What Redditors are Saying

Where to Buy Discounted MacBooks

Apple's Refurbished Store

One of the most reliable places to purchase discounted MacBooks is directly from Apple's refurbished store. This option ensures that you receive a product that has been tested and certified by Apple, comes with a one-year warranty, and often looks and functions like new [1:1][3:1][4:3]. The inventory is updated regularly, so it's worth checking frequently if you're looking for a specific model.

Retailers Offering Discounts

Several retailers offer discounts on MacBooks, especially on open-box or older models. Best Buy is known for offering good deals on open-box items, such as the base M1 MacBook Air [1:2]. Micro Center also offers significant discounts on some models, although availability may vary by location [1:3][3:2]. Costco occasionally lists discounted prices on MacBooks, such as the 13.3" M1 Air [4:1].

Online Marketplaces

For those willing to take a bit more risk for potentially greater savings, online marketplaces like Swappa, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace can be viable options [1:5][3:7]. However, caution is advised due to potential scams, especially concerning Activation Lock issues on newer Macs [5:4]. Always verify the device's status and meet in person when possible.

Specialized Websites

Websites like Back Market specialize in selling refurbished electronics and are recommended for their reliability and competitive pricing [2:3][5:5]. They provide warranties and have a reputation for quality control, making them a safer bet than individual sellers on marketplaces.

Student Discounts

If you're a student, consider purchasing through Apple's Education Store, which offers discounts on new MacBooks [4:5]. While these discounts might not be as deep as those on refurbished models, they do apply to the latest models and come with all the benefits of buying new, including full warranty coverage.

In summary, while Apple's refurbished store provides the safest and most reliable option, other avenues like Best Buy, Micro Center, and specialized refurbishers like Back Market offer excellent alternatives for finding discounted MacBooks. Always exercise caution when dealing with private sellers to avoid scams.

The Best Buy website has the best base M1 Macbook Air deal I have seen, they mark the Open Box Excellent in Silver at $674.99 when they have them.

Magasins ou sites sérieux pour MacBook d’occasion en France ?

Posted by SpinachIndependent44 · in r/AskFrance · 10 days ago

Bonjour,

I would suggest checking the Apple certified refurbished section on their website. All my macs from the past 10 years (including the M1 Max MBP I just got) have been through there and have never had any issues. Some very veeeeery minor cosmetic defects may be visible if you are really looking, but otherwise looks brand new, and the potential for savings is huge.

For example, the 14" MBP I just purchased (with Applecare) is $136 cheaper (taxes included, Canadian) than if I bought it regular price and WITHOUT Applecare (if I didn't get Applecare for my new unit I would have gotten it at $438 cheaper).

A good alternative if you want to get a new one, is to get a little older model, 2020 models are still very good and performing almost as good as the latest models. I got my MacBook Air 2020 from their amazon shop and very satisfied with my purchase :)

I got a 2015 MacBook pro for $250 on ebay and it runs perfectly after an nvme drive upgrade. Total came out to around $360. In many people's opinions that was the peak MacBook generation. I also spent another $400 on an iPad air 4 for note taking. Those combined are right in your budget and will work great depending on what your major is.

If you're looking for new, unfortunately there's not going to be a lot of variation in pricing for Apple products. Everyone will pretty much have the same price. Costco currently has a 13.3" M1 Air on their site for $850, which might work for you.

If you don't mind a slightly older model, check around discount sites for refurbs. The nice thing is that MacBooks last a long time, so older ones usually won't be much of a problem. I have a 2012 MacBook pro sitting next to me right now that is still going strong, even though it is 10 years old. I still use it regularly for web browsing, writing code, watching movies, etc.

Aside from the Apple refurbished store, check out sites like Woot, Overstock, and even Groupon, as I've occasionally seen refurbished MacBooks show up on all of them.

Until you realize just how incredibly powerful Activation Lock is. No seriously, if you get a T2 or Apple silicon Mac that’s Activation Locked, it’s as useful as a brick. You can’t do anything with it until the previous owner’s credentials are entered.

The best way to avoid getting scammed and receiving an Activation Locked Mac, is to stay away from online second-hand markets. The only exception to this is Apple’s Refurbished Store.

Some US states have sales tax holidays in August, so that could possibly add a few percent more in savings. Stores are usually putting on sales during these tax holidays. There might be a limit (something like $2000) on the price that is exempted from sales tax.

Wherever you can get the lowest price. It really doesn’t make a difference. If you have a problem with your Mac you can bring it to an Apple store and they’ll take care of it regardless of where you bought it.

If you’re willing to buy refurbished then buy it from Apple since they’re actually refurbished and identical to new ones. Refurbished Macs from Apple also come with a full warranty.

Yep. As long as the place you're buying your Mac from is Apple itself or an Apple Authorized Reseller (Costco, Best Buy, Staples, etc.), you're golden.

Costco is having a sale on their 14 inch 1tb right now for $150 off (regular price is $50 less than retail, so $200 less). Get 2% back if you are executive member, and then 2% when using citi card.

Best place to find deals for a Mac?

Posted by jgainit · in r/mac · 3 years ago

Any place to look for for deals on a Mac? I’ve decided on m2 13 inch MacBook Pro, or m1 Mac mini. Both 16 Gb ram and 500 Gb ssd. First $1580 and second is $1100

I want to do a 1 year purchase plan but see if I can get $200 off. I can wait a couple months for the deal to come. Where would I find a deal with these specific specs? Online? Or like walking into a Best Buy? Any deal trackers? Also many of the deals I’ve seen so far are for base models. Would my specs even show up in a deal?

Edit: also open to M1 MacBook Pro 13 inch! But I can’t even seem to find one by googling it. Specs are very important. 16 Gb ram and 500 (or more) Gb storage

Thanks

Microcenter always discounts. Barring a sale (e.g., M1 Pro 14 at Best Buy recently), Microcenter always has the lowest prices from the reputable dealers.

Basically, here is the list you should check. Anything outside of these is suspect:

  • Apple (refurb)
  • Microcenter
  • Best Buy
  • B&H Photo
  • Costco (if you have a membership)

Costco and Microcenter always discount no matter how new the Mac is. At least $50 off. But you likely need to be near enough one to pickup in person to make it worth it.

You can check Amazon too but be careful you are buying from a reputable seller.

Avoid any models with a butterfly keyboard and also watch out for the models that are prone to display flex gate. Personally for this money you’d be better buying a new/used M1 MacBook Air. The M1 processor in an Air will outperform any of these old, hot, and slow intel MacBook Pros.

where to buy discounted MacBooks

Key Considerations for Buying Discounted MacBooks:

  1. Authorized Retailers: Check authorized Apple retailers like Best Buy, B&H Photo, and Adorama. They often have sales or open-box discounts.

  2. Apple Refurbished Store: The Apple Certified Refurbished store offers refurbished MacBooks that are tested, certified, and come with a warranty. This can be a great way to save money while still getting a quality product.

  3. Online Marketplaces: Websites like Amazon, eBay, and Newegg can have discounted MacBooks, but ensure you buy from reputable sellers with good ratings to avoid scams.

  4. Student Discounts: If you’re a student or educator, take advantage of Apple’s education pricing, which can provide significant discounts on new MacBooks.

  5. Seasonal Sales: Keep an eye out for major sales events like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and back-to-school sales, where discounts on electronics, including MacBooks, are common.

  6. Local Classifieds: Check local classifieds like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for used MacBooks. Just be cautious and meet in safe locations.

Recommendation: Start with the Apple Refurbished Store for reliable quality and warranty. If you're looking for new models, consider waiting for seasonal sales or checking authorized retailers for promotions. Always compare prices across different platforms to ensure you’re getting the best deal.
