TL;DR
Classic Psychological Thrillers
"Monster" is frequently cited as a quintessential psychological thriller anime. It offers a deep dive into themes of morality and the human psyche, making it a favorite among fans of the genre [1]
[2:5]. Another classic recommendation is "Psycho-Pass," which combines elements of crime and societal control to create a thrilling experience
[4:2]
[5:3].
Works by Satoshi Kon
Satoshi Kon's works are highly recommended for those interested in psychological thrillers. "Perfect Blue" and "Paranoia Agent" are particularly noted for their exploration of identity and reality [1:1]
[5:2]. These animes often blur the lines between fantasy and reality, offering viewers a unique psychological experience.
Unique Recommendations
For something different, consider "Ghost Hound" and "Shiki." Both offer atmospheric storytelling with psychological elements that delve into the supernatural [1:2]
[5:5]. "Erased" is another popular choice, combining mystery with emotional depth
[5:5].
Anime with Mystery Elements
If you enjoy mystery alongside psychological thrills, "Steins;Gate" and "Death Note" are excellent choices [3]. They feature complex plots with unexpected twists that keep viewers engaged. "The Promised Neverland," particularly its first season, is also recommended for its intense psychological and mystery-driven storyline
[4].
Exploring Lesser-Known Titles
For those looking to explore lesser-known titles, "The Perfect Insider" offers a mind-bending narrative with college students trapped on an island [2:3]. "Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor" provides a thrilling gambling experience that inspired the TV show "Squid Game"
[3:2].
These recommendations provide a diverse array of psychological thriller animes that cater to various tastes within the genre. Whether you're looking for classic thrillers or unique narratives, there's something here for every fan of psychological storytelling.
These are my top picks for psychological/dark anime. I’m not into surface-level edge or gore just to be gritty. I want more shows where the real horror is emotional. Shere the “villain” might be your own mind, morality, or memory.
Now and Then, Here and There
The Alchemist

Monster
Berserk

Ghost Hound
Shion no ou
Shinrei Tantei Yakumo
Psycho - pass
So sad that no one talks/watch Ghost Hound, the atmosphere is something out of this world.
Yeah, It's a great anime and i've never seen it recommended.
Pluto, Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade, (Maybe) Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Perfect Blue is the PERFECT recommendation for this.
See what I did there?…I’ll show myself out 😑
Kaiji, My home hero, Tomodachi Game
More of smart anime like Steins;gate, Terror in Resonance, Death Note and Code Geass.
Madoka Magicaaaaaa I’d suggest give it at least 3/4 episodes
thanks! I'll give it a try! :))
This.
The Perfect Insider might be up your alley. Group of college students trapped on an island with a killer. Very mind-screwy.
oh sounds great! thanks!
I'd say happy sugar life is a pretty interesting one that not many know about
thanks man! def check it out!
Monster
thanks! I'll check it out!
Monster is peak fiction 🔥
Not necessarily thriller but I think Psycho Pass would fall into this and it definitely has some thriller scenes.
thanks dude! will definitely check it out!
I love psychological thrillers, but unfortunately there aren’t a ton of good anime within this genre.
Based on my ranking of the psychological thriller anime I’ve watched, what are some you think I’d like?
I tend to like shows with a mystery element, or at least with plot twists where you don’t know what will happen next, relatable and vulnerable characters, and a clear plot to anchor the story.
Steins;Gate 10/10
Summer Time Rendering 9.5/10
Made in Abyss 9.5/10
Death Note 9.5/10
Oshi no Ko 9.5/10
Heavenly Delusion 9.5/10
Parasyte 9/10
Erased 9/10
Zankyou no Terror 9/10
Serial Experiments Lain 8/10
Re:Zero 8/10
Elfen Lied 7.5/10
Shinsekai Yori 7.5/10
Madoka Magica 7.5/10
Psycho Pass 7/10
Kakegurui 7/10
Odd Taxi 7/10
Death Parade 6.5/10
Another 6.5/10
Perfect Blue 6/10
Paranoia Agent 4/10
Paprika 4/10
Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor - this anime inspired the creator of the TV show "Squid Game". A psychological/thriller and gambler anime.... but Kaiji is levels above Kakegurui.
Code Geass - you'll find it very similar to Death Note. Especially because of the MC and his goals. Masterpiece type of anime that's usually at the top of all the 'all-time' lists.
Classroom Of The Elite - If you like genius MCs, mind games and manipulation, you'll like this one.
The Promised Neverland - an excellent psychological thriller, also has that mystery element. Though you only need to watch season 1.
One Outs - this is a psychological thriller disguised as a sports anime. Think 'Yagami Light' as a baseball pitcher.
* For reference, some of my favorites are Death Note, Steins;Gate, Summertime Rendering, Parasyte, Made In Abyss.
* I've only watched these anime subbed. Cant vouch for dubbed.
I liked Code Geass. Lelouch was amazing, though I’d say he’s far more “correct” in his ethical framework than Light is.
Will have to check out the others. Never knew One Outs was a psychological thriller—-always thought it was just a baseball anime.
Funnily enough Code Geass is actually the last anime I watched dubbed, about 6 months ago. The dub was pretty good.
Thanks for the suggestions!
No problem.
Yeah, after the first couple episodes of One Outs, you realize it's mainly about a guy outsmarting everyone who goes against him. He's a gambler.
As for Kaiji, it is generally advised to watch that one subbed. Particularly.
Monster (it can be a little slow, it is also long)
The Promised Neverland (season 1 only)
Gakkougurashi (this might be closer to psychological horror)
Tomodachi Game
Higashi no Eden
Talentless Nana
Angels of Death
Rainbow (it has some mature topics)
Try Ergo Proxy and Pluto. Both are cyberpunk-y mysteries with Ergo Proxy being more grungy and Pluto almost more noir-y (?)
More of a reach but you may also like Princess Tutu, Baccano, and Durarara. Princess Tutu is kinda like Madoka where it starts normalish but then spirals (although it spirals in a more meta way). Baccano and Drrr both have a large cast of characters and several plot lines that start weaving back over eachother.
I think I’d love Ergo Proxy and Pluto—I’ve just held off on Pluto because it was spoiled for me, so I’m trying to forget the spoiler lol (Idek if this so true, but I was told “half the characters die and the main character is a robot”).
Baccano was actually one of the first anime I watched, and enjoyed it. It didn’t blow me away, but I gave it a 7.5/10. It was fun, and I loved Isaac and Miria, but I sort of almost wish the story just focused on one character and had a more direct plot without all the jumping around tbh.
Will look into Princess Tutu and Durarara!
For what it’s worth Pluto felt way more character driven for me where while the mystery was a major part of it, what kept me coming back was the character writing - I’m not sure if you’ve seen Dandadan but there’s one episode everyone raves about where they give a side character the spotlight and it’s arguably one of the greatest episodes of anime I’ve ever seen, and that was what a lot of Pluto felt like to me. Also the robot thing is barely a spoiler, it’s brought up VERY early on into the show. (But I totally get the spoiler thing, it happened to me with Code Geass,,,,)
Seeing Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent at the bottom kills me inside
I’ll recommend Monster. It’s an anime classic.
Yeah I’m just not a fan of Satoshi Kon’s style tbh. I respect his work, and I love the themes he explores, but I need stories to have a clear plot and Paranoia Agent is a bit too episodic while Perfect Blue is a bit too thematic for me.
Angel of Death is watchable, I don't see that one up there.
Shiki should be up there
Gantz (Beware very mature content) ummm could trigger folks
I’m only ranking the ones I’ve seen, this post is meant moreso to get recommendations based on my favorites and least favorites than an objective list lol.
Have heard great things about Shiki!
Have heard not so great things about Gantz lol
Ah. Gotcha. Well Check out Shiki and Angel of Death.
Gantz isn't for everyone lol
Ones I've Already Seen are:
Death Note (one of my few 10/10's, I love it)
Another (watched the show and read the manga it was great, 8/10)
Parasyte (very good, 8-9/10)
Mirai Nikki (I really enjoyed Mirai Nikki especially bc it was one of the first shows I've seen, 8/10)
The Promised Never Land (I loved season 1, 8/10)
Tokyo Ghoul (loved it, one of my first shows so definitely personal bias 8/10)
School Days (which sucked IMO, but the ending was worth it)
I love this genre but I have yet to watch many shows w/ this kind of content, please suggest some! My personal favorite of this list is Death Note, any psychological horror show not in this list would be appreciated! I also am ok with gore
I really liked these and think they would fit what you're looking for:
{Psycho-Pass}
{Terror in Resonance}
{Dusk Maiden of Amnesia}
{Elfen Lied}
{B: The Beginning}
{The Future Diary}
These are maybe less of a good fit, but they're in the ballpark, and I really liked them:
{Shadows House}
{Brynhildr in the Darkness}
{Dorohedoro}
{Speed Grapher}
Also, I didn't really like them, but {Deadman Wonderland} and {Btooom!} are probably worth checking out.
PSYCHO-PASS - (AL, A-P, KIT, MAL)

I really really recommend the Higurashi manga or visual novel instead than the anime (manga is faster, visual novel doesn’t have any cuts and an amazing OST). The anime cuts out most of the meat, and meat is crucial in a mystery story. As my favorite thriller I also recommend the sequel to Higurashi, Umineko (manga or visual novel). They both have one of the best soundtracks in gaming and they both are deeply moving stories (it’s the piece of “anime media” that made me tear up more), but the anime really doesn’t do it justice (you can see all the people saying that the second season ruins the story)
Saw all the mentioned! My psychological thriller fav is Monster, my horror anime fav is Higurashi no naku koro ni.
I second this but you need to watch higurashi no naku koro no kai after the first season to get the answers which I didn't knew for a long time and thought the series was wierd.
Madoka Magica
Mieruko-chan is also screening currently.
The most relateable psychological horror is Watamote. People are so horrified by that one they can't finish it.
Mieruko-chan is not a psychological horror… it’s a horror-comedy
Isn't Mieruko-chan like Horror Comedy or something?
Psycho-Pass
Steins;Gate
Dorohedoro, Terror in Resonance, and psycho pass are done of my favorites
Made in Abyss is a horrific story masked in an adorable art style, don't let it fool you at first. Such an amazing concept and so well executed, can't wait for s2 to come out!
I edited with more additions. They are all non traditional psychological horror. And madoka needs you to watch at least 4 episodes before you think of me as a troll. But it literally has psyhcological thriller and horror in its genre listings
Ever since I finished Urasawa’s “Monster”, I have yet to fill the void it left behind. I am trying to find a new psychological thriller anime or just a darker anime in general with some fall vibes. I’m open to any recommendations!
Paranoia Agent
Perfect Blue
My Home Hero
Speed Grapher
Psycho Pass
I second these recommendations
Glad to find more thriller enjoyers 👍.
I finished Monster 2 years ago, and have since then searched for more shows like it. I’ve watched many psychological thriller animes since then, but I must say that there honestly haven’t been anyone that similar to Monster, it’s a very unique series. But I can recommend some other great thriller ones.
These are some of the series I watched right after monster: Berserk, Death Parade, Pluto (another Urasawa adaptation). I also started reading 21th century boys, which is a thriller manga by Urasawa that kind of gives of a similar vibe as Monster.
Thank you so much,, I loved death parade as well. I didn’t know Pluto was adapted by Urasawa , I’ll have to check it out.
It’s not anime but 20th Century Boys was made into a live action trilogy of films that are fantastic.
Asadora! Is Urasawa’s current manga project and it is fantastic.
For anime maybe check out Sonny Boy.
Ghost Hound
Shiki
Shinrei Tantei Yakumo
Erased
pluto is so good never heard anyone else speak and it
Lately I've become addicted to Psychological (if possible gore) anime such as When They Cry series, Mirai Nikki(I watched this long ago), Parasite, Summertime Render (I've read the manga already) , Tomadachi Game, and so on. If possible I like it if it is released in 2018 up till now since I'm confident I have watched some of the old one it's just too much to mention. Thank you
zankyou no terror Is a good one
Thank you but I've watched it already.
The Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyoukai) (a series of movies).
Overall it's a fairly dark story with moments of action, violence, some blood and gore alongside an ongoing mystery and a heavy supernatural element. It can appear confusing if watched in release order (which is recommended for first timers) because the story isn't told chronologically, but a rewatch in chronological order is extremely satisfying and helps to fill in any missing pieces of the narrative.
It's animated by ufotable so you just know it'll look great.
However, the movies were released prior to 2018 so maybe you've seen them already? It's not that well known (it deserves to be though!) so there's a fair chance you've not seen it.
Death Parade is a cool one. Not that gorey. But very nice story. And the art is next level too.
Monster
Psycho pass
I'm a big fan of psychological thriller anime and always enjoy stories with intense mind games, suspense, and unexpected twists. I’ve watched Death Note, Steins;Gate, and Monster, but I’m looking for more great anime in this genre. Any recommendations?
Dang most of what I would recommend already stated!
Maybe try out
Ergo Proxy
Paranoia Agent
Eden of the East
Kaiji
Id:Invaded
Link Click!
Neon Genesis Evangelion, The End of Evangelion movie, and then the 4 Rebuild movies.
People have written their thesis statement on it, and still do lol
If it makes you examine yourself too much, just keep pushing through.
Searching for anime from genre psychological thriller
Nothing comes close to {Steins;Gate} imo, haven't seen Monster yet though
Erased, The Promised Neverland, and Made in Abyss.
Don't forget that Berserk is a psychological thriller through and through, it's just subtle about it in the beginning.
Also, watch School-Live! and dont read a synopsis or anything, just jump right in for the best experience.
Edit: I almost forgot, Shinsekai Yori (From the New World) is a must-watch.
{Monster}
{Death Note}
{Death Parade}
{Paranoia Agent}
{Blue Literature}
{When They Cry}
{Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor}
{Puella Magi Madoka Magica}
{Psycho-Pass}
I second this list plus Danganronpa and Terror in Resonance
+1 for Terror in Resonance. And Monster's already in the list so that makes both my favourite psychological thrillers here.
x2 for Monster
If you do decide to watch Monster, watch it last. It would make every other show seem “fine” if you watched it first. Slow burn, but absolutely incredible storytelling and characters.
I have watched a lot of the list above minus a couple including Monster. I think it’s time for me to dive in. Where can one watch it? Is it on funimation?
Monster is great but imo Madoka Magica is slightly better
x2 for kaiji, one of the best anime I've ever watched

Serial Experiments Lain is a must
Flowers of Evil
Paranoia Agent
Perfect Blue
I am new to Anime but, I always liked watching Psychological Thriller movies and books. I also wanted to watch the Horror genre with my girlfriend. I have vacations for a week, so I wanted some anime suggestions for those genres to watch.
Anime with a few episodes would be even better :)
Serial Experiments Lain
Texhnolyze
Serial experiments lain isn't really a thriller, but still very interesting and surreal at times. Some scenes are kind of uncomfortable, so I could see the horror aspect.
Psycho-pass
Moriarty the patriot
Ghost in the shell 1995
Madoka magica
Id invaded
Madoka Magica (looks can be deceiving)
Made in Abyss (looks can be deceiving)
Parasyte
Dorohedoro
Kaiji
Tomodachi Game
Thanks for commenting 😊
For something a bit different, Ghost Stories (English dub, trust me)
"Look out , Ted !"
I’ll second Kaiji, too.
Highly recommend from the new world
Im looking for something similar to another...the promised neverland, etc.( that kind of vibe) . Basicly an horror/mystery anime with pychological factors, that keeps me guessing and wanting for more.
(Preferebly if it´s 12 or 24 ep long).
Also I have in my watch list : steins gate, erased and recently started pyscho-pass.
Monster
Psycho pass
Death note
Erased
Steins; gate
Terror in resonance
The promised neverland
Berserk
Shiki
Fma:b
Code geass
Serial experiments lain
Serial experiments lain, Madoka Magica, Made in abyss
Def. watch Erased it's one of my fav. thrillers. Also watched Terror in Resonance recently and finished it in one go :)) Enjoy
I will give it a try! Yeah I also heard about Terror in Resonance and it seems pretty interesting, so I will watch it too when I finish erased.
Terror in resonance ✔ out. Watch asap
Erased. A hundred times over Erased.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
(HiDive) 2006->Kai->Rei
(Crunchyroll) Gou->Sotsu
Two full-length mysteries, a main one and a sequel, averaging 40 episodes each. The definitive anime mystery/horror.
But if you want something short, try Gakkou Gurashi. Do NOT look it up in advance. No Pictures, no summaries, no reviews. Watch the first episode all the way through before making up your mind.
