TL;DR
Using KakaoTalk's Built-in Features
KakaoTalk offers a built-in chat backup feature within the app, allowing users to save their chat history. However, some users have noted changes in the available options, such as the removal of "chat and file backup" [1:1]. Additionally, the Talk Drive service can archive conversations and files, but it may require payment and possibly a Korean phone number
[1:5].
PC Version for Backup
Installing KakaoTalk on a PC can provide additional backup options. Users can log into their account on the computer and download their chat history directly [1:4]. This method has been successful for individuals who forgot to back up their chats before switching devices
[2:1].
Restoring Chats from Device Backups
If you have backed up your device using services like iCloud, you may be able to restore your KakaoTalk chats by restoring your entire phone from a previous backup [2:4]
[2:7]. This method is useful if you didn't perform an official KakaoTalk backup before losing access to your chats.
Limitations and Challenges
Unfortunately, once chats are lost without a prior backup, they cannot be restored directly within KakaoTalk [2:3]. Some users have managed to save chat logs as text files, but these cannot be reintegrated into the app
[2:5]. Additionally, issues with password creation during backup processes have been reported, which can complicate restoration efforts
[4:1].
Alternative Methods
For those looking to permanently save messages, connecting the phone to a computer and downloading all texts and pictures via iTunes or similar services might be an option [5:1]. This approach ensures that even if the phone number is disconnected, the messages remain accessible.
In summary, while KakaoTalk provides some tools for backing up chat history, regular device backups and utilizing the PC version can offer additional security against data loss.
Hey guys, my understanding is that kakao doesn't have extensive servers and so your kakao chat history is only saved on your own phone. Therefore, my understanding is that if you unexpectedly lose your phone or it breaks, then you've instantly lost all of your chat histories.
Therefore, there are a few conversations that I'd like to backup on my computer, but I'm not sure if there is a way to do that. Is there?
To clarify, I don't have the PC kakao software installed, but I'd be willing to install it if it was a requirement for backing up my conversations.
I believe that if you ANTICIPATE changing your phone, there is a method to TEMPORARILY backup your conversations (limit 14 days) and then download them to your new phone. But I am looking for a permanent solution.
Is there a way to activate the temporary backup but then transfer the backup to your PC instead of a new phone? (As a test, I tried to initiate a temporary backup but the directions that appeared on my screen were only in Korean.)
Thank you for your help.
You can register for the talk drive within the app. It'll backup and archive conversations and files.
It appears the Talk Drive Beta has ended and to continue to use the service, payment is required. Unfortunately I think a korean phone number is now needed for this. Any better ideas?
Thank you for your response. (sorry for my slow reply, my post was initially blocked for some reason and so I didn't think anyone would ever comment and so I didn't bother logging in regularly to check for replies) This is slightly off-topic, but literally 48 hours ago when I was looking into this, I saw that there were two options "chat backup" and "chat and file backup". But today, when I check again, the only option is "chat backup". Are you also seeing only one option called "Chat Backup" today?
I think I might’ve fucked up and I’m panicking. so my old phone is an iPhone 8, and I got a new iPhone 12 recently. I logged into my Kakaotalk account on the new iPhone 12, and all my chats were gone. then I realized that I forgot to backup chat history from my iPhone 8. my iPhone 8 was already logged out of my Kakaotalk account at the point, so I logged in again. all my chats were gone on the iPhone 8 as well. is there any way to restore my old chats? some of the last chats I had with my relatives who have passed away were on there, and I would really like them back. has anyone dealt with this same issue before?
Have you tried starting a "new" conversation with your contacts? That helped me retrieve a portion of a Convo with my friend. I'm sorry for your loss and the distress of this app.
I expect this to only restore the recent part of the conversation (I think I saw “3 days” somewhere) as Kakotalk only stores conversations in its servers for a short time. Your phone and computer/tablet have to connect to Kakaotalk servers and save the messages locally within this time. Also, this gives you access to any messages which were sent after you made your backup prior to switching to your new phone. But, unfortunately, the valued memories in past chat history won’t be there.
I tried that method but it didn’t work :( thank you for your reply though, I genuinely appreciate it
I'm so sorry this didn't work, hope you are well and stay safe.
Found this thread after googling cause I have the same problem. KakaoTalk asked me to re-login as my Korean number is no longer in use. I logged in with email and added my new number but my chats and contacts were all GONE. I thought since I logged in with email there would be no problem but I was wrong
Nothing seemed to work so I kinda came up with my own solution, hope this helps somebody in the future: I saw that my last iCloud backup was the day before and KakaoTalk syncs to iCloud so I wiped my whole phone out and restored it from the backup. Now the app is in this weird limbo state when I can read my old chats and see my contacts but I am not able to see new messages. I tried to log in with PC but it sends a verification message that I can't open. The app asks me to log out and log in with new info but if I do that I will lose contacts again :\ The chat backup function doesn't work either (error message because I am not "officially" logged in).
Thankfully chat export function still works. If you go to a chat -> chat settings you can send the txt messages via email or save the whole chat as zip file and save it from iTunes files. I did both just in case. If you have important info that is not backed up this might work for you. However bear in mind that when you restore from iCloud backup some info may not be transerred (I am a safari tabs hoarder and my 100+ tabs were gone after the backup, but the sacrifice was worth it for my KaTalk chats)
Hey I ended up having to do the exact same thing. I was wondering if after exporting all your files you were able to restore them to kakao somehow? Or did you just save them all to your PC? I've been looking for a way to restore them to Kakao but it seems impossible so far. I'm happy I saved everything but just frustrated I can't just put it all back on my kakao account.
No, I believe it’s not possible to have them back as a kakao chat again :( I just got the zip files with text messages and pictures. Too bad, but at least I have them saved in some way!
I can’t understand how exactly you did this? I don’t know how the chat with my boyfriend got deleted out of nowhere and it’s nowhere to be found and I don’t know what to do! We had so many things in the chat that matter to me
I just wiped my phone and restored from iCloud copy. The phone copy was from the day before where all my chats were still visible
Hi, I have recently added a friend on KKT. It says I could not send a message to a person who haven't send a message to me before. My question is, how long do I have to wait before I can send her a message? Thank you.
Have you tried logging on through a PC?
I'm 2 months late but, if you have KakaoTalk linked to any pc, you can retrieve all your past messages (as long as you've been active on your pc)!
Today I switched from a Samsung J7 to a Google Pixel 6 and I also forgot to backup before I logged in! I lost everything except for the really recent messages. :( Thankfully, I also actively use KakaoTalk on my Macbook Pro, and it still had all my old chats! So I just backed up on my laptop, and then loaded that backup onto my new phone when I re-logged in! Everything was there.
I hope you've already found a way to recover it ;-; I wish they would give a warning of some kind before we delete the app or log in.
I made the mistake of trying to open Kakao talk on my phone when my sim card wasn't working. Kakaotalk thought it was a new phone and locked me out of my account.
I backed up my com.kakao.talk folder on my android phone. There was no way for me to do an official backup since it locked me out of my account.
I am now signed back in, but the chat history is gone. I tried to copy and replace the com.kakao.talk folder, but my chat history is still gone.
Is there any way I can use the contents of the com.kakao.talk folder to restore my chats?
Does anyone know why Kakao has such weird user interface “gotchas” like this? I can’t believe the folks who work there are stupid.
"we've been doing it this way for almost a decade, nobody complained and our stock prices are soaring"
Misleading title, Kakao did nothing, user fault
What the heck?
Apparently I not have 10 days remaining before they're erased, but Kakao just gives me auto-replies of FAQ text.
Anyone know what to do here?
Did it give you a code/password when you were done backing up?
Nope. It didn't ask me to choose one, or give me one.
I'm almost 100% certain of that because my old phone screen was cracked and it's really hard to type normally let alone in apps with the screen locked upright (I've actually now discovered that there is an option to let it flip the screen but I didn't have that enabled). So I'm pretty sure I would remember creating the password, given how infuriatingly difficult it is and the fact that I would have had to do it while the service person was waiting. And if I was given one I'd have screenshot-ed it, and I don't have that. I just clicked, it thought and finished, and I went on with my business.
Kakao highlighted the "You can't restore if you forget or lose your password." section of their auto email the second time, which I actually laughed at, because it suggests to me someone read my 2nd email but did not opt to try to be any more helpful.
Edit: If I had to guess, I figure it must have somehow failed to backup the first time. I seem to remember some sort of 'Backed up: *todays date*' message, but maybe I'm crazy.
Hmmm when I switched phones it usually gives me a code/password that they make. Maybe there was a bug that skipped the whole thing?
Hello, my grandmother has passed away but I was hoping to save her Kakaotalk messages and conversations to look back and remember my grandmother as it was her main form of contact with family members and friends. However, my mother wished to disconnect her phone number from our plan which I believe could lose all of her messages. Will they permanently stay on her phone or can I do something to save them on a computer or something? Thank you so much.
Hello, there is a way to download the full history from either kakao talk from laptop or phone, i am not sure you can download only one specific chat in particular but there is a way to connect the phone to the old itunes or now music and download, in a folder, a huge folder with all the pictures and texts as I did it when I changed phone.
what happens to those messgae that were not download?
I recently bought a new iPhone and used the data transfer to transfer all my data from my old phone. When I opened kakao talk, with all my data/chats in it, it prompted me to restart or reverify as I was logged in on another device. When I did, all of my old chat history was deleted on my new phone. All of it is still on my old phone. I can’t seem to back up kakao on my old phone as keep getting prompted to restart verification on it. TLDR:Is there any way I can restore kakao talk data on my new phone?
This just happened me to me... I just lost all our dating chats and photos just from logging in with my new phone... Couldn't even recover by logging back into my old phone. What a ridiculous feature of Kakao. Never using it ever again.
I casually tried to sign into my KakaoTalk on a Chromebook so that I could do a Kakao video call with my laptop cam while I used my phone at the same time more conveniently.
when I switched the account back over to my phone, several years of chat history was gone. is there any way to get it back?
The only way likely would be to restore your phone from a backup. It’s stupid the way they have it set up where basically it deletes everything because the data is probably still there, you just can’t access it
If you backed them up. Yes. If not no.
What do you mean by “switched over”? You can use a PC client and phone simultaneously without logging out of the phone client
The chats on your phone shouldn’t have been touched at all
a Chromebook isn't like a normal PC. Chromebooks use Android OS (they can only download programs available on the Google Play Store), so in terms of software, Kakao would see it as another smartphone/smart-device rather than a PC. Chromebooks are basically Android tablets with a built-in physical keyboard
it's a special case.

So I moved to the states from Korea. Downloaded KakaoTalk on my new phone and got into my old account and everything seemed to be fine. But now KakaoTalk will just not load any new messages I receive. I get the notification and I can see what they said in the notification, but when I open the chat it’s like they sent nothing at all. Happening for all my chats.
If I have the chat room open and get a message than I can see them. Any ideas what is causing this?
Having the same issues here in Canada. No clue what’s causing it but I’m worried ill lose all my chat history/photo/attachments if I delete the app and reinstall it. Has anyone found a solution?
Ok so someone told me it could be due to low storage space?
I can see that being a valid reason for sure, but my phone isn't even half full and this still doesn't rectify the fact that it works fine if i have the chat open.
seems impossible to find out any kind of fix for this and its so frustrating.
Hi I have this problem too, I think it's because if you switch your sim card. I'm currently in Spain and saw a message but my Kakao account is made with a US phone number, so for this reason I think I'm unable to see it
I want to export all chat history and get saved to local.
I want to run analytics on my chat history. and see my search trends
I did this for OpenAI the other day and after extracting the JSON file's contents into a folder structure with .md files to read easier, I ingested those into a chromadb, I guess I could have ingested the JSON but I did it this way so I could read the chat entries easier. Anyway after creating the chromadb I created a basic agent system to return research about the data which you could easily adjust for your use case and just specify whatever trends you want to observe.
So in the end I just have a folder of .md or text or whatever and run the ingest python script which creates the chromadb. Then you run a second script which starts a chat CLI so you can chat with the data and it returns the research from the agent's analysis.
I dont' have a working version on github, but this version is easy enough to fix the bugs in and get to work for your use case if you just tell your vibe coding set up, or if you actually know what you are doing you can just look at it, scrap it, and write something better.
But what is broken on it is just the file ingestion needs repaired, the search and agent functions all work which was the hard part.
Anyway, I don't even know if this is helpful in any way, but I tried, that's all that counts.
Settings, privacy, export data
From the desktop app… click on your initials at the bottom left. Then settings, privacy, export data. They’ll send you an email after about 10 mins with a download link.
