TL;DR
Psychological Thrillers
Several animes are noted for their psychological elements akin to Death Note. Kaiji is highlighted for its intense mind games and psychological thrills, making it a favorite among fans seeking similar experiences [1:1],
[2:6]. Psycho-Pass, especially its first season, offers detective and mystery suspense with a cat-and-mouse dynamic
[2:3],
[3:4].
Strategic and Supernatural Elements
For those interested in the supernatural and strategic aspects, Code Geass stands out as a top recommendation. It features a protagonist with special powers engaged in strategic battles, reminiscent of Death Note's cerebral conflicts [2:1],
[5:1]. Terror in Resonance also provides a mix of mind games and puzzles, though opinions on its execution vary
[1:8],
[2:4].
Crime and Investigation
Animes that delve into crime and investigation with intelligent protagonists include Monster, which is often recommended for its gripping murder mystery and complex characters [3:3]. Bungo Stray Dogs and Moriarty the Patriot offer similar vibes with their focus on smart characters and intriguing plots
[1:4],
[2:6].
Unique Recommendations
Other unique recommendations include Parasyte, known for its thrilling narrative and character development [3:2], and Odd Taxi, a modern thriller praised for its storytelling
[5:1]. Madoka Magica is suggested for its creative visuals and compelling plot twists, although it diverges from the typical Death Note style
[5:1].
These recommendations provide a variety of options for fans of Death Note looking to explore similar themes and storytelling styles in anime.
Cat and Mouse chase with supeernatural element is how I would phrase it. Also in comic books and Marvel Movies we often see how super heroes get super abilities and hide it from their family and friends and do good. But if you used the same premise for super villains, and how they use their ability to sort of do harm, and hide it from loved ones, we get the Death Note feeling. Also the brilliant mind games and unique execution of DN makes it one off and unlike anything out there in anime.
Code Geass is the closest I’ve seen.
Perhaps Bungo Stray Dogs? It’s on my watchlist but from a trusted source.
Kaiji has similar levels of psychological thriller action and even has the same composer as Death Note. It's not totally the same but you'll enjoy it if your favourite part of Death Note was the mind games and outsmarting others.
Watch the sub.
Kaiji is so underrated. Definitely this one
A little bit of a slow burn but what a masterpiece.
Second this
Is it concerning that this is the first time I've noticed Ryuk in this poster.
Oh shit..
No, because I just did too 😀
Terror in Resonance, Inuyashiki :)
Guess I just need to look more carefully at things
I just like how grounded in reality it is. And the mind games along with the monologues. So any anime that has all of these three?
I got death note vibes from code geass. Mainly with a similar character dynamic and a special power that the MC has. Also mechs.
But code geass is far from grounded.
Yeah but it's similar to death note in any way. But with better ending. And mecha fight.
And boobies.
damn Code Geass' mother must be proud
Psycho Pass (season 1). Has detective/mystery/suspense with psychological cat and mouse vibe going on.
Terror in Resonance
Only 12 episodes but it’s pretty enjoyable in terms of the mind games and watching the police try to solve the puzzles. Had a controversial ending but I liked it. Don’t believe it has any monologues though.
For me Terror in Resonance was a show brimming with potential early on, but completely falls apart the moment Five is introduced. She is probably my least favorite anime character of all time, not only because she is intentionally dislikable (which isn't always a bad thing), nor just because she's poorly written and voice acted, but because her character drags down the entire show due to issues that all stem directly from her inclusion.
Monster
Promised Neverland s1
Moriaty the Patriot
Kaiji (I recommend this one most)
Promise never land isn't good
I think it’s pretty good. I don’t love it but it has the mind games that OP is asking for. I also only recommended s1 so they’ll avoid the the terrible season 2.
Monster
I recommend it too
Kaiji is always the correct recommendation
i would like an anime that has the same vibe as deathnote
crime , mystery , investigation and hyper intellegent protaginists
Oh god, the most common question among anime newbies and the one which got me into this addiction.
Death Note is by far my favourite Anime ever, and therefore I have watched tons of "Death Note - like" shows. Let me suggest you my favourite ones.
Monster
Psycho Pass
Code Geass
Kaiji
Parasyte
The Promised Neverland
I could go on, but these are the ones that I would consider the top ones. They incorporate the same elements from Death Note (and the ones you've listed), in very unique fashions.
You may enjoy Monster by Naoki Urasawa, murder, mystery, awesome plot line and characters.
Psycho-Pass
ID: Invaded
Talentless nana.
code geass,
one outs,
Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor,
no game no life,
there are a couple of more, i recommend checking this out, although some of the recommended are not really similar(e.g.:i fell asleep and dropped "Monster") :
Looking for similar dramatic and exciting thriller anime that I could put on while enjoying a snack. Really enjoyed death note and the constant suspense and how toe characters drew out each other to their maximum limits was really fascinated with the shinigami as well as other quirks within the show. Looking for some similar recommendations or more insight as to how I can better curate my taste
Code Geass has similar mental warfare but with more action and mechas.

Kings Game, Future Diary , Babylon, When They Cry (Higurashi), Angels of Death
Tomodachi game.
First season of Kakeguri was like this, doing game theory. It shifted a little for season 2.
Bungo Stray Dogs has a bit of the gamesmanship and brings back the supernatural element.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is great military minds clashing. There's an OG and an ongoing remake which is (apparently) very faithful.
Lol, Kaguya-sama is two very smart teenagers that love each other using their wiles to get the other to confess first. It's adorable.
Psycho-pass is more thriller, a little less cerebral (as if only high IQ can understand Death Note). (U/Dys)topian future with something a bit like thought police. A common recommendation for DN enjoyers.
WARNING: I tried Classroom of the Elite because the premise sounded like it should be Light/L mind games in a classroom setting. I have been sorely disappointed. It's tween drama centered around one sociopath.
Re tastes: find out if you like shonen, romance, fantasy, sport, comedy, music, or slice of life. Pick a genre, scroll from the most popular downward until you find a synopsis that doesn't repel you and try it out. I'd say to give it a full season unless it's absolutely repellant to you. Pay attention to what tropes/aspects work for you and what don't. Then get better recs from there. Lots of preferences to learn. How you feel about fan service, unlikeable MCs, MCs in different ages (school kids or not), fight scenes and to what level, talk no jutsu, even animation styles that you might not be able to abide.
I'm obsessed with Death Note! Basically I love anime with great twists, mind-blowing plot that keeps me hooked from the beginning to the end. And Death Note did it wonderfully.
Can someone please recommend some other titles that great please?
Code Geass is a masterpiece with one of the greatest main characters of all time and a suspenseful plot. Probably exactly what you’re looking for.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Monster is a psychological slow burn thriller that is considered one of the best of its kind.
Odd Taxi is a beloved modern thriller.
Madoka Magica is an amazing series with creative visuals, compelling characters and excellent storytelling. Watch the 3rd movie after the series.
Madoka Magica
Wow, many suggest Code Geass and Monster, and they are also the two that stand out in your list (I mean I will look into these others of course, but for this weekend, probably those twooooo. Thank you so much!!!!
Yeah like everyone says, code geass is your best bet. Theres a reason the two get compared a lot to each other.
I already can't wait to check it out. Honestly, I haven't heard about it, but mostly because those around me aren't that interested in the genre, so I couldn't ask for any suggestion.
Thank youuuu!
Code Geass.
Though, if it's great twists and mind-blowing plot that you want, Attack on Titan fits the bill really well too.
Code Geass
It loooks tempting, wwill definitely check it outttt this weekend (I don't trust my discipline much and the series seems long :)))
Monster.
It's great to find this subreddit, seems like you all know exactly what I'm looking for. Thank youuuu!!!!!
Like the suspense, and brain used in the story was so good. The surprises were so good. Any other similar kinda anime?
Code Geass
Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor
Parastye: The Maxim
Classroom Of The Elite
Summertime Render
The Promised Neverland
One Outs
Have you seen Re:Zero? I liked Summertime Rendering but Re:Zero was honestly more enjoyable for me.
Yes, I've seen two seasons of Re:Zero. Started out promising, but the plot goes all over the place. Also, the MC has no redeeming qualities. Doesn't get any smarter or stronger... and he's a simp for a girl he barely met and barely shows any effection back to him.
I second Code Geass!
Code Geass
Monster
Monster, Code Geass, Steins Gate, Psycho Pass are the closest you will get. Attack on Titan has the plot complexity but the vibes are different.
Anything with a similar, dark, and mature story, with a lot of mystery, and likeable characters. I'd love to hear any of your suggestions. I've likely seen all the mainstream show you're thinking. But feel free to suggest anything.
The promised neverland, in the sense that it heavily revolved around strategy and tactics to outsmart the other party
Parasyte, maybe
High School of the Dead, if you really don't mind mindless ecchi
Seen both unfortunately. I really loved Parasyte. HotD.... not so much.
You had to at least love the military / guns otaku dude.
Code geass, idk
Monster.
Psycho Pass is dark and more mature. The characters are flawed but I think generally likable.
Ergo Proxy is another. It's a bit older and I haven't seen it in a while though.
I want an anime with the mind games, twisted morality and genius main characters like death note. A lot of people recommended code geass and I didn't like it, the characters were mostly boring, beyond a point it was just "who has the bigger mech", had too many asspulls, was filled with plot holes, and really wasn't that logical
Try B: The Beginning and maybe Bungou Stray Dogs.
Liar Game. It's a manga, though, with no anime adaptation.
Kaiji
The Promised Neverland
>mind games, twisted morality and genius main characters
The Promised Neverland.

Hey guys, I just finished watching Death Note—it’s the first anime of my life, and I’m in love with this genre. Sadly, I can’t seem to move away from investigative or crime thriller anime. I did receive some recommendations like Hunter x Hunter and Attack on Titan, but for some reason, they don’t match the vibe of Death Note, in my opinion.
So I’d love to get some great recommendations in a similar genre and shorter ones
I know how you feel. Death Note was my first anime, and the only other anime that matched its level or surpassed it even was Code Geass.
thanks bro
Moriarty the patriot, Psycho Pass, Steins gate, Death parade, Monster, Tomodachi game
You can watch Monster, Code Geass, Terror in Resonance, Erased, Another, Tomodachi Game...
Steins;Gate, trust me its peak fiction and better than death note (for me)
For me it never fell off like Death Note did; that's why, I think Steins;Gate has no flaws
For animes with similar themes as death note, I would suggest the following. Some are set in modern world and some are in a more fantasy or historical setting. But you should probably give yourself a few days of break in order to move on from a great watch because you’ll most likely look for it in everything you’re currently watching and might end up disappointed.
Note I’m not limiting it to only anime’s since I think the story transcends the medium.
I recommend Monster, Erased, The Promised Neverland. Monster is a little hard to get into than Death Note but it is just as good and it's more realistic. I just finished the show recently and it was an experience. The intro is a banger as well. Erased and TPN (second season sucks tho. I say read the manga after finishing the anime) are also really good. They lean more on the horror fantasy-ish side like DN.
I had to quit monster midway. It was so boring and nonsensical
Just a while ago I finished it. It was pretty boring for some parts but the story pulled me in at the start. Then the plot seemed to be going nowhere, and as we get more info on the "unbeliavably horrible monster in human skin" it comes pretty clear he's not that bad given the circumstances he grew up in.
I felt like the author didn't really know where to go with his story in the midway and wrapped up the huge hype of the monster in a pretty weak way in the ending scene imo.
Also, I don't think it has anything to do with Death Note.
Can you tell me why season 2 of TPN sucks? I watched it and thought it was alright, not season 1 quality but still fine (also on volume 3 of the manga)
Erased is badass
You would have to identify what you loved about Deathnote.
If it's the high intelligence: Stien's Gate
The Shinigami try: Chainsaw Man
DN being wildy unique of an anime : Odd Taxi
The Build Up : Parasite
Characters thinking out loud: Scrubs
Breaking Bad felt really weird to me. I guess it would be a dark comedy. I didn't like a lot of it, but I also liked a lot of it. Mixed feelings. Mr. Robot is great, if you are prepared to want to die because of the darkness.
No one mentioning death parade?
Death Parade isn't great, but it was actually better than I expected. I wish there were more of it, but I hesitate recommending it to others.
They’re not like exactly the same, but in my mind I have Death Note, Breaking Bad, Monster, and Columbo in a bubble together. They’re all compelling crime mystery thrillers with plenty of twists and strategic cat & mouse games! Highly recommend all of them :3
Columbo. Ha! I haven't seen that in decades. That is a great show, if you are into the Matlock/Perry Mason-type shows.
It’s such a fun show! I discovered it this year and it’s terrific and I can’t recommend it enough
Animes similar to Death Note
Here are some anime recommendations similar to Death Note:
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Steins;Gate
Monster
Paranoia Agent
Psycho-Pass
Takeaway: These series share similar themes of psychological tension, moral ambiguity, and complex characters, making them great picks for fans of Death Note. Each offers a unique twist on the psychological thriller genre, ensuring engaging storytelling and thought-provoking narratives.
