If you venture out into crime/mystery/law/melodrama you'll find that idols have more range than you think.

There are plenty of good idol-actors as I'll list below.

Imo I think idols are sometimes held to a higher standard because they are idols and people are prejudice towards them. There are some dramas I watch where a professional actor isn't very good but they don't get the same level of criticism as an idol actor in a supporting role.

Ask yourself, if I didn't know this person was an idol would I be criticising their acting? Maybe, maybe not.

My list of good idol-actors

Junho- (2PM)- Just Between Lovers, Chief Kim, Wok of Love. He was great in the dramas and showed a good range of skills from tortured bad boy to loved up chef.

Nana (After School)- Kill it, Into the Ring. Honestly I feel like she isn't mentioned enough in these debates. In both dramas she played very different characters and I felt she was immersed in the roles and was believable as the character. I didn't feel like I was watching the actress.

GOT7 Jinyoung and former SISTAR member Kim Dasom in 'He is Psychometric'. These two did such a great job. Jinyoung was brilliant and I was surprised because he seems so quiet and sensible when he's with GOT7, but he really does have range.

Seo Kang Joon (5urprise) Entourage, Watcher, Are you Human Too, When the weather is fine. He has shown so much versatility and he's easy on the eyes. Very underrated.

Park Hyunsik (ZE:A)- Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. I didn't know he was an idol when I watched SWDBS. I was impressed.

Kang Tae Oh (5urprise)- My First First Love, The Tale of Nokdu. He played a loveable character in the former and a villian in the latter. He did both very convincingly

Sunjae (BtoB)- Mystic pop up bar, Goblin. Honestly he can do well in a lead role. Very good actor.

Yuri (SNSD)- Go Hos Starry Night. Fluffy romcom but she did well and had good chemistry with the ML

Siwon ( super junior) - My fellow citizens. He was very charming in this drama.

Do you guys have any other examples of good idol actors?

Uee, Jang Nara, Jung Ryeo Won, Yoon Eun Hye, Son Ho Jun, Eric Mun, Nam Gyuri, Eugene and many more.

I personally think, many don't really mind idols in dramas but they do mind when idols take first lead roles in big productions, sidelining the other talented but less popular actor/actress.

The idols in the list you made, most started as supporting roles and got critical acclaim which lead them to have more roles and eventually lead roles.

That is true , it feels a bit strange maybe if the idol is cast only for their fame, so you feel cheated about it , but sometimes you can see that the idols are really trying to step up their acting game.

I would definetly be a bit upset if the casted roockie actor was cast for being a famous idol and their acting was kind of bad, but if the acting was relatively good maybe I could accept it. I guess the directors cast strategically since dramas with actors or idols with an already existing fan base have higher chance of larger audience numbers.

There is an upcoming drama where Black pink member Jisoo is cast as a leading role and I still see news articles about this all the time so the marketing of the drama seems to be going well but the final judgement can't be passed until it starts.

Understanding the "Idol Drama" Phenomenon

The formula is simple:
(Young and attractive actors/actresses) + (romantic or female-targeted storylines) = Idol dramas

Watch this video from the 7-minute mark:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjo7YgEpYj0

These dramas often revolve around light, romantic plots with little emphasis on realism or complexity. They're built around visual appeal—casting actors who are more known for their looks than their acting prowess. Performances are usually average, but the charm and popularity of the leads drive fan engagement.

Current hot idol for example to me is Zhang Linghe ( i dont dislike him but he fits the example)...fans post every single photoshoot.. praise the drama no matter the acting.. Few years back, it was Xu kai. Some idols transit into actors at some point. Male idols peak between 25-35 years old in general and then their sun sets.. and new young ones take over. For actresses, it is 20-30 yrs of age and they stop getting good directors and dramas..

This happens because these idol actors are there to cash their looks, earn millions through ads and do not bother to improve their range and act in dramas that require strong acting. Producers are reluctant to cast older idols in roles where youthful looks are a prerequisite or where it demands serious complex acting.

Non-idol actress example- Sun Li. She is 42 and her drama still gets high rating and watched by everyone. Another one- Bai Baihe- Known for both drama and film work, and an award-winning performer. There are several

Non-idol actor example- Zhang Ruo Yun. Highly respected and well-liked for his acting range.

An idol actress who needs to shift towards acting dramas and perhaps has the capacity- Bai Lu. She is 30. Northward might be her first serious step taken consciously into more actor-focused roles.

An idol actor trying to shift- Xu Kai

An idol actor more famous for looks than acting- Yang Yang

An idol actor who already knows he needs to shift for survival and has shifted- Bai Jingting

An idol actor who is also good actor and already doing movies- Yang Yibo, Xiao Zhan

and so on

I would argue that Song Zuer is an idol actor who's very successfully shifting. I had an argument with a Song Zuer fan years ago in this sub who argued she was a good actress, I disagreed and they blocked me.

Currently watching the prisoner of Beauty, I was shocked by how she has drastically improved.

Hasn't Bai Jingting been mixing idol roles with more serious roles for a while now? Neither Reset nor Always on the Move fits the idol description.

And has Xiao Zhan actually completed his shift? Has his shift into movies been succesful (I only know about the Condor Heroes one and allegedly that was heavily criticized)? Drama-wise it looks like he's still doing mainly idol stuff.

6 upvotes on reddit
Burning__Twilight · 3 months ago

Yes, BJT has been mixed since early on. He just took more idol dramas recently since it pays more I believe.

Xiao Zhan hasnt been successful yet. The perfect example of idol actor which has successfully transitioned in both movies and also dramas are Zhao Liying. All the her works are getting good reviews and commercially successful. Her transition to serious works are with flying colors.

9 upvotes on reddit
Burning__Twilight · 3 months ago

There are many idol actors who did movies but you can only get that recognition of successfully transitioned if you are getting a good result from it. Unfortunately, Xiao Zhan is not one of them.

For movies, the one who has successfully transitioned are only Zhao Liying & Wang Yibo from idol background for the past 5 years.

Good question, it might have to do with the industry itself. Idol dramas seem to be quicker and easier to produce, which helps them appeal to a broader audience. They've already cut down the number of episodes to a maximum of 40 per season, and I’ve heard they might reduce that even further next year. But honestly, I can't say, my knowledge of this industry is limited, LOL.

You can usually tell by seeing who is starring in them, especially lead actors. Stars such as Esther Yu,Liu Yu Ning, Bai Lu, Wang Hedi are known idols, and their dramas are idol dramas.

However some actors who chose the idol dramas route such as Vengo Gao Zhang Wanyi, Bai Jingting often act in non-idol dramas too. It is said to be very difficult to do so due to the perception hurdle they have to cross to be taken as a serious actor.

Many idol dramas actors can choose to "transform" to a more serious route. Stars that have done so include Zhang Liying and Tang Yan.

In general, costumed dramas are dominated by the idol dramas genre, but non-idol costumed dramas do exist. You can tell a rare costumed drama is non-idol if they are led by veteran actors. Some costumed dramas that are non-idol include Qingming by the Riverside, Ripe Town, Joy of Life, Longest Day of Chang'an.

Idol dramas tend to have simpler storylines than non-idol ones. It is said that the idol dramas path is more commercially rewarding for actors, tho the public often sniff at them vs prestige dramas.

IMO the concept of an idol drama doesn’t make sense. People like to talk about bad acting and good looking people but this is universal. There is a ton of bad acting in productions that people would consider to be real dramas, and some idol dramas have really good story lines. At the end of the day you will almost never see ugly people lead because most people don’t want to spend hours watching people they find ugly.

It’s a category created based on that idea that it’s ok to put down actors who are good looking because people see it only as something they are born with and they are allowed to dis that. How you look like any other asset and trait can only exceed with effort. People who embody mediocrity are unwilling to acknowledge the effort that all actors put in, in various ways and don’t like seeing people that they perceive as advantaged succeed.

I apply these criteria, with exceptions:

Young handsome boy portraying a CEO, general or emperor? - - - - > Idol drama

Famous singer cast in acting roles? - - - - > Idol drama. Example: Z.Tao, Kris Wu (before he was imprisoned)

Idols becoming actors is common but are there any examples of actors becoming idols?

Posted by scorpianio · in r/KDRAMA · 4 years ago

When I think of idol-turned-actors several people come to mind, like ZEA's Park Hyung-Sik and Siwan, Apink's Eunji, and Girl's Day's Hyeri. I can see why idols tend to go into acting as it's supposedly a more sustainable career option for the long-term and not as physically demanding as dancing and performing. I think it's also better for gaining individual recognition and praise whereas it's so much harder to do so in a group (e.g. Siwan wasn't very popular in ZEA).

It does make me wonder, are there any actors who later got into kpop and became an idol later on? Surely there'd be some people?

And if there aren't, doesn't it go to show how much better going into the Korean acting industry is vs the kpop industry?

Stayc Sieun, SF9 Chani both were child actors

Idols have to be young so it doesn't happen often

I’m surprised that Park Sieun became an idol. She’s an award-winning young actress so I thought that would be a more viable, long-term career path.

Wait she became an idol? Will she still continue acting? I really liked her acting.

The thing with becoming a kpop idol -- assuming you mean the type that are in the singing + dancing boy/girl groups is that the debut process requires lots of training. Even for the idols that debuted with their group after a relatively short period of training (think months vs. years) -- those months are super intense training.

Additionally most idols debut in their teens or early 20s -- so there sort of are age constraints to debuting with a group -- it's not really a feasible option for most actors (who are already adults) to go and then join a kpop group.

The only examples I can think of are child actors that joined kpop groups

  • G-Dragon (Big Bang)

  • Lee Hong Ki (FT Island -- more boyband/rock band than kpop idol boygroup but they were marketed like kpop idols)

There's also a girl who was a child actress in Hong Kong and then joined a girl group...and left recently -- blanking on her name because I don't follow her group.

Is he one of the BOF boys (as in he played the younger counterpart)?

As you can see from my examples, I'm more of a 2nd Gen kpop fan and am not well-versed in the younger crop of kpop idols! =P

Jang Keun Suk started out as a child actor/model at age five. He started singing professionally in his early 20’s and has released numerous albums and done concert tours all over Asia - his nickname is Asia Prince. He did it on his own without the backing and training provided by an agency but is still considered an idol.

I've never seen him being considered as an idol? There's a big difference between idols and regular singers. Regular singers don't need to promote themselves on music shows like Music Bank nor appear on variety shows like idols do.

He is considered an idol in Japan where his music career is based. I don’t understand your comment re appearing on variety shows. He appears on these shows in Japan. He returned from military service last May so hasn’t been visible for a while.

5urprise was actually a group that debuted with the concept that the members were all actors originally!

the late Sulli was actually a child actress first before she became an idol, and Oh My Girl's Binnie was also a child actress before she became an idol (she had minor roles in Sungkyunkwan Scandal, King of Baking Kim Takgu, I Love You, Don’t Cry, More Charming by the Day, and Beethoven Virus).

Successful actor/actress who were idols in the past?

Posted by xue_dcnfinkl · in r/kpophelp · 5 years ago

The ones that I can remember are Jang Nara (soloist), Huang Jung Eum (Sugar), Jung ryeowon (Chakra) and Park Hee Bong (M.I.L.K). Are there any other actor or actress who used to be idols before they decided to enter the acting scene?

Edit: I think one good marker of classifying the actor/actress as successful is being able to not have news articles associate them with their idol group when talking about their acting works

Park Hyungsik and Im Siwan were in ZE:A. There were a few others from the group who have also acted, but those two are the only notable ones. Kwanghee was also in ZE:A, but he's a variety star.

Yoon Eun Hye was in Baby V.O.X.

Ryu Hwayoung was in T-ara.

Seo In Guk was a solo singer.

Jinyoung from GOT7 for sure. He has improved a lot compared to his early acting career and is really good now. His first role as the main lead was He Is Psychometric and I loved him in it- he was very convincing (and his eyes can express a lot that’s unsaid). I know he’s extremely passionate about acting and is constantly trying to get better, which also factors in to his success. He has a drama called The Devil’s Justice/Judge coming out soon!

True, HIP Jinyoung is completely different from Got7 Jinyoung. If I was an outsider, I wouldn't have ever thought that the real life Jinyoung was quiet, peaceful, and savage and could kill people by staring.

Ahaha yess the dichotomy between Actor Park and Idol Jinyoung is mind boggling- I wonder if he ever feels cognitive dissonance lmao (especially with his previous Junior persona too)

Park Hyungsik from ZE:A! He's been in a few popular kdramas like strong girl do bong soon (where I thought he was pretty great), the heirs and hwarang. He's also been in musicals and a film now, and got the best new actor award for the critics choice in 2019, so pretty good all in all!

Don't know how well they're rated among the public, but I also liked Infinite's L in one more time, and recently Kim sejeong in uncanny counter if they haven't been mentioned already :)

IU is a great actress. Between My Mister and Hotel Del Luna you can really see her full range. Honestly, I wouldn't even call her an idol actress anymore. She is a proper singer and a proper actress. Can't wait for her movies.

successful idol actors in K-dramas

Key Considerations for Successful Idol Actors in K-Dramas:

  1. Popularity and Fan Base: Many idol actors come from successful K-pop groups, which gives them a built-in fan base that can boost viewership for their dramas.

  2. Acting Skills: While some idol actors start with limited acting experience, many invest time in training and take acting classes to improve their skills. Look for those who have received positive reviews for their performances.

  3. Versatility: Successful idol actors often take on diverse roles, showcasing their ability to adapt to different genres, whether it's romance, comedy, or action.

  4. Chemistry with Co-Stars: Strong on-screen chemistry with co-stars can significantly enhance the appeal of a drama. Many successful idol actors are known for their ability to create engaging dynamics with their partners.

  5. Public Image: An idol's public persona can influence their acting career. Those who maintain a positive image and connect well with fans tend to have more successful transitions into acting.

Notable Idol Actors:

  • Park Seo-joon: Originally a member of the boy band 5urprise, he has starred in hit dramas like "What's Wrong with Secretary Kim" and "Itaewon Class."

  • Kim Soo-hyun: While not a traditional idol, he gained immense popularity through his roles in "My Love from the Star" and "It's Okay to Not Be Okay."

  • Bae Suzy: Formerly a member of Miss A, she has successfully transitioned into acting with roles in "While You Were Sleeping" and "Vagabond."

  • Lee Seung-gi: A singer and actor known for his roles in "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho" and "Vagabond," he has a strong fan base in both music and acting.

  • Jisoo (BLACKPINK): Recently made her acting debut in "Snowdrop," showcasing her potential as an actress.

Recommendation: If you're interested in K-dramas featuring idol actors, consider starting with "What's Wrong with Secretary Kim" for a blend of romance and comedy, or "Itaewon Class" for a more serious and inspiring storyline. These dramas highlight the talents of their idol actors while offering engaging plots.
