What Redditors are Saying

Animes by the Creators of Death Note

TL;DR The creators of Death Note, Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, have worked on several other notable projects including "Bakuman" and "Platinum End."

Works by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata

Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata are well-known for their collaboration on "Death Note," but they have also teamed up for other projects. Their work on "Bakuman" is particularly noteworthy; it's a story about two aspiring manga creators and provides an insightful look into the manga industry. Another project by them is "Platinum End," which explores themes of life, death, and morality through a supernatural narrative similar to "Death Note."

Recommendations Similar to Death Note

Several recommendations were made for anime that capture a similar vibe to "Death Note." "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion" frequently comes up as a recommendation due to its strategic and intellectual battles reminiscent of those in "Death Note" [2:1][3:1]. "Monster" by Naoki Urasawa is another suggestion, praised for its deep psychological elements and exploration of death [2:3][4:1]. "Future Diary" (Mirai Nikki) was mentioned as a lighter alternative with similar themes [5:1].

Exploring Psychological and Thriller Genres

For those interested in the psychological and thriller aspects of "Death Note," "Parasyte: The Maxim" and "Death Parade" are recommended [4:2][3:6]. These series delve into human nature and moral dilemmas, offering intense narratives that keep viewers engaged.

Other Media Related to Death Note

Beyond anime, there are several adaptations and related media for "Death Note." This includes live-action films, a musical, and even a Netflix series [3:3][3:5]. These adaptations vary in their fidelity to the original manga but offer different perspectives and interpretations of the story.

When I first started watching anime, I watched “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion” right after finishing Death Note and thought it was the perfect thing to watch after. Very different stories but tonally they are very similar. Also quite a good watch.

I like all 3 you mentioned so here are a few suggestions:

Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho, My Hero Academia, Naruto / Naruto Shippuden, Vinland Saga, Hunter X Hunter, Demon Slayer

Attack on Titan and Hunter X Hunter being probably the best animes out there. Have fun!

First time watcher: Cinema!

Posted by Chicagown · in r/deathnote · 2 months ago

Not a huge anime guy (at least I wasnt for the past 30 years). Until I gave Berserk a shot when the full series was recommended to me on YouTube back in December of last year. It was solid. Took me a few months, but I was finally convinced to give FMAB a shot. That was really solid.

My anime buddies had given me tons of recs as they have all been watching anime for quite sometime. Decided to ignore them this time and give Death Note a shot. Boy was that the right decision. What a show. Had me on the edge of my seat for the entire damn show. Absolute cinema.

Any other similar series to death note? Serious, suspenseful, psychological. I was looking at Monster next. Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated?

Code Geass I'm the way that it has the same plot (young man who is given a god like power and uses it to change the world as he wishes), but CG is more about mechas, politics, military and (personally) I think it's better.

Can any death note lovers recommend me an anime?

Posted by hygsi · in r/deathnote · 6 years ago

Death Note is my all time favorite anime but so far I've only watched CodeGeass (my second favorite just because I got tired of fanservice and filler but the ending's pretty great) Monster (my third because some episodes are a bit slow but I loved the mystery and detective feel to it) Steins Gate (4th just because I spent the first few episodes lost but I loved when the conflict unfolded) and Attack on Titan (I didn't like this one that much cause they repeat the same monologue a lot and by the second season it feels like they're going slow on purpose). Overall I loved 4 of the 5 I've watched but my favorite's DeathNote because each and every episode brought something important to the story, the conflict was intriguing, the suspense kept me on edge and the main characters were quite memorable. So based on this, can anyone please recommend me an interesting anime? If this isn't the right sub to ask this do let me know.

Okay, you have to try Kaiji

It's a true masterpiece and better than all those that you mentioned after DeathNote. It's really really good and involves deep psychological battles, the depth and seriousness is of the same level as death note. I can't recommend any anime more, it's really awesome. It's underrated due to its art style, but please try it.

I answered a question like this a few months ago as a matter of fact. I'll just copy some of my answers from that. I'll provide links for all canon material. DM me for any other links you want. Remember, manga reads right to left.

                             **Canon**
  1. The epilogue. The anime removed the epilogue entirely. Here's the link.

https://death-note-online.com/manga/death-note-chapter-108/

  1. The C-Kira one-shot. It takes place three years after Kira's defeat. It gives a good insight into Near's internal conflict of trying to live up to L's legacy.

https://death-note-online.com/manga/death-note-chapter-109/

  1. The A-Kira one-shot. Set in 2019, it follows a boy named Minoru who, as you can guess, gets a Death Note. It has some deductions from adult Near as well, so this one is more of the standard Death Note experience.

https://death-note-online.com/manga/death-note-chapter-110/

  1. The manga in general. The anime is infamous for removing a lot from the manga's 2nd half. If you'd like a better representation of the story and its characters, I'd recommend reading it. Roughly 10 episodes worth of content was removed from everything after L died.

https://death-note-online.com/manga/death-note-chapter-1/

  1. The Los Angeles BB murder case. This is a novel that takes place two years before the events of the series. It's about the case L mentioned where him and Naomi Misora worked together. It's narrated by Mello.

https://archive.org/details/manga_Death_Note_Another_Note

                          **Non-canon**
  1. There's a live action Japanese show. It alters a lot of the plot and changes some characters and their personalities (for example, Near is introduced earlier on and Mello is Near's puppet).

  2. The Japanese live action movies. They have good casting for L and it has an alternate ending. Near and Mello don't exist here so if you hate them, you should really like these 2 movies. There are two other movies that don't cover the actual plot of Death Note. One that centers on L and another that focuses on multiple Kiras.

  3. The terrible Netflix movie. It's awful, I wouldn't recommend watching it. Light and L are complete buffoons.

I second this (especially the part about the Netflix movie, did you know there are plans for a second one?) and I would add the novel 'L change the world' (as I haven't watched the movie it's adapted from). Afaik it's set during the time of the second movie 'DN - The Last Name' and is about L vs. bioterrorists and their virus.

As far as the anime itself goes that is the end. There is however, a prequel novel called Deathnote: Another Note and couple of manga one shots that serve as short sequels to the original manga, which is more or less exactly the same as the anime in terms of story.

Hey I'm glad you enjoyed it! The usual ones I see recommended on here for having something similar to Death Note include...Monster, Code Geass, Promised Neverland, Psychopass, Death Parade...but tbh from what I've watched, none of them are alot "like Death Note", they just share certain qualities. Death Note is the top of its style imo but that's why I'm here on this sub lol

Completely different and unrelated kinds of shows, Clannad is my favorite romantic comedy, Rurouni Kenshin is my favorite shounen. Fullmetal Alchemist is very were well known and popular too. Insert endless list here. Etc, etc. They're all different genre but still all great. Depends if you wanna expand your palette or find things that are similar.

I think it’s worth noting that Death Note is one of the highest-rated anime series ever made. In my personal opinion its the best. It’s extremely popular, even with people who don’t usually like anime. It was the first anime I watched (besides Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!) I still haven’t found an anime that topped it, even popular ones like Attack On Titan (which I didn’t end up enjoying) Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia etc. So I’m just forewarning you that not many anime come close. Ones I have enjoyed (but aren’t similar) are: Demon Slayer, Castlevania, Seven Deadly Sins, Sword Art Online, Naruto, Clannad, Love Hina, Fruits Baskets, K-On!, Toradora, Durarara!!, Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works.

I would love a series that is about the aftermath of Death Note, especially if it follows the police task force that were on the Kira case.

Maybe it coud be a show set before Death Note. L origin story perhaps? I love L.

If there was another Death Note anime show, what would you want it to be about? Anything. A sequel, prequel, spin-off, reboot.

There’s a one shot manga chapter that’s a small sequel to the story. in addition to this, there’s a book called Death Note: Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases. It’s not a manga. It’s an actual written book

There’s also a manga book called How To Read 13 which just gives additional information about the characters. I think it’s interesting.

And the other one that I know of is called L: Change The World which gives extra information about L and more background on him.

For that matter, what if there was an entire Death Note What If? series? Whether it adheres to canon or not? Like...

What if Light did become a shinigami after dying?

For that matter, what if all Death Note users became shinigami? How would Raye or Mikami react?

What if L and Light swapped roles?

What if Matsuda was the one who got the Death Note instead?

What if the Death Note had a rule that you can't kill the same way twice, like in the Simpsons parody?

AI Answer

🤖

animes by the creators of Death Note

Key Considerations:

  1. Creators: Death Note was created by Tsugumi Ohba (writer) and Takeshi Obata (illustrator). Both have worked on other notable projects.

  2. Notable Works:

    • Bakuman: This series follows two high school students who aspire to become manga artists. It explores the manga industry and the challenges of creating a successful series.
    • Platinum End: This series involves a battle royale among individuals chosen by angels to become the next god. It shares thematic elements with Death Note, such as moral dilemmas and supernatural elements.
  3. Themes: Both Bakuman and Platinum End explore themes of ambition, morality, and the consequences of one's choices, similar to Death Note.

Recommendation: If you enjoyed Death Note for its psychological depth and moral complexity, you might find Platinum End particularly engaging. It retains the darker themes and intense storytelling that fans of Death Note appreciate. On the other hand, if you're interested in the creative process behind manga, Bakuman offers a lighter yet insightful perspective.
