IU's Impact in K-Drama
IU, originally a singer, has made a significant mark in the acting world with her performances. Her role in "My Mister" was highly praised, showcasing her ability to portray complex emotions and depth [1:2],
[3:2]. This performance led to her winning the Most Popular Actress award at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards
[3:1]. IU's transition from music to acting has been successful, making her one of the top idol actors in Korea
[3:8].
Junho from 2PM
Lee Junho of 2PM is another idol who has gained recognition for his acting skills. He has impressed audiences with roles in dramas such as "Just Between Lovers" and "Confession" [2:2],
[2:5]. Despite being an idol, his acting prowess has often overshadowed his musical background, leading some fans to forget he started as a singer
[2:3]. His upcoming projects, like the historical drama "Red Stained Sleeve Cuff," are highly anticipated
[2:4].
D.O. from EXO
D.O., also known as Do Kyung-soo from EXO, has become well-known for his acting capabilities. His performances in "It's Okay That's Love" and "Hello Monster" have been particularly notable [4]. D.O.'s acting has earned him accolades, including the Most Popular Actor award at the Baeksang Arts Awards alongside IU
[3:6].
Other Notable Idol Actors
Several other idols have successfully transitioned into acting. Im Siwan from ZE:A is recognized for his roles in "Misaeng" and "Strangers From Hell" [4]. Ok Taecyeon from 2PM received praise for his role in "Vincenzo"
[2:12]. Suzy from Miss A has also become more renowned for her acting than her singing, earning the title "the nation's first love" through her roles in various trendy dramas
[5:10].
Idols More Known for Acting
Some idols have become more famous for their acting careers than their music. Cha Eunwoo from Astro and Chani from SF9 are examples of idols whose acting work has brought them significant recognition [5:2],
[5:3]. The members of ZE:A, despite disbanding, are now well-known actors
[5:6].
I recently saw a post about the worst acting in kdrama, thought why not flip the table and get people's opinion for best acting in kdrama.
I recently watched weightlifting fairy kim bok joo and I thought Lee Sung Kyung did a perfect job in portraying an awkward and affable female lead. You can definitely feel that awkward cringe with her interaction with the male lead which makes it even more endearing.
Another good acting I like is Shin Hye Sun in My Golden Life. I basically cried everytime she cried and I feel like I could empathise with whatever pain she was feeling at that scene.
Lee Sun Kyun in My Mister. There was so much warmth yet sadness in his character and he portrayed it all soooo perfectly. Could not imagine another actor for that role. IU was incredibly impressive as well. When I first watched the drama I didn’t know IU was actually a singer and was shocked to learn that acting wasn’t her main thing.
Lee Hyeri in Reply 1988. Deok Sun has to be my FAVOURITE female lead. I loved how imperfect she was and Lee hyeri did the best possible job in portraying the goofy yet caring girl that is deok sun
Omg yes to the two leads in My Mister! I can’t imagine anyone else play Park Dong-hoon either; it’s like the role was written for him and even his voice (for the >!wiretapping!<). Unlike you, I knew IU was a singer, but was still pleasantly surprised because I mostly heard bad things about her acting (which I would agree with when it comes to her old dramas, but damn she really improved and it was so satisfying to see that).
Agree. I'm not a fan of IU at all but after watching MM, I saw she could act.
My mister, yes lee sun kyun was amazing. I can feel his pain in many many scenes. IU also amazing, same here I was not aware that IU is a singer, then I watched hotel del luna after my mister and even more impressed on how well she act on my mister vs what she's done at hotel del luna (seems to be more typical bratty, act pretty and arrogant normal type).
I feel like I say My Mister for everything but it’s such a superb drama that it’s warranted. Both the leads were absolutely fantastic.
Oh Jung-se in It's Okay to Not Be Okay.
Jung Kyung Ho in all of the things. Dude knows how to act.
He is one of my favs bc of his versatility & the emotion he conveys. If I see he's in a drama, I watch it.
Kang Ha Neul best actor ever
OMG I didn’t even recognize him in Misaeng!! Truly the sign of a great actor.
He and Kim Mu Yeol in Forgotten changed me tbh. Their performances were so impactful.
He is incredibly talented. He’s one of the few male actors working in k-dramas that is so good that I forget that I’m watching an actor play a part when I’m watching him. Usually I’m like “oh it’s so and so as such and such...” but with him he just IS who he is playing.
Some idol actors get a lot of flak for being awkward, stiff, and lacking chemistry with their counterparts and deservedly so. While I do tend to avoid dramas with idol actors, I have to say that they're not always bad. I just wanted to highlight some of the idol actors that I think did a really get job in some of the dramas they were in.
2PM Lee Junho - I loved him so much in Just Between Lovers that I started Confession (2019) and he's killing it. Honestly sometimes I forget that he's an idol.
Exo D.O. - He was so creepy in Hello Monster/I Remember You and I really enjoyed watching him in 100 Days My Prince. He actually made me realize that not all idol actors can't act.
ZE:A Im Siwan - He is so versatile. He can go from being a shy, passive guy in Misaeng to a disturbing character near the end of Strangers From Hell.
IU - I thought she did a great job in Hotel Del Luna. I haven't watched My Mister but I heard she's phenomenal in that as well.
SNSD Sooyoung - I never listened to SNSD so I had no idea she was even an idol. Her comedic timing is great in So I Married The Anti-Fan. She was wonderful in Run On as well.
What idol actors deserve more recognition for their acting skills?
There are some people mentioned here already I think are great, like Junho, IU, etc, but here are a couple I haven't seen in the comments yet
5surprise Seo Kang Joon: I'm only going off his performance in Are You Human Too but he was amazing in his double role! The contrast between his characters was amazing!
WINNER Kang Seung Yoon: he was amazing in Kairos and Prison Playbook!
BtoB Yook Sungjae: the first thing I saw him in was Goblin and I remember there was one scene where he was >!possessed by god!< or something (it's been a while), and I remember being like, oh shit he's good!! He was great and very lovable in Mystic Pop Up Bar too!
Honestly there are probably a ton I haven't even realized were idols yet! And also some I'm forgetting. But those are some I know of that have impressed me. I also found out after starting the dramas that they were idols, so this is not the perspective of a stan.
I remember Yook Sung Jae in "Who Are You - 2015" and was left disappointed that he didn't end up with the main character. He had so much more chemistry with Kim So Hyun than Nam Joo Hyuk.
>Seo Kang Joon
It was his first drama I've watched and he was so great in it!!! I actually love all of his projects and I think he deserves more love
Someone finally mentioned 5urprise! It was kinda surprising (no pun intended) that no one has mentioned them yet considering they were an idol group formed mostly to act. Aside from Seo Kang Joon, I personally love Kang Tae Oh and Gong Myung from that group. Especially Kang Tae Oh, recently. He was great in Tale of Nokdu and I loved him in Doom At Your Service as well.
I immediately thought of Junho and IU upon reading that title.
Junho is criminally underrated, as well as his dramas. So far ive watched Just Between Lovers, Confession, and Chief Kim and im very impressed. Though im a big fan of 2pm, the thought of him being an idol would slip my mind while watching his dramas because hes that good. I hope he lands in a successful drama that would grant him more recognition like Vincenzo did to Taecyeon. He really deserves it
As for IU, she definitely deserves the recognition she has received. Her performances and range is off the charts. She fit the roles perfectly and aced them
Strangers from Hell was also my very first kdrama and i was surprised when i realized Siwan is an idol. He was really good in it
I love Junho! He has a historical drama coming up this year, Red Stained Sleeve Cuff, with Lee Se Young and I'm really looking forward to it
If you haven’t seen Wok of Love, you should check that out too. That was my first introduction to Junho and he’s adorable in that. It took my brain so long to comprehend it was the same person in Just Between Lovers. I only later discovered he’s an idol! I think he’s a criminally underrated actor.
I actually wanna watch Wok of Love but i feel its too fluffy for my taste lol. Id give it a try for Junho. Also, go for Chief Kim as its probably my favorite role of Junho and he’s evil but hilarious in it
I first watched Junho in Wok of Love. He didn't impressed me much. Then decided to give him another chance, so i watched Just Between Love. Gosh am I glad I watched that he was so good in that drama.
Also in Signal. I didn't know him back when I watched the show and wasn't thinking for a single second that he could have been an idol.
Vincenzo is an action-comedy though. I thought Ok Taecyeon did great (but then again I'm a big Taecyeon fan)
I'd add Ok Taecyeon from 2PM to this list as well. His performance in Vincenzo was absolutely amazing. Just the aura he portrayed was so evil and psychotic that I was expecting him to be evil in his interviews also lol.
I also find Park Hyungsik's acting quite good. He was great in strong woman do bong soon and honestly low key carried hwarang for me.
Not surprised about IU, as her performance in "My Mister" was the best I've seen all year. I was actually surprised how well she pulled off that more darker role compared to her previous ones. She basically became Ji An for me, so I'm curious what she's going to do next after having received such high votes for the award nomination.
she got casted in Hotel Del Luna alongside Yeo Jin Goo (and it will be the first time her co-male lead is younger than her considering how every co-male lead she's had thus far are several years older than her).
She really did a phenomenal job. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but she had a rough early life (grew up in impoverished conditions, which caused her to go and live with her grandmother who she loved a lot) so I like to think she drew on those experiences to really portray her character so well.
Can’t wait to see Kyungsoo act more! He really deserves all of this recognition :’)
So at this point, IU should be considered the top idol, right? She’s an award-winning singer/songwriter and now she’s also an award-winning actress. She came from a poor childhood too and became successful after many years of hard work. For me, Jonghyun is the top male idol and IU is the top female idol. Would’ve been cool if they did a collaboration...oh wait, they did! Anyhow, congrats IU! I watched some of My Mister and she was amazing as always!
Shes not exactly an idol but a soloist which is different imo.
she's still considered an idol because she started off as one.
She is very very popular in SK. 'The Nation's ______' title isn't awarded lightly.
Her ads are everywhere.
She is at the top of the entertainment industry, yes. (obviously not considering the buisnessmen behind everything)
congratz Kyungsoo ♥♥♥
IU deserves this and everything else that’s she pursues.
Who are your favorite K-Pop idols turned actors/actresses?
Mine are:
Actors:
EXO's Do Kyung Soo/D.O.: Stellar performances in It's Okay That's Love, My Annoying Brother (film), Hello Monster, 100 Days My Prince, Pure Love and his other projects. I know he's EXO's pride when it comes to acting and singing - he's perfect! ^(He's also my EXO bias he he)
ZE:A's Im Siwan: Who can forget Siwan's amazing acting in Misaeng and Strangers From Hell? I can't wait for Run-On to finally see him in a romance drama. I felt like his past roles were tailor-made for him! Also, his fellow ZE:A members Park Hyung Sik and Kim Dong Jun are good actors too.
Actresses:
Notable mentions:
Update: this was also posted on r/kpop. link
Title says it all.
Cha Eunwoo from Astro…is a major one
Suzy from Miss A
i was introduced to chani through sky castle. i had no clue he was an idol while watching the drama
The members of ZE:A. They disbanded in 2017, but many/all of the members are well known actors rn.
While watching Strong Girl Do-Bong Soon, I kept telling myself the love interest looked so idol-like... And that's how I discovered the group lol. I was into kpop years before they disbanded but that was how I learned they existed !
Oh lol, I only found out recently after hearing one of their songs on Spotify. I went to put it in my playlist on YouTube and saw the mv.
I was shocked to see Siwan* in Run On (great drama btw). I was a casual fan of ZE:A many years ago and had completely forgot about them, but as I started watching I noticed his face looked familiar
Edit: misspelled Siwan’s name
Probably 2PM's Junho and Taecyeon due to their recent success in acting, at least to new fans.
Yeah since 2pm were on a hiatus for the past 5 years those two in particular did a lot of acting and got noticed :)
I think the only other dramas of his I watched before Vincenzo were Dream High and Let’s Fight Ghost. This… was a shock (to say the least). He’s soooo good and has improved so much!
Suzy's definitely more well-known for her acting, especially nowadays... even though she has released music recently, she's more famed as "the nation's first love" and the leading actress of so many trendy dramas...
Not many idols received good reviews when they turned into acting. Apart from the idols who possesse great acting skills, many other KPOP idols are considered the “blackholes” of Korean movie industry and received lots of bad reviews whenever they act in new films. These are the 6 names that are mentioned the most, described as “emotionless”
Before becoming an actress, Hye Ri used to be a vocal of the idol girl group Girl’s Day. After the explosive success of Reply 1988, she has become much more popular. However, after 6 years, people still only remember Hye Ri as Duk Sun. She continuously received bad reviews for other new roles, for example, the role of Lee Dam in “My Roommate Is A Gumiho”
His acting skill has not been recognized by hard-core movies fans or experts in acting. Moreover, lots of netizens often leave comments saying he can’t act and even call him “emotionless handsome actor”
Double Patty is the first Korean movie starring Red Velvet‘s visual member, Irene. However, most viewers criticized her lack of emotion and expressionless, dull tone. Many netizens commented that Irene is a prime example of an idol actor who only has a pretty face and lacks the acting skills.
The drama series Rich Man, Poor Woman starring EXO‘s leader, Suho, used to receive negative comments due to the male lead’s awkward acting and monotonous expression.
N‘s acting in Mine was not appreciated by viewers because his performance was claimed to be stiff and awkward, lacking emotional depth and highlights. Even the chemistry between him and his co-star makes the couple seem unnecessary among the characters of Mine.
I NEVER KNEW HE WAS AN IDOL
i ADORED yook sungjae in mystic pop up bar
IU has also won several awards for her work as an actress, earning the title "Best New Actress" at the 2014 KBS Drama Awards for her performance in ‘You're the Best, Lee Soon-shin’. It was a phenomenal show! ⭐️⭐️
Kyungsoo / D.O - exo is amazing at acting
Facts. He was superb in Its okay that's love and especially hello monster
His first role’s character was always supposed to go to an EXO member and D.O. won the part out, but his character was always written in case everyone was a dud. Critics raves about his portrayal though; they said he completely blew apart their preconceived notions about idol actors.
And he’s never giving up music if he has the choice. He’s been clear from the beginning that he doesn’t want to choose between music and acting, so he won’t. Plus with a voice as incredible as his, it would be an absolute shame for him to never sing again.
IU is definitely considered a talented actor
IU is a revelation in My Mister.
I agree, there are numerous that are strictly screen actor debut/working people who lack acting chops compared to IU… this coming from a non-fan.
Jinyoung is an incredible actor. S2 of Yumi’s Cells destroyed me emotionally.
My favorite idol actors are Junho, Kyungsoo, Siwan and Hyungsik and Park Jinyoung (GOT7) and they act really well.
I can't believe it took this long to get to Prince Kyungsoo. 😻
I'm honestly so curious to know whose careers you find admirable and why. I know there's always discourse about awards vs. popularity (I don't really have a strong opinion about either as both have merits and depends on the actor's goal) so I would be interested to find out whose career - awards, longevity, choices in drama, etc - you'd like to have if you were a kdrama actor.
I'd really have to have a discussion as well why you would like to emulate their career. Is it because of their choice in projects? Their reputation? The various awards they have received? Their successful movie career?
For me, personally, and this might be an unpopular opinion, but I would LOVE to have Park Min Young's career. People might dig on her for choosing similar works but imagine being able to work with the top actors in her industry (JCW, PSJ, SJK, LMH among some) and play lovable characters in romcoms that are beloved by a lot of people?
IU as well especially since it's admirable that she's able to have a successful career both as a soloist and an actress.
I'd really have to have a discussion as well why you would like to emulate their career. Is it because of their choice in projects? Their reputation? The various awards they have received? Their successful movie career?
Did not he have cancer though? That might explain not being in dramas
I think you're talking about Kim Woo Bin? From The Heirs and Uncontrollably Fond?
I think the one you have in mind is Kim Woo-bin
Lee Jong Suk, he may not be the best actor, but he is great at choosing projects(perhaps one of the best amongst his counterparts). I have enjoyed all of his projects and while he mostly plays similar type of characters, his dramas are always well written, have unique plots, carry social messages(mans was starring in a drama about fake news in 2014), are tightly made, are equipped with great supporting casts and ultimately are successful. I never have to think twice about watching a drama of his because of this, looking forward to his comeback drama, Big Mouth. I also have to give him props for playing a gay character in 2010, despite the conservative society and times.
I remember seeing him in secret garden and was shook that they inserted a gay character. I'm so glad he did well after that. I've recently watched Hymn of death and his performance with Shin Hye Sun was amazing.
I absolutely cannot wait for Big Mouth. I've watched all his dramas and been waiting for his comeback for soo long.
Jang Na Ra. She's been working since 2000 and has 21 dramas under her which means one drama each year. In those 21 dramas, she is the lead in 20 dramas. And all those are quality dramas. Add to that 4 movies. Never took a break. I don't know how she does it. To top it off she was also an idol.
I love her OST for the drama Dong Yi.
kim dami! to be able to touch a project and turn it into gold is is a talent exclusive to her. besides choosing excellent scripts, the calm aura she exudes, as well as the fact that she is really comfortable in her own skin is something i’m really envious of. her life is also really private & free of any controversies which is cool. her expertise in the art goes without saying, and the clear distinction she’s made between “work days” and “rest days” is a feat that she has achieved from the very beginning of her career.
I personally love his acting and he’s easily my favourite kdrama actor but I also acknowledge that there are better actors than him (solely acting wise). I never meant it offensively, I only said it since the discussion was about acting careers you admire. Lee Jong suk has been able to stand out despite not being considered the best at acting and that’s what I was pointing out…
Son Yejin. I get to have awesome strong-relatable-woman roles, a sum total of maybe half a second of controversies, and a smash hit that propels me into global stardom and a sweet relationship with Hyun Bin.
Same. He did a few dramas that got him popular. Switched to movies that made him popular and critically acclaimed. Then unofficially retired to the countryside, got married, bought up lots of real estate for passive income, and signed on to commercials for steady income. The man is living a happy, relaxed, rich life.
I was not super interested in k-dramas with Siwan until recently, but I watched Unlocked and Strangers fom Hell and discovered what a phenomenal actor he is. Same with Yeo Jin Goo - didn't pay attention to his work, but then I watched Link, Beyond Evil and The Crowned Clown. That man can cry like nobody else can and has chemistry with everyone he is paired up with, he such a good actor. I wonder if I am missing out on k-dramas with stellar acting performances, because I am not paying attention to some actors and genres?
What are some specific actors/actresses and k-dramas or movies that were especially strong in their performances?
Kim Hye-soo- she’s a veteran in the industry and always puts out A+ performance. Her recent drama Under the Queen’s Umbrella is one of the best drama of 2022. Also Hyena, Juvenile Justice, Signal to name a few.
Yoo Ah-in- look, I know he’s been in hot waters recently but that doesn’t take away from how talented this guy is. I love almost every drama he’s in, but one of my most favorite is Secret Love Affair (also starring my other fave Kim Hee-ae), Chicago Typewriter, Six Flying Dragons.
Kim Hee-ae- Secret Love Affair, The World of the Married, A Wife’s Credentials.
Kim Tae-ri- Mr. Sunshine, 25-21.
Kim Go-eun- if you really want to see her acting chops, watch the movies Coin Locker Girl (also starring Kim Hye-soo), & Eungyo. I also like her in romcoms like Goblin & Yumi’s Cells.
Son Ye-jin- ok I admit, I’m a Binjin shipper and naturally CLOY is one of my faves, but I think Son Ye-Jin’s best works were her earlier ones, e.g. A Moment to Remember, The Classic, The Last Princess.
My personal favourite is Ji Chang-Wook. He was amazeballz as the ML in Healer, Lovestruck in the City, the Sound of Magic (he sings too). These are his standouts for me personally. I just find he has excellent chemistry and is a joy to watch.
Also love him in If You Wish Upon Me and Warrior Baek Dong -soo
I'm trying to pace myself and not watch all of his dramas at once. Still to watch If you wish upon me and Melting me softly. Looking forward to his new one this year.
His performance in Empress Ki was amazing too!! Definitely one of my fave actors
Any drama with Lee Je hoon, he's such a good actor with a great range. He was in
Move to Heaven
Taxi driver
Tomorrow with You
Signal
Also check out the acting in " It's Okay that's Love" and " Flower of Evil". Everybody brought their A game and it was phenomenal.👌
Another great acting performance was Seo In Guk in "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes". His performance was the best part of that show, I was completely enchanted. His portrayal of the daredevil male lead had me hooked from beginning to end.
plus one It's Okay, That's Love both FL & ML are great... but 100% the ML Zo In-sung was seriously one of the best performances I have ever seen - not that I am any expert or have seen that many kdramas/movies/shows in general, but he made me believe all of his scenes.
His character struggles emotionally at times, and you can totally tell when he is 'sick' and when he's not... and the OST just amplifies his acting even more... I just finished this drama and I am having a hard time leaving it behind.
And agree the supporting cast brings their A games as well. And the writing is very well done for what it was trying to achieve, imho. It made a very hard topic 'light' and digestible while conveying a very real message of there is nothing wrong with mental disorders, and everyone deserves to be loved.
I love Lee Sun-kyun in My Mister. The entire cast is outstanding really.
Absolutely agree. He's also rather wonderful in Coffee Prince.
Park Eun Bin in every drama she’s been, but especially Extraordinary Attorney Woo Young Woo
I second this. I didn’t realize that the king in King’s Affections was Attorney Woo until episode 5, they were so distinct. A brilliant chameleon!
This is the only Ji Chang Wook drama I haven't liked - I gave up after 10 episodes of trying. It was mainly because of the FL though.
Ji Chang Wook!!
Na du
The difference is so huge actually, I have watched KSHs 2 dramas except to that I haven't watched any dramas with the same actors where as I have watched 6 or 7 JCWs dramas and yet to watch another 2 or 3. His dramas are really watchable of course the main point being he's a great actor.
Lee Do Hyun.I love him in 18 again and Good bad mother.
I would say lee do hyun. I had no idea that he was in the glory and i am that kind of a person who watches a kdrama without any context and him appearing came as a shocker to me
Park Seo Jun and Ji Chang-wook before
Now, I'm into Song Kaaaaang
are there any idols who regularly act and release music bc most of the idol-actors i’ve seen only release music or act every once in a while, while mainly focusing on the other career. the only ones that have active careers in both that come to my mind right now are iu and eunwoo
(sorry if this doesn’t make sense english isn’t my first language)
SHINee Minho.
He's been constantly acting and, at the same time, releasing music. This year he actually has been alternating between music and acting jobs.
I also forgot to mention 2PM's Junho and Taecyon. They had a comeback earlier this year after Taecyon's role in Vincenzo. Rn both are acting in dramas with high ratings
I’d also add 2PM’s maknae Chansung! He doesn’t get lead roles like the other two, but he gets steady work.
Also Key had quite a few acting roles before his enlistment mainly in musicals a few dramas and a movie, he’s also brought out 2 solos and multiple singles and it looks like that’s possibly gonna become somewhat of a regular yearly/ bi yearly thing
Onew too, now that I think about it. He's been acting in musicals and dramas (Descendants of the sun, for example)
btob's sungjae was in like every drama at one point I swear and also was in btob releasing music /doing performances at the same time
lowkey maybe jinyoung pre got7 leaving jyp (drop that album now my dude please)
I was on the fence about mentioning Sungjae.
Coz he did balance regular acting & music releases until Goblin (end 2016). But he took a long-ish break from acting to focus on BtoB activities & his next drama was in 2020 (Mystic Pop up bar).
Then he enlisted, so we'll need to see how active he will be in both fields in 2022. He does have a drama (Golden Spoon) planned & there's a BtoB album currently in the works though.
In fact, the BtoB member with more acting roles in the past 5 years is probably Minhyuk. He does more web dramas & supporting roles, which is why many might not be aware of them
D.O . Movies, solo music, EXO.
SF9 in general. Not just Rowoon, but multiple members are in web dramas or supporting roles in tv dramas afaik.
Don't forget they also do musical theatre.
I thought OP was only asking about acting in dramas/movies... Otherwise, there's a whole bunch of idols I could suggest who juggle musicals & idol work
i think sf9 is the only group with all members that are active in both fields? can't recall currently if there are any other groups with all members that are active in both acting and music
Not currently, but there was a period where at least half of SNSD was going between promoting their latest hit and filming dramas.
