Idols Turned Actors
Many K-pop idols have successfully transitioned into acting, starring in various K-dramas. Some notable examples include Cha Eunwoo from Astro, who is well-known for his roles in dramas and is considered a household name [3:3]. D.O. from EXO has also received recognition for his acting skills
[4:6]. Other idols such as IU (solo), Ok Taecyeon (2PM), Suzy (Miss A), and Jinyoung (GOT7) have made significant impacts in the drama industry
[4:1].
Successful Idol Actors
Several idols have become successful actors while maintaining their music careers. Minho from SHINee, Joy and Yeri from Red Velvet, and Sungjae from BTOB are examples of idols who continue to be active in their groups while pursuing acting [3:1]
[3:4]. Kim Sejeong, formerly of IOI and Gugudan, is praised for her dual success as both a singer and actress
[4:11].
Idols in BL Dramas
A number of idols have starred in Boys' Love (BL) dramas. Jiwoong from ZEROBASEONE appeared in "Kissable Lips" and "Roommates of Poongduck 304" [2:1]
[5:5]. Jaechan from DKZ was in "Semantic Error," which he starred alongside former KNK member Seoham
[5:3]. Other idols such as Hyuk, Leo, and N from VIXX have participated in gay dramas
[5:2].
Idols with Diverse Acting Roles
Some idols have ventured into diverse roles beyond typical K-dramas. For instance, Park Junhee from A.C.E played the lead in the BL drama "Tinted With You" [5:4]. Additionally, Moonbin (Astro) played a gay character in the drama "Moment at 18"
[2:5]. These roles showcase the versatility and range of idols in the acting field.
Recommendations Beyond the Discussions
While these discussions highlight many successful idol actors, there are countless others contributing to the growing intersection of K-pop and K-drama. Exploring platforms like Netflix or Viki can provide additional insights into the latest dramas featuring idols.
Is there any kdrama actor or actress that later turned into an idol? I know there's a lot of the vice versa where kpop idol becomes famous actor like cha eunwoo (astro), Kyungsoo (Exo), park jinyoung(got7), Kim sejeong(IoI and gugudan), Kim Jisoo (BP), my queen IU and more. I was wondering if any kdrama actor made it big as an idol
Maybe ZB1's Kim Jiwoong?
He was originally an idol before acting though, and got to acting most likely through the idol industry so I wouldn't count him in this specific scenario!
Yeah he debuted as a kpop idol in 2016 and he didn't start acting until 2021, so you can't use him as an example.
He was a bl actor right??
Yes, he did some vampire bl dramas.
Moonbin was a child actor before he became an idol
STAYC’s Park Sieun
interesting on her part because she could basically choose any path and succeeded, she must really love singing
sf9 chani
Not k-drama, but seventeen's Jun was a child c-drama actor, who's now an idol, he still continues to act though.
🏳🌈
woonggi was in one recently but i cant think of the name
ZEROBASEONE - Jiwoong (Kissable Lips, Roommates of Poongduck 304)
DKZ - Jaechan (Semantic Error)
Former The Boyz - Hwall (Color Rush)
VIXX - Hyuk (Color Rush 2), Leo (Happy Ending Romance)
A.C.E - Junhee (Tinted With You)
SPECTRUM - Jaehan (A Shoulder to Cry on)
OMEGA X - Yechan (A Shoulder to Cry on)
Omega X- Jae Han (A Shoulder to Cry on)
Omega X- Han Gyeom (Jazz for Two)
Newkidd- Jin Kwon (Jazz for Two)
Former KNK member Seoham was also in Semantic Error
OnlyOneOf did, I believe!
Yes every member starred in Bump up Business! Semantic Error with Jaechan from DKZ.
That wouldn't surprise me as they're known for supporting lgbt lol
not a bl but moonbin (rip) did play a gay character in the drama moment at 18
Jiwoong
Who are the idols that have the actors/actress disease that are still active in their group?
Got7 Jinyoung, Twice Dahyun, Blackpink Jisoo, and Astro Cha Eunwoo
I feel like Cha Eunwoo has to be one of the most prime examples of this. Very successful household name as an actor and whatever else he's doing at any given time, more well-known than Astro at this point, and still active in Astro and very dedicated to the group (as far as this non-Aroha knows, I'm not too familiar with them).
The way I know him is from his acting & not his music lolol
I should give it a listen tho!
BTOB Sungjae
I feel like he might not be the best example as of late 😭 iirc BTOB has been promoting as 4 members for a while (Changsub and Sungjae are in other companies and seem to be busy with their other endeavors). that said I think Sungjae is still definitely part of the group! hoping for an OT6 comeback soon :3
Jinyoung
SHINee Minho (Key and Onew have also done some acting but aren't in as many Kdramas as Minho)
Most Exo members (D.O. especially)
Red Velvet Joy and Yeri
I know Cha eunwoo is a very successful and good actor, but there are surely more.
IU (solo)
Ok Taecyeon (2PM)
Suzy (Miss A)
Park Hyungsik (ZE:A)
Jinyoung (GOT7)
Yoona & Seohyun & Sooyoung(GG)
Seolhyun (AOA)
Suho & D.O. (EXO)
Rowoon (SF9)
Siwan (ZE:A)
Minho (Shinee)
T.O.P (BigBang)
Sungjae (BtoB)
Kwon Nara (Hello Venus)
Krystal (f(x))
Seo Inguk (solo)
These are the ones I can think of immediately
Edit :- added 4 more
Edit :- edited out V cuz yes can't judge him yet
Seolhyun was in AOA
SNSD's actress line are YoonA, Seohyun, Yuri and Sooyoung. YoonA is, obviously, the biggest name, but all 4 are reasonably successful (lead drama and movie roles, awards etc).
Sooyoung became a big name too through 'so i married an Anti fan' thanks for reminding.
Is Seohyun for Snsd, Seolhyun is a member of Aoa but she's also an actress so it fits either way
Seventeen's Jun!! He's recently starred in a film with THE Jackie Chan.
Well he is still successful through squid game (if not through his other acting gigs) since OP asked for ones that are successful i mentioned him (regardless of his PAST).
Edit :- And other Factuals the VIPs have explained 👇🏻
EXO's D.O.
Yeah that's why I didn't include him in the main list (rather did in an edit) but he sure created buzz during that time.
Though Hwarang wasn't my cup of tea he did considerably well ig.
Along with what u said i would really like to see Jin do an acting gig 🙏🏻
He's busy promoting Squid Game this week. Netflix treats him like he's the main character. He even filmed Netflix K-Content ads with Martha Stewart.
Park Jihoon (ex Wanna One) is getting a lot of recognition for Weak Class Hero atm.
TOP's not "being" cancelled. He "was" cancelled. For smoking weed like what... 2 times? In an incident that happened close to 10 years ago. Squid Games is his return to form. He's doing amazing right now. He's practically one of the most famous cast members out of all the SG cast right now.
Kim Sejeong, She's excelent as a singer and as an actress!
I know zuho from sf9 once played in a bl, but i don't know any others.
Hyuk, Leo, & N from VIXX all have been cast in gay dramas. Jaehyun from NCT was supposed to be in one, but the drama was cancelled.
Seoham (ex-KNK) and Jaechan (DKZ) both acted in Semantic Error and were the main protagonists (awesome drama if you haven't watched it!).
Park Junhee from A.C.E is the lead in a BL called "Tinted With You". I find the writing kind of eh, but his acting in it is excellent.
Can't believe Jiwoong (ZB1) hasn't been mentioned yet lol
From what I understand, Kissable Lips and Roommates of Poongduck 304 changed lives
Our Vampire King!!! The reason I watched Boys Planet in the first place was because Jiwoong was in it! I miss these two together tho!
Literally my #1 pick!! And he's so proud of his BL history.
Yechan and Jaehan from Omega X starred in a Shoulder to Cry on. Hangyeom from the same group starred in Jazz for Two.
Jizz for two was iconic
Currently watching the king’s affection and Rowoon’s acting is so natural and if I didn’t know he’s from SF9, I would’ve guessed that he debuted as an actor. Same with Chani for Sky Castle, I did not know SF9 before then and I was curious about him and was shocked that he’s actually an idol as well.
So I am wondering who are y’all favorite idols turned actors? or vice versa :)
One of my absolute favorites is Park Hyungsik who debuted as an idol with ZE:A (along with Im Siwan and Kim Dongjun, among others). He was my bias in ZE:A, too. And while they didn't particularly flourish as idols due to S-word Empire, he's been acting up a storm. I'm so happy to see him back and active in dramas since his enlistment finished.
And of course, I also love Eunwoo. People might think he's a one-note actor, but he's actually not. I'll leave it at that since his acting has always been highly controversial and I'm not really up to debate about it. :)
Hold on, Park Hyung Sik was an idol? I'm currently watching Happiness rn and I didn't know this. He is such a good actor!
Yes! He debuted in 2010 as an idol and was a main vocalist in ZE:A. The group is pretty much inactive indefinitely now, though.
I’m watching Happiness too and his acting skills is always phenomenal. He has such a great chemistry with Han Hyojoo!
2PM's Taecyeon and EXO's D.O!
I love Vincenzo and I love how Taecyeon potrays the villain in that drama! Also, can’t forget about D.O, I watched 100 days my prince multiple times and his acting in Along with the gods is impeccable!
EXO DO and Got7 Jinyoung.
DO is a natural and is soo talented, his first drama it’s okay thats love was so amazing
Jinyoung’s drama he is phsycometric is so good and his crying scene broke my heart.
Yes, I agree with you! I love D.O in 100 days my prince, it just suits him and I’ve only watched Jinyoung in He is psychometric but his acting made a lasting impact to me too. Can’t wait to see more content from both of them!
DO was so good in My anoying brother. I love that movie. He has a smaller role in Along with the gods, but he made quite an impression there also.
He’s my fave too, I think he also picks really good scripts and is super good looking. I first watched him in what happens to my family a popular weekend drama and he was so cute and I have since watched him in all his dramas. I think in korea he’s more known as an actor now.
I used to never think much of IU as an actor cause I found her acting to be mostly kinda bland but 'My Mister' changed my opinion so drastically. She was absolutely fantastic in that drama!
BTOB Sungjae!
Sunghoon from Enhypen, he was a professional figure skater before debuting as a kpop idol. Are there any idols who had different careers as well?
Sieun of StayC was a teen actress and played the younger version of female leads in a lot of dramas in the last 5 years or so.
Same with Binnie from Oh My Girl!
Lee Know from Stray Kids was a professional dancer and was one of BTS's back dancer.
Same with Shotaro from NCT. He was a back dancer to Gackt and was a dance instructor.
I believe Ni-Ki from Enhyphen was also a back dancer. He danced with SHINee.
Ni-Ki wasn't exactly a back dancer. He danced as mini key in their concert.
Wow. Reading Gackt's name in a Kpop sub was not in my 2021 and especially on the very last day. But here we are.
Isn’t he like 16 though? Lol
solar from mamamoo trained to be a flight attendant before becoming a trainee at rbw
nct’s chenle was a solo artist in china and released three albums before debuting in nct dream
I remembered his performances in a China x a European country I unfortunately do not remember Commemorative (???) Day
Also in Dream, Jisung and Jeno did acting as children
Jackson was an Olympian in the Youth Olympics (fencing)
Who is the last girl?
Kim Jung Eun of Lovers in Paris was popular in our country back then.
Last person is Kim Hye Soo
Winter sonata was weird.
I've always been close with my younger sister. Idk why. I have funny feelings for her, but whatever yo, I'm her brother. I'm not gonna cross those lines. OH whatttt she was actually switched at birth?? BET I'm I'm gonna love her like I've always wanted to cuz it actually ISN'T incest now cool cool cool
Edit: thank you to the user below me who corrected me! Apparently what I'm describing is another kdrama called "Autumn In My Heart" / "Autumn Sonata".
Stairways to Heaven starring Choi Ji Woo was the BLUEPRINT for kdramas. That drama explored every trope you can think of! Lost memories, forgotten identity, evil stepmom and stepsis, handsome chaebol fiance, studying in america overseas, childhood sweethearts, car accidents, tragic ending, cancer, love triangle, poor girl-rich man, etc!
I watched it religiously as a kid! Lol.
There was a reason she was so perfect in her Crash Landing cameo!
That CLOY cameo made me giggle because NK dramas are still stuck in early 2000s fan girling over her. It was perfect, indeed! And she was also pregnant when they filmed that scene. So gorgeous!
That and Winter Sonata which I’ve always thought of a drama version of An Affair to Remember.
And one of the most iconic OSTs to this day imo
BOGOSHIPDAAAAA 💔
Every asian girl had that necklace too at the time
Yes!!! lol I wanted one so bad! Haha 😂
Yes I am a fan even after not knowing any of these icons >.<
Is that even possible?
Not all but there's a few members who are more famous than the group, ZE:A.
Im Siwan Park Hyunsik Kwanghee
Kim Dongjun too
Probably but I wouldn’t really count them since that was the sole purpose of these groups, to bring together the most popular members from their respective groups to make a super group instead of them becoming bigger than the group if that makes sense :]
Was it most popular members? Because I don't think Hyoyeon was ever one of the more popular members of SNSD, and they still have the majority of SNSD in their company
Maybe sf9 ive heard they're all doing well from themselves as actors to the point of being more known for that
Yeah, I knew Chani from True Beauty and Imitation. So I was suprised to see him on Kingdom and learn he's an idol.....
Hwi Young was also in Imitation and is in Miracle with Chani again
I knew Chani from Signal and Sky Castle, he was also Song Joong-ki's youngest self in Innocent Man, i find out he's a idol way later
it’s only really rowoon and chani who have proper acting careers that they are probably more famous for than being in sf9. but that’s only 2 out of 9 members :,)
15& was a duo under JYP which included Jamie (Park Jimin) and Yerin Baek. Both of them have become far more successful and well known after leaving JYP and going solo, Baek Yerin especially has a pretty great little niche in indie music carved out for herself (please listen to tellusaboutyourself if you haven’t already, one of the best albums of 2021 from any genre) but Jamie has certainly done a good job especially as a features artist.
I bet your answer could also be found in the super nugus. there was a group i saw that was made up of twitch streamers and if i had to guess id bet theyre all more popular as streamers than in their temporary group. I dont even remember their name at this point so i know this isnt a very helpful answer.
Except for siwan, kwanghee, and that one guy who looks like han gain, idk who the other members are.
Edit: mixed up the GaIns
You don't know Park Hyunsik!?😱
