Linking Your Account
Before changing your phone number in KakaoTalk, ensure that your account is linked with your email. This step is crucial as it helps maintain access to your account when switching numbers [3:1]. If you haven't done this already, it's advisable to do so before proceeding with the number change.
Changing Phone Number
To change your phone number in KakaoTalk, navigate to your Profile page. Look for the Settings button (gear icon) in the top right corner. Tap on your current phone number, and then select the yellow "Change Phone Number" button [3:5]. This should allow you to update your phone number directly within the app.
Troubleshooting Verification Issues
If you're facing verification issues after installing a new SIM card, try uninstalling and reinstalling KakaoTalk. This method has worked for users switching from Korean to US numbers [3:3]. Additionally, KakaoTalk might restrict new device use with an existing account for security reasons; this usually resolves itself within 24 to 48 hours. Contacting KakaoTalk support via their website can also be helpful if issues persist
[3:3].
Alternative Solutions
If changing the number through the app doesn't work, consider starting a new account with your new number [3:2]. While setting up KakaoPay is beneficial, having a Korean debit card for online purchases may offer more flexibility
[3:6].
Considerations Beyond Discussions
Ensure you have backed up any important chat data before changing your number, as some users have reported losing chat history during number changes [4:1]. If privacy is a concern, especially in cases of harassment or extortion, changing your number can provide relief and a fresh start
[5].
One question, when I change my WhatsApp number will the people still have my account like signal and telegram? Or do I need to inform them that I have a new number? Would they be able to just text me without typing the new number?
+62 821-1214-4204
existing chat give a warning that the number changed.
If no chat exist then you have to tell the contacts because they can't know the new number
Okey
I want to change my phone number because I’m being extorted by someone. I’ve blocked all the numbers they have used to currently reach me by there could be more numbers that have saved my contact. I’ve not saved any of their numbers. I plan to change my phone number but I am aware that WhatsApp can alert group chats and my contacts that I have changed numbers. I would be keen on letting some of my contacts and group chats know because some are pretty important. My question now is that is there any way for me to change my phone number on WhatsApp and still ensure the extortor will not be notified that I have changed my number, if he has saved my contact on a phone with a different number that I do not know and have not blocked.
Sorry if this sound a little confusing btw
Only the people you have saved as your contact will know if you choose to notify them. As for groups they will automatically update with your new number.
Just information there has been people reporting that when someone changes their number the chat for the other person disappears.
Oh so just to clarify, if I change my WhatsApp number, the PMs I have with others may be deleted? And also, so the extortors will not know my new number or that I changed my number and only the contacts that I have saved on my phone will know?
Only contacts you saved in your phone will know you changed numbers. People have been reporting that with a number change, the chat disappears.
If you are in any groups with the extortors it will automatically update the number in the group so make sure you are not in any groups with them.
Hey fam,
This move has been exhausting. The little things add up to a lot, and this is just another one of those things.
So since i think ppl will bring these things up:
Yes, i already have my korean bank account set up
Yes, I have tried using the bank's app, it's even more confusing than Kakaotalk
Yes, i've already gone through the FAQs and looked for answers to this on other forums and had no luck!
The issue:
I got my Korean SIM today, and am desperately trying to register it to my kakaotalk so i can set up kakaopay and finally start living my damn life over here. EVERYTHING online (including, most devastatingly, food delivery service ;-;) requires kakaopay or some other form of digital pay. The problem i kept running into was, it wouldn't allow me to use my US phone number to link those accounts. I went and got the SIM, and now i'm running into the issue of Kakaotalk not allowing me to change numbers.
The website states that i should go to KakaoTalk>More>Edit Phone Number but that is literally not an option on my screen. When i go to "More," i get "Emoticon / Theme / Account / Calendar."
So i go to Account, and see my phone number listed. When i tap it to try and change it, it just takes me back to the same gd screen telling me "To change your number to to KakaoTalk>More>Edit Phone Number."
I'm super new to this service and have only ever used it for chatting, so i have no idea how to really troubleshoot it. I'm hoping someone with far more experience with it might be able to help me out. I'm hungry and friggin tired of eating out of the 711.
Your Kakaotalk is, basically, your phone number if that's what you used to register it. Start a new account with your new number. Another option, and one that's even more useful than Kakao pay, is to get a Korean debit card and tell them you want to use it to make online purchases (and I'd recommend travel as well). Then you have to figure out your banks authentication mess .
Like I can't just enter my card number/CVV/Expiry/Address like we do in the states. It ALWAYS asks for third party app processing. That's why I was trying to set up kakaopay because at least that way I don't have to juggle between 3 different apps.
I'm not saying don't setup Kakaopay but there's plenty that doesn't cover and if you want to use your card you'll have to learn the banks processing.
I did set it up for online purchases when I made the account, and went through the authentication stuff, but any time I've tried to use it online whether it be 여기요, gmarket, ikea, whatever, it always says I have to use a secondary pay app. I bank with hana, and I've downloaded both Hana Pay and Global Hana and couldn't get either to work as a pay source online.
I seriously wish I had a Korean friend rn. This shit is exhausting.
After installing the new SIM, try uninstalling and reinstalling KakaoTalk. This is what worked when I switched from Korean to US number. Before that, I got into an endless verification loop.
Also, KakaoTalk might not allow a new device to be used with an existing account "for security and to prevent abuse" This should sort itself out after not 24/48 hours. They suggested not using KakaoTalk at all during that time.
Finally, try contacting their support via their website.
♀️♀️♀️ I will try this tonight and let you know of it works, thank you so much!
did it work?
On your Profile page, tap the Settings button (the gear button in the top right corner). Tap your phone number (yes, just tap it). The phone number screen will come up. Tap the yellow "Change Phone Number" button.
This is how I did it when my phone number changed
Yeah... that's what the point of the post is. That option doesn't appear for me ^^;
you want to be on the Profile page (the page that only shows your background picture, your profile pic, and "My Chatroom", "Edit Profile", and "KakaoStory" at the bottom.
(there are other pages, with other Settings buttons. The one I just described above is the one you want to be on)
Did you link your kakaotalk account with your email? You probably need that first before switching phone numbers
Yeah, I did that back when I made the account initially
Hi, this is an old thread but wondering if anyone has any help/follow-up/experience on this?
I just changed my phone, and now I receive this notification on both phones which prevents me from backing up any of my chat data. Thank you,
Bonjour, J'ai exactement le même problème que vous. Avez-vous réussi à récupérer votre compte ?
I was still actively using my Kakao until I went to bed the night before and I woke up this morning to this message.
Note: I did not change my phone, I did not take my simcard out, I did not log into another device. I just finish the last message and went to sleep.
Question: What will happen if I click "Start Over"? Will I lose my data? I been trying to click "Later" but it keeps popping up in a loop and I cannot get out of it. I cannot send message, receive, or backup either.
Did you manage to solve this issue?
Not yet, are you coming across the same issue?
I feel so free.
Just wanted to share this because Im ecstatic.
I recently changed my phone number, completely new and is not recycled. Deleted KakaoTalk too (it’s like a default messenger app everyone uses in Korea). Basically, no one from my past can contact me anymore and I love it.
It feels like a fresh start. I’m not anxious about unread messages or maintaining fake friendships I didn’t care for. Now I know exactly who really wants to stay in touch they’ll reach out, and I get to choose who gets my new number. It’s peaceful and quiet.
But now I’m stuck with this. What do you say when someone you do know asks for your new number, but you don’t want to give it to them? I don’t want to make it awkward or rude, but.. I changed my number for a reason. Is there a nice way to respond?
Give them your email--a specific email you set up just for "socializing" different from your every day email. Or get a Google number.
"I'm in the middle of changing it. Here's an email for now."
Next month will make it a year that I deleted Facebook and I got rid of messenger last December and I still don’t regret it. It showed me who’s really my friend and who actually cares about my kids and I. It’s been REAL peaceful and TikTok is about to be the next one I’m gonna delete. It’s just idk, always negative and people always hating on everyone….. having positivity in my life is and will always be peaceful ☺️
I’ve been doing the same thing but for different reasons. Well I had good friends but I didn’t have a great time doing my own things when I was with them. I understand that they may not have the same interest as I do, but hanging out with them, chatting with them was taking away my time for self-improvement. I was getting way far back from their trendy TikTok knowledge and felt bad when I couldn’t take my time to conquer my dreams. I love to have them but sometimes, I need to walk alone. Enjoy your time buddy, you’re gonna feel refreshed 😆🧘🏻♀️
Yeah man cutting out the "digital tendrils" has given me a lot of mental clarity and focus, peace, freedom of mind. There are invisible chains that take up your brains processing with all of the different platforms to check up on and notifications binging and bopping.
I did this today, felt so liberating. Now I can just be myself without the crushing anxiety from my phone. ☺️
Until the reddit gremlins come for you. All notifications off, and then refuse to engage in back and forth pissing matches with trolls that have far Cheeto fingers
If I change my old number with a new one, can I still register that old number with a new account?
yes
Once you just change your phone number you can just go to settings and press on phone number, and it will suggest to change it to new one
Hey guys,
I used kakaotalk to talk to my one friend but I wasn't log in cuz first time it doesn't have to. It was enough to give my number and email, that's it, I could talk to my friend. But I got a new phone and when I downloaded the app it said I have to make an account and log in. So I was like okay then. When I logged in my contact's gone and as I lucky I am, I don't remember to my friend's ID.
Can I have any help how can I find her again? I mean I know her name, her birthday and stuff just her ID missing from my mind.
Or that can happen if she will answer my earlier message when I wasn't log in then I'm gonna get her message? Cuz I gave my number and email, just I wasn't log in.
Any idea?
I have the same problem. No solution as of yet. I have lost all my chat history and friends... "Awesome" feature... Guessing it was done to allow anyone w a phone to just start using it and to not confuse the elderly...
I see, well then that's it i guess. I tried to asked some help from kakao support but they were just "yeah, sorry, you should to log in and make sure you do some safe saves" Somehow I understand this you can search just about ID's but it's annoying in these cases.
I switched to a new phone and now that I try to login to my kakaotalk account, it says that I’ll receive a verification code on my phone number and when I click OK instead of going to “Enter verification code” screen, it asks to send a verification message to verify my identity. I've sent that message several times and I have already checked with my carrier and I can send international messages successfully. When I check verification it always says “The verification is still in progress” and after some it says “A temporary error has occurred. Please start over”. I’ve tried to reinstall kakaotalk, try logging in after several days but it’s still the same.
Hi, I'm trying to make an account on kakaotalk and I'm unable to because the verification sms just won't send. Anything which I can do?
Help
I tried it yesterday, and it's difficult. Actually, if the message does not deliver, then it means international messaging is blocked, so for that, you need to purchase an isd pack to actually send the verification code which is like the only option. Some people said to wait but waiting option will not work also ig
Mine worked after putting 00 at the front of the number, then just copy pasting the code.
How can I joined kakaotalk,I use my number several tim but I can't register because sending message is failde
If I delete an account and then change my phone number, and use the number on which I had deleted the account… will it work? I don't receive the SMS code...
No. This is Mackgawd. No
???
Are they still on the old phone? If so, how can I get them back?

Kakaotalk really needs a cloud service if you made an account. It has a backup setting but really annoying to do.
you're out of luck unless you presaved the messages which it does not sound like you did
You cant if you didnt back it up.
Sadly, you have to back your Kakaotalk messages up before moving to a new device.
