What Redditors are Saying

Themes in "The Summer I Turned Pretty"

Self-Discovery and Identity

One of the central themes in "The Summer I Turned Pretty" is self-discovery. The protagonist, Belly, undergoes significant personal growth throughout the story as she navigates her teenage years and begins to understand who she is and what she wants [1:2]. This theme is common in coming-of-age stories, where characters experience pivotal moments that shape their identities.

Love and Relationships

Love is a prominent theme in the series, exploring both romantic and familial relationships. The story delves into the complexities of young love and the emotions that come with it, such as jealousy, heartbreak, and passion [1:1]. The dynamics between Belly and the boys she has grown up with highlight how relationships can evolve over time, reflecting the transition from childhood friendships to more mature connections [2].

Nostalgia and Change

The theme of nostalgia is evident in the way the series captures the essence of a magical teenage summer, filled with memorable experiences and the bittersweet passage of time. Characters reflect on past summers and the changes that have occurred, both within themselves and in their surroundings [2]. This theme resonates with readers who recall their own transformative summers and the impact of those memories.

Freedom and Independence

The desire for freedom and independence is another key theme, as characters seek to assert their autonomy and make their own choices [1:1]. This is often portrayed through the lens of teenage rebellion and the struggle to break free from parental expectations, allowing characters to explore new opportunities and experiences.

Mundanity vs. Novelty

The contrast between the mundane and the novel is explored in the series, highlighting the tension between routine life and the excitement of new experiences [1:3]. This theme underscores the allure of summer as a time for adventure and change, when everyday life is temporarily suspended, and anything seems possible.

Looking for books that feel like the summer I turned pretty. Books that feel like a magical teenage summer, with boys who’ve known you your whole life suddenly seeing you in a different way, suddenly feeling like a main character in your own story.

Call Me By Your Name by Andre Acimen has that teenage summer feeling, but with an adult partner. Might not be everyone's cup of tea but the prose is beautiful and the writing is heartbreakingly good.

“My mom loved this song,” says Conrad and my friends, the song is “Last Nite” by The Strokes — a chilling reminder of my own slow march to the grave. Let’s move on.”

oh, good. I wasn’t the only one who felt old when Conrad said his mom loved the song. lol. I was just slightly younger than Belly when that song came out so it reminds me of early high school.

The official email link came to be at 11:07am.

My boss’s boss asked to have a meeting about an ongoing work project and if I was free at 11am. I was like “🥴 you see, there is this book being released…but I will be in as soon as I order it.” He just laughed at me! 🤣

DAE feel addicted to ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’?

Posted by gorgeousgracie1 · in r/DoesAnybodyElse · 2 years ago

I saw where the second season was out so I rewatched the first season then went right into the second. I am now waiting for the next few episodes to come out. I can’t get my mind off the show. It is so sad and upsetting with the death and breakups. I NEED more though. Like my stomach hurts and I won’t be able to sleep sort of feeling.

Charlize Theron got old and was using magic to look young. The movie was pretty bold of tackling ageism in beauty standards. Like The evil queen knew that the king will replace her with younger woman once she grows old so kills the king

Don't get me wrong I don't think this movie will be that good, I haven't really thought about it at all anyways, with nothing against anyone who likes it because I like my fair share of movies people like to hate on.

I always thought Snow White was about inner beauty myself. Snow White is a good person, she's the "fairest of us all", compared to the Queen who is a bad person. That's it, it helps when she looks good too (not saying she doesn't) but that's not really the point in my opinion.

Besides I think Rachel Zegler pulls off the character well based on trailers, to give the movie some credit.

>I always thought Snow White was about inner beauty myself.

I feel like it was pretty obvious with how the queen herself is pretty fair (if we are to use skin color logic). So the mirror just picked someone whose not only has fair skin but is a good person, unlike the queen whose rotten who tries to kill snow white

Which does get reinforced by how she dresses up as the ugly old evil witch which is how she looks like on the inside

This. Like it kinda spells it out but dense MFers wanna bitch

1 upvotes on reddit
draggingonfeetofclay · 6 months ago

It's also funny, because Gal Gadot is in full clown makeup here and Rachel Zegler has a more toned town, "nude" makeup job. She's even got the camp evil fake eyelashes

A pretty clear bias for fabricated, artificial femininity. Which, I guess isn't evil by itself and people should be allowed to have fun with Barbiecore and the like. But not a standard that anyone has a right to hold female beauty to!

1 upvotes on reddit
Noobodiiy · 6 months ago

No, Why would evil queen even have inner Beauty. It is incredibly concerning if evil queen was benchmark for inner beauty before Snow white
