TL;DR
Use the shortcut Windows + Shift + S
to quickly access the Snipping Tool without needing to open the app first.
Accessing the Snipping Tool
The Snipping Tool can be accessed via the shortcut Windows + Shift + S
, which allows you to take screenshots directly without opening the tool first [3:1]. This method is particularly useful if you want to capture something without deselecting or deactivating it, as pressing the "New" button in the Snipping Tool might do
[3:2].
Alternative Screenshot Methods
If you're facing issues with the Snipping Tool, there are alternative methods and tools available. For example, Greenshot is a free and open-source application that offers extensive screenshot capabilities, including annotation and saving in multiple formats [2:1],
[3:4]. ShareX is another powerful tool that provides advanced features like screen recording and image editing
[1:9],
[3:11].
Using Snipping Tool in Tablet Mode
For devices in tablet mode, pinning the Snipping Tool to the taskbar can provide quick access. You can create a shortcut on your desktop that launches the Snipping Tool using a command (cmd.exe /c "start ms-screenclip:"
) and then pin this shortcut to your taskbar for easy access [5:3].
Troubleshooting Issues
If the Snipping Tool does not open or function correctly, consider resetting or repairing the app through Windows settings [4]. Additionally, checking for updates or reinstalling the app via the Microsoft Store may resolve any underlying issues
[1].
Additional Tips
For high-quality screenshots, ensure your display scaling is set appropriately, as incorrect scaling can lead to blurry images [2:2]. If you have a high-resolution monitor, temporarily switching the scaling to 100% before taking a screenshot can improve clarity.
Does it works the same way as snipping tools?
It is 10 times better because it has soo many tools like region/window detection, image editing, screen recording, colour picker & ocr (just to name a few). The great thing is that it still manages to be lightweight and is open source. It will take some time to get used to, but for me, it's been amazing!
I've had so many errors in Windows 11 where the screenshots/snipping tools just don't work at all. Pretty disappointing given the rushed nature of needing to take a screenshot too.
I use this and its perfect https://app.prntscr.com/en/
I've had this same problem, a window would never pop up after a screenshot. Go to Pictures/Screenshots you should see the captures there.
What shortcut?
Windows+shift+s if you wanna know.
Thanks. That's for Snipping tool right? I knew about win+prt src.
I’ve been using the Snipping Tool on Windows 11, but the screenshots sometimes look a bit blurry or slightly compressed, especially on a high-res monitor. Is there a better way to get sharp, high-quality screenshots on Windows 11 laptop? Maybe some setting I’m missing or a built-in shortcut that preserves better resolution?
Would love to hear how others are doing it. Thanks!
Yeah, I ran into the same thing. I'm on a 4K monitor and noticed that my screenshots looked kinda soft or blurry, especially when using the Snipping Tool. Turns out it was because my display scaling was set to 150%. I tried switching it to 100% temporarily before taking the screenshot, and it made a noticeable difference, and everything came out super sharp. It's a bit of a hassle to switch back and forth, but if you really need a clean, high-res screenshot, it works.
Snagit (by Techsmith)
It's paid
You asked what people are using, not what's free. Snagit is excellent, you get what you pay for
Greenshot is a good free option. Snagit kicks ass and allows recording of video buts it's paid.
Sharex
Greenshot.
It is free and opensource, lets you annotate screenshots easily, and saves in multiple formats. It's lightweight and perfect for quick, high-quality screenshots on Windows 11.
I don't wanna press the "new" button on the snipping tool when trying to snip something since it deselects or deactivates whatever I have clicked on.
The hotkey is Win+Shift+S --- not the most elegant hotkey, but you don't need to pre-open Snipping Tool. The other option is the Print Screen button (sometimes PrntSrn). It still works though it only does the whole screen.
There is a toggle in windows accessibility settings that will allow you to press print screen button to capture screen shots using snip and sketch. It will bypass the new button straight to cropping.
That's great! For anyone else:
Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard > scroll to bottom > Print Screen Shortcut
I use Greenshot. It's activated by the PrtScrn button (but that's configurable) and freezes the screen so you can select what you want to capture. Then you have lots of options for what to do with it: copy to clipboard, save immediately to a file, open in an editor (built in or external), upload to imgur for sharing, attach to an email, etc.
Snipping tool is being replaced by "Snip & Sketch" which has been present in Windows 10 for years now. From anywhere, press: WIN + SHIFT + S
fun fact: "Snit & Sketch" has been replaced by... Snipping tool in Windows 11.
I thought they merge the two or make a better snipping tool ?
and they also remove Paint 3D though you can still have it from MS Store
I just use lighrshot. https://app.prntscr.com/en/index.html
ShareX is even better: https://getsharex.com
I used to use lightshot, but switched to share after seeing its features
Still a great suggestion. Thanks!!
if you need to be hovered over something and wanna screen shot without moving or releasing a mouseclick, you can press printscreen, then open paint and ctrl+v, crop as needed.

The snipping tool in the action center was a very convenient spot for it to be in. Now that it's removed from there, I can't take screenshots when I'm in tablet mode. How do I go around this?
I can't speak for all windows devices, but most Surface devices have a hardware screenshot feature, like your smartphone. Press and hold the Power button. While you hold down the Power button, press and release the Volume Up button on the side of the device.
If you are not using a Surface perhaps your device has something similar.
This is how I solved it:
Make a shortcut on your desktop (right click -> new) and point it to cmd.exe /c "start ms-screenclip:"
. Then open the shortcut's properties and set it to start minimised. You can also give it a nice icon, if you have one. Finally, right click the shortcut and pin it to your taskbar. Now you have a neat screenshot button on your taskbar :P
Launch snipping tool app via Start menu and/or pin it to start or taskbar
This is amazing! Thank you :)

Ig there’s a lenovo certified reseller at shahbad gate .you can check it out there
No mate there aren’t much authorised laptop resellers in rampur .you have to go to moradabad or anywhere else
Here you go:
Go to muradabad Or order online
There's another certified Lenovo seller on Shivi Road, maybe ask them.
got a new laptop with windows 10 and downloaded office but onenote doesnt seems to have like any of the features like it used to...no snip it, for sure....is this the new format or just a bad download?
You can snipping tool to the tool bar in edge now as well.
Are you using one note or the one note for windows app? There is very much so a difference.
oh, thought it was regular one note, looks like im using the one note for windows app....how do i get the regular one note?
Win+Shift+S
Shift -windows-s. This is your friend
Edit: in my flu haze I said ctrl
Screenshot/snipping tool is def in the full desktop client. Its on the "Insert" tab by default but you can add it to any of the ribbon tabs you like.

What else are you missing?
For the love of god please stop posting photos of your screen you’ve taken with your phone.
Most users don't even need the snipping tool: pressing the print screen button and pasting the result directly into an image uploader is often the quickest, most effective way of including a screenshot as it doesn't encourage the user to crop the result; cropping often ends up cutting off vital context from the image.
yeah, but if you have two screens it's not useful
alt+printscreen grabs the active window
Ctrl-alt-print screen will snapshot just the monitor your mouse is on.
In which case sure, snip off the irrelevant screen. Most users have one, though.
I really wish there was a sub rule for that. I love helping people and I love learning with each question that is posted here but if you post a blurry, rotated phone picture that you took from 3m away, I'm not even going to look at your post.
The most common excuse is "I use Reddit on my phone". Maybe I'm too old.reddit.com to understand it but can't you just open a browser and go to reddit.com and log in there?
Posting a proper screenshot just makes the experience less painful for every potential helper.
I mean, if they're too lazy to spend the time to take a Screenshot and upload that, that already tells you a lot about how much research they probably did to fix the issue themselves
I would like to add that while it’s easy and quick to whip out that phone, the problem often is that - especially beginners - often take a picture of “the problem” or what they think is the problem, when the solution can often be derived from the full screenshot but might be cropped out or illegible.
Videos should really only be used when the presentation of the issue demands that. More often, again, two or three screenshots are better than 30 seconds of circling things with your cursor.
I'll add that when you're learning, use Blender in default interface and hotkeys. (I can say that now unconditionally, since they changed the left mouse button to select, as the gods always intended.)
The gods never intended left mouse select... RMB forever
Add to this posts that just say “PLS HELP!!!” And don’t clarify what on earth their problem is and expect you to read their minds from a single image lol.
Second that. Stop those jerky blurry phone video's too
I have the Lenovo legion with ryzen 7, and i absolutely hate it. It's slow, RAM always runs high, battery life is terrible. I recommend steering clear of Lenovo.
Thank you for your honest feedback.
