Overall Adaptation Approach
The TV adaptation of "The Summer I Turned Pretty" has taken significant liberties with the source material, leading to a much more fleshed-out narrative. The author Jenny Han, who is involved in the show's creation, has adapted the story as if she were writing it today, allowing for deeper character development and modernized themes [1:1]
[2:1]. Many viewers find the show more enjoyable than the books due to these enhancements
[2:3].
Character Development
In the show, characters are given more depth compared to their book counterparts. Conrad and Jeremiah, who are somewhat flat in the books, are portrayed with more complexity in the series [2:2]
[3:4]. Belly is also depicted as more mature and likable in the show, whereas in the books she can come across as immature
[3:6]
[3:7]. This shift allows for more nuanced interactions and dynamics between the characters.
Plot and Setting Changes
Several plot elements differ significantly between the book and the show. For instance, there is no Cotillion, no relationship between Belly and Jeremiah, and no appearance of Conrad and Jeremiah's father with a new girl in the book [1]. The show introduces new subplots and settings, such as the Deb ball, which provide additional context and activities for the characters
[2:4].
Narrative Structure and Themes
The show flips many conversations and dynamics present in the books, offering a fresh perspective on relationships and conflicts [4]. These changes often give Belly more agency and reflect a shift towards empowering female leads
[4:1]. Additionally, the show tackles mature themes and emotions more openly, making it feel more adult than the books
[3:4].
Reception and Viewer Experience
Many viewers who have read the books express surprise at how different the show feels, yet they appreciate the improvements [2]. The series captures the essence of summer nostalgia while providing a more sophisticated narrative that resonates with both new and returning fans
[5]. Fans of the books may experience whiplash from the rapid pace and changes, but the overall reception suggests that the show offers a richer experience
[5:4].
⚠️SPOILERS, SORRY IDK HOW TO DO THE GREYED OUT THING ⚠️
So I watched the show before I read the book and I was so shocked when reading the book because of how different it was.
No Cotillion No relationship between belly and Jeremiah Stephen wasn’t even there No group of girl friends Jeremiah and Conrad knew about their mothers illness the whole time No author guy for Belly’s mum No fishing job for Conrad No appearance of Conrad and Jeremiahs father with a new girl Her best friend didn’t go to visit in current year
There are many more aspects but I’d be here all day writing a list.
Why is it so different?? Ive only read the first book but I can’t see how some of these parts would be integrated into the story since they’re integral for relationship development that has already happened. I’m just shocked how different it is, it’s as if the only similar thing is that they all have the same names.
Has anyone else been confused by this? Which did you prefer, the book or the series? I think I preferred the series but I was glad there was no cotillion in the book because that was boring af.
I read the book first (just the first of the series), and I much preferred the series. I think in the show Belly was much more likeable. I don’t love all the changes they made but I had more fun watching the show than reading the book. Also, Jeremiah’s got some moves 😂
I haven’t read these books, but lately every tv adaptation of a book or series of books, has had some pretty dramatic changes. For example, Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias and Firefly Lane all have major differences in the tv shows, almost to the point where the shows seem more inspired by the books.
There just wasn’t enough material in the books to fill a series so they had to create more subplots. I think the author is the creator of the series though, so the changes are faithful to the author’s vision
Yeah that makes sense. Surely they could ah e combined the content of all three books or something to get more material? Or included all the flashbacks that aren’t included in the show? I don’t mind either I think they were both good, I was just so shocked at how different they were!
I think she’s hoping for more seasons so she would not want to combine all the books
i get what you are saying. ive read this series twice, once like 5 years ago and again about 2 years ago. As i was watching it i was making corrections in my head. Yes its still great and i love how han did both, but i dont like how mainstream it is compared to the book. It doesnt feel like it changed completely, nor belly, but it changed enough to the point that its almost disarranged and muddling the character.
The show is much better imo
The author wrote the book like over a decade ago, so I think she just has fleshed out the story since then.
I read the book series when i was a preteen back in 2011.
I watched the TV show as it came out, obviously as an adult.
I decided to go back and read the books again last week in preparation for the new season and WOW, I can’t believe I like the show so much more. Usually a book to film/tv adaption isn’t as good as its source material, but when rereading I couldn’t stop thinking how much more likable the characters are in the show vs the book.
I feel like somehow everything is more fleshed out. Obviously it benefits from being able to show scenes from characters that Belly wouldn’t be present for to narrate in the book. We get to see more sides of everyone, and it makes them all much more connected.
I especially like that Steven is included so much more, feeling like a more integral part of the family/Cousins clan than he felt in the books. I also like that Taylor is a better friend in the show, so much more lovable. I also love seeing Susannah and Laurel together outside of the kids perspectives, their relationship is one of my favorite parts of the show.
Idk, overall I just realized that I love the show much more than the books. I’m quite happy with it. Anyone else?
The characters are so much deeper in the show. In the books Conrad kinda sucks and Jeremiah is basically flat
Same feeling for me. This is very rare to be noted. I just read the first book and I think the characters have a lot more depth in the series. I find that the feelings they feel and the tensions between them are much more present in the series. In the book we don't feel enough of Conrad's attraction to Belly... And then I prefer Jere's statement in the series than in the book.
I watched the show first and then read the books - I was in college when the books came out so I was outside of the age demographic. I also didn’t know it was based on a book series, so I read them after I saw the first season.
I look at each separately and try not to compare them. I like them both for different reasons - the books are very sweet and innocent. The show is definitely more adult. I like the additions to season one - adding the Deb ball gave Belly something to do. I did not like all the additions to season 2 - mainly the Aunt Julia/Skye storyline because it just felt like it didn’t really fit, but I enjoyed the additions of all the kids being together at the house, the party, the day at the boardwalk.
I would love to know, if the kids being together at the house, the party and the boardwalk weren’t in Book 2, what exactly was in it? (Am fine with spoilers, just curious!)
Hi! Book two is the most fuzzy for me, but the big plot points are - Susannah passing away from her cancer, Conrad leaving school after finding out the house was put up for sale, Jeremiah and Belly go to find him in Cousins, they find out Adam is the one selling the house, and the boys convince him not to sell it, but they have to keep their grades up. They do get Conrad back to school for his final and Belly does reveal she has feelings for Jeremiah. They do end up going through the storm and have to stop at a hotel overnight and I remember Conrad leaves and takes the bus back to Cousins (I believe..or Boston) and Jeremiah takes Belly back home. I think that’s sort of where the book ends (I could be wrong..it’s been a while since I’ve read it). I just remember it ends rather abruptly. My one critique of Jenny’s writing is her endings are very abrupt and leave you wanting more. And then it picks up two years later in book 3.
I love the additions made on the show and the details provided by the books! They enhance each other and then there is fanfiction which has added a whole additional layer to the complexity of the characters in my mind.
I agree! It feels more evolved too. I just watched an interview with cast where they said that Jenny is writing the show/making changes to the book as if she wrote the books today/this year so we get the benefit of her introspection.
hi, apologies if this has been asked like, all the time. I searched around and couldn't find anything. I'm also spoiler tagging just in case.
I literally just finished the book series and considering I'm in this reddit, we can tell I rly like jelly, and am super disappointed in how they were handled. but I see so much is different just from the discussions here and just wanted to know, is it worth it going into the series so far? does it come together better?
i know it's still ongoing but I'm curious. I don't know, I'm all upset and feel empty from how we'll always have summer ended, so I wanna hear how it weighs against the original story so far. if it's different and better in the places the books fell off, I might go for it. thanks in advance!! 💖💖💖
its a lot better than the books imo. belly is actually likeable in the show while in the books she was really annoying imo. jelly is also treated with more respect in the show vs the books with jenny making the love triangle more equal compared to the books where belly was only obsessed with conrad. the actors also have really great chemistry especially in S2 which has some of their best moments as a ship
ohhhh I'm gonna eat that up then. they just deserved a lot better than what the books gave them
The show is very different and much much better than the books on the overall. Coz the books were written like a decade ago so they're kind of outdated too.
To put it simply: yes. The show follows the books bones, but the in between is so much better. There are some key differences on the show that make the story better and feel like the characters are different from their book counterpart.
The scenes are more interesting, the dynamics are better, and the chemistry of the Jelly actors is off the charts! The show is also a lot more mature than the books, imo
god I could honestly go with it just for it being more mature. it felt like a lot of the drama was very...childish, like yeah they're teenagers but I feel like I was less ridiculous at 17 than belly ended up being. I tried really hard to be fair about it too haha but she just did not grow up past that into the last book.
Book Belly read like a 14yo to me at most 😭 Even in her college era, I wouldn't have put her over 16. The shows are a massive improvement. Lola did an incredible job and the tone overall is more age-appropriate, I feel.
Yeah definitely. Some people even have the opinion that they are fascinated how they turned tsitp into smth watchable, considering what their starting point was.
I personally think the concept of the books was wonderful, but it definitely lacked on any type of good character development, interesting plot as the series continued, or a proper wrap up for the series. The vision was there, yk. The vibes of the summer and what the first book promised was I think why some people did catch onto liking this, but at the end of the day it really was.. an interesting product of its time.
The way the show has modernized every aspect, dealt with characters in a more mature way and gave each one more depth definitely makes me, and I think a lot of us, think that the show is better. But to each their own.
Those books still hold a great lot of nostalgia for some people. And they can be really enjoyable after u ignore some...questionable parts.
The triangle itself has also been expanded, which adds to everything and makes it as fun for us as it is.
it sounds like as a whole it's a lot more enjoyable then! cause while I felt the books were a breezy read (probably the best way to describe something so tied to summer), I was really feeling like we were missing things. that's good to know; I'll check it out sometime then!
also honestly yeah, it's veryyyyy very 2009-2011 "coded" lmfao, like I was in my early teens then but I can super smell it off the books haha. but I'm sooo curious cause I really loved jelly and it broke my heart seeing how dirty they did jeremiah at the end.
Unequivocally, yes.
Have you noticed how the show flips a lot of the conversations around? Especially in season 2 and 3, it feels like they follow the storyline of the books pretty well, butttt most of the conversations between belly/conrad, belly/jer, and Conrad/jer the narrative is flipped. Like episode 4 >! Belly is asking Jer if it would be weird if she stayed at the summer house, whereas in the books, he clearly feels uncomfortable with her being there alone with Conrad and she seems to pretend not to notice and announces she’s going to stay!< I feel like this is a constant difference between the show and books and I don’t love it. I feel like it changes the characters relationship dynamics a lot… and is kind of weird/lazy writing. Like they’re trying to change the story a bit so it’s not word for word to the books, but it nearly is just reversed mindsets or who is saying what.
I really hope that one change they will “flip” though is how the wedding gets called off!
In the books it’s more down to Jeremiah who can’t deal with Belly loving Conrad (as well as him).
I really hope it’s more Belly’s decision in the show and she realises they aren’t right together/she shouldn’t love someone else the way she does.
I agree with this
Like how Jere was very pushy towards telling them about the engagement at the memorial dinner and belly was very uncomfortable doing that but in the show it was belly that did it and wanted to tell them despite Jeres reservations
It completely changed thr dynamic
Yesss! That threw me off. And all of season 2 she’s all about jer. In the books it’s totally not the case, she literally settles for jer when Conrad changes his tune towards her yet again. I think this way it’s set up that Conrad doesn’t look as much like a bad guy. I like that they back up Conrad’s issues more in the show with showing panic attacks and him admitting them openly to Belly whereas that doesn’t happen in the books, but all that does is make me dislike the switch ups in regards to belly and jer specifically even more. She doesn’t coddle him as much in the book and takes issue with his immaturity. But in the show they’re making her seem so much more immature rather than naive and thinking she’s in love like in the books.
I think (and this is a guess) that the decision to make her truly “all about Jere” is to show that she truly did give this relationship her best shot and that it wasn’t just her placeholder relationship for Conrad. In the end it still won’t be right for her, but it wasn’t because there wasn’t love or effort there.
I think it’s making her look worse in the moment, but in the long run I think it’ll justify her choices more if she didn’t hop between the brothers for the heck of it, but because she felt deep (but different) love for both of them.
I hated that belly was the one who announced the engagement in the show. In the book Jeremiah announces it and Belly is nervous and tries to delay the announced. This is important because it shows the Jeremiah was all in but Belly wasn't so sure and didn't want to tell Conrad
Do you think maybe Jenny felt elements of the book had not aged well and she wanted to give Belly more agency? It's her first book, right, or an early one? I didn't read it mainly because it sounded a little Twilight-coded, where the heroine is virginal and kind of pathetic.
Honestly I’m not sure when she wrote it. I listened to the books right before the show came out after I saw a trailer for it. But I could see that completely.
I don’t think it was twilight Virginal personally even tho she stays a virgin. I feel like it was more naive hardcore first love deterring her from growing on her own and having her own dating life outside of Jer and Conrad.
I have but also they haven’t bothered me. I like that bc of the time jump, it has given Belly more of a voice versus in the book, because she comes across very immature and annoying in the book. Not saying she isn’t coming across that way in the show, but I think this is one way the writing on the show is giving more agency to Belly by flipping some of the writing around. I think tv shows, in general, are giving a lot more power to female lead characters than they used to so the male leads can take a step back. I think the switching around also shows how Jeremiah and Belly bring out the worst in each other and why they aren’t meant to be together and how Conrad brings out her best side (more of this is probably to come).
I also look at the books and the show as separate so I don’t really compare the two beyond having specific book moments that I want to see - book 3 is my favorite of this series.
For this season, I don’t really mind the changes that have been made bc it’s less about how they get there for me and more about the big book moments that, as a book reader, I want to see and so far, they’ve included them. I think it’s all flowing really nicely and they’re setting up the next episode in a way that if you’ve read the books, you have an idea of what is coming, but you’re still surprised along with the non-book readers.
The one subplot I don’t understand and don’t think should get as much screen time is the Taylor and her mom; however, it does add drama and give you a glimpse into Taylor’s home life so I see the point somewhat.
Yea I might be overthinking it because I really like your point! I don’t necessarily want to see everything the exact same way as the book by any means, I think the flow just feels off to me because I’ve listened to the books like 5 times so I’m expecting one thing and getting another lol.
But this is my favorite book of the series too and I am super excited about how the last episode ended.
But personally I think because we know belly’s internal dialogue more in the books, even when she’s being immature, we can see more of her unhappiness with her and can kind of tell she’s just forcing/going through the motions in a stubborn way in regards to the wedding events until she’s forced to snap out of it. So in the show, I am excited for that moment in the end and her picking herself…. For a little while 😉
I feel like this season is flowing perfectly with the book even with the changes. I’ve also probably listened/read book 3 about the same amount of times.
If you also look at the prior seasons of the show, season 3 is flowing much more like season 1 did, in my opinion versus season 2. Season 2 felt really clunky and was not my favorite.
Same - I’m very curious to see how it all plays out in the end. I’m definitely rooting for seeing more of her and Conrad together at the end and I want my Connie Baby ending bc that poor man has been through it ♥️
One thing I did sort of work out is the whole thing of Conrad taking ‘look after him’ to mean…literally do whatever he wants whenever he wants including handing your clearly besotted girlfriend over to him (regarding Jere) has been very clumsily handed over to Belly this season. Or at least if you consider it that way, it makes some of the coddling make sense. They’ve flipped a few elements and none of them have landed for me personally.
I miss Steven’s relationship with Conrad too but also they added time to the timeline so he’s probably done thinking Conrad is an option and sees Jer and Belly have been happily together for four years now in the show timeline. I think Conrad has distanced himself from all of them too so Steven and him may have some kind of reconciliation too
As the title says I never read the books and just randomly watched the first season, loved it for this weird nostalgic feeling about teenage years and summer vacations etc. season 2 was a bit different with Susannah's passing but I still kinda got the same vibe, but with season 3 I did not know at all that we're like time jumping and switching locations and getting married?! Anyone else who doesn't know the books feeling like it's too different? From what I kinda gathered is gonna happen I'm confused how we're stuffing all that in one season. I already see the show as very "how a kid imagines being an adult is" or idk just not very realistic in many aspects and it seems it's gonna get even more crazy (I'm still entertained tho don't get me wrong).
Well atp I'm in for a ride ig and have to reajust my expectations but I wonder if it felt different in the books or like how was the third one recieved cause it feels so different to me rn idk why
The time jump still existed in the books. We are through Chapter 11 in the books right now in the show. The story starts outside of cousins so maybe that’s why it feels different to you so far? And they’re all not together? But they will get back to Cousin’s, I am assuming by the end of the next episode or fully by Ep 4.
I think for me the issue is season 1 we spend the whole time getting to Conrad and they get together in the last 5 minutes and then season 2 we start off after they break up, season 2 we get small flashbacks of their relationship through the episodes but we see belly longing to be with Jeremiah while Conrad starts thinking they might get a chance to get back together and end with Jere and belly together, now with season 3 we get a flash forward a year into their relationship with belly moving in and then another flash forward to 3 years later - honestly wish we got small things of them going through those four years and how things progress good and bad. Now we know belly and Jere have been together 4 years happily (where as Conrad we see small glimpses of happiness but mostly unhappy scenes in the little we get) so it’s hard to route for a couple that seems to only really live in the small subtext when it’s been heavily a belly and Jere show in “real” time and screen time. It’s really disheartening and I’m worried it’s going to end the same as season 1 with 5 minutes at the end for flashes.
Book 3 gives you whiplash too. It's not just you. Book readers are just better prepared.
lol right?!
I get you. So many of the other posts are about how the show is going to replicate the books. Idk the whole thing gives Dawson’s creek but in a more serious way somehow with less context. Like it’s wild how similar. They both have a parent die. They both show family dynamics of growing up together in an idyllic place. There’s a girl who dates and ruins a relationship between two boys who are like brothers. This show just feels like the writer didn’t like how that one ended and is “righting” it. Idk I got downvoted previously because I said Conrad is Dawson, Jere is Pacey and Belly is Joey in just a different font. Like the Belly Jere relationship issues are EXACTLY the issues Pacey and Joey have. And Belly in love Conrad for years is exactly the dynamic of Joey/Dawson. Joey even has a Paris moment where she chooses to stay?! It’s wild how similar these shows are! I looked up the writer and she looks to be around my age so it makes sense. She probably watched that show. Idk it’s a great show I just wish Belly had more of a personality outside the brothers. Maybe I’m old and just miss a 24 episode season with filler but it could use some episodes to really flesh out these relationships and characters. I’m cool with a time jump but I need more reasons shown as to why this girl can only date these brothers.
Season 1 had changes made from the book due to jenny not knowing if she was going to get another season(s). One thing changed was the belly/jere pool scene. They didn't kiss in the book but did in the show to move up the love triangle. I understand why but I think having Belly flip flop more in the show made everything worse(for belly and some audiences opinions of her messing with the brothers.) With that being said, how differently do you think the show would have went if jenny had prior knowledge she would have gotten all 3 seasons and didnt have to fit all 3 books into one season? What things do you think would have been more book accurate? Are there things that you think would have been added/removed? Do you think it would have still went a similar route due to belly literally being 100% conrad the first 2 books? I think making it completely book accurate probably wouldn't have been enough drama to keep the show interesting. There wouldn't have even been a triangle until the last season.
I think they would wait until S2 for anything physical between belly Jeremiah letting the car be their first kiss, so the live triangle could be more as the books
I also think so. I also feel like if they waited there would be tension and the buildup would’ve been better. I liked season 1 don’t get me wrong, but I wish she would’ve had confirmation that she was at least getting a second season. I had no strong preference when I first read the books. I leaned more towards Conrad because it was clear that’s who she wanted, but I was just there for the ride. When her and Jeremiah first kissed in Conrad’s car I was sooooo torn but also really excited because the build up was so strong for it. I feel like them kissing in the first season kind of took away the buildup (for me at least)
The necklace plot ♾️
This ! I was so disappointed when it was different in the show
Good point about the drama and the love triangle. I also think the many flashbacks would have been confusing.
I liked the show a heck of a lot more than I ever liked the sound of the books. But that ending was atrocious for season one. It felt deeply unsatisfying. Belly is truly the Rory Gilmore of this generation, and I absolutely will not be taking questions on that fact.
Potential spoilers(I don’t know how to make a spoiler code)
I only really read the first book and just started watching the show but either I zoned out from the book sometimes when I was reading it or the book changed/added in things that weren’t in the book. Maybe the book was intended for an audience a little bit younger than me, (spoilers possibly ahead) but I don’t remember Conrad having the job with the boat guy, I thought Taylor only came to Cousins once in the book, I don’t remember Jeremiah being bi (which wasn’t bad but I didn’t remember it), I don’t remember the ball storyline/ Steven staying the whole summer since in the book he had left early to look at colleges.
So far it’s just been interesting seeing this first season after reading the first book.
Season one only scratched the surface of the books. There is so much more to come.
Also this is one of the only times I'll say it, but the show is actually better than the books.
I loved Sarah Dessen’s “Along For The Ride” when I was younger, and I’m always looking for a cute, beachy, summer story, so when I heard about TSITP, I was pretty excited until I read the blurbs and skimmed some reviews, but figured the show couldn’t hurt too bad with a few hours to kill. It was cute, but the characters definitely did a lot to ruin a good story.
THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I FELT! I wanted Sarah Dessen vibes!
I read the books after watching the show and while I do agree the show was better, I also think the books were different enough to be appreciated on their own. Especially since they're such quick reads.
I am very excited to see where they take S2 and if she ends up with the same person at the end of the series though!
I agree, the show was much better. I still wound up reading all of the books anyway but they were not that enjoyable.
Hey there. So, I ended up reading the first two books of the series, The Summer I Turned Pretty and It's not Summer Without You and...the ending's suck, now don't get me wrong, I liked the books, it's just the endings of both the books that kind of...pisses me off? I mean, I'm not sure whether "pisses me off" are the correct words to express what I'm feeling, but nonetheless, I'm disappointed by the endings, I think the endings are quiet lackluster, in my opinion. Well, yeah that pretty much sums it up. Do any of you feel the same way?
Books 1 & 2 pretty much end the way Seasons 1 & 2 did.
Honestly for me, I didn’t really care for any of the books. I think the show is so much better.
Honestly I would give the first book a 7/10 it's was okayy quite typical. Half way through the second book I was having second thoughts about how annoying Belly is dude everything she saw she'll say "my time at cousins with the boys" and "Susan she's dead" How pick me !!! Left it and never read it against
You're an early bird, aren't you?
Says the person who's here after even me
Hm not really because there’s a third book so I don’t mind the endings of one or two.
Not really since I prefer the show so I wasn't bothered about the book ending as long as Conrad and belly got together let alone had a happy ending
Nooo. I want her & Jere to end up together😭
Mhm… sure 🤠
i just binged the tv show and i really wanna know what happens next. i’m really inpatient so could i just skip the first book and move onto the next straight away?
No, books are too different. Honestly, show is better and you only have to wait a month this for s2.
I only read 2 and 3 but if you're coming from the show I think you'd be disappointed with the books honestly, I definitely was. judging from the comments, seems to be a minority opinion though.
Agree, I read the books before the show, hated them, but then LOVED the show.
Not really. The plot of the show changed a lot from the book so I’m not sure the second book will make much sense to you.
nooo, the second and third book is built up from the first and there’s so much references so if u skip the first then it’s better not reading any at all. i read all three books in like 2 days but skipped 60% of the last one(guilty). there’s like 180 pages and a 3-4h read each book. def recommend
I would read the whole series. There are several changes and it was fun to see the differences from the TV show!
i just finished the first book and not gonna lie i kind of found conrad annoying, however i liked how outgoing jeremiah also i found belly a little bit annoying, also can someone please tell me how on earth do you remember stuff from when you were two let alone have a crush on someone like….
edit: almost done i’m half way through (ish) in the last last book and i change my mind about conrad i actually really like him but i can’t say the same about jeremiah
edit 2: i just finished after like a week lmao but i loved it and not gonna lie i end up did liking conrad way more than i should 😅 and belly unlike other main characters i genuinely didn’t mind her, overall i thought it was a good book and what they did to jeremiah was unfair but at the end it seems like they all ended on good terms (in the future) so he must have been happy himself and re connected his bond with conrad and belly
So I read the book a few months ago and hated Conrad, wanted Belly to be with Jeremiah and they absolutely ruined this in the show. The show makes Jeremiah seem very cringe and manipulative
Ohhh so he wasnt? I just remember him being a little out of touch with reality but in the show he's baaaaad. Steve looks better in the show, I think. I dont remember him much in the books. Conrad and Belly look the same.
the author of this book is very good at making the 2nd love interest way more appealing but then having the mc pick the first one
to all the boys spoiler - same situation there. it’s super frustrating to read 😪
I haven't read the books but the second TATB movie was awful in that respect. They spent the whole movie making John Ambrose perfect and then she just randomly has an epiphany and goes back to Peter when there was no evidence that he was better.
And the fact that there was no resolution with John Ambrose was the worst. She just broke his heart and the audience is supposed to be ok with it.
Exactly! Movie Peter is better, could kiiind of be redeemed but book Peter? The guy was reaaaally problematic.
Could not get past the fact that her name was Belly.
SAME. Haven’t read the books but did just watch the show… every time someone said Belly I just kinda cringed
i used to think the same but once you finish the series it takes on a while different kind of beauty
i honestly found the entire premise of the book really stupid. and i watched the trailer for the show, and damn i CRINGED so hard because that was some bs right there
i finished reading the series last week and i completely agree. in many ways, it's so bad (and dumb) but something about it kept me hooked lol. i find that it's a guilty pleasure type of read. and if you're looking for something logical and mature, this series is definitely not for you.
I agree. I read Jenny han's series and like i like reading it. The writing style is good but after a book or two i get frustrated with the characters and i never pick it up again.
I read it when I was in highschool, early 2015, and honestly I loved the books. But I tried to read them a couple of months back and didn't make it through the first 5 chapters.
The Summer I Turned Pretty book vs show differences
Key Differences Between "The Summer I Turned Pretty" Book and Show
Character Development:
Plot Changes:
Setting and Visuals:
Tone and Themes:
Character Relationships:
