Anime with Anti-Heroes

Darker than Black

"Darker than Black" is frequently recommended for its anti-hero characters. The series features protagonists who operate in morally ambiguous areas, making decisions that are not always aligned with traditional heroism [1:1], [2:1]. Hei, the main character, is a Contractor who works as an assassin and spy, embodying the anti-hero archetype.

Fate/Zero

Kiritsugu Emiya from "Fate/Zero" is another classic example of an anti-hero. His methods and motivations are often questionable, as he is willing to sacrifice anything for his vision of world peace [2:1], [2:2]. This complexity makes him a compelling character for those interested in morally grey protagonists.

Overlord

"Overlord" features Ainz Ooal Gown, an overpowered character who is technically a villain but operates with a certain level of anti-hero charisma [3:5], [4:6], [5:2]. The series explores themes of power and morality, as Ainz navigates his role in a new world.

Moriarty the Patriot

"Moriarty the Patriot" offers a fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes universe by focusing on William James Moriarty as the protagonist. He is portrayed as a sympathetic anti-hero who uses his intellect to fight against societal injustices [2:3], [4:1], [5:5].

Psycho-Pass

"Psycho-Pass" is known for its enforcers, who are essentially anti-heroes working within a dystopian system [2:2]. The series delves into complex moral questions about justice and free will, making it a must-watch for fans of anti-hero narratives.

Other Notable Mentions

  • Arifureta: Features a protagonist who becomes ruthless after being betrayed, fitting the anti-hero mold [3:1], [5:1].
  • Hellsing: Alucard is a quintessential anti-hero, operating with his own code of ethics while fighting supernatural threats [5:2].
  • The Eminence in Shadow: An isekai with a villainous protagonist, adding a twist to the typical hero journey [5:3].

These series offer a variety of anti-hero characters, each with unique motivations and ethical dilemmas, providing rich narratives for viewers interested in exploring the darker sides of heroism.

Most of the main characters in Darker than Black are anti-heroes. I’d recommend you watch it. It’s actually quite good, and isn’t talked about enough.

Give these a go openings/trailers are linked to give you a feel.

  • Saga of Tanya the Evil (2017) A cruel Japanese businessman is reincarnated into the body of a young girl in a fantasy world similar to early 20th century Imperial Germany after defying God. With her many attempts to avoid frontline duty are foiled due to her success she is determined to ensure that his Empire avoids the mistakes of the past. (CR/Funimation)

Saga of Tanya the Evil OP

  • Moriarty the Patriot (2020) After Albert Moriarty convinces his father to adopt two orphans William and Louis he learns of their hatred for the corrupt British nobility and agrees to join them in their goal of creating a better Britain by any means necessary. Not a bad take on the Sherlock Holmes lore. (Funimation)

Moriarty the Patriot OP

  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes (OVA 1988-1997) A great epic space opera with a conflict focused on a corrupt democracy fighting an enlightened despot. Discussions on both the benefits and issues of both systems along with the huge epic space battles. Recent remake not a bad adaptation but it is a bit rushed and only covers the first two books of 10 original has covered all. (Watch the first two prequel films My Conquest is A Sea of Stars and Overture to a New War and skip the first two episodes of the main series after seeing the films. Overture covers the first two episodes better. Extra content you can watch after the fact is the prequel Gaiden and the remake). (Hidive/VRV) there are two MCs in LOTGH Reinhard is the more the character you are describing of the two

anime with op anti hero mc

Posted by BelowAvgPerson · in r/Animesuggest · 4 years ago

This is something that has been posted a lot and the suggestions are always the same and I refuse to believe that those are the only ones out there.

I've watched a few anime with ridiculously over powered mc's and I enjoy them. Not everyone's favorite genre but I like it. I am looking for an anime where the MC is an anti hero and doesn't really like anyone. Preferably because he was betrayed or is seeking revenge on someone or something. If there is some try hard, "power of friendship goon" he shits on during the series that's a plus. Arifureta had a MC like this that I enjoyed as well as Shield Hero. Also Godtsuya from Irregular of course. Grisaia was another series I enjoyed for reference. Romance is cool if its there but manly indifferent about Romance.

Here is my MAL profile with things I've seen if you want to look at that as well, and see anime of this genre for yourself, if you also happen to be looking.

https://myanimelist.net/animelist/DankCrank?status=2

I appreciate any suggestions, and to be clear I'm looking for anime series and not manga or light novels. Not against them just not my thing. Subs and dubs are both fine. Thanks in advance!

One Outs - maybe what you'd like? He is usually always distrusted and kind of hated due to a blunt attitude. The setting is baseball, and MC is very OP as a pitcher, but also as a schemer.

Well, based on OverlySarcastic definition of anti-hero, I’d say:

  • Shield Hero (slight unheroic motive and method) Pros - Deliver the promise of the premise by making the anti hero protag live like an outcast, fun plot that harvest the anti-hero premise decently, easy to digest exposition and world building, high quality Art/Soundtrack and Directing. Cons - Fit the plot but one dimensional antagonists since their existence is merely to serve their purpose of pissing off the protag and audience. Loveable but surface level supporting cast, all characters have potential but the story doesn’t dive into it. Edit: Wait a min, I just read your post again, didn’t know u watched it already
  • Code Geass (Semi-Unheroic Motive and Unheroic Method): Pros: Insane Plot, Complex and morally grey characters. Cons: Tone shift regularly and randomly, still work for some people. Plot sometime progress based on silly tropes, but still lead to insane plot.
  • Atttack on Titan (Unheroic Motive)
  • Hunter x Hunter Kurapica (Unheroic Motive)

Redo of Healer is one of the most brutal anti-hero examples. It is heavy ecchi with rape and such, so be warned.

Hellsing is a good anti-hero as well.

Overlord features an MC that has no mercy, though he is technically a villain.

The Eminence in Shadow (isekai with villain as mc)

Overlord (isekai with villain as mc aswell)

Redo of Healer (pretty dark, pretty edgy at some points, but good)

Code Geass (hes is getting a villain over time with deep charackter development)

Classroom of the Elite (mc could be seen as villain, well test it yourself)

Death Note (he doesnt consider himself a villain and thinks hes right, but well)

Love of Kill (not really an anti hero but a assassin in modern age)

Reign of the Seven Spellblades (boys mother gets killed and he wants revenge/anti hero)

So many anime frustrations can be solved by learning the manga demographics.

People bitch about fanservice in everything bc they have never watched Josei.

People bitch about no killing and the power of friendship bc they have only watched shonen.

Preaching to the choir.

I read (watch) some of really stupid takes awhile ago about Tanjiro from Demon Slayer being too goody goody.

And you listen and you can't help but think that the person is slamming on Tanjiro's character simply because they read Berserk a moment ago and are salty because Tanjiro isn't acting like Guts.

Arifureta.

MC has no issue killing bad guys. He'll kill anyone and anything that gets in his way. He is ruthless toward his enemies. S1's adaptation kinda sucks and there are some bad CGI parts but if you can look past it, it's actually a good story overall. Especially the LNs. S2 did a lot better with pacing and animation. When one of the hero's is such a massive asshole to everyone around them that they are basically a villain. Usually there will be a redemption arc for characters like this, but not always.

  1. Amai Mask from One Punch Man

  2. Endeavor from My Hero Academia (at the start of the series)

Minotaur Space Marine chapter from 40k. Even among the morally dubious at best space marines the Minotaurs stand out as being particularly egregious, with abnormally high rates of: involvement in civil wars within the Imperium (including against other space marines), lying about their troop numbers and locations, serving the high lords of terras every whim and essentially being they private space marines, staggeringly high rates of civilian casualties and collateral damage (a marine was noted to have said that 60% civilan casualty rate is very low for missions involving them), they will steal relics and supplies from other imperium forces and horde them for themselves, and last but not least, one of their commanders has a specially made gun that replaces the normal high explosive charges in bolter rounds with solid slugs to more easily shoot through hostages to reach the hostage taker.

The Marines Malevolent

They are the biggest assholes among the space marines. It's not even that they don't care about civilian casualties, it seems like they're outright trying to get civilians killed. Hell, the inquisition has been investigating these guys for years but haven't done anything, because even though they're willing to bomb refugee camps and antagonize both other space marines and imperial guard commanders, they aren't corrupted by Chaos

Here's a few I haven't seen mentioned yet;

{Dororo} dark supernatural adventure

{Dorohedoro} crazy dystopian adventure

{Satsuriku no Tenshi} psychological thriller *my son says the dub is actually ok on this show, idk as I only watched sub.

{Heion Sedai no Idaten tachi} very full of anti heros. But there is gratuitous violence/ gore and lots of blood.

{Hoozuki no Reitetsu} if you want your dark to be funny. It's absolutely hilarious if you like satirical comedy and MC is most def an anti hero!

{Scums Wish} if you want to try a very dark romance. There's no anti hero, but def hard to tell if there's any good guys in it. But they're young so they may grow into good people.

{Cowboy Bebop} adventure

{Samurai Champloo} adventure

{Gintama} a total package series. Feels, fights and the absolute best comedy of any shonen series.

{Akira} movie. Very very very cool dystopian future scape and pretty much the gateway drug for us western consumers of anime.

{Sword of the Stranger} movie. Nameless samurai having cool fights.

Wishing many happy hours of watching awesome shows to all!!✌️

Anyone else wish there were more anti hero protagonists in anime?

Posted by EUJourney · in r/anime · 5 years ago

The constant heroic characters in almost all anime get repetitive in my opinion..be it a Shounen or Seinen. It seems the MC being "good" is basically a requirement.

I would like to see more morally ambigious protagonists but the Japanese don't seem to be a fan of that (unlike americans). Thoughts?

I wish there were more protagonists like Kiritsugu from Fate/Zero. He fights for "good", but to get there he does whatever he thinks is necessary without batting an eye.

And I think they got him right. But a lot of anime portraying these anti-hero characters fall into the trap of making them too edgy for my taste.

So yeah, same here, but depending on how they go about it.

Yeah Kiritsugu was a pretty compelling and refreshing character for an anime. Would rather have more like him than the same old Shounen cliche who never does anything questionable

I just wish they quit ruining their anti-heroes. Way too often they start off with an MC that is morally ambiguous, only to soften him up, often with the help of moe.

Lankpants · 5 years ago

Personally, not really. Antiheroes are often just used to shovel edgy crap into a series whenever we do see them. They can and have been done well, but this feels like the exception not the rule.

Rather than seeing more I'd just like to see them be less crap on average when they're used.

That way you can keep track and have something to show people so you get better recommendations that aren't wasting your time as we try to guess what you mean, and then guess which half you've seen, and which is the trash half.

Something to think about for the future at any rate.

Which ones do you consider to be popular that you've watched, and which ones do you consider to be popular but trash?

I'm not trying to start a riot so just guess

You're not going to start a riot by sharing your preferences while trying to get recommendations for things you'll like. No one is gonna get but hurt that you think Attack on Titan sucks balls. But you're gonna a lot more relevant recommendations if people know what you do/do not like, and know what you've already seen so that they aren't wasting a rec on something you've watched.

Edit: ALSO what you define as an anti-hero? There's argument over this a lot because it means different things to different people or mediums, so I don't wanna recommend something where you're like "that aint even an anti hero"

Gundam: The Origin, which mostly follows Char Aznable's origin story.

Anti-hero main character animes

Posted by Vainglory1- · in r/Animesuggest · 3 years ago

I’m not a fan of lovey dovey “hero” main character with morals. Any shows that features main characters that are morally grey, a bit ruder, and more twisted? Characters such as-

Revy Askeladd Tanya degurechaff The Major Alucard

Again they don’t have to be extremely twisted etc, as long as they don’t fall into the trope of “good hearted” characters such as Deku, Tanjiro and the like.

Like naofumi isn’t exactly evil and twisted, but he’s cold and not very expressive.

I mean, They did shield bro dirty but he still managed keep humanity intact. If you ask me, he is more kind hearted than the other MCs. He just turned into a god damn Tsundere, that's all. If it was me, things would've turn out pretty bad.... For the others of course.

It’s not that shield hero is a bad show, I just hate every single character

animes with anti-heroes

Key Considerations for Anime with Anti-Heroes

  1. Character Complexity: Anti-heroes often have morally ambiguous motivations and complex backstories. Look for series that explore their internal conflicts and development.

  2. Themes: Many anti-hero narratives delve into themes like justice, revenge, and the gray areas of morality. Consider what themes resonate with you.

  3. Genre Variety: Anti-heroes can be found across various genres, including action, fantasy, and psychological thrillers. Explore different genres to find what you enjoy most.

  4. Impact on Story: An anti-hero's actions often drive the plot in unexpected directions. Look for shows where their choices significantly affect the outcome.

Recommendations:

  1. "Death Note" - Follows Light Yagami, who uses a supernatural notebook to eliminate criminals. His descent into darkness raises questions about justice and morality.

  2. "Attack on Titan" - Features Eren Yeager, whose motivations shift throughout the series, challenging the viewer's perception of right and wrong.

  3. "Code Geass" - Centers on Lelouch Lamperouge, who seeks to overthrow an empire using cunning and manipulation, blurring the lines between hero and villain.

  4. "Berserk" - Follows Guts, a mercenary with a tragic past, navigating a dark fantasy world filled with betrayal and violence.

  5. "Vinland Saga" - Chronicles Thorfinn's journey of revenge and self-discovery, exploring themes of honor and the consequences of violence.

These series not only feature compelling anti-heroes but also provide rich narratives that challenge traditional notions of heroism.
