Monster
"Monster" is frequently mentioned as a top choice for mystery anime. It's praised for its complex narrative and psychological depth, making it a standout in the genre [1:9],
[2:3],
[3:6]. While some debate whether it's purely a mystery due to its emphasis on character exploration, its gripping plot and suspenseful storytelling make it a must-watch for fans of the genre
[2:5].
Death Note
"Death Note" is another classic that often comes up in discussions about mystery anime. Although not a traditional mystery, its cat-and-mouse dynamic between the protagonist and antagonist provides a thrilling experience with elements of suspense and intrigue [1:4],
[2:3]. Its popularity is well-deserved due to its intense plot twists and moral dilemmas.
Psycho-Pass
"Psycho-Pass" is recommended for those interested in a blend of mystery, thriller, and dystopian themes. The first season, in particular, is highlighted for its engaging storyline involving a mystery killer, although later seasons receive mixed reviews [4:1],
[5:6]. Its exploration of societal control and human psychology adds layers to its mystery elements.
Erased (Boku dake ga Inai Machi)
"Erased" combines mystery with time travel, focusing on a protagonist trying to prevent past crimes. It's appreciated for its emotional depth and suspenseful narrative, though opinions on the ending are divided [4:4],
[5:2]. Despite this, it's widely regarded as a compelling watch.
Higurashi: When They Cry
"Higurashi" is recommended for those who enjoy horror intertwined with mystery. It offers a chilling atmosphere and an intricate plot that slowly unravels the truth behind a series of gruesome events [4:5],
[2:1]. The visual novel is suggested for a more comprehensive experience, but the anime adaptation remains popular.
Odd Taxi
"Odd Taxi" is a newer entry that's gaining attention for its unique storytelling and complex characters. It's described as one of the most intricate single-season animes, blending mystery with humor and social commentary [5:1],
[5:5]. While opinions vary, many viewers find its unconventional approach refreshing.
These selections offer a range of styles and themes within the mystery genre, catering to different tastes from psychological thrillers to horror-infused narratives. Whether you're looking for classic mind games or innovative storytelling, these animes provide a rich tapestry of mystery to explore.
I haven't really seen many mystery animes, other than Detective Conan, tho i didn't really think it was all that mysterious tbh. I'm not sure if this helps, but I was maybe thinking of something along the lines of Knives Out, since that's the only mystery movie I've ever seen.
Edit: so far I have (just for my reference)

Monster by Naoki Urasawa
Sounds cool
I need something that is fast-paced and hectic. Something that also has dark atmospheres and is scary at times. An underrated anime would be nice.
+1 The best mystery anime in recent memory for me. Really dope twist at the end, a bit like, "The Usual Suspects."
Best mystery anime imo is Monster. Re zero and summertime rendering have some cool mystery elements as well and ofc death note is a classic even tho it isn’t much of a mystery
Those are great. I would just like to add Bungo stray dogs to that list.
I don’t consider Bungo stray dogs to be too much of a mystery but it does definitely have mystery elements, probably as much as re zero so it def counts. It’s a great anime anyway
Eh, Monster is great but is it really mystery? There would not be element of mystery at all if the story didn't unnecessarily place a lot of emphasis in the alleged importance of understanding Johan's origin, then placing an even more convoluted twist whenever they found out whatever they thought they were looking for.
It's like psychological mystery but I think it's more of a thriller
Breh I like Re:Zero and all but that's 100% not what this dude is looking for
You might really enjoy Undead Girl Murder Farce which is currently airing this season. I didn't have it on my radar at all but picked it up after hearing good things about the first couple of episodes and it's turned into my dark horse pick of the summer.
Came here to rec this. I agree, dark horse of summer. I had never heard of it either and just randomly started it tonight...Can't stop already binged 8 episodes. I'm really liking it so far. Mystery, historical fiction, comedy, action, characters are interesting, hitting all the right spots. Recommend.
-Golden Kamuy is kind if a mystery and it's super awesome. One of my favorites.
-Higurashi: When They Cry
-In/Spector
I was just about to recommend that one. The first episodes were confusing as hell and most of the times I didn't know what was happening but the ending was amazing
I liked this so much more than I expected to. It felt like a love letter to American suspense movies.
They way how every characters story perfectly intertwined with each others and came together at the end was extremely well executed
I watched Monster many years ago and haven't found a gem that can be as good as this.
I'd like great plot, good mystery, great investigative work, some sort of plot twist if applicable. Overall great story
Any recommendations you know? I watched Psycho Pass, Steins Gate, Death Note and more..
Thanks
hmm Lord of mysteries? It's airing rn and I would recommend watching with dub for most people. It's ending soon and the overview for season 1 is great so far. Highly recommended.
Apothecary diaries. Psychopass.
Ron Kamohashi's Forbidden Deductions

Karakuri Zoushi Ayatsuri Sakon
Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo
Ghost Hunt
Thanks! Will check these out
You simply will not find anything as good as monster, that's just how it is
+1
I’m looking for something of that genre possibly involving a mystery killer and finding out who it is, with a great plot.
Also does Psycho Pass deal with the mystery killer spectrum ?
Psycho pass has a murderer and mystery stuff, but they show who the killer is.
Erased, steins gate, shiki, shinsekai yori and b the beginning. They should work well for you.
I would highly recommend Psycho Pass (season 1 is enough). Also Paranoia Agent. Not necessarily about a mystery killer, but it is a great psychological thriller and has a lot of the same aspects that make a show with a mystery killer so great.
I also second psycho pass
You're probably looking for erased, its about a kidnapping mystery I liked it 8/10
Ending sucks though.
That's opinionated tho, personally I liked the ending, it would've been unrealistic to make kayo wait all those years for him to wake up
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is exactly what you're looking for. Although the anime is also good, I'd recommend the visual novel more for tighter storytelling, characterization and more of a true horror vibe than "crazy cute anime girls slashing people" reputation that the anime adaptation has given it.
B the Beginning, Ajin, Baccano, AOT, Future Diary, Deadman Wonderland, Gosick, Berserk, Spiral, King's Game, Gantz, Inuyashiki
Which anime has the best character development, a deep writing that leaves a mark, and suspense/mystery to keep me invested in the story?
For example, Attack on Titan has all the above. I have already watched it along with Code Geass, Death Note, FMA Brotherhood, Evangelion, Hunter X Hunter, LOGH.
What else is really worth exploring?
I really liked Another if you want some horror/gore with your mystery.
Summertime Render is a relatively newer one, but I adored it. I don't gush often, but this is one I had to get my buddy to watch.
I was also a huge fan of Erased. I pretty much predicted the plot twist towards the end, but it didn't make it any less enjoyable to watch throughout. This is a bit more surreal and feelsy of an option.
Ergo Proxy
Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex
Ghost in the Shell Arise
The Perfect Insider
Perfect Blue
Darker Than Black
Monster
Psycho-Pass
Paprika
Gleipnir
Houseki No Kuni (best characters imo)
I never thought about it but you're right! Everything in the Ghost In The Shell franchise is actually pursuing some type of mystery.
With the caveats:
Ignore season 2 of Darker than Black.
Ignore everything after season 1 of Psycho-Pass.
I watched half of these. Houseki no Kuni is an all time favorite for me. I will try watching the rest! Thanks.
Ugh, The Perfect Insider was so good until the mystery was solved and the solution was nonsense of the highest order. Other that that, yes.
Like half the shows OP listed have shitty twists/reveals and awful endings. So, it’ll fit right in.
Damn seeing Darker than BLACK on here made me so happy. Istfg you don’t see anyone talking about it these days
Hyouka. It's a mystery genre it is most beautiful potrayed form of animation. It's one of my favourites of all time sad there is only one season
Odd Taxi. Go watch the 13 episodes and all the audio dramas (I believe the audio drama with english sub is on youtube).
It's one of the most complex 1-cour anime to have existed.
And out of the multiple mysteries they build up on the show one mystery turned out to be a joke. A pretty good joke actually.
edit: this post got the most upvote atm despite other comments mentioning many classics and more popular titles. I'm happy to see Odd Taxi getting LOT of love.
I just started odd taxi and it's the best thing ever. Every episode I'm like HUH!?
I recommend watching the show without any expectations. I watched Odd Taxi bc of glowing reviews and ended up disappointed. It’s not that bad, 7/10 imo, just not exceptional like some praise it to be.
I didn’t like MC and half the characters. MC comes across as self righteous and knows everything while droning on in monotone.
What are some good mystery animes. I enjoyed watching death note and monster and am looking for more of the sort
Hyouka is great, but it's way more slice of life-ish and not a crazy mystery anime like Death Note or anything
I like most mysteries so I don't mind if it's slice of life-ish
Gosick
Thanks. Looked into it and seems like i'd like it.
erased
watched the live action a while back and was good. Will definitely watch the anime version.
Shin Sekai Yori
Another
More psychological:
Ergo Proxy
Psycho Pass
Another seems really good. Thanks for the recomendation!
Definitely check out shin sekai yori
surprised that no one is recommending the Kara no Kyoukai series. Top tier mystery both episodically, and with overarching story.
Hey guys I'm someone who loves the mystery/crime/thriller genres and I've watched and loved shows like death note, tomodachi game, Moriarty the patriot, undead murder farce, Ron kamonohashi's forbidden deductions.
I'm fine with both shows and movies and mix of genres like a horror-mystery or psychological-thrilers as well, and I also like animes like the apothecary diaries which was something like the lucifer TV series as in it had a separate event in each episode, but also had an overarching story (I'm sorry if I didn't phrase that correctly).
So is there any show you guys would recommend?
Psycho Pass is one of my favorite anime ever. It's got a mix of action, mystery and philosophy in a cyberpunk setting. Admittedly the 2nd season is pretty weak compared to the first but the movies and 3rd season that come afterwards are a lot better.
I've heard some good things about psycho pass.
I'll check it out and thanks for the recommendation.
Monster
I'm currently watching it and I'm finding it to be an interesting slow burn. Thanks anyway.
Another
I'll try giving it a watch and thanks for the recommendation.
Erased
It seems quite interesting and thanks a lot for the recommendation.
Yeah
I have:

And to no one's surprise, Gintama won for Best Comedy Anime. Now, which anime do y'all think is the Best Mystery Anime?
Rules:
Is this good? I’ve seen it on soooo many lists, but I don’t know what it’s about.
It is so fucking good. It's hard to describe without spoiling anything because it's a supremely suspenseful thriller.
But the basic premise is that a highly renowned doctor who is tired of the politics at his hospital chooses to care for a young boy over the local mayor because the child's case needs his skills more than the mayor's. This decision ruins the life he had been building and sends the doctor down a path that forever changes how he views the world. The story is full of life-threatening secrets and political intrigue.
If only 20th century boys got an anime... would easily clear this category. Monster is amazing too though.
How far do I have to go before the plot actually develops 😭😭😭
GOATED series
Detective Conan, or Case Closed depending on which you know it by, is easily hands down what should be the winner here.
100% show is just Mistery after Mistery xD, even an opening it’s called Misterious eyes
Death Note's partially mystery, but that's really not the focus 'cause it ain't mysterious when you already know both sides.
Yeah, more of a suspense thriller than a mystery. Not a good pick imo.
Heavenly Delusion
This is the way. Great show.
monster 2007
death note
parasyte
darker than black
black clover
terror in resonance
pycho pass
Black clover is considered mystery/thriller?
Parasyte was awesome, I think I'll rewatch it here soon. I've only watched it once, not long after it came out. It seems like it isn't mentioned nearly enough. Man, I can't even remember if I watched the sub or dub . . . I think I actually watched the dub.
bro you need to rewatch it. Dub is way better. The show is honestly amazing. One of the best psychological series I have watched.
Erased is great. And just 12 episodes.
Migi and Dali. Highly underrated. Don't get fooled by the first 3 episodes.
Summer Time rendering. Great.
Unsure about best, but Deadman Wonderland and Shiki were pretty good.
It's so sad that Deadman Wonderland never got a 2nd season.
Deadman wonderland was all flash and 0 substance imo
Yeah from what I remember the concept is really cool but never used properly
Shiki is top tier
Baccuno!
Thriller:
Mystery:
These are basically all my 8s and 9s, and I also like a ton of other shows/movies, but wouldn't call them hard favorites.
best mystery animes
Here are some top mystery anime recommendations:
Steins;Gate
Death Note
The Promised Neverland
Paranoia Agent
Monster
Hyouka
Recommendation: If you're new to mystery anime, start with Death Note for its iconic status and gripping storyline. For something more psychological, Steins;Gate is a fantastic choice that combines mystery with science fiction elements. Each of these series offers a unique take on the mystery genre, so you can choose based on your preferences!
