Darker than Black
"Darker than Black" is frequently recommended for its anti-hero characters. The series features protagonists who operate in morally ambiguous areas, making decisions that are not always aligned with traditional heroism [1:1],
[2:1]. Hei, the main character, is a Contractor who works as an assassin and spy, embodying the anti-hero archetype.
Fate/Zero
Kiritsugu Emiya from "Fate/Zero" is another classic example of an anti-hero. His methods and motivations are often questionable, as he is willing to sacrifice anything for his vision of world peace [2:1],
[2:2]. This complexity makes him a compelling character for those interested in morally grey protagonists.
Overlord
"Overlord" features Ainz Ooal Gown, an overpowered character who is technically a villain but operates with a certain level of anti-hero charisma [3:5],
[4:6],
[5:2]. The series explores themes of power and morality, as Ainz navigates his role in a new world.
Moriarty the Patriot
"Moriarty the Patriot" offers a fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes universe by focusing on William James Moriarty as the protagonist. He is portrayed as a sympathetic anti-hero who uses his intellect to fight against societal injustices [2:3],
[4:1],
[5:5].
Psycho-Pass
"Psycho-Pass" is known for its enforcers, who are essentially anti-heroes working within a dystopian system [2:2]. The series delves into complex moral questions about justice and free will, making it a must-watch for fans of anti-hero narratives.
Other Notable Mentions
These series offer a variety of anti-hero characters, each with unique motivations and ethical dilemmas, providing rich narratives for viewers interested in exploring the darker sides of heroism.
I already watched aot, code geass, guilty crown, death note and Tokyo ghoul, any more ?
Most of the main characters in Darker than Black are anti-heroes. I’d recommend you watch it. It’s actually quite good, and isn’t talked about enough.
Looking for characters like Lelouch, Eren, Thorfinn or Light. That's my fav kind of MC. Only Gintoki and Ichigo rank higher than them for me personally.
Thanks in advance!
Anti-Heroes:
Fate/Zero (Kiritsugu)
Madoka Magica (Homura)
Terror in Resonance (Nine & Twelve)
Garden of Sinners (Shiki & Touko)
Psycho-Pass (pretty much every enforcer)
Give these a go openings/trailers are linked to give you a feel.
So I'm a spider, so what? Maybe. It's not clear yet but is definitely flirting with that direction.
Overlord
Kiritsugu Emiya
Nine and Twelve from Terror in Resonance
Accelerator from To aru series is great.
Hei from Darker than Black
Kyoko Sakura from Madoka series is also a good anti-hero.
This is something that has been posted a lot and the suggestions are always the same and I refuse to believe that those are the only ones out there.
I've watched a few anime with ridiculously over powered mc's and I enjoy them. Not everyone's favorite genre but I like it. I am looking for an anime where the MC is an anti hero and doesn't really like anyone. Preferably because he was betrayed or is seeking revenge on someone or something. If there is some try hard, "power of friendship goon" he shits on during the series that's a plus. Arifureta had a MC like this that I enjoyed as well as Shield Hero. Also Godtsuya from Irregular of course. Grisaia was another series I enjoyed for reference. Romance is cool if its there but manly indifferent about Romance.
Here is my MAL profile with things I've seen if you want to look at that as well, and see anime of this genre for yourself, if you also happen to be looking.

I appreciate any suggestions, and to be clear I'm looking for anime series and not manga or light novels. Not against them just not my thing. Subs and dubs are both fine. Thanks in advance!
Not quite the main character, but {Gankutsuou}

Thanks for the suggestion! Haven’t seen it and I’ll check it out
One Outs - maybe what you'd like? He is usually always distrusted and kind of hated due to a blunt attitude. The setting is baseball, and MC is very OP as a pitcher, but also as a schemer.
Ive seen this one mentioned a lot but I’ve never been into sports anime so I’ve ignored it. I’ll give it a shot tho since it is basically everything I’m looking for, thanks for the recommendation!
There was a seasonal airing around the time of Rent-a-Girlfriend and Uzaki chan about that - something about a demon lord school or something. Man really killed someone with the beating of his heart
Might have been misfit of demon king academy or something. Watched it. Not bad, enjoyed it for the most part.
That's it, it seemed like a parody of fantasy anime with the op protagonist, kind of like one punch man a little
Well, based on OverlySarcastic definition of anti-hero, I’d say:
Thanks for the reply! Seen all of these already. These all have elements of what I was looking for tho!
I wanna watch an anime where the mc is the villain or is just morally grey and i need some underground opinions no deathnote or code geass I’ve watched all those, it doesn’t even have to have an anime adaptation im fine with manga
Overlord
Came here to say this. Watch overlord it takes a few episodes for the MC to fully embrace it but it ends up being really good season 2 is my favorite so far.
The movie is brutal too.
Super crooks
Moriarty the Patriot
seconding Moriarty the Patriot!
Deathnote
S1 of Vinland Saga is definitely this.
Talentless nana.
Getting real sick of the whole "You're a mass murdering terrorist who's killed thousands but since you were abused as child you deserve redemption" naw just give the villains what they deserve 😒
If you have any recs with Anti-heroes pls share
Redo of Healer is one of the most brutal anti-hero examples. It is heavy ecchi with rape and such, so be warned.
Hellsing is a good anti-hero as well.
Overlord features an MC that has no mercy, though he is technically a villain.
Thanks for recommending Hellsing and Overlord. I already saw Redo of Healer when it first came out and was traumatised 😭
Redo of healer is hard to watch even for experienced anime watchers lol
The Eminence in Shadow (isekai with villain as mc)
Overlord (isekai with villain as mc aswell)
Redo of Healer (pretty dark, pretty edgy at some points, but good)
Code Geass (hes is getting a villain over time with deep charackter development)
Classroom of the Elite (mc could be seen as villain, well test it yourself)
Death Note (he doesnt consider himself a villain and thinks hes right, but well)
Love of Kill (not really an anti hero but a assassin in modern age)
Reign of the Seven Spellblades (boys mother gets killed and he wants revenge/anti hero)
I think you are just tired of shounen. Jump into Seinen. Unless you want seinen hero in a shounen. That's a little bit different.
So many anime frustrations can be solved by learning the manga demographics.
People bitch about fanservice in everything bc they have never watched Josei.
People bitch about no killing and the power of friendship bc they have only watched shonen.
Preaching to the choir.
I read (watch) some of really stupid takes awhile ago about Tanjiro from Demon Slayer being too goody goody.
And you listen and you can't help but think that the person is slamming on Tanjiro's character simply because they read Berserk a moment ago and are salty because Tanjiro isn't acting like Guts.
I don't only watch shonen, i read all types of manga it's just difficult finding some good ones and i want recs from other ppl
I prefer seinen over shonen i read a lot of it, and yes I'm looking for a seinen hero type story as well Something like One Punch Man but more serious
Moriarty the Patriot
Arifureta.
MC has no issue killing bad guys. He'll kill anyone and anything that gets in his way. He is ruthless toward his enemies. S1's adaptation kinda sucks and there are some bad CGI parts but if you can look past it, it's actually a good story overall. Especially the LNs. S2 did a lot better with pacing and animation. S3 is on the way too.
though youre technically right the dub in my country for s2 sucked so hard cuz they replaced hajimes va...
When one of the hero's is such a massive asshole to everyone around them that they are basically a villain. Usually there will be a redemption arc for characters like this, but not always.
Amai Mask from One Punch Man
Endeavor from My Hero Academia (at the start of the series)
This is cheating when he was a villain for the most part of three arcs.
Thats why I used a picture of Vegeta from the Cell Saga
Back in early series MHA, Bakugo was a menace, and I'm not talking about his infamous suicide dare to Midoriya
The League of Villains literally tried to recruit him. 😂😂 And it made perfect sense.
Yeah he's basically Rex Splode but if he was terrible, and overrated both in-universe and out-of-universe
Alucard (Hellsing Ultimate/HUA)
...he preceded to tilt every painting on his way here.
Gamma Jack was actually under watch from the NSA because they were afraid with his belief of supers as the supreme race and megalomania, he would become a supervillain. (The Incredibles)
My absolute favorite of the files
Followed by Dynaguy for being so damn insecure
Minotaur Space Marine chapter from 40k. Even among the morally dubious at best space marines the Minotaurs stand out as being particularly egregious, with abnormally high rates of: involvement in civil wars within the Imperium (including against other space marines), lying about their troop numbers and locations, serving the high lords of terras every whim and essentially being they private space marines, staggeringly high rates of civilian casualties and collateral damage (a marine was noted to have said that 60% civilan casualty rate is very low for missions involving them), they will steal relics and supplies from other imperium forces and horde them for themselves, and last but not least, one of their commanders has a specially made gun that replaces the normal high explosive charges in bolter rounds with solid slugs to more easily shoot through hostages to reach the hostage taker.
From the same universe
The Marines Malevolent
They are the biggest assholes among the space marines. It's not even that they don't care about civilian casualties, it seems like they're outright trying to get civilians killed. Hell, the inquisition has been investigating these guys for years but haven't done anything, because even though they're willing to bomb refugee camps and antagonize both other space marines and imperial guard commanders, they aren't corrupted by Chaos
Art from here
I've seen Deathnote, Aot, Berserk, Code Geass, Vinland Saga, Monster, and Pyscho Pass so far. I just need to find a good thriller anime to watch tonight. Thank you !
Here's a few I haven't seen mentioned yet;
{Dororo} dark supernatural adventure
{Dorohedoro} crazy dystopian adventure
{Satsuriku no Tenshi} psychological thriller *my son says the dub is actually ok on this show, idk as I only watched sub.
{Heion Sedai no Idaten tachi} very full of anti heros. But there is gratuitous violence/ gore and lots of blood.
{Hoozuki no Reitetsu} if you want your dark to be funny. It's absolutely hilarious if you like satirical comedy and MC is most def an anti hero!
{Scums Wish} if you want to try a very dark romance. There's no anti hero, but def hard to tell if there's any good guys in it. But they're young so they may grow into good people.
{Cowboy Bebop} adventure
{Samurai Champloo} adventure
{Gintama} a total package series. Feels, fights and the absolute best comedy of any shonen series.
{Akira} movie. Very very very cool dystopian future scape and pretty much the gateway drug for us western consumers of anime.
{Sword of the Stranger} movie. Nameless samurai having cool fights.
Wishing many happy hours of watching awesome shows to all!!✌️

thank you for coming through with this list 😎. think Akira going to be the first one I'll watch from it
That's not an anti hero, that's just villain. Still good tho
Amazed no one has mentioned {Parasyte}, one of my all time favorites and just crazy twist after crazy twist.
One of my Netflix available favorites, but is it anti hero?
The secondary character is definitely an anti-hero.
It's definitely not hero
Can't believe nobody said Overlord yet! Check it out!
Will also recommend Darker Than Black. In my top 5 of all time.
Gankutsuou, its based on The Count of Monte Cristo
darker than black
The constant heroic characters in almost all anime get repetitive in my opinion..be it a Shounen or Seinen. It seems the MC being "good" is basically a requirement.
I would like to see more morally ambigious protagonists but the Japanese don't seem to be a fan of that (unlike americans). Thoughts?

Need more ??
How do Darker than Black, Gantz and Gangsta, Bungo Stray Dogs etc. have anti heroes? Don't remember the protagonists doing any evil stuff in those shows.
Seems like (apart from Hellsing and Black Lagoon) you just mentioned random shows that don't have a Shounen esque MC
Hei kills people for a living
Dazai is a psyco and a former mafia member.
Gantz has no heroes.
Did we watch the same shows ?
You don't have to do evil stuff to be an anti-hero. Hei from Darker Than Black does loads of morally questionable things. Same with the MCs from Gangsta
The protagonist of Gankutsuou is a little kid who is definitely Lawful Good.
I wish there were more protagonists like Kiritsugu from Fate/Zero. He fights for "good", but to get there he does whatever he thinks is necessary without batting an eye.
And I think they got him right. But a lot of anime portraying these anti-hero characters fall into the trap of making them too edgy for my taste.
So yeah, same here, but depending on how they go about it.
Yeah Kiritsugu was a pretty compelling and refreshing character for an anime. Would rather have more like him than the same old Shounen cliche who never does anything questionable
I think they like it as much as Americans do - most popular American movies now are about superheroes with the moral complexity of a shoe.
There are tons of antiheroes in LNs and manga at least.
I was talking more about american tv shows with shows like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Dexter etc.
Don't think there are many anime like that
Somebody in this thread posted a pretty big list, to which I would also add 91 Days.
Also if you want a manga Dexter, try Brutal.
I just wish they quit ruining their anti-heroes. Way too often they start off with an MC that is morally ambiguous, only to soften him up, often with the help of moe.
Personally, not really. Antiheroes are often just used to shovel edgy crap into a series whenever we do see them. They can and have been done well, but this feels like the exception not the rule.
Rather than seeing more I'd just like to see them be less crap on average when they're used.
Like the title says i'm looking for a anti-hero who isn't a pussy. I've watched about half of the popular ones and the other half are trash. So I need a recommendation idc if its old i can still watch it.
Inuyashiki, well there's a grandfather as protagonist. But the antagonist would fit to what you're looking for.
I dont know if she counts as one but Kakegurui has yumeko jabami which is more the mc then the "mc"
You're really going to need to list off the ones you've watched, dude... you know, before someone suggests Death Note for the millionth time.
I said popular
Did you watch it or no? Post your MAL or list what you have watched.
Define "popular"? And you said you watched about half, so it would still be nice to have a list. I'd recommend going to MyAnimeList or aniList and build yourself one. That way you can keep track and have something to show people so you get better recommendations that aren't wasting your time as we try to guess what you mean, and then guess which half you've seen, and which is the trash half.
Something to think about for the future at any rate.
Which ones do you consider to be popular that you've watched, and which ones do you consider to be popular but trash?
I'm not trying to start a riot so just guess
You're not going to start a riot by sharing your preferences while trying to get recommendations for things you'll like. No one is gonna get but hurt that you think Attack on Titan sucks balls. But you're gonna a lot more relevant recommendations if people know what you do/do not like, and know what you've already seen so that they aren't wasting a rec on something you've watched.
Edit: ALSO what you define as an anti-hero? There's argument over this a lot because it means different things to different people or mediums, so I don't wanna recommend something where you're like "that aint even an anti hero"
Gundam: The Origin, which mostly follows Char Aznable's origin story.
I’m not a fan of lovey dovey “hero” main character with morals. Any shows that features main characters that are morally grey, a bit ruder, and more twisted? Characters such as-
Revy Askeladd Tanya degurechaff The Major Alucard
Again they don’t have to be extremely twisted etc, as long as they don’t fall into the trope of “good hearted” characters such as Deku, Tanjiro and the like.
Like naofumi isn’t exactly evil and twisted, but he’s cold and not very expressive.
psychopass
black lagoon
black butler
world conquest zvezda plot
I have a really good one but its a manga and novel not a anime is that ok?
I mean, They did shield bro dirty but he still managed keep humanity intact. If you ask me, he is more kind hearted than the other MCs. He just turned into a god damn Tsundere, that's all. If it was me, things would've turn out pretty bad.... For the others of course.
It’s not that shield hero is a bad show, I just hate every single character
I love that show exactly coz I hate every single character except MC and his party. I just love revenge stories.
