TL;DR
Win + PrtScn
to capture the entire screen and save it directly to your Pictures\Screenshots folder.Win + Shift + S
for more control over what part of the screen you capture.Using Built-In Tools
Windows 10 offers several built-in methods to take screenshots. The simplest way to capture the entire screen is by pressing Win + PrtScn
, which saves the screenshot directly to your Pictures\Screenshots folder [2:2],
[5:1]. If you want more flexibility,
Win + Shift + S
opens a snipping tool that allows you to select a specific area of the screen to capture [1:2],
[3:2].
Capturing Specific Windows or Monitors
For capturing just the active window, use Alt + PrtScn
, which copies the window to your clipboard, allowing you to paste it into an application like Paint [4:1]. This method is particularly useful if you have multiple monitors and only want to capture one
[4:3].
Third-Party Tools
If the built-in options don't meet your needs, there are third-party tools available. Greenshot is a popular choice due to its customizability [2:3]. Another option is ShareX, which can be configured to automatically save screenshots without additional prompts
[5:6].
Common Issues and Solutions
Sometimes users find that their screenshots aren't saving as expected. This may be due to settings that redirect the Print Screen key to open Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch [5:5]. Checking and adjusting these settings in the Windows Settings menu can resolve this issue. Additionally, ensuring that Snip & Sketch is installed might solve problems where screenshots don't save automatically
[5:4].
By using these methods, you can efficiently capture screenshots on Windows 10 tailored to your specific needs.
yeah, so i need answers
Is there a way to take a screenshot using print screen but not the windows logo key? It is so much easier just to press one key than two.
Hold down windows keyboard key and tap the PrtSc or PrtScn button. Theimages is saved to your \Pictures\Screenshots\ folder
No, I meant without the windows logo key. The issue has already been fixed now though.
Greenshot is worth a look as well, nicely customizable.
Agree, far superior.
Isn't printScreen all that is needed to take a screenshot..?
No you have to do win+prtscrn
That must be pretty new.
Print screen and then paste
If you use windows search and searc for : snip
You will also find the Snipping Tool and/or Snip & Sketch - 2 of Windows built in programs that allow you to capture just a smaller section of the screen and highlight or make notes on it if desired.
I have been able to take screenshots with the windows key + Print Scr and now it doesn't work and it's driving me insane. I tried Alt + Print + S and still nothing bI tried just about every damn combination of keys and nothin. I really need help with this and Google isn't helping me at all
search for an app called snipping tool.
This. Or just press win key + printscreen key and you will find the screenshot in your pictures folder.
Windows key + shift + s
win + shift + s
Your keyboard settings have probably been tampered with
Reset your keyboard settings: go to language settings via Windows settings > change your keyboard language to, let's say, CA English > return it to the previous language configuration.
I have two monitors and when I take a screenshot it does them both side by side. I'd like it so it only takes it of the main monitor that I use because I always find myself having to crop out the other one.
Windows+Shift+S
Do I have to paste it into paint and save it because it didn't seem to auto save like when I used print screen+windows?
Look in the windows messages (notifications) there it will be, you can cut, crop, draw
With win+shift+s you can customize the region that you will capture to a window, full screen or only a selection
What graphics card are you using? I use an 6700XT, but I would imagine Nvidia cards also have this. The software has the ability to screen grab, and it can be set to grab whatever monitor is the focus at the time (where the program in current use is), with a simple key combo. For the Radeon software it's L Ctrl+ L Shift + I. Check your graphics config software.
Too difficult, just click win+shift+s and select the screen you want.
Too difficult? With the and edition, when I press the hockey, it captures the whole screen. I don't have to do anything else. Once the settings are chosen it's a one step process
Install picpick
I always use Alt + PrintScreen to copy the active window to the clipboard. I then have to open a paint program to paste and save it, but that's about it.
Recently I have been using the Snipping Tool and Greenshot.
Is there a way to take a screenshot directly and save it directly to a folder instead of opening snipping tool?
I have tried the following options:

All the above options are taking me to the snipping tool and not directly capturing the screen and saving.
Win + PrintScreen
Win+PrntScrn should directly take a screenshot and save it to Pictures\Screenshots.
I saw few videos on YouTube which said the same thing, but it's not happening on mine for some reason. Is there a setting I need to change to make it do that?
Perhaps you changed the setting that forces Snipping Tool open when pressing PrintScreen. It should be in Settings.
i think sharex can be set up to capture full screen and save it in a folder without prompting anything
win shift s
how the fuck would he screenshot a fucking monitor
I‘m used to just pressing Win+print but on this Laptop (Lenovo Yoga Slim 7) it just opens the snipping tool and I hate it. I‘ve been trying to figure out how to change it and also googled other possible short cuts and so far I haven‘t had any luck. Do you have any ideas what I could try or how to turn that snipping tool off? Thanks!
Edit: After being annoyed with this for over a year, of course I figure it out right after finally making a post about it. It was Fn+Win+print. Leaving this up for others with the same problem.
Strange - was it remapped somehow? According to this Win+Shift+S should call up the snipper thingy.
It was like this right from when I bought it. So I definitely didn‘t remap it. Every option I tried so far opens the snipping tool :(
Hmm. Could have been remapped in software by Lenovo. Try seeing if there is anything in the laptop shovelware included OOB that indicates it remaps keys for "functionality enhancements" or whatever.
Hi u/FR-1-Plan, thanks for posting to r/WindowsHelp! Don't worry, your post has not been removed. To let us help you better, try to include as much of the following information as possible! Posts with insufficient details might be removed at the moderator's discretion.

The usual f12 or prt scr do not seem to be working?
Thanks!
Windows+shift+S , it even allow you to crop part of the screen or the whole thing
Whenever i take a screenshot this way the shot changes the color so that it looks less vivid and lightens the picture. Could that have something to do with my windows nightlight settings?
Big shame ER doesn't make screenshots more accessible. I missed my opportunity to take a screenshot of my knight during a sunset right after i slayed my first dragon - a moment I could have shared to a plethora of potential maidens on social media. LOL
I'm getting nothing with this. What's going on? Steam screenshot key doesn't work neither does printscreen.
It capture the image in clipboard. It's like you do ctrl+c to get the image, you have to do ctrl+v somewhere to past it.
I believe the steam screenshot key doesn't work because the steam overlay doesn't work in-game. This is likely because steam believes the EAC screen is the game and so it doesn't work in the game.
Thanks!
Snipping tool for screenshots, and if you want windows keys you can buy from partner microsoft https://s2keys.com/
you have to hit prt scr while in game, then exit game and paste the screenshot into paint or social media or whatever
that is literally the only way i've found to take a screenshot so far
On recent windows versions (at least 10 & 11) you can HOLD the windows key and then press print screen.. this is a native windows function and will save a screenshot into Pictures -> Screenshots.
Works across platforms, launchers, GPUs, pass it on.
Thanks. I sort of panicked when I hit print screen and it minimized the game.
All my Steam games go into the same place when I press F12:
C > Program Files (x86) > Steam > userdata > 479125014 > 760 > remote > * > screenshots
The *
means a specific number that represents your game. For example, mine for Elden Ring is 1245620
. All my Steam games have their own numbered folder in the remote folder.
If you pin the screenshots
folder to your Quickstart, then it'll always be available when you open file explorer. The other numbers in the filepath might vary for you, but explore your userdata
folder and you'll find it.
They are on your copy paste, then if you click on the windows popup saying you made a screen capture you can choose what to do with it (not sure about windows 11, still using windows 10)
It helps if you yell "stop resisting" a few times first, in case there are witnesses
That's the american way
You need a bigger gun to take the whole screen
No you need motars
Tnt is better imo
No no no! There has to be a bullet in the chamber first...... damn morons.....
A Screenshotgun (shotgun for screenshots) is better it captures everything including the whole phone not just the whole screenshot

how to take a screenshot on Windows 10
Here are several methods to take a screenshot on Windows 10:
Using the Print Screen Key:
PrtScn
. This captures the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard. You can paste it into an image editor (like Paint) using Ctrl + V
.Alt + PrtScn
. This captures only the active window and copies it to the clipboard.Using Snipping Tool:
File > Save As
.Using Snip & Sketch:
Windows + Shift + S
. This will dim the screen and allow you to select the area you want to capture.Using Windows + Print Screen:
Windows + PrtScn
. This captures the entire screen and automatically saves the screenshot in the "Screenshots" folder within your "Pictures" library.Using Game Bar:
Windows + G
to open the Game Bar.Windows + Alt + PrtScn
to take a screenshot of the game.Recommendation: For quick and versatile screenshots, I recommend using Windows + Shift + S
with Snip & Sketch. It allows you to select specific areas and provides easy editing options.
