Lenovo BIOS Update Process

TL;DR

  • Ensure your device is plugged in before starting the update.
  • Use Lenovo's tools like Lenovo Vantage or System Update for a smoother experience.
  • If issues arise, consider BIOS recovery options.

Preparation and Execution

Before initiating a BIOS update on a Lenovo device, it's crucial to ensure that the device is plugged into a power source. This prevents interruptions during the update process, which could lead to system errors or failures [1:10]. Lenovo typically releases updates through Windows applications, requiring manual installation [1]. For users utilizing bootloaders like grub, adjustments may be necessary to maintain compatibility after updates [1:5].

Common Issues and Solutions

Some users have reported their systems freezing on a black screen during BIOS updates, necessitating a hard shutdown to proceed [1:1]. If a laptop fails to boot post-update, a BIOS recovery using a USB with the BIOS file can be attempted [3:1]. Another method involves disconnecting the battery, RAM, and BIOS battery, pressing the power button for a minute, then reconnecting everything and restarting [3:2].

Using Lenovo Tools

Lenovo provides several tools for managing updates, such as Lenovo Vantage and System Update. These tools are designed to streamline the update process, although they might occasionally lag behind the website's update list [5:2]. It's generally recommended to rely on these tools unless there's a specific reason to manually download updates from the website [5:1].

Troubleshooting Long Update Times

If a BIOS update takes excessively long (e.g., more than 10 minutes), it may be hung up somewhere in the process [4:1]. In such cases, shutting down the device by holding the power button until it turns off is advised. Upon restart, the system may automatically enter repair mode to check for errors [4:4].

Enterprise Management

For enterprise environments, modern BIOS management solutions can facilitate updates during task sequences, ensuring all devices are kept current [2:1]. Resources such as Lenovo's enterprise support forum and blog posts on dynamic BIOS updates can provide additional guidance [2:2][2:3].

ORIGINAL POST

Bringing this pots back ...

Hey y'all. Kind of a Hot topic around here are the BIOS updates for the Legion Go. Sun Spirit of good information I figured I'd share some.

The BIOS updates on the go were typically launched from Windows application manually until now. That application it's various iterations checks to see if you're plugged in, very important, it checks to see if the bios is an earlier version also very important because there's a setting in the bios that can prevent you from installing an old version on accident.

If you pass those checks then it will likely start the process. One of the first things it will do is reboot your Go.

Once it reboots, you should see the normal Legion startup like when you first power on the device, but then it will quickly switch to a progress bar. That progress bar once complete but once again reboot your Go.

Here's the important part!

During this phase of the update it's likely updating parts that would prevent them from displaying anything on the screen so as your Go boots up after the progress bar reboots it you will have a black screen and a red power button do not touch it. It will stay on this black screen for anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes maybe. Then it will reboot again.

Now at this point I don't have any idea what the internals are doing but it may repeat the progress bar and black screen one to five times I once had my go reboot a total of seven times during a bios update process.

The important part is leave it alone let it do its thing. I believe the multiple boots are when it updates different pieces internally that it can't do all at once.

Literally the best thing to do with a bios update starts is wait until you get to that Windows login screen or Windows desktop depending on your settings. I've seen people say oh it stayed on a black screen for so long I went ahead and power cycled bad thing you interrupted the process now you can be in an unknown state you might have a bios update but controller updates that aren't right for that bios, I know I don't mean the game controllers I mean control chips on the board.

Until recently the BIOS updates were an at-will process you had to choose to do it. That's not the case anymore there is a very valid possibility that Windows update will drop a new bios on your machine this is why I posted this so you all know the process you know what's happening and don't panic and for God's sake don't reboot your machine let it handle it.

Whenever you see that progress bar understand a bios update is coming it may not be a full software update it's possible you could just be something triggered the system writes during a boot process but once you see that progress bar do nothing until you see the window screen again. I know it makes people anxious but you've got to be patient for this stuff I know a lot of you live in countries other than the US where having RMA go is a lot harder.

DISCLAIMER: I do not work for Lenovo I have no more insight into the actual steps it's performing during these bios updates other than what my 30 years of it knowledge has shown me. I just wanted people to be aware they should not be interrupting this process because I've seen several people come into the discord having soft bricked their device.

If you have any questions ask.

Also, every time there is a BIOS update and you have a dual boot of steamos and windows, you can no longer boot Steamos. It has happened twice to me in the last 2 weeks.

It's going to depend on how you're set up. If you're just using a grub bootloader yep.

If you get refind ( https://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/ ) up and running following something like one of deckwizards guides, the bios updates shouldn't affect you.

Even if it does you just go into the BIOS reset the order on your drives so that the refined EFI partition is first and you're fixed, would take about 10-15 seconds. If you got the face you can do multiple Os. Then you have this nice selection screen that you get to customize like I did.

Ill try installing it this way later today. Thank you so much! I've been setting it up as a grub bootloader so this way seems better now that these BIOS updates are pushed out.

For some of us installing bios update system freezes on black screen. Requires hard shut down. Then power on. Bios install gets going and finishes. I have first batch LeGo though. Always been like that. Even Windows Updates sometimes requires hard power off to get it going as well. Otherwise it will sit on blank screen for hour and nothing happening.

As precaution i’ll say only force restart if device remains in black screen longer than 30 min.

I thought only mine does that. Mine won't restart at all in win11. Shutdown works though, and that's how I do a manual restart, Shutdown and power back on.

Come to say, it will download the update then turn off. I panicked as it says leave it etc. It didnt turn back on because it was off. I then pressed the power button and it comes back on to the legion screen and installing bar. When finished this step it will slowly reboot into windows as normal

BIOS update for Lenovo T470 - Task Sequence

Posted by wahealey · in r/SCCM · 7 years ago

Hi Guys

Has anybody successfully managed to update the BIOS for a Lenovo T470 during OSD? I am not an expert at all with SCCM as I have to just picked up responsibility to keep builds up to date with drivers etc.

I have created a package and tried various commands and also tried executing via a program. I have placed this after the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr sequence.

Lenovo page did suggest that the update has to be run from the laptop HDD, so I would need to copy it and execute via the TS?? Does that sound correct, not sure how to do that if so!

If anybody can give me some pointers would be much appreciated! I won't be able to do this via windows PE.

I remember going down this rabbit hole a while back. One thing you'll figure out, and which doesnt seem to be documented anywhere, is that Lenovo's WINUPTP utility for BIOS upgrades on their ThinkPad devices requires .NET.

Add the WinPE-NetFx component to your boot image, and make sure you are using the WINUPTP file for your architecture (WINUPTP64.exe for 64bit). You can execute it simply with "-s". A successful staging of the update will have a return code of "1", so add that to your step. Then force a reboot to finish applying.

How long should BIOS update take?

Posted by SenchaLeaf · in r/Lenovo · 3 years ago

My Aunt has a lenovo thinkpad she got from my cousin, and she's asking me about the BIOS update, because a pop up appeared and urged her to update, but then it's been staying in a weird condition: screen turned off, fan blasting fast, hot, power button flashing slowly, capslock button light stayed on.

I wonder if it's updating BIOS or error, because it's been more than three hours, according to my aunt

3 hrs? That's way too long. It's hung up somewhere in the process, could posdibly damage the laptop to be in that state for too long.

Last time I updated bios, i think it took less than 10 mins.

Ok, I got it restarted somehow. I turned it off so it cools down, but now it has two vertical lines through the screen...

FeelingHardUp · 3 years ago

Try changing display settings - resolution - to something else, then back again. If that doesn't fix the lines, you may have to roll back to a "restore point" or factory reset it.

I'd try a few reboots before trying the later options. Hopefully it's not hardware failure and can be an easy fix.

1 upvotes on reddit
SenchaLeaf · OP · 3 years ago

Is there anything that I can do then?

1 upvotes on reddit
FeelingHardUp · 3 years ago

I'd shut it down (hold power button until it shuts off). It will probably do a repair or safe boot automatically next time its turned on - to check for errors.

It may have said some warning like "Don't turn off pc during this process" But It's not usable in the state its in now, so I don't see an alternative option.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. If Lenovo Vantage doesn't show any pending updates, it's generally recommended to wait and not manually update using the website unless you have a specific reason to believe there are updates missing. Lenovo Vantage is designed to handle updates, and its database might simply be lagging slightly behind the website's update list. Hope this helps. -Kate_Lenovo

Kate makes a good point. You don’t update a driver just because there is a new one. Same with Bios updates. If you need it go ahead, but if everything is working leave it be. Lenovo does a pretty good job at giving you a working machine from the factory.

The rule I go by is - If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. 😉

T14s gen 3 BIOS update problem

Posted by GaijinTanuki · in r/thinkpad · 3 months ago

I just got a second hand T14s gen 3 and am trying to update the bios.

msinfo32 reports the BIOS Version/Date as: N3CET13W (0.13), 11/3/2021

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds557719-bios-update-utility-bootable-cd-for-windows-11-10-64-bit-thinkpad-t14s-gen-3-type-21br-21bs-x13-gen-3-type-21bn-21bq
Lists the earliest BIOS update as N3CET43W 1.24 2022/06/03 Initial Release…

I have tried the earliest and latest exe BIOS update in Win11. Each time I am alerted:
Flash error
Failed to verify secure flash image
The utility process has not completed

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong or what is going on?

There are a lot of vulnerability fixes listed in the change logs linked from that page marked important. Is it normal to have a BIOS erlier than the one listed as Initial release on the Lenovo download page?

msinfo32 lists the System Model as: 21BSS28900 and System SKU as: LENOVO_MT_21BS_BU_Think_FM_ThinkPad T14s Gen 3

I think you were correct even though the Lenovo site recognised the serial number.

The CPU identifies as "Genuine Intel(R) 0000".

I tried to F9 to reset the bios to a good state and now it just blue screens when trying to boot - both the internal OS and when I try a Windows install USB. I can't boot an live Linux USB either.

It just freezes until I hard reset whenever I try to boot it.

Hmm interesting. Is the serial# on bios the same as one written on the bottom? Perhaps someone replaced the board with an ES one.

Do not update your BIOS, EVER.

Posted by [deleted] · in r/LenovoLegion · 3 years ago

I had issues with my keyboard on my Lenovo Legion 5-15ARH05H and I contacted Lenovo support about it, they asked me to update my bios so I got it from the BIOS tab in the products page and I installed it, nothing happened in the first few days but later I started seeing my computer BSOD, randomly turn off and finally my Computer got bricked today. I've tried everything to just get past the boost screen, automatic repair doesn't work, I can't access the BIOS cus my keyboard still doesn't respond, my external keyboard is in Spanish so I can't access it either. I tried to reset windows 10 but both options of resetting windows 10 didn't work and it would say it couldn't be successfully resettled, finally I went to have a look online and found our Lenovo themselves released a BIOS Bricker. My situation is much worse because my computer was bought in Hong Kong and now I live in Ecuador where I can't get it fixed, so if I want to get it fixed I need to go back to Hong Kong. I'm basically fucked. Thanks Lenovo, you fucking rats.

Edit: BIOS Update was FSCN24WW, The Keyboard is not only in Spanish but it's also a Logitech K400, so all the Function keys (F1-F12) don't work along with accessing the BIOS.

It is a bit ridiculous to come with such claim. There are plenty of inexperienced users that will blindly follow you. And you are clearly not experienced.

First you mention that your laptop already was having issues without the update. To me it just sounds like an inexperienced person that echoes what others are saying without the details.

Second, you don't mention any BIOS/UEFI version. Sure the new update might give you BSODs but you are talking about a so-called complete full brick or "BIOS bricker". In that case, the whole laptop will not even see anything Windows related.

Third, even when people upgrade. The BIOS/UEFI can be downgraded.

Fourth, it is bad practice not to update if there are critical vulnerability patches. Your laptop could be compromised by attackers. But there is one side note here, of course you do not update YET if there are problems. You wait until the next version when things DO work. Thats the difference between NEVER updating, and updating when things DO work.

Thats it folks.

I was honestly sure than when OEM releases update this always means its to make your device better. Reading comments and complaints for the past week or so Im really glad I dont have so many issues. I updated BIOS on my Legion 5 Pro almost 2 weeks ago and I just had some problems with fans kicking in too often and being very loud + hybrid mode sometimes not working but otherwise performance is perfect and everything is fine. Imagine buying laptop for 1900 euro with your hard earned money just to have to send i back because Lenovo cannot properly make an update.

Keeping Lenovo BIOS updated

Posted by Solid_Flamingo109 · in r/Intune · 3 months ago

Hi All,

Having issues with Keeping Lenovo Laptop BIOS updated. We have Windows Update for other Laptops (Dells) and this works fine but for Lenovos, it doesn't seem to work.

Does not pick up the BIOS Updates, even Manual review.

We have tried Commercial Vantage, which works great on Drivers but BIOS install is not silent, requires user intervention and this is deemed unacceptable.

We have tried our own script, that works great, but gets flagged by Security so its a no go.

Basically, What is everyone else doing? We need BIOS updates for an accreditation so it cant be just us with this issue?

Thanks all in advance

There are ADMX policies for Vantage, they don't seem to be able to be imported into Intune but here is a partial extract of my regkey (reddit won't let me post it whole) used to configure Vantage, you select if to include BIOS:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Lenovo\Commercial Vantage]

"SystemUpdateFilter"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.critical.application"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.critical.driver"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.critical.BIOS"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.critical.firmware"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.critical.others"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.recommended.application"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.recommended.driver"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.recommended.BIOS"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.recommended.firmware"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.recommended.others"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.optional.application"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.optional.driver"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.optional.BIOS"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.optional.firmware"=dword:00000001

"SystemUpdateFilter.optional.others"=dword:00000001

Users receive a prompt to install the BIOS update, there are options to allow users to defer x times for x minutes. You can set up a full set of configurations and then test if the BIOS update is enforced when the defer limit is exceeded.

Thank you.

We have all the ADMX templates in and they seem to work fine.

That problem being, is when it asks for a BIOS update (Which I think is Fine)

it then opens the Extractor and asks Users Click Next, Then Progress bar etc.

>BIOS install is not silent, requires user intervention and this is deemed unacceptable.

Funny, we deemed the opposite to be unacceptable.

What is the reasoning, not wanting to bother users, or worrying they might not complete the update? If it's the latter, that's what compliance policies are for.

Mix of things. Its the way it shows, I'm happy for a Popup saying this install is happening, please Restart, Like Windows Updates. But this BIOS goes through the extraction asking Users to click next.

We have a vast array of Computer Literacy with many being at the lower end.

I am not in an environment that has need for this yet but this is my dream or when I run out of more pressing projects.

Look to leverage Lenovo Thin Installer installed through intune and/or chocolatey/winget. It has no major dependencies and is cli /silent as needed.

Intent was to have this as part of the device onboarding as a oneshot and slowly add recurring firmware patching schedule (through intune / RMM).

Thanks for that,

We are currently looking into Thin Installer. Went into a rabbit hole with Lenovo Repository and think we over complicated it. Going to have another look today.

This works great, updates all my drivers/FW/BIOS at autopilot or pre-provisioning: https://blog.lenovocdrt.com/autopilot--thin-installer--current-driversbiosfirmware

Also having Lenovo devices in a few months. I have a Running naming script but that's It. If you have a a Vantage solution, do share please?

As ak47uk above says, we have ADMX Policy for the Commercial Vantage Software. Vantage pushed out in a WIN32 app (Although there is a store app as well)

Works great to a degree, Scheduled updates, checks drivers etc, but its just the BIOS thing asking Users which is causing issues.

I've been on latest on my 15ACH7H GKCN59WW for a month now and have had no issues so far.

I'm one of those people who regularly check for updates and install the updates asap.

Whenever I see new bios I update. Never had a problem.

Thats because you use your laptop normally and you dont do silly experiments with it which will in the end grant you 1-2 more frames in games…

I guarantee you most of the people having issues after BIOS updates were doind shady stuff to it…

That's not true. Lenovo has a long history of bad BIOS files and that's the fact. For example 3 or 4 versions after v50 for Legions 2021 was faulty and full of issues. That's just 1 example.... If you don't find anything useful in nfo file regarding the BIOS changes don't even try to install it, it's not worth it, unless you have a time to be a beta tester for them.

Usually there is no good reason to update firmware/bios if you don't have any hardware comparability issues or you need to enable a new feature.

No, I wouldn't recommend any of them.

Although, if you are having a system issue, updating the BIOS could help fix said issue. But it depends, and I would not update otherwise.

I would only update the BIOS I never understood why people said not to if "nothing's broken". It may not give you any tangible performance improvements but it will always keep you more secure and you never know it COULD give you noticeable benefits.

lenovo bios update process

Here’s a step-by-step guide for updating the BIOS on a Lenovo device:

  1. Identify Your Model:

    • Determine the exact model of your Lenovo device. You can find this information on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop or in the system settings.
  2. Check Current BIOS Version:

    • Press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and hit Enter. Look for the BIOS version/date in the System Information window.
  3. Visit Lenovo Support:

    • Go to the Lenovo Support website.
    • Enter your device model in the search bar or navigate to it through the product categories.
  4. Download the BIOS Update:

    • Find the BIOS section under the Drivers & Software tab.
    • Download the latest BIOS update file. Ensure it matches your operating system.
  5. Prepare for Update:

    • Back up important data. BIOS updates are generally safe, but it’s always good to have a backup.
    • Ensure your laptop is plugged into a power source to prevent it from shutting down during the update.
  6. Run the Update:

    • Close all applications.
    • Locate the downloaded BIOS update file and run it. Follow the on-screen instructions.
    • The system may restart several times during the process.
  7. Access BIOS Settings (if needed):

    • After the update, you can access BIOS settings by pressing F1, F2, or Delete (depending on your model) during startup.
  8. Verify the Update:

    • After the update, check the BIOS version again using the msinfo32 method to ensure the update was successful.

Important Notes:

  • Do Not Interrupt: Avoid turning off your device during the update process, as this can corrupt the BIOS.
  • Read Release Notes: Check the release notes for the BIOS update to understand what changes or fixes are included.

Recommendation: Only update the BIOS if necessary (e.g., for hardware compatibility or critical fixes). If your system is running smoothly, it may not be essential to update.
