TL;DR Try a PRAM reset, check the display cable connection, and consider external solutions like using another monitor or device for backup.
PRAM/NVRAM Reset
One of the first troubleshooting steps you can try is resetting the PRAM (or NVRAM). This process involves shutting down your MacBook, then pressing the power button while holding down the Option (⌥), Command (⌘), P, and R keys simultaneously for about 20 seconds [1:1]. This can sometimes resolve display issues by resetting certain system settings.
Hardware Inspection
The issue may be related to hardware problems such as a loose or broken ribbon cable connecting the display to the motherboard. If you're comfortable with hardware, you might consider opening the back of the MacBook to inspect the display cable [2:2]. However, if you're not experienced with hardware repairs, it might be best to consult a professional technician.
External Display Solutions
Connecting your MacBook to an external monitor can help determine whether the issue is with the internal display or something more serious. If the external display works, it's likely that the internal screen or its connections are faulty [2:1],
[3:1]. Using an external keyboard and mouse can allow you to operate your MacBook even when the internal display isn't functioning.
Potential Causes and Repairs
The problem could stem from a failed display or a more serious issue with the main logic board [5:2]. If the display occasionally works after force restarting, this suggests a potential intermittent hardware fault
[5]. Repair costs can be high, so evaluating whether a repair or replacement is more cost-effective is important
[5:1].
Backup and Data Recovery
If you need to back up your data urgently, consider using an external monitor or another Mac to access your files [3]. It's crucial to ensure your data is backed up regularly to avoid loss in situations like these.
My MacBook screen went completely black, but my keyboard is still lighting up. I’ve seen others with similar issues, but their screens still seem lit, even though it’s black, while mine has absolutely no light. I tried plugging it in to an external screen, and it looks good over there. The only issue is that since I so t have a mouse connected or an external keyboard, I’m unable to do anything on the external screen since my MacBook has to remain closed. Sorry if any of this sounds confusing, but I’m not a big computer person, so I don’t really know how to properly explain what I’m seeing. If anyone has any ideas on what can help, that would be greatly appreciated!
Very little if any help can be provided if we don't have an idea of what specific machine you're using.
Oh this happened to me last week, I fixed it simply by turning it off, then a pram reset.. MacBook's PRAM (or NVRAM), first shut down your Mac. Then, press the power button and immediately hold down the Option (⌥), Command (⌘), P, and R keys simultaneously. Release these keys after about 20 seconds
Hey everyone,
I woke up a couple of weeks ago to my 2020 MacBook having a black screen. It randomly came back on, but now it’s black again. The laptop still works when connected to an external display, but the built-in screen stays completely black.
I’m a broke final-year student, so I really need this laptop to work. Does anyone know what might be wrong or if there’s a fix I can try before taking it in for repair?
Any help would be massively appreciated!
Looks like one the 2 issues:
The display has died, it's okay as long as the motherboard is fine, which in this case, motherboard is working, because external display is working fine.
Ribbon cable connection of the display to motherboard has broken or is loose.
If you're comfortable with hardware and confident enough, just open the back of the macbook and see the display cable carefully. Atleast you'll be able to diagnose the issue.
Did you try increasing the brightness?
I did a screen replacement on one of those. I don't recommend it if you have little or no experience especially.
screen replacements are REALLY expensive, get a very cheap mid-2012 MacBook Pro as a backup option for €100-€200 ish
plug it into another mac and it will work if its not the screen.
Hi everyone,
Yesterday my MacBook Pro (2022) was working fine. Now my screen is completely black, I connected it to a external monitor and it was working ok but now it’s showing only a backlight. Charges fine, Keyboard is lit and I can hear when the MacBook turns on.
Any advice?
I didn’t back it up because im stupid. I just need to somehow turn it on and back it up so I can get a new one
Thanks
Caps key led toggle on/off? If yes, then yes, the unit is booting. External HDMI monitor is not working? Test with another known good USB-C to HDMI dongle - select one with solid ratings and hopefully are not fake reviews. Amazon is the fall back plan but they do sell a lot of junk and non-compliant products. Sounds to me that your lid angle sensor is not working properly and unit needs to be calibrated. If there was no abuse to the unit, the backlight should work ok. Essentially, when the lid is closed, the backlight is requested to power off to save on energy / battery drain. At this time, the sensor believes the lid is closed. That is my quick take on the situation.
Hi, So I took my macbook in for repair and apparently its dead and theres no power. They want to charge me for a motherboard replacement. One day it just stopped turning on. It recognises when magsafe is plugged in and chimes, when you press the power button it plays the startup dong but it won’t actually boot up further than there. I was wondering if there was any fix for this over motherboard replacement because they didn’t even run any diagnosis. They just tried the power button and went, well you’ll have to pay.
Thanks, I can provide any other details
Seems like it's getting power and turning on but there's no video. If anything, it would seem more like it needs a display than a logic board.
But, if it's a 2018 or later model, you can also try to revive the firmware. Sometimes that fixes video or power issues.
For context, I have a 2021 M1 MacBook Pro.
When I turn on my MacBook, the keyboard lights up, and I can toggle caps lock, but the screen is black. Here’s what’s weird: if I repeatedly force restart by pressing and holding the power button, I can occasionally get it to work perfectly, but if the display goes to sleep at any point after that, I’m back to square one. The computer is in excellent condition — no dents, scratches, water damage, etc. — and was backed up less than a week ago. The problem began yesterday evening following totally normal usage, and I hadn’t downloaded anything, updated it, or even moved it to another room immediately preceding the issue. It’s currently running OS 15.4.1.
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
Any suggestions? I’d be willing to spend money on a repair, but only if I could be certain that it would actually fix the issue.
It's certainly a hardware fault. I could be the display or it could be the GPU/mainboard.
If no video outputs to an external display, the problem is most likely the Main Logic board.
Thanks for the help — that’s what I’m leaning towards. Given the high cost of repair, though, I think I may have to replace it. Unbelievably irritating.
Hi there,
Sorry if this has been posted before or should be in another subreddit but i've had zero luck so far.
Trying to fix my girlfriends MacBook Pro,
So basically,
When i turn on the MacBook Pro, it will make the start up sound and until i press the buttons or the power button it will then light up all the buttons and even the screen to an extent, however nothing else happens, the screen is still black.
I've looked at so many suggestions online such as the PRAM attempt, turning up the brightness, attempting to enter the password and hitting enter, pressing shift control option and power etc.
Has anyone else encountered these problems and found a solution?
I'd really appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks :)
A first step would be to find out if it's the screen itself that's screwed up, or something else preventing it from starting.
Power it on and leave it for a couple minutes. Then, check:
That'll help you figure out if it's a simple screen replacement, or something more along the lines of RAM, logic board, etc.
Hey, Thanks for the suggestions, yeah I tried the above, caps lock key light worked and it makes sounds etc I'm not the most technical but it does seem like everything works ok just not the screen, and you can see the faintest of red outlines in the screen itself.
I might leave it with a tech repair guy close to my area but I'm hoping it won't cost an arm and a leg to fix!
If it makes the volume change sound (#4 in my post), then it's almost certainly just the screen. Could be anywhere from a loose flex cable to a screen replacement. Best of luck.
Already tried to boot into the recovery mode?
Yeah tried that too before the screen comes on but it didn't do anything!
Could be that one of the screen connections is not making contact. If nothing works that would be the first thing I would test.
Hi there, I know this is an old post, but this has happened to me, many times before. Please read this entire comment before taking any action.
So heres my story: one day I open up my very expensive and very new macbook pro (2015) (yes I know this comment is posted in 2018 but the first time I encountered this problem was late 2016 or early 2017). Shockingly, the screen was completely black and not lighting up WHATSOEVER! everything else was functioning, lights on the keyboard, sound on the computer, etc. I tried everything, like you. I tried resetting RAM and all that other stuff. I tried booting in safe mode. I literally tried everything thats suggested on the internet, whether through apple or other sites (such as reddit).
Heres what I have to say: there is only ONE solution that actually solved my problem. But before I tell you, I must say this, this solution that DID WORK FOR ME AND YES IT SOLVED MY PROBLEM, will void any warranty or applecare insurance that you may have. So if you have applecare or a factory warranty or ANYTHING like that, please take your computer into a store and have a licensed professional look at your product. Anyways, I do not have applecare or any factory warranty or anything like that. But heres how I solved my problem: i took the back off of my computer (MacBook Pro 2015, 13 inch) and disconnected the battery. Leave it disconnected for about 1 minute or so, then reconnect the battery.
Look, I cant guarantee this will solve your problem, but it solved my problem. Literally NOTHING else on the internet would work. But somewhere down the line I read about disconnecting the battery from the computer, and it worked for me. This is literally the only thing that solved my problem. After talking to an apple "professional," I was told that the issues was with the logic board. After only 1.5 years, my computers logic board failed! What a surprise. But in a nutshell, the way I solved my problem was simply disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it. I've had this problem about 3 times in the last 2 or 3 years and the solution I provided has worked every time.
Again, I cant guarantee that this will solve your problem, but if all else fails, give this a try (but again, do not do this if you have a factory warranty or insurance because disconnecting the battery or even removing the back cover will likely void whatever warranty/insurance you have).
EDIT: I've tried restarting in recovery mode as well, DOESNT WORK. Using an external monitor DOES WORK. I've connected an HDMI cable from my laptop to my TV and yes, it does work. I get the screen from my computer on my TV. but that's only a temporary solution. Again, literally the only solution I found on the ENTIRE INTERNET was disconnecting the battery, leaving it for about a minute or 2, then reconnecting it. Again, this will void whatever warranty you may have, but with me, I didnt have any warranty, so this was better than paying hundreds of dollars to Apple to fix a hardware problem that my dad helped me fix in 10 minutes ;). Good luck man, hopefully you read this comment before spending hundreds on Apple to fix your issue. I TRUELY HOPE my comment can help at least one person out there. Because I know what it's like to drop about $1000 on a new laptop and not have the funds to have it repaired, so I hope what I said can help someone out there in need.
Hey there, I actually ended up sending it off to a local IT repair guy, It was the video chip needed replaced, wasn't too expensive compared to leaving it with Apple, £95 in total, Thanks anyway :)
I am in need. Your comment has been extremely helpful! I appreciate you taking the time to help others! Mahatma Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world." Seems you're living that advice.
Thanks again,
Shmyles
Can you use an external monitor?
Just press the power for a while for force restart? I seems to encounter the same problem and solved it by force restart
Yep tried that also, Thanks anyway

I bought this macbook from a pawnshop in December and have not had any problems with it until now. It was working just fine yesterday and when I tried to open it again the screen would not show anything but it would boot up with sounds and everything. I can plug in my graphics display tablet to use the mousepad and all that but nothing has helped the retina display. Charges and is fully charged. Help?
sounds like backlight is not lighting up. Might be a simple fix in a normal repair shop. Apple service might ask you to buy new pc so try in a well rated repair shop
yeah i also think thats the problem. will be calling a shop tomorrow to see what they tell me. thanks!
My parents got me a MacBook Air and I don’t think I was as careful with it before this happened as there was a line down it meaning the screen was damaged but ever since seeing that I was extra careful and it hardly left my desk, then more lines appeared and it started glitching and eventually the screen just wouldn’t turn on it’s like my mac turns on but not the screen. I only got it a couple months ago and my parents will be furious. There is not one scratch and I’m confused because I didn’t drop it or anything. I looked it up and and all it said was to press and hold command or smth but that’s not what this is.
Take it to the genius bar if there's one nearby and you should be able to get it fixed up for free if there's no water damage and you didn't crack the screen physically.
Thank you!
I have a MacBook Air M2, and while I was using it normally, the screen suddenly went completely black. The keyboard still lights up, and when I connect it to an external monitor, everything works fine
I’ve tried: • Force restarting • Adjusting brightness • Booting into Recovery Mode • Resetting SMC and NVRAM • DFU restore (with help from Apple)
Even after a DFU restore at the Apple Store, the screen stayed black. But without any in-depth diagnostics or opening up the device, they told me I need to replace the entire screen, which is pretty expensive
There’s been no physical damage, no drops, no water spill. Just suddenly went black.
Would appreciate any suggestions or similar experiences
Bro there is no work around I just came here to ask for help.
I gave my lap to service centre two days back and man they're charging literally 50% of what was the amount I paid to buy this. And they are stating it's display issue while I'm sure it's not cuz have spoken to lot of people here who owns M chip old ones
I think they're phasing out older ones I believe. Don't fall for the hardware issue
Then what should i do should i invest in fixing or move on and buy new one(definitely not apple this time)
I'm moving man. But unfortunately I'm gonna stick with apple only cuz this was best suited for my works
Bro same thing just happened to my M1 Air. I was watching YouTube and then I closed the lid normally and after half an hour I opened it and the screen was blank except only backlight is there and all the buttons are working normally. I tried many troubleshooting but nothing is working for me

you have just performed "half/split" troubleshooting.
now you know the problem lies between the display cable connection and computer.
the cable could simply be loose, cracked or the display has gone bad.
i'm not familiar enough with this model to know what is most common.
macbooks usually need someone familiar to service .
the cable is $20, the screen assembly is $450 from ifixit dot com .
MacBook screen is black but keyboard lights up
Here are some key considerations and troubleshooting steps:
Check Power Connection: Ensure your MacBook is charged. Connect it to a power source and wait a few minutes before trying to turn it on again.
Force Restart: Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds to force a restart. This can sometimes resolve temporary glitches.
Adjust Brightness: If the screen is black, try adjusting the brightness using the keyboard keys (F1 and F2) to see if the display is simply dimmed.
Reset NVRAM/PRAM:
Reset SMC (System Management Controller):
External Display Test: If possible, connect your MacBook to an external monitor. If the external display works, the issue may be with your MacBook's screen.
Check for Hardware Issues: If none of the above steps work, there may be a hardware issue, such as a faulty display or logic board. In this case, contacting Apple Support or visiting an Apple Store for diagnostics is recommended.
Recommendation: Start with the simpler troubleshooting steps (power connection, force restart, brightness adjustment) before moving on to resets and external display tests. If the problem persists, professional help may be necessary to avoid further damage.
