Verizon vs T-Mobile Family Plans

TL;DR

  • T-Mobile offers competitive pricing and features, especially for heavy data users.
  • Verizon may provide better coverage in certain areas but can be more expensive.
  • Consider promotional offers and discounts when choosing.

Pricing and Promotions

T-Mobile is often praised for its competitive pricing and promotional offers. For instance, the Go5G Plus plan offers a third line free with autopay, along with various device promotions [4:2]. T-Mobile also includes perks such as Apple TV and Netflix in some plans [4:3]. In contrast, Verizon tends to be more expensive, although bundling services like Fios and using discounts (e.g., teacher discount) can help reduce costs [5:5].

Coverage and Service Quality

The quality of service between Verizon and T-Mobile varies by location. Some users have reported better coverage and faster speeds with T-Mobile, even in rural areas [2:3], while others have experienced poor service with Verizon [3:4]. However, there are areas where Verizon's coverage is superior [3:1]. It's crucial to test the network in your specific area before making a switch [2:5].

Data Usage and Plan Features

For families with high data usage, T-Mobile offers plans that cater to heavy users, including unlimited data and substantial hotspot allowances [4:3]. Verizon's plans may not offer as much data flexibility, which could be a drawback for families with teenagers who use a lot of data [4]. Additionally, T-Mobile's 55+ discount might be beneficial if you have older family members on your plan [2].

Switching Process and Customer Experience

Switching from one carrier to another can involve trade-in deals, credits, and other incentives. Users who switched from Verizon to T-Mobile reported positive experiences, citing better service and lower prices [2:1][2:2]. Conversely, some users who switched from T-Mobile to Verizon did not find significant improvements in service or pricing [3:2].

Additional Considerations

When considering a switch, ensure all devices are paid off and unlocked to avoid complications with MVNOs [1:4]. Also, evaluate whether additional lines for less tech-savvy family members could benefit from cheaper prepaid options [2:5]. Lastly, consider the long-term value of each provider's customer service and network reliability in your region.

ORIGINAL POST

Hey all… looking for ideas to save money on cell plan for a family of 4.

We are on T Mobile Go5Gplus plan or something. We all have IPhone 15s. Wife and I aren’t data hogs. Two kids are. Go above 65GBs a month. Live in North Nj. Currently paying 237 a month(it’s because I’m still paying off the 15s)

Any good options out there to save?

Maybe Google FI if you like TMobile coverage. But 65 GB is too much for the Unlimited Standard plan (50 GB per line), you would have to go Unlimited Premium unless they can get their data usage down. Unlimited Premium is $160 plus taxes for 4.

Visible Plus plan (the middle one that is currently $30 per line) has unlimited priority data.

Well the kids could learn to modulate their cellular data use…also perhaps the 65 GB is the four lines all together, so maybe 50 GB per line is sufficient for each user

You'll need to pay off the phones if you want to switch.

US Mobile unlimited starter plan is $25/mo, or currently there is a promo for $19/mo if you prepay for a year

This is the important part. The phones must be paid off to be unlocked for use with an mvno.

All the options above, US Mobile, Cricket, Visible, Total, etc are good options, but the first step is to pay off the phones. And if they are getting bill credits for the phone, that may be quite expensive.

You could probably save with Tello. Runs on T mobile. Cheapest plan with 1GB is $6. Most expensive 35GB plan is $25, with promo 3 month package for $15 ($45 total)

Depends on if you want T-Mobile coverage or att or Verizon I know metro and mint and ultra is T-Mobile and att has cricket and then verizon you have visible and TracFone carriers

How much do you pay per month for the plan itself? How much $ do you have left on the balances of all of your phones?

Spectrum and AT&T have had buyout (probably reimbursements) offers where they may pay you a reimbursement for the balance of what you owe on your phones to switch if you meet all of the requirements. But read all the fine print of any offer you might consider. Just in case it has any sort of provision to claw the payment back if you don’t meet a requirement

Spectrum is on the Verizon network. You also have to consider other network coverage if you don’t plan to stay with T-Mobile or switch to a carrier on the T-Mobile network.

Switching: Verizon to T-Mobile

Posted by B_randen · in r/tmobile · 1 month ago

If you’ve switched from Verizon to T-Mobile, was the process easy? And have you been satisfied since switching? Service and price wise for comparable plans.

I’ve been considering switching our family of 4 over from Verizon to T-Mobile. Everyone on my current plan is on Unlimited Welcome and I am on Unlimited Plus.

Plus, my parents are 60+ and I believe I read there’s a discount for 55+ on T-Mobile?

I did the 90 day trial and was impressed with the results. It felt refreshing to get data at my house like I was on WiFi, compared to VZW, where I’m barely able to send an iMessage.

Thanks in advance for any help input/ advice!

I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile in 2017 (although technically first to Sprint, before Sprint was later bought out by T-Mobile in 2020). Have never been happier and would never go back. Pricing and features were always 100% better with T-Mobile. With my Verizon plan in 2017, iirc, I was paying ~$160 for a capped data plan of 2GB and 500 voice minutes/texts allowed per month. Otoh for example, with my current T-Mobile phone plan though, I have 2 paid lines, 1 free line, free Netflix with Ads, free Hulu with Ads, free Apple TV+, heavily-discounted Disney+, 4K streaming benefit, 120GB monthly mobile hotspot allowance per line, received a one-time, fully-free phone from them, have an ongoing/permanent $10 monthly BYOD plan credit, and have fully unthrottled/non-deprioritized data. The plan is not perfect - for example, it's a little higher priced than I'd ideally like, at $211 a month. But with the excellent set of features and benefits that I have, in my humble opinion, it's well worth the monthly phone plan cost 😊

Wife and I switched January of 2023 and haven’t looked back. I have been very satisfied with the switch and haven’t looked back. Obviously it’s location dependent but if it’s better than Verizon service wise, go for it! My wife and I are in the Boise Idaho area and T-Mobile is definitely having an edge on Verizon here, even when we travel to rural or the mountains, T-Mobile gets service in more areas than Verizon does in my experience.

Thanks for the great insight! In my area, it feels more like Verizon has only been going backwards. It’s really frustrating when winter hits and occasionally a tree goes down and knocks out the power. We get 0 reception with Verizon at my house unless I tape my phone to the ceiling and use it as a hotspot. Not even joking!

I switched from T-Mobile to Verizon earlier this year just to come back last week. In the Baltimore/Washington area, yes Verizon may have better coverage but the network speeds are like DSL. So happy to be back with T-Mobile.

You'll be fine since you already tried out the network. One network being better than another is highly dependent on where you use it, and you've already discovered T-Mobile works well for you.

Another thing to consider if you are covering your parents lines and they aren't heavy users, weigh your options there. There are a lot of very cheap prepaid options if all they need and care about is voice and text. Compare that cost to having extra lines on your full account. Might be more cost effective having the extra lines, or might having separate service. I had mine on additional lines for awhile but these days have them on their own Tello plan as it suits their needs fine for much less than additional lines on my account

I switched and did it in person at Costco, 150$ shop card per line + 200$ for swapping internet services + 830$ & 500$ trade in credits on phone upgrades. Monthly plan is still much cheaper with 2 lines & internet. Service is actually better and faster with T-mobile and have had zero issues with service and or downtime.

The real sad part is how ATT isn’t even part of the discussion any more. Basically me and my entire extended family was with them for over a decade. Now I don’t have any friends or family who are customers. An utter failure of corporate leadership, but maybe Wall Street remains happy enough.

That's weird to hear. I love AT&T and my entire family switched to them. Plus, they were just rated top Cell Carrier by Consumer Report for the first time in 15 years. Verizon used to always take that place but dropped to third.

Had Verizon and couldn't get shit north of 635, and absolutely nothing past Loop 12, maybe a bar. I don't understand how so many people have it when I had such bad service, switch over to t-mobile and it's been a dream. Plus the only Verizon corporate store is appointment only, I can go into t-mobile at any time. Full coverage just about anywhere. I got the business wifi hot spot at home, it's pretty reliable, but the pricing isn't the best. I'm sure you could probably find cheaper option, but personally for me it's peace of mind. I know it'll work when I need it, I don't stream that much but when I do it'll fire up and I'll have no problems. I live in Plano off Coit and Bush if that helps anyone.

I had Verizon and it got too expensive. Switched to TMobile and got 2g speeds in my area of Dallas. They had techs take a look and they pretty much said "ya, that area is shit let is help you cancel". Switched to ATT because lines were 25% off with Fiber. Been fine so far.

Also with TMobile middle of nowhere coverage didn't exist.

I had Verizon from about 2019 to 2022. I had to switch as the service tanked over the years. I am assuming it had to do with 5G and however the resources for that worked but I was using it in the Plano/Richardson area; getting about 1-10mbps on speed tests.

Go5G plus would be $185 with the 3rd line free promo and with autopay from a debit card or bank account.

New lines get $800 off any of the S24 series without trade in.

Apple promos are trade in iPhone 11 or above to get $830 credit towards any of the 15 series devices.

Anyone thinking of switching from TMobile to Verizon?

Posted by gmoney1892 · in r/verizon · 2 years ago

So I’m thinking of making the switch over. The cost of TMobile is becoming just as much as the other carriers. And also, if you didn’t switch over to the new plans, you won’t get the full discount for your trade in.

Live in Jersey and I believe having Fios(and a teacher discount) gives me a little advantage. Anyone else thinking of doing the switch?

Gotta pay for the millions of dollars in account credits applied each month to subsidize the promotion people who need a new iPhone or Samsung every 5 minutes. That money has to come from somewhere. It was never free. Pump the service costs up to deflate device costs.

I was paying 96, but now it's 120 for 4 lines on an old Military plan on T-Mobile. But I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to have everyone split and go with some of the cheaper options. USmoblie tello or visible. Or maybe i should just stay. What do you all think?

My sister and I only use around 15 to 18 gigs. My mom only uses 1 gig max, and my dad just passed away. I'm debating; maybe if would be a good idea to go with Tello for my mom and have my sister go with usmoblie or visible and I can get a 1 year free spectrum moblie account then go with one of those options. I just don't know how good they are and if im just losing out on a good deal with t mobile.

It's 100% dependent on where you live in America.

I carry T-Mobile for personal and Verizon for business, where I live and work (Richmond Virginia) T-Mobile absolutely dominates Verizon in speed and coverage, which is ironic since they are less expensive.

That being said I also recently traveled out West to Oregon, and while T-Mobile still reigned supreme in the city, it was a paperweight out in Oregon's countryside, so I had to have my Verizon phone with me.

It also depends on you situation, do you usually buy your phone's outright or buy them used, or do you finance phones through your carrier, because there are a lot less expensive options that still run on one of the big three's networks but they are cheaper because you're not going to finance a $1,500 iPhone through them, you get my drift.

What do you need out of your plan and how many lines are you looking at?

1 upvotes on reddit
Curiouscreator46 · OP · 6 months ago

We’re from SW Virginia, so this is very helpful! However, I do travel so it would be important for me that it works wherever I go (for the most part).

Reliable coverage is primarily what we are looking for but cost effective is also important. We have 5 lines on our account.

2 upvotes on reddit
JusSomeDude22 · 6 months ago

If any of your phones are Sim unlocked, you can give T-Mobile and AT&T a free trial run to see how they work out there. I would also check with your friends and family and see if they have experience in your exact locale with them. I haven't been to SW VA in a while and T-Mobile has drastically expanded their Nationwide coverage so it might be better than it used to be.

Use the other two carriers for a couple weeks each and see what you think about the coverage, from there you can look at the different options on those respective networks once you narrow down your viable options of the 3.

Cricket (AT&T) will give you a free 2 week pass to test their Network. T-Mobile will give you a free 3 month pass directly from their website.

If all three carriers work great out there, then the world is your oyster you got all sorts of options.

If T-Mobile and AT&T suck, even if you're stuck with Verizon there are plenty of options under the Verizon umbrella that are less expensive than Verizon proper.

T-Mobile vs UsMobile

Hey all! Looking for ways to cut down on costs. Currently on T-Mobile. Have 4 lines. All iPhones. Have two teenagers on my plan. Right now we are paying installments for our phones still. I believe with the monthly payments for the phones, bill is around 275 or alittle less. Live in Northern NJ. My kids use the Internet like crazy to via videos , TikTok and YouTube

My questions are:

USMobile is just service but can’t get the phone through them right?

Are there any perks included with the service? (Disney plus subscription or anything )

What will I not get with UsMobile that I do with TMobile?

Most of the advice you are getting here doesn't really matter since you are still paying off your phones. T-Mobile makes money off the plans, not in your installment payments, which will all come due if you decide to leave T-Mobile.

And you will lose any future "bill credits" you are getting if the phones were discounted or "free". Not a reason to necessarily stay with Tmob, but something else to consider.

Light Speed $44 month each 100gb of data each line and 50gb hotspot and if over then 1mbps capped. And I believe with post paid T-Mobile you get unlimited. Your best bet is to maybe try Metropcs 4 lines for $100 truly unlimited and they use the T-Mobile network.

You can buy phones through Apple directly and finance through them if you want.

Looking between Mint, Visible, and US Mobile for 3 iPhones.

Posted by subsonicbassist · in r/NoContract · 5 months ago

Hey all, super new to this MVNO thing but ready to make the change! My company pays for my phone through Verizon proper, but they will also pay a $50 stipend per month if I use my personal line. I’d like to switch to doing this, as we are trying to move people off our corporate phone bill to save money anyway (most users can just use our corporate phone SaaS app as their 2nd line on their personal phone).

My wife has an unlimited plan through Verizon for $95 a month! This does include her payments on an iPhone 15 Pro but I think the plan is like $65 or more per month anyways.

My son is going to be gifted an iPhone 14 because we would like him to be reachable when hanging with friends or when my wife and I step out and leave him with our younger kids.

All in all, we are just north of Seattle so T-Mobile seems to have similar reception overall to Verizon, but better speeds. I’ve been with both and can say that is probably, but I’ve always had some trouble with reception at my house and work on both networks anyway, but Verizon seems to be better in remote areas.

I would like to not have my data unprioritized, but don’t need much data as we are on WiFi 99% of the time. Mint Mobile looks pretty solid for their family plan, as I can give my wife and I the middle plan and my son the basic as he will only be using it for communication with us if not on WiFi.

I also heard that some texting features don’t work on some networks, and I do have a few family members that have Android and I need to be able to communicate with them. Visible seems like they have the least amount of network restrictions in this regard.

US Mobile is a bit confusing overall and I’ve heard pretty bad things about their customer service. I work in IT and am quite busy, and can’t spend the little time I have available playing around with phone plans (which is why I’ve always stayed with the big players).

Which path would you go? Do you do something similar? And what resources might be helpful for me to look at to make the right decision?

Thank you all!

EDIT: After looking through all of these wonderful comments (seriously, on Reddit a lot and most of what I see is super unhelpful!), I am going to give Visible+ a trial tonight and see how it goes! Hoping to set it up via eSIM on my 14 Pro and compare to my Verizon proper connection my company pays for.

Best business line is US Mobile (Customizing) and Visible Pro Plus (Super Simple).  Google Fi, Mint, Total, Tello worth a look too.

US Mobile special power is using all two or three at same time (add $7-15/mo). AT&T Darkstar ($30/mo) + TMo lightspeed ($7) = $37 -45/mo

Visible Pro Plus for individual plans on  Verizon is unbeatable ($35-45/mo)

Yeah ended, up going with V+ and it’s pretty solid so far. Definitely lacking the speed of T-Mobile in the area, but I don’t stream much unless I’m on WiFi and the reception for phone calls is good just about everywhere, even when bars are low. 5G UC is pretty solid in downtown and more populated areas and while I can’t get the 1G+speeds of TMo, a couple hundred Mbps down is more than enough. Google Fi Unlimited Starter is the other option I think would work best for me and 3 lines (I like being the admin on all the lines on my plan), but the customer service horror stories and severe throttling after data cap is a bit scary, even though I am typically less than 15G a month

With Google Fi, you never know when Google is going to pull the plug randomly.  They have a horrible IT rep of abandoning half their projects all of a sudden.

US Mobile, Visible, Mint have healthy revenue, low expenses, and backing.  Very stable, business grade service. Most businesses stick with the Big Three not stability, not price.

The smaller MVNO won't probably be in business in the next 2 years

US Mobile customer service is way better than Mint or Visible, it’s the fact that they change plan terms around all the time that had people complaining. I think for most people that don’t need truly unlimited data US Mobile is probably the best bet, you can pick your network but also switch if one is better. For instance start different people on different networks then swap one if you need to.

Mint and Visible both have truly unlimited unthrottled data if you need that, but it looks like you don’t.

Even the cheap 35GB-70GB US Mobile plan covers 99% of mobile users needs.

Anything pass 100-200GB is a home wifi replacement.  Not unheard for 1TB data on YouTube & Netflix

I’m trying to figure out who needs “unlimited” data, particularly If you have home internet/wifi.

Cell companies normalized fear of running out of data back in the day through extortionate overage fees. They taught us that buying more is always better, ignoring our real world usage pattern.

I’m shopping nvmo now, just like you. I was panicked about needing unlimited data. But, when I looked back through my Verizon Data usage reports, I found our 3 lines have never consumed more than 50 GB a month. Usually around 30GB/month. And we’ve never used/needed hotspot.

That indicates if we get a plan for say 50GB we’ll very unlikely exceed it. If we got a US Mobile plan for say 100 GB (prioritized data ), we’d never come close. (Of course there are worst case scenarios: long home internet outages, long stays away from home without WiFi access, but you get the point.)

Am I missing something?

Correct, definitely don't need unlimited data at all. I could get by off 15GB a month easy and so could the rest of my family. The bigger issue is that I want to make sure that my plan doesn't prioritize my traffic lower than others, as that could be a safety issue for my son.

It looks Visible offers "premium data" on it's bands, but for some of the other carriers, it is harder to find that info. QCI 9 on one plan might be different than that even on another carrier, and it starts to get confusing. Some carriers also only have certain plans that include this priority, often also lumping in unlimited data which is a feature I would rather not pay for if possible.

Same here. Need the prioritized data. Usmobile has unlimited plan with 100 GB of which prioritized on Verizon warp.

Here’s a Reddit post explaining different qci tiers from each carrier. QCI levels by carrier

Would not be a safety issue, text messages send fine are at top priority no matter what even if your plan deprioritized

Google Fi simply unlimited is perfect for all 3 of yall, as its $90 plus taxes, data is prioritized on T Mobile, and RCS works on both iPhones and Androids. If you're interested I have a referral code in my flair

Sounds like overkill. Son is 99% WiFi. Get Tello for under $10 a month.

Summarize

Is T-Mobile worth it switching from Verizon's so best plan.

Posted by Spowerlink · in r/tmobile · 2 years ago

My family is considering switching to T-Mobile due the reduced cost. We live in a urban area so I'm not too worried about service unless I should be. I know because I have the best Verizon plan that I would lose some of the benefits such as Disney Plus and potentially coverage universally across the country. But what are some perks that I could expect from T-Mobile that I would not get from Verizon and is the switch worth it?

I would plan to get the best plan on T-Mobile as a side note so please base any response to this based on that fact

If you have an iPhone 11 or newer the phone you have dual sim capabilities. You can download the sim onto your phone through an app. It’ll run alongside your existing line on a second phone number. The one thing I will say in my area T-Mobile works a lot better if you have a 5g capable I phone 12 or newer. Not familiar with the android side.

It’s a secondary eSIM. You will run dual sim. Set your data to the T-Mobile trial and use it for 3 months then it expires and you just delete the free trial eSIM. IF you have an iPhone this explains dual sim. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209044 If you’re happy then get your Verizon account number and log in to Verizon and generate a port out PIN. Go to a store with that info and sing up. They will move your number to T-Moble.

It will only affect your phone. You can use it, however you want for 3 months. It won't affect any other devices. It will give you a separate number to use on T-mobile. You can use it to send or receive calls or text on this different number. You can also use it strictly for data to evaluate how the data compares to your current carrier. I would ask a local store to assist with settings if you are not tech savvy.

I haven't had any issues where I travel. Now do I drop in areas still yes but they are about the same areas that I would drop with Verizon too.

I switched because it was cheaper and TMobile internet is awesome for me and my family not to mention the weekly benefits that I'd say I use once or twice a month.

I switched from Verizon and love it. Now it does depend on the area. So you might love it or you might say to hell with TMobile I'm going back to Verizon.

I did it and it’s been very good. I would recommend doing the network pass first. https://www.t-mobile.com/offers/free-trial

How does this network pass work if I decide that it's not the right thing for me and since I'm also on a family plan is it going to affect my family members or is it just my specific device

Did you read that link op gave you? It's just an esim for you to test their data. Has nothing to do with your current provider.

T-Mobile is generally just as good along most interstates and towns. It’s the more remote areas that are a crapshoot. But check the coverage map for the path you plan to travel. Also, as long as you’re using an unlocked phone you can get Visible as backup eSIM for $5 with a $20 referral code (first month) and just turn off auto pay so it expires at the end of the month. You may not need it but it’s a little extra security just in case.

I didn't get the mobile service, but got the internet service, one word... AWFUL!!! Their customer service is very attentive, not so good in the information disclosure, but cordial and professional. As far as the internet service goes, I was promised a rebate, you have to go through a whole odyssey just to get your rebate! then your billing cycles are not in sync with your service cycles. Signal was always poor, and my streaming services were always freezing up, and taking forever to load!! Going back to Time Warner Cable!!!!

It’s completely unlimited. If it’s not for you it’ll just cancel at the end of 90 days. It won’t affect your Verizon line at all.

Verizon customer service sucks rotten poop which is like the Ritz Carlton treat compared to AT&T.

If t-mobile stopped, I’d stop using cellular or switch to consumer cellular.

I was with Sprint for years, then T Mobile for years, then Verizon for years then AT&T for years and I just switched back to T Mobile. I told the BBB customer loyalty man at AT&T “fuck Texas” because I hate AT&T so much.

They all rip you off except T Mobile. They have no customer care except t Mobile. I have home internet which is very affordable, and which gets discounted because we have the phone lines. We get military discount, and we have 5 lines on experience more plans. We get Apple TV and Netflix. We get hotspot and roaming and airplane usage. All flat rates and no bs. The T life app makes everything feel connected in one spot, no friction, and very easy to manage.

I fucking hate Verizon and AT&T

Verizon vs T-Mobile family plans

Key Considerations for Verizon vs. T-Mobile Family Plans

  1. Pricing:

    • Verizon: Typically higher prices, but offers a variety of plans with different features. Family plans can provide discounts per line.
    • T-Mobile: Generally more affordable options, often with promotional deals for families. Check for any current offers.
  2. Coverage:

    • Verizon: Known for extensive coverage and reliability, especially in rural areas.
    • T-Mobile: Strong in urban areas but may have less coverage in rural regions. Check coverage maps for your specific location.
  3. Data Options:

    • Verizon: Offers unlimited plans with deprioritization after a certain data threshold. Family plans can include shared data options.
    • T-Mobile: Also provides unlimited plans with no deprioritization during congestion on certain plans. Family plans often come with high data allowances.
  4. Features:

    • Verizon: Includes perks like Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ with some plans. Offers a robust network with 5G access.
    • T-Mobile: Offers Netflix on family plans, international roaming, and no extra fees for data in Mexico and Canada.
  5. Customer Service:

    • Verizon: Generally has a reputation for good customer service but can vary by location.
    • T-Mobile: Known for friendly customer service and a more straightforward approach to billing.

Recommendations:

  • If coverage is your top priority, especially in rural areas, Verizon may be the better choice.
  • If you're looking for affordability and additional perks like Netflix, T-Mobile could be more appealing.
  • Always compare the latest offers and promotions, as both carriers frequently update their plans and pricing. Consider your family's specific needs, such as data usage and coverage areas, before making a decision.
