ORIGINAL POST

Okay but can we just take a sec to appreciate how rare it is for a book adaptation to actually feel like the words came alive?? Most of the time we’re left heartbroken because the movie/show butchers everything we loved on paper.

But with The Summer I Turned Pretty… OMG. Jenny Han really gave us book girlies the ultimate gift. It makes me giddy, it gives me butterflies, it’s like reading the book but instead it’s actually alive and playing out right in front of my eyes. The vibes, the feelings, the little details they just hit.

This is the kind of adaptation that reminds you why you fell in love with reading in the first place 🄹

I just read the first book and was impressed to see how they took this chance not only to make the world created in the books come alive, but also expand it. It was a really good balance of following exactly the core of the story and what already worked and adding more.

I was not a fan of S2 - all the changes just don’t make sense, especially now that I’m watching S3 and they’re sticking closer to the books - but S1 and S3 so far have been amazing

I fully agree. I’ve seen some posts and comments where people are saying there have been so many changes from the books to the tv show and it is utterly perplexing to me. I feel like this adaptation is one of the truest to the original source material I’ve ever seen. Almost nothing has been taken out. The vast majority of changes have just been additions. But what’s beautiful is that the changes would have been added by the author, Jenny Han, so the changes are all enhancements that she wishes she had been able to include in the books. The fact that we’re getting some of the most iconic scenes verbatim from the books is absolutely a dream come true. And don’t even get me started on how Chris Briney IS Conrad. The cast is killing it!

I just want to share my new summer-romance story. Inspired by The Summer I Turned Pretty.

Here’s the short blurb: That summer, Amelia thought it was just another move. But Cove Beach feels different—like home. Between two boys and a summer that could change everything, she has to figure out where she belongs… and who she’s willing to risk her heart on.

you can read it FOR FREE on wattpad

I’m an aspiring writer, so any comments, feedback, or even just a read would mean the world to me. 🌸

I’ve been reading and commenting on this since day one! I’ve reread it multiple times, especially whenever we run low on new stories. This author has been so generous with her talent and I’ll be sad to see it end, but I’m super excited for the final chapters too. I love it so much that I wish I had it in paper book form to add to my collection šŸ˜ŠšŸ’•. At least it’s bookmarked online šŸ˜‰

Personally I can get into a YA novel and I am in my late 20s, but could not stand these. Belly was infuriating. I also didnt feel chemistry with her and either of the romantic interests. Not enough substance for me. Still read them all though lol

It's still worth the read though because it has some good themes. I just absolutely hated Belly.

This is one of the only times I liked the show better.

I agree with this. Did not care for the lead in the books but I like the show thus far. I like the story as a whole but yikes was Belly annoying as a character in the books. I actually found myself rooting against her because I didn’t want her behavior rewarded. I did the audiobook and the reader did not help the character.

I read them after watching the show, the first two were mediocre at best. I’d consider the last book a ā€œjumping the sharkā€ experience. Definitely avoid the last one if you care about either character growth or plot development. It’s a regression of both.

"The Summer I Turned Pretty" is a coming-of-age novel by Jenny Han that follows the story of Isabel "Belly" Conklin, a teenage girl who spends her summers at a beach house with her mother and family friends, the Fishers. The narrative explores themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery.

Key Points:

  1. Setting: The story is set in a beach town where Belly has spent her summers since childhood. The beach house holds significant memories and emotions for her.

  2. Love Triangle: Belly finds herself in a complicated love triangle between two brothers, Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher. Conrad is brooding and mysterious, while Jeremiah is more easygoing and friendly.

  3. Personal Growth: Throughout the summer, Belly transitions from a girl into a young woman, grappling with her feelings for both brothers and her evolving identity.

  4. Family Dynamics: The novel also delves into Belly's relationships with her mother and the Fisher family, highlighting the complexities of friendship and familial bonds.

  5. Emotional Themes: The story touches on themes of nostalgia, heartbreak, and the bittersweet nature of growing up, as Belly navigates her feelings and the changes in her relationships.
