What Redditors are Saying

Top Shonen Anime Series

TL;DR Popular shonen anime series include "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood," "Hunter x Hunter," "One Piece," "Naruto," and "Gintama."

Classic Shonen Favorites

Several classic shonen anime series are frequently recommended across discussions. "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" is often praised for its balanced storytelling and character development [3:2], [2:5]. "Hunter x Hunter" is another favorite, known for its compelling plot and character arcs [3:3]. "One Piece" is celebrated for its epic adventure and long-running storyline, earning it the title of "Shonen King" by some fans [3:6], [4:1].

Diverse Storytelling in Shonen

"Gintama" stands out as a unique entry in the shonen genre due to its blend of comedy, drama, and action. Fans appreciate its ability to encapsulate life and provide a mix of genres, making it special compared to traditional battle-oriented shonen like "Naruto" and "Bleach" [5:1], [5:4]. While not considered a full shonen by some, its versatility and emotional depth make it a favorite [5:7], [5:8].

Other Popular Shonen Titles

Other notable mentions include "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure," "Yu Yu Hakusho," "Death Note," "Attack on Titan," and "My Hero Academia." Each of these series offers distinct themes and styles, from supernatural battles to psychological thrillers [1:2], [2:3], [3:4]. "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure" is particularly noted for its unique art style and creative storytelling [1:5].

Recommendations Beyond the Discussions

For those seeking new experiences within the shonen genre, exploring lesser-known titles such as "Katekyo Hitman Reborn" and "Mob Psycho 100" can offer fresh perspectives and engaging narratives [1:2], [2:2]. Additionally, considering anime that blend shonen elements with other genres, like "Gintama," can provide a more varied viewing experience.

Best Shonen?

If somebody told you “I think Gintama is the best Shonen series!”, would you agree? Why or why not? I know a lot of series are considered shonen, but I guess in this context, the person is comparing Gintama to more battle-oriented shonen, like Naruto and Bleach.

It is best because I felt all sort of emotions watching it I wouldn't call gintama a full shonen though as it had alot blend it like some episode were pure comedy and emotional but that's what made it unique in comparison to your typical battle shonen.

It's a jack of all trades.

Literally what genre does gintama not emulate at some point? It's why it's the goat.

Gintama encapsulates life in general. It's the series that does everything. Not always perfectly, but that in itself makes it more special to me.

I don't consider it a full shonen. It's a mix of slice of life and shonen. Honestly the best parts of the series are the slice of life. None of my favorite episodes take place during the main storyline.

26 upvotes on reddit
yorozuya_lyn_ · OP · 5 months ago

Yesss that’s a good way of describing it. I love the main story but my favorite episodes will always be the one about Kagura’s exercise routine or when Madao goes to court. I also really love how the main story line ties in the side stories as well 💖💖

When considering soundtrack, story, characters, etc (dub if you want to include that), what is the best shonen out there? Of course this is a subjective question, but I am curious of what people consider the best or at least high quality shonens, not just the number one best to clarify.

Bleach’s first 63 episodes are close to flawless as far as shonen. The anime as a whole is elevated big time by sound, whether it’s voice acting or the OST. I love the dub too.

It doesn’t stick the landing after those first 63 episodes in either the anime or the manga. Too much filler in the anime, and the canon stuff dawdles over insignificant characters too much.

Regardless, I am stoked for the Thousand Year Blood War anime adaptation this winter. Really hope they simulcast it and dub it fast like Yashahime.

All shounen, or battle shounen? If we are counting all shounen, I'd probably say my personal favorites are;

  • Aria the Origination
  • Gunbuster
  • Nichijou
  • Attack on Titan (could move way way up depending on how it ends)
  • Beastars
  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
  • Gintama (Not finished or caught up yet. Could move way up or down)
  • Hajime no Ippo
  • Gabriel Dropout
  • Hunter x Hunter

Runner-Ups: City Hunter, Kyou kara Ore wa!!, Bloom Into You, Ika Musume, Haikyuu, Samurai Champloo, Dragon Ball, Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Hitori Bocchi, Digimon Tamers, Kekkai Sensen, Your Lie in April

Maoujou de Oyasumi could definitely make it into my top 10 once the last 2 episodes air. Hunter x Hunter would be WAY higher if it was more consistent, because I think Chimera Ant Arc is at least as good as any single arc in any of the other anime listed.

Yeah, a lot of younger kids are enjoying it. Almost all shounen is the same in a way but this one has a great story even though the third arc does drag a lot but it’s worth it to stick it to the end! If you don’t like it after 3-5 episodes it probably isn’t for you but I recommend it

Attack on Titan

Assassination Classroom

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Soul Eater

Fairy Tail

Yu Yu Hakusho

Bungo Stray Dogs

One Punch Man

All of these are among my all-time favorites, but the first three listed are a must watch in my opinion. I'm a dub watcher as well and all of these have excellent dubs. They can also all be found on Funimation, except One Punch Man. Currently, only season one of One Punch Man is available dubbed.

I've also heard incredible things about Hunter x Hunter (2011), though I personally haven't seen it yet and I don't believe the entire show is dubbed yet.

Finally, the dub of both Demon Slayer and One Punch Man S2 are debuting on Toonami this upcoming Saturday (Oct 12). I've been holding off on Demon Slayer to wait for the dub, so I'm super excited. New episodes will come out weekly from there. This is currently the only way to watch the dub of these two shows.

Any other girlies who love shonen?

Posted by Background-Diet-4703 · in r/Animeforgirls · 2 months ago

Helloo!

I have no idea how to start this but here we go- I see so many girls who love shoujo, and so do I! Don't get me wrong I'm all for it and I absolutely adore shoujo, although I mostly read Manga of it lol, but when it comes to anime wise I'm always shonen. Heck my favorite anime is One piece! I'm all caught up and I'm currently on the second watch with my best friend who got me into it🥹🫶.

Where im going with this is, what's your favorite shonen anime? (If you can't choose just one, the more the merrier🤌). I'd love to see what your favorites are.

I'll also add more of my other favorites if anyone is curious 👀

— Bleach

— Dragonball

— Mashle

— mob psycho 100

— Solo leveling

— Haikyuu

— Saiki k

— cowboy bebop

— bungo stray dogs

— My hero academia💘

— Dr stone💘

I'll stop right there, I have so many more. The list can go on and on🤧

Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood) will forever be my favourite. Others I loved in my Tumblr era in the '10s were ofc Attack on Titan, but also Tokyo Ghoul, Blue Exorcist, Soul Eater, Noragami. Also loved Haikyuu and Kuroku no Basket. I fell off watching anime before Haikyuu finished and I'm trying to find time to rewatch the whole thing.

Some underrated ones from the 2010s are, imo: Gangsta, Zankyou no Terror, Durarara!!, Deadman Wonderland. Especially the last one can get quite gory though. The anime censors it but the manga very much does NOT.

Since I got back into anime I've started catching up with the "new gen". Love JJK, The second season 2 opening is one of my all-time favourites. Demon Slayer's art is gorgeous and the storyline is good but... it's pretty slow and I'm having a hard time with it tbh. Wind Breaker feels like a very classic "power of friendship" shounen but it takes its characters bg seriously and I like that a lot. I've been wanting to get into My Hero Academia next, but haven't started yet.

I really love Mob and Saiki from your list! I’m also pretty sure Kaiju no 8 is Shonen and that show is so good (I need to start watching the new season). I also finished the JJK manga recently, and I’m excited for the anime to continue.

Omgg, that's very cool! And yes, Kaiju no 8 is shonen, so no worries lol🥹. I actually haven't seen it yet, but its definitely on my list to watch👀.

Yooooooo Jjk is very good, I haven't read it but watched the anime. I am currently anime only, but I do know a lot of spoilers. When i heard that they're finally coming back with new content, I got so excited ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

Definitely! Though my tastes have been more towards seinen lately, I still have quite a few shounen which are favorites: One Piece, Gintama, Attack on Titan, Full Metal Alchemist, Hell's Paradise. With Jjk I have this bizarre relationship where I found the story and character progression to be disappointing, yet I am still really attached to it.

Me too!! I love shonen but I'm getting kind of tired of the 'young underdog who never gives up' storyline. I've also been leaning more towards seinen and fighting animes. Any recs?

2 upvotes on reddit
Quiet-Budget-6215 · 2 months ago

Sure, I can give a list of some that I particularly loved, though disclaimer, I probably watch more shounen fighting anime, I'm more into the atmospheric stuff in seinen.

That being said:

Vinland Saga (yes, starting out pretty basic, but I really do love the story, I'm also almost done with the manga)

Orb: on the movement of the earth was one from last year that got me hooked

Mushishi for the atmospheric vibes

Black Lagoon for the badass female character

Golden Kamuy

Dorohedoro

Land of the lustrous (I've only read the manga for this one, but it also has an anime)

I know some girls in real life who watch and read shoujo but most prefer shonen but online I discovered that so many girks into shoujo especially now

In the past, shoujo had such a bad rep and even now, it's gets a lot of criticism, it's romance and action are considered inferior and weak

>you really have good taste

Aww thank you 😊

I highly recommend reading and watching D Gray Man, the anime has some issue but the manga is fantastic and has a gothic vibe, it's a bit long but it's worth it
