Self-Discovery and Identity
One of the central themes in "The Summer I Turned Pretty" is self-discovery. The protagonist, Belly, undergoes significant personal growth throughout the story as she navigates her teenage years and begins to understand who she is and what she wants [1:2]. This theme is common in coming-of-age stories, where characters experience pivotal moments that shape their identities.
Love and Relationships
Love is a prominent theme in the series, exploring both romantic and familial relationships. The story delves into the complexities of young love and the emotions that come with it, such as jealousy, heartbreak, and passion [1:1]. The dynamics between Belly and the boys she has grown up with highlight how relationships can evolve over time, reflecting the transition from childhood friendships to more mature connections
[2].
Nostalgia and Change
The theme of nostalgia is evident in the way the series captures the essence of a magical teenage summer, filled with memorable experiences and the bittersweet passage of time. Characters reflect on past summers and the changes that have occurred, both within themselves and in their surroundings [2]. This theme resonates with readers who recall their own transformative summers and the impact of those memories.
Freedom and Independence
The desire for freedom and independence is another key theme, as characters seek to assert their autonomy and make their own choices [1:1]. This is often portrayed through the lens of teenage rebellion and the struggle to break free from parental expectations, allowing characters to explore new opportunities and experiences.
Mundanity vs. Novelty
The contrast between the mundane and the novel is explored in the series, highlighting the tension between routine life and the excitement of new experiences [1:3]. This theme underscores the allure of summer as a time for adventure and change, when everyday life is temporarily suspended, and anything seems possible.
What would you say are the main themes of the story?
Self-Discovery
Mundanity vs novelty and the meaning of love.
Dropping out of school to do underage drinking with hot bitches in the middle of the night is cool and fun
Y'know what, yeah
Freedom, self discovery, identity and love.
Looking for books that feel like the summer I turned pretty. Books that feel like a magical teenage summer, with boys who’ve known you your whole life suddenly seeing you in a different way, suddenly feeling like a main character in your own story.
Sunburn by Chloe Howarth
Anything by Sarah Dessen
I would say specifically, That Summer or Keeping the Moon
Dude yes, Keeping The Moon is the best Sarah Dessen book hands down
Along for the ride by Sarah Dessen was a personal favourite of mine for a summer romance
What Happened To Goodbye came to mind immediately
Call Me By Your Name by Andre Acimen has that teenage summer feeling, but with an adult partner. Might not be everyone's cup of tea but the prose is beautiful and the writing is heartbreakingly good.
YES such a good answer! So summery
every 👏🏽 summer 👏🏽 after 👏🏽 by Carley Fortune 🥹
also i just finished her newest book, one golden summer, and it's also an amazing summer romance but instead of actual teens, it's a 30 year old woman trying to relive her teens. it was sooooo good

Summer Sisters by Judy Bloom (it’s for adults not kids lol).
This is one of my favorite books. So real. So heartbreaking.
I have never watched this show purely because the title gives me the ick.
I binged the whole thing and it's okay. I call it "Gen Z's Dawson's Creek" (also learned they filmed in Wilmington as well)
This made me gasp. Because the scene where dawson's dad...., actually sent me into orbit. I was decades late watching it in uni but istg i never looked back jdkdkdodododdoo some how this is cracking me up.
I also didn't watch Dawson's Creek so I'm pretty sure it's not my thing 😂
it isn't worth it, trust me
THERE IS HOPE!
ONE GAL THAT IS UNTAINTED BY SMUT SHOWS THAT CLUTTER MY SHOW OVERVIEW PAGE!
You're probably single-handedly teaching that algorithm some manners.
^((Thank you so much!))
It's really bad, most of the scenes just feel like you got a bunch of TikTok stars and put them in a room. I love trashy teen shows but this was personally one of the worst teen shows I've seen in recent memory.
greenlit a feature film**
my bad, this is what happens when you walk and type
jenny han singlehandedly keeping wasian actors booked and busy
Team Conrad and his slutty little watch for life
if belly had gone to my school me and my friends would gossip about her every time we met up
Me and my friends are gossiping about her as if she was real. Lol
“My mom loved this song,” says Conrad and my friends, the song is “Last Nite” by The Strokes — a chilling reminder of my own slow march to the grave. Let’s move on.”
oh, good. I wasn’t the only one who felt old when Conrad said his mom loved the song. lol. I was just slightly younger than Belly when that song came out so it reminds me of early high school.
Appreciate this also. I feel like there aren't enough epioside-by-episode reviews aside from Tiktok.
I enjoyed reading this, lol. Thank you!
This Love, The Way I Loved You and Back to December were used incredibly well and even though I was already a big fan of those three songs, the series made me enjoy them even more. Did this happen to anyone else?
Nah not really. Just the same as always
I feel the song placements are a bit off
I really love This Love even before, but hearing it with the TSITP scenes made me enjoy even more too, plus it's Taylor's Version!!
i was only in the queue for one minute before placing the order
good luck everyone! feel free to comment here how long you were waiting for and if you were successful/if it was sold out.
I wish I was actually interested in reading these books because I think it’s one of FairyLoot’s best designed editions this year. The color palette is gorgeous.
I have to wait for general sale :(... hows it looking, is it still available?
I think it'll make the general sale! To All the Boys series that went on sale a couple of weeks ago made it to general and was there for a few days. I did a quick stock check just now for this set and there's about 4300 copies left.
oooh yay thank you!
based on comments, it seems a lot of people passed up on to all the boys for the summer series. that's still quite a bit of stock though, hopefully it does make it to general!
How do you do a stock check?
I decided against it, $$. I’ve not read the books, but loved the movie series.
I was able to add from my account about a minute before 11am EST. The queue wait time was about a minute after that.
The official email link came to be at 11:07am.
My boss’s boss asked to have a meeting about an ongoing work project and if I was free at 11am. I was like “🥴 you see, there is this book being released…but I will be in as soon as I order it.” He just laughed at me! 🤣
This is me constantly with different book releases hahahaha I've started putting them into my planner so I know to schedule around them 😂
That is hilarious! Usually no one bothers me so the fact that out of all the days and then times!!! But I was able to get it fairly quickly and I am excited!
I got my email 8 minutes after and was in queue for about 8 minutes! I'm so happy I got them 🥹
I saw where the second season was out so I rewatched the first season then went right into the second. I am now waiting for the next few episodes to come out. I can’t get my mind off the show. It is so sad and upsetting with the death and breakups. I NEED more though. Like my stomach hurts and I won’t be able to sleep sort of feeling.
Yeah, I was watching it last night. I kept thinking, “why I am I so into this show? It’s not THAT good”. But I do like it!
Might be a bot
I don’t know, feels like you can apply this to every show! Not worthy of a DAE
I personally don’t watch the show but my friend does and she told me there was a Gorillaz song in the newest episode. I checked the soundtrack and New Gold was in the episode!
What show and what episode?
The summer I turned pretty and I think Ep 6
What time?
Ah thanks
Ok

There are no guarantees about how pretty you will end up, unfortunately.
The mirror was a damn liar in the original Snow White & the Wicked MILF as well, ain't no one choosing Snow White over that baddie let's be real.
I think it’s fine here but I called it a liar when it said Kristen Stewert was prettier than Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron got old and was using magic to look young. The movie was pretty bold of tackling ageism in beauty standards. Like The evil queen knew that the king will replace her with younger woman once she grows old so kills the king
I’m old. Also she was 36.
Don't get me wrong I don't think this movie will be that good, I haven't really thought about it at all anyways, with nothing against anyone who likes it because I like my fair share of movies people like to hate on.
I always thought Snow White was about inner beauty myself. Snow White is a good person, she's the "fairest of us all", compared to the Queen who is a bad person. That's it, it helps when she looks good too (not saying she doesn't) but that's not really the point in my opinion.
Besides I think Rachel Zegler pulls off the character well based on trailers, to give the movie some credit.
Yeah, I have zero interest in this or any Disney live action remakes, but she seems super cute and charming in all the ads (ugly outfit aside.)
>I always thought Snow White was about inner beauty myself.
I feel like it was pretty obvious with how the queen herself is pretty fair (if we are to use skin color logic). So the mirror just picked someone whose not only has fair skin but is a good person, unlike the queen whose rotten who tries to kill snow white
Which does get reinforced by how she dresses up as the ugly old evil witch which is how she looks like on the inside
This. Like it kinda spells it out but dense MFers wanna bitch
It's also funny, because Gal Gadot is in full clown makeup here and Rachel Zegler has a more toned town, "nude" makeup job. She's even got the camp evil fake eyelashes
A pretty clear bias for fabricated, artificial femininity. Which, I guess isn't evil by itself and people should be allowed to have fun with Barbiecore and the like. But not a standard that anyone has a right to hold female beauty to!
No, Why would evil queen even have inner Beauty. It is incredibly concerning if evil queen was benchmark for inner beauty before Snow white
