  • Explore works by Satoshi Kon for unique psychological experiences.

Classic Psychological Thrillers

"Monster" is frequently cited as a quintessential psychological thriller anime. It offers a deep dive into themes of morality and the human psyche, making it a favorite among fans of the genre [1][2:5]. Another classic recommendation is "Psycho-Pass," which combines elements of crime and societal control to create a thrilling experience [4:2][5:3].

Works by Satoshi Kon

Satoshi Kon's works are highly recommended for those interested in psychological thrillers. "Perfect Blue" and "Paranoia Agent" are particularly noted for their exploration of identity and reality [1:1][5:2]. These animes often blur the lines between fantasy and reality, offering viewers a unique psychological experience.

"The Promised Neverland," particularly its first season, is also recommended for its intense psychological and mystery-driven storyline [4].

Exploring Lesser-Known Titles

For those looking to explore lesser-known titles, "The Perfect Insider" offers a mind-bending narrative with college students trapped on an island [2:3]. "Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor" provides a thrilling gambling experience that inspired the TV show "Squid Game" [3:2].

These recommendations provide a diverse array of psychological thriller animes that cater to various tastes within the genre. Whether you're looking for classic thrillers or unique narratives, there's something here for every fan of psychological storytelling.

ORIGINAL POST

These are my top picks for psychological/dark anime. I’m not into surface-level edge or gore just to be gritty. I want more shows where the real horror is emotional. Shere the “villain” might be your own mind, morality, or memory.

Psychological Thriller anime based on my taste

Posted by jdjdnfnnfncnc · in r/AnimeReccomendations · 4 months ago

I love psychological thrillers, but unfortunately there aren’t a ton of good anime within this genre.

Based on my ranking of the psychological thriller anime I’ve watched, what are some you think I’d like?

I tend to like shows with a mystery element, or at least with plot twists where you don’t know what will happen next, relatable and vulnerable characters, and a clear plot to anchor the story.

  1. Steins;Gate 10/10

  2. Summer Time Rendering 9.5/10

  3. Made in Abyss 9.5/10

  4. Death Note 9.5/10

  5. Oshi no Ko 9.5/10

  6. Heavenly Delusion 9.5/10

  7. Parasyte 9/10

  8. Erased 9/10

  9. Zankyou no Terror 9/10

  10. Serial Experiments Lain 8/10

  11. Re:Zero 8/10

  12. Elfen Lied 7.5/10

  13. Shinsekai Yori 7.5/10

  14. Madoka Magica 7.5/10

  15. Psycho Pass 7/10

  16. Kakegurui 7/10

  17. Odd Taxi 7/10

  18. Death Parade 6.5/10

  19. Another 6.5/10

  20. Perfect Blue 6/10

  21. Paranoia Agent 4/10

  22. Paprika 4/10

Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor - this anime inspired the creator of the TV show "Squid Game". A psychological/thriller and gambler anime.... but Kaiji is levels above Kakegurui.

Code Geass - you'll find it very similar to Death Note. Especially because of the MC and his goals. Masterpiece type of anime that's usually at the top of all the 'all-time' lists.

Classroom Of The Elite - If you like genius MCs, mind games and manipulation, you'll like this one.

The Promised Neverland - an excellent psychological thriller, also has that mystery element. Though you only need to watch season 1.

One Outs - this is a psychological thriller disguised as a sports anime. Think 'Yagami Light' as a baseball pitcher.

* For reference, some of my favorites are Death Note, Steins;Gate, Summertime Rendering, Parasyte, Made In Abyss.

* I've only watched these anime subbed. Cant vouch for dubbed.

1 upvotes on reddit
jdjdnfnnfncnc · OP · 4 months ago

I liked Code Geass. Lelouch was amazing, though I’d say he’s far more “correct” in his ethical framework than Light is.

Will have to check out the others. Never knew One Outs was a psychological thriller—-always thought it was just a baseball anime.

Funnily enough Code Geass is actually the last anime I watched dubbed, about 6 months ago. The dub was pretty good.

Thanks for the suggestions!

2 upvotes on reddit
millennium_hawkk · 4 months ago

No problem.

Yeah, after the first couple episodes of One Outs, you realize it's mainly about a guy outsmarting everyone who goes against him. He's a gambler.

As for Kaiji, it is generally advised to watch that one subbed. Particularly.

Monster (it can be a little slow, it is also long)

The Promised Neverland (season 1 only)

Gakkougurashi (this might be closer to psychological horror)

Tomodachi Game

Higashi no Eden

Talentless Nana

Angels of Death

Rainbow (it has some mature topics)

Try Ergo Proxy and Pluto. Both are cyberpunk-y mysteries with Ergo Proxy being more grungy and Pluto almost more noir-y (?)

More of a reach but you may also like Princess Tutu, Baccano, and Durarara. Princess Tutu is kinda like Madoka where it starts normalish but then spirals (although it spirals in a more meta way). Baccano and Drrr both have a large cast of characters and several plot lines that start weaving back over eachother.

2 upvotes on reddit
jdjdnfnnfncnc · OP · 4 months ago

I think I’d love Ergo Proxy and Pluto—I’ve just held off on Pluto because it was spoiled for me, so I’m trying to forget the spoiler lol (Idek if this so true, but I was told “half the characters die and the main character is a robot”).

Baccano was actually one of the first anime I watched, and enjoyed it. It didn’t blow me away, but I gave it a 7.5/10. It was fun, and I loved Isaac and Miria, but I sort of almost wish the story just focused on one character and had a more direct plot without all the jumping around tbh.

Will look into Princess Tutu and Durarara!

2 upvotes on reddit
HowlingWolvez · 4 months ago

For what it’s worth Pluto felt way more character driven for me where while the mystery was a major part of it, what kept me coming back was the character writing - I’m not sure if you’ve seen Dandadan but there’s one episode everyone raves about where they give a side character the spotlight and it’s arguably one of the greatest episodes of anime I’ve ever seen, and that was what a lot of Pluto felt like to me. Also the robot thing is barely a spoiler, it’s brought up VERY early on into the show. (But I totally get the spoiler thing, it happened to me with Code Geass,,,,)

Seeing Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent at the bottom kills me inside

I’ll recommend Monster. It’s an anime classic.

jdjdnfnnfncnc · OP · 4 months ago

Yeah I’m just not a fan of Satoshi Kon’s style tbh. I respect his work, and I love the themes he explores, but I need stories to have a clear plot and Paranoia Agent is a bit too episodic while Perfect Blue is a bit too thematic for me.

Please Suggest Your Favorite Psychological Thriller/Horror Anime!

Posted by attackonumaru · in r/Animesuggest · 3 years ago

Ones I've Already Seen are:

Death Note (one of my few 10/10's, I love it)

Another (watched the show and read the manga it was great, 8/10)

Parasyte (very good, 8-9/10)

Mirai Nikki (I really enjoyed Mirai Nikki especially bc it was one of the first shows I've seen, 8/10)

The Promised Never Land (I loved season 1, 8/10)

Tokyo Ghoul (loved it, one of my first shows so definitely personal bias 8/10)

School Days (which sucked IMO, but the ending was worth it)

I love this genre but I have yet to watch many shows w/ this kind of content, please suggest some! My personal favorite of this list is Death Note, any psychological horror show not in this list would be appreciated! I also am ok with gore

I really liked these and think they would fit what you're looking for:

{Psycho-Pass}

{Terror in Resonance}

{Dusk Maiden of Amnesia}

{Elfen Lied}

{B: The Beginning}

{The Future Diary}

These are maybe less of a good fit, but they're in the ballpark, and I really liked them:

{Shadows House}

{Brynhildr in the Darkness}

{Dorohedoro}

{Speed Grapher}

Also, I didn't really like them, but {Deadman Wonderland} and {Btooom!} are probably worth checking out.

I really really recommend the Higurashi manga or visual novel instead than the anime (manga is faster, visual novel doesn’t have any cuts and an amazing OST). The anime cuts out most of the meat, and meat is crucial in a mystery story. As my favorite thriller I also recommend the sequel to Higurashi, Umineko (manga or visual novel). They both have one of the best soundtracks in gaming and they both are deeply moving stories (it’s the piece of “anime media” that made me tear up more), but the anime really doesn’t do it justice (you can see all the people saying that the second season ruins the story)

Glad to find more thriller enjoyers 👍.

I finished Monster 2 years ago, and have since then searched for more shows like it. I’ve watched many psychological thriller animes since then, but I must say that there honestly haven’t been anyone that similar to Monster, it’s a very unique series. But I can recommend some other great thriller ones.

These are some of the series I watched right after monster: Berserk, Death Parade, Pluto (another Urasawa adaptation). I also started reading 21th century boys, which is a thriller manga by Urasawa that kind of gives of a similar vibe as Monster.

Lately I've become addicted to Psychological (if possible gore) anime such as When They Cry series, Mirai Nikki(I watched this long ago), Parasite, Summertime Render (I've read the manga already) , Tomadachi Game, and so on. If possible I like it if it is released in 2018 up till now since I'm confident I have watched some of the old one it's just too much to mention. Thank you

The Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyoukai) (a series of movies).

Overall it's a fairly dark story with moments of action, violence, some blood and gore alongside an ongoing mystery and a heavy supernatural element. It can appear confusing if watched in release order (which is recommended for first timers) because the story isn't told chronologically, but a rewatch in chronological order is extremely satisfying and helps to fill in any missing pieces of the narrative.

It's animated by ufotable so you just know it'll look great.

However, the movies were released prior to 2018 so maybe you've seen them already? It's not that well known (it deserves to be though!) so there's a fair chance you've not seen it.

Summarize

can someone recommend me some good psychological thriller ?

Posted by ggmikeyx · in r/anime · 3 years ago

Im looking for something similar to another...the promised neverland, etc.( that kind of vibe) . Basicly an horror/mystery anime with pychological factors, that keeps me guessing and wanting for more.

(Preferebly if it´s 12 or 24 ep long).

Also I have in my watch list : steins gate, erased and recently started pyscho-pass.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

(HiDive) 2006->Kai->Rei

(Crunchyroll) Gou->Sotsu

Two full-length mysteries, a main one and a sequel, averaging 40 episodes each. The definitive anime mystery/horror.

But if you want something short, try Gakkou Gurashi. Do NOT look it up in advance. No Pictures, no summaries, no reviews. Watch the first episode all the way through before making up your mind.
