TL;DR
Apple's Trade-In Program
Apple's trade-in program is convenient but may not offer the best value. Users report that trade-in values are typically around 10-15% of the original purchase price [3:5]. The process involves taking your MacBook to an Apple Store where they inspect it and provide a trade-in value on the spot
[3:3]. However, some users have experienced discrepancies between online estimates and in-store evaluations
[3:4]. Additionally, Apple uses a third-party company for trade-ins, which has received mixed reviews
[3:7].
Best Buy's Trade-In Program
Best Buy also offers a trade-in program, which is noted for its ease and speed. You can trade in your device at any store, and it generally takes less than 15 minutes [2:1]. However, similar to Apple's program, the trade-in values might be lower compared to selling privately.
Selling Privately
Many users recommend selling your MacBook privately through platforms like Craigslist, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or specialized forums such as /r/AppleSwap and /r/HardwareSwap [2:2]
[2:4]. Selling privately can yield significantly higher returns, often up to 60% more than what you would get from a trade-in
[4:1]. However, this method requires dealing with potential buyers, managing inquiries, and possibly facing lowball offers
[4:5].
Third-Party Trade-In Sites
Some users suggest using third-party trade-in sites like ItsWorthMore, which may offer more competitive prices than Apple or Best Buy [4:2]. However, it's important to be cautious and document the condition of your device to avoid disputes over final valuations
[4:3].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When deciding between trading in or selling your MacBook, consider factors such as convenience, time investment, and the potential financial return. If you prioritize convenience and are willing to accept a lower payout, a trade-in might be suitable. However, if maximizing your return is important, selling privately could be the better option.
I bought a MacBook Pro July of 2019. On apples trade in and also Best Buy’s trade in. They don’t have the option to choose from a 2019 model. Not even the specs as well. Do I have to wait for it to just pop up one day?
Sell what you have and buy from somewhere else from my experience they lowball you so bad for the trade in price it hurts
From my experience selling a laptop that cost more than 1-2K no one has ever given me straight up cash for it and the always lowball. I have never had a successful sell higher than $500 tbh lol maybe just my luck?
Maybe you’re selling to the wrong people
your going to get more money third party, so they likey dont even bother with the option
I was going to trade in my old MacBook Pro 15 for a MacBook Pro 16. Apple won’t accept a Mac at their stores, so one can not trade it in at the purchase of another computer. it must be mailed in to a third party. And no matter what the Apple store employees told me about the trade in being applied to my purchase, every email I received from the third party said I would be getting an Apple gift certificate. I’d rather have cash, since I already paid for the computer, and have no need of a $900 gift certificate. I couldn’t find any info stating that the trade in would be applied to my purchase. I’m going with Itsworthmore. They’re giving me $50 more, and they pay in cash,
Hi guys, What’s everyone’s experience with the Apple Trade-Up program? What about the Best Buy Trade-In Program?
I have an Early 2015 13.3” 8GB MacBook Pro and I’d like to get a 2018-new model 13.3” MacBook Air. I don’t mind purchasing a refurbished model but I would prefer something from a certified seller, so even if I sell outright to an individual I will repurchase from a store.
Would it be best for me to trade in with Apple, and then use the credit towards a new device?
Or should I sell with an individual and then buy from a store? Where to sell? And how much is a 2015 pro even worth? It’s in good condition but not excellent.
Thanks for all the help!
I always just sell my used MBPs on Craigslist. I get much more money than Apple would offer as a trade-in. To get an idea of what it's worth, search completed Ebay sales for the same model.
I sold my similar old MacBook on Offer Up and got a fair price from a good buyer. I'd use that, facebook marketplace, or Let Go perhaps.
You would get much more money by selling it than to trade it in.
>And how much is a 2015 pro even worth? It’s in good condition but not excellent.
Look at local price
I’ve tried searching Facebook marketplace for a local estimate but there aren’t any listed. It varies by like $200 on google. What platform do you recommend?
eBay is inundated with bullshit listings so anything you see on Google for a used model is probably derived from those in one way or another. I would say check Mercari, keep checking Facebook, check if there’s any neighbor marketplace groups on Facebook or if you have a college campus nearby, maybe Nextdoor. But generally the Google/eBay/Amazon listings are just made up numbers to see who’ll bite. If you have the time, waiting and selling locally is honestly the best bet honestly. Also- /r/AppleSwap and /r/HardwareSwap

Why don’t you get a 2019 model? It got True Tone, a newer keyboard and cheaper price.
I have no idea why not lol I didn’t know the 2019 was cheaper/worth the price vs the 2018. If it’s upgraded enough to be the worth the cost I have no problem with it.
The new one costs $100 cheaper and got a True Tone display, with a new butterfly mechanism keyboard that is more reliable than the one on the 2018.
Usually, Selling locally>Apple trade in > Best Buy in terms of the amount you get. But Best Buy is the easiest since you can trade in at any store and doesn’t even take 15 mins. Apple needs you to ship it to them and selling is you know. Your MacBook is worth around $200 on Best Buy, Apple was double it.
Hi everyone, I’m planning to trade in my 2020 MacBook pro directly at an Apple Store when buying a new one. Has anyone done this before? Do they inspect the device on the spot, or is there a waiting period? Were there any unexpected issues or delays during the process? Also, was the trade-in value accurate compared to what Apple estimated online? Thank you very much 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Best Buy also offers trade-in on Macs. I wonder how their offers compare.
You can check your device here
https://tradein.bestbuy.com/client/#/catalog/
They didn’t take any of mine why?
It's very easy and would always recommend people do it this way versus doing it online.
Take your Mac into the store and let them know you'd like to trade your current Mac in and use the trade in value to buy a new one. They'll take the serial number, inspect it and then give you a trade in value. If you're happy with it they'll then apply the discount off the cost of your new machine.
All in all, the process is simple and it took less than 10 minutes when I last did it in store.
Hope that helps!
Could you give us more details on what you traded in & how much you got for it, if you don't mind?
I have a Macbook mid-2020 perfect condition, and I did the estimator online and I was getting $355 (Australian). I doesn't sound like a good deal to me.
My other options were to sell to a third party, which may give me $500 for it, or p2p, and maybe I could get $800+.... which of course comes with extra hassle, so just weighing my options.
Sure! I had traded in one of my 16" M1 Max machines for just shy of £900. It was low compared to selling it privately, but I wanted it traded in without the hassle of lowball offers etc. With Apple trade in you're paying for convenience, not the trade in price.
If people use Apple trade in, I always recommend sticking to using the in-store option, as Apple use a 3rd party trade in company who, from reviews, come across as awful. There's been too many horror stories so I didn't want to risk it.
I'd say it ultimately it comes down to how much of a hit you're willing to take on the price: if you want the maximum offer you can get for your old computer, go the private route but be prepared to wait and face lowball offers. If however, you're wanting to change your computer soon and trade in the old one without the hassle but have with that a drop in price, go the route of Apple trade in, in store.
Hope that helps, but if you've any other questions please do ask!
What also works is doing the whole process online and setting to bring the old and take the new device from the apple store. I did this with my iPhone and it worked very well
When you purchase online (there is no option to bring it in the store), can you bring the old device to the store and pick up the new device in store?
I did this last year at a store in AZ. I took the old computer in for a Genius Bar appointment because I was having trouble with the keyboard. Long story short they couldn’t fix it, and so I decided to get a new one. They asked me some questions and ran the serial number. It legit took me longer to pick out a new MBA than it did for them to process the trade in. Super quick and easy process.
IIRC the trade in value was pretty close to what they estimated online. I’m sure they were more generous with the value because I was buying a new computer…but I don’t feel like their estimate was off significantly from what I would have gotten either way.
the trade in value can be calculated (or well, i assume its an estimate) on apples website too.
just type in your serial number
the trade in value is ~10-15% of the price i paid when it was new though (base model M1 air) which i just cannot accept, for a perfectly fine working machine with not even a scratch on it.
https://www.apple.com/shop/trade-in
for me at least, in-store is not an option. There's no apple stores in my country.
I did not know there is an online option, i will check it out. Thank you
They will give u a gift card. However I ended up taking it to a computer shop and sold it to the owner for cash. It was more money than apple offered
Do you need to purchase something immediately or will they also issue you a gift card?
Hello everyone,
I'm planning on buying a new MacBook Pro sometime this month. I'm currently on the fence on whether it's more convenient to trade in or sell my old MacBook. I'm not too familiar and comfortable with the selling experience, so I'm thinking about trading in since it seems like a more simple process (for now), and I wanted to know what your experiences were on selling or trading in.
Thanks a bunch!
Check itsworthmore trade-in site. Typically, their trade-ins have been more competitive than the others and certainly more than what Apple offers based on my experience of using them 2 or 3 times the last several years.
Beware, I sent in my iMac. They gave a "provisional" offer of $350 and after inspecting it, they revised to $135 stating I put in the wrong serial number. I check my screen shot and it was correct along with description. I already had my new machine and don't want to spend the hours to fight it, so I just let it go. I suspect after reading a few different posts that this is not unusual. If it matters to you, take screen shots and pictures so you fight it later if you need to.
convenience: trade in
get the most back: sell it yourself
I got a new Mac Mini M4. I was going to trade in my 2 year old desktop queen (it never left my desk so it was 100% cherry) MacBook Pro M2, but Apple only offered me $550 for it. I ended up selling it for $1100 on Craigslist.
Up to you, but a $500 haircut wasn’t worth the convenience to me.
My experience has been that the price Apple will pay at trade-in, is about 60% of what I could get selling privately. For me, the convenience of dropping the old machine into a box that arrives with good packing inserts, slapping a pre-printed, pre-paid label on, and walking it down to my local ship point, and the money showing up on my VISA about 5 days later, has generally been worth the reduction in sale price. On the other hand, I have VERY little interest in managing inquiries, low-balls, window-shopper, and very little desire to coordinate eBay shipping (invariably to non-Canadian buyers). I'm paying for the convenience, essentially. YMMV.
Think I may end up going via the trade in route in the end after all 😅
Hey all! I'm a big Apple fan, and rely on their products a lot for my work. Sadly, I just had my first less-than-pleasant experience with the company. I'm posting here to vent and maybe for you all to tell me I'm overreacting. Who knows?
A few weeks ago, I bought a new Macbook with the Apple trade-in program. I had a Mid-2015 Macbook Pro that was perfectly fine and functional. The only problem (as I would learn later) is the screen had a very small delaminating issue. I was initially quoted that I was going to get $670 for it, but I just learned this week that my refund was updated to only $240 due to "delaminating or worn display coating."
When I sent it in, I didn't see that problem at all. It's only viewable in glare, and there are only a few speckles on the screen. I thought that was normal just from typical wear and tear. Oh well, it is what it is. Here are the reasons I'm upset that all piled up on each other:
I don't know, maybe I'm overreacting, and I should have paid more attention to my computer beforehand or realized I could have gotten a screen replacement for free. I wish I could have gotten it assessed and inspected at the store, so I would have bought a cheaper Macbook for my trade-in. Thanks for reading this far!
i skimmed through to see what you go offered and its tragic but that's part of the game. moving forward my advice to you is SELL to someone via Craigslist or eBay or whatever. no way in hell you shouldn't have gotta $400 minimum selling to someone local. depending on the specs and hardware in it maybe more. always use trade-ins as a last resort. unless it's last year's model, then a trade-in is fine cause no person would buy a last year model when they can buy a new model for a few bucks more. hope this advice helps.
Sorry. Sell on swappa next time.
Don't used apples trade in program - its a scam - lots of press about it. I learned the hard way too
For my small business I’m looking at trading in my MacBook Pro M1 16” for a MacBook Air M2. Any recommendations on where I can get the most money for it?
i was looking around too and it looks like apple was the most at $1190, best buy was only $800
Honestly, if you wanna get the most money out of it there’s not much else you can do except sell it yourself. You have 1TB of storage in there too, you could definitely get at least $1800-$2000 if you sell it. Trade in sites will always give you a lower amount because they need to make money off your trade-in
There's 2 giant blunders i made. First was buying base M2 Air 13" and 2nd was getting Midnight. Also my unit is defective and Apple won't do anything about it even with warranty.
How is it defective?
Tons of known MBA quality issues. Yellow screen, keyboard, etc. not a pro
The display crashes when you put it to sleep. Also tried different software versions, reinstalled MacOS, and countless other stuff. And the big problem is apple diagnostics says there are no hardware issues. So if it's not software nor hardware, then what is the problem?
16 is sexy - wonder if it will get thinner in new update in early 2024?
I sold a MBP last year to macback.us. Got more than apple was offering and it was a very quick and painless process.
So, I have an old MacBook Pro 2019. Everything seems to be fine but the performance is just not there. Where can I sell/trade in/exchange it for MacBook Air M4 or iPad Pro, since Apple's official store won't accept trade ins.
Thank you.
I can looking for old macbook. Quote the price and specifications if interested.
??
me too, I have a MBP 2018 touch bar version
however, the battery cycle count is 2000+, touch bar has turned green color, the m key is little soft, and rest everything is fine
don't know how much value can I really get it (if gets any xD)
I have that too + with a dead touchbar and battery, lol
I also want to trade in/sell my MBA M2 24/512 AC+ as I need to upgrade to M4 Pro
Location and price?
Just sold mine on olx. 2019 pro for 31k. Bought an Air m4.
location?? i am planning to sell my m2 MBA
How much are you expecting bro?
Check cashify, they are offering very good amount
I have a 2018 MacBook Air intel i5/128gb storage/8gb ram which I want to sell before getting a new one. Any help or suggestions as to where I should sell it? Or should I go to the Apple Store for a trade in?
Same here, let me know if you have any leads!
Update: Try in Croma. They are taking your old laptop based on Cashify but giving additional 10k, depending on estimated value.
None yet sadly! Only thing I’ve found till now is maybe resorting to Cashify. If I don’t end up getting more options it will probably be that
Planning to check local stores too. Cashify is hopeless
If you go to Reliance Digital, they will take it for the Cashify price + Rs.10000
Its your best bet
Cool I’m gonna go check it out and see what student offers I can get out as well
Hey! You've got a few solid options for that 2018 Air. Apple's trade-in is definitely the easiest route - you just bring it in, they evaluate it, and you get credit toward your new purchase. No hassle, no dealing with strangers.
But honestly, you'll probably get more money selling it yourself. I'd check Swappa first - it's specifically for used tech, buyers are usually pretty knowledgeable, and there's some built-in protection for both sides. Facebook Marketplace and eBay are also decent options, though you'll deal with more tire-kickers.
For a 2018 Air with those specs, Apple might offer around $150-200 in trade credit (just a rough estimate), but you could probably get $250-350 selling direct if it's in decent shape.
The trade-off is time and effort. If you want to just walk in and walk out with a new MacBook, Apple's your best bet. If you don't mind taking photos, writing a listing, and handling the sale, you'll pocket more cash.
Either way, make sure to back up everything and sign out of iCloud before handing it over. What MacBook are you thinking of upgrading to?
M4 air 15inch
Check dm
We have now traded in four of our old devices (two iPads, two iMacs). We are careful, serious people. Every time, the on-line quoted price was not adhered to. Not even close. Once they receive the device they make up some excuse for not keeping to the original quote. All four times, the value they arbitrarily decided on was less than 25% of their quoted price! And so the consumer is stuck with the choice of accepting the ridiculous value, or having Apple return the device and starting the whole process again elsewhere. We spend so much money on Apple products, this is no way to treat your loyal customers. A trade-in program should be a service not a gouging.
All trade in programs are rip offs. That's how they make profit
I’ve gotten great prices for my old phones. Do it in person, it’s a lot quicker that way too. Unless you don’t have an Apple store nearby
Lesson learned. Dont trade it i there anymore. Get way more $$ if toubsell then on ebay anyways and it is really not that much more effort.
I’ve only once traded in with Apple (a 2017 MBP) and they gave me the quoted price.
UPDATED: User u/dotmax posted https://roaringapps.com/ - the list is dynamic and it is updated by the hour, but it lists over 8000 Mac apps that either support or not support macOS Ventura. In the past there used to be a few sites that tracked software compatibility and issues when upgrading to the latest macOS. Does anyone have an updated reference for macOS Ventura that is tracking this? Thanks!
The only one I know of: https://roaringapps.com/
Here is a quick tip to check within System Report if some apps are not working within MacOS Ventura. https://macpaw.com/how-to/apps-not-launching-macos-ventura
Chances are if the app works in Big Sur or Monterey and uses standard macOS behavior, it should run. That's not a guarantee as Apple likes to break certain things that worked for 3-4 OS releases out of the blue... As bad as Windows is you can usually run 10 year old apps on it due to amazing backwards compatibility.
Really most apps that break are the ones that interact with the system or when there are major OS deprecations, which Ventura doesnt have.
These types of sites usually arise when major hardware changes warrant it. Like the switch from Intel to Apple Silicon. I’m not aware of any between regular software versions alone.
trade-in programs for MacBooks
Key Considerations for Trade-In Programs for MacBooks:
Eligibility: Check if your MacBook model is eligible for trade-in. Most programs accept recent models, but older ones may not qualify.
Condition Assessment: The trade-in value often depends on the condition of your MacBook. Be honest about any damage, as it can significantly affect the offer.
Value Estimates: Get multiple quotes. Apple offers a trade-in program, but other retailers like Best Buy, Amazon, and Gazelle may provide competitive offers.
Data Backup and Wiping: Before trading in, back up your data and perform a factory reset to wipe your personal information.
Timing: Consider the timing of your trade-in. New models are typically released in the fall, which can affect the value of older models.
Recommendations:
Apple Trade In: If you’re looking for convenience, Apple's trade-in program is straightforward and offers instant credit towards a new purchase. You can get an estimate online and send your device in for free.
Third-Party Options: If you want to maximize your trade-in value, consider third-party services like Gazelle or Decluttr, which may offer better rates for older models.
Local Resale: If you're comfortable, selling your MacBook locally through platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist can yield a higher return than trade-in programs.
By comparing offers and ensuring your device is in good condition, you can make the most out of your trade-in experience.
